“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is one of the most incorrect sayings of all time. Idiotic opinions, fallacies, and outright untruths are all, unfortunately, broadcasted over the internet for everyone to see, meaning that all of us have to see, hear, and read the very worst words and ideas humans can put together.

The “Facepalm” internet group gathers all those moments when people really did or said something so unbelievable that it caused a visceral reaction to all onlookers. And through the magic of the internet, it can reach you too. So be sure to upvote your “favorites” and comment your thoughts below.

Aether-0917 Report

The oldest use of the word “facepalm” (but not the actual, physical action) dates back to the early days of the internet. In 1996, where the first netizens mentioned it in a variety of posts about everyday life. This points to the fact that this phrase was in the popular lexicon earlier, as the posters do not clarify what the word means and use it nonchalantly.

However, the actual post, of holding one’s face in your palm, is relatively old, and found in statues and sculptures going back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Normally, it was associated with more serious loss, like Henri Vidal’s Caïn, depicting the biblical figure mourning the death of his own brother, who he killed.

I honestly have no idea why Americans think they are free. Or more free than other countries. Europe isn't perfect either but from what I read here I think there's more freedom here. Free University, free healh care, I owe a house with affordable debt and when my kid goes to school worst thing that may happen to him is to fall and scratch his knee. I have some savings, abroad vacations every year, paid leave and paid 5 month maternity live. I must say I feel free, too. I live happy life. 😊

These are all fairly true with the exception of daycare. That is not a standard thing that happens to the majority of children and it's not something that is exclusive to the US.

Things vary greatly in the US state by state. Like Europe, we are not a monolith. Not denying many of these truths, just that where you live makes a huge difference as to how you live. Massachusetts is in no way like Texas, Florida, etc.

Not really. My parents weren't rich. I wasn't abused in daycare, I've been in two active shooter drills right after Columbine, and I don't have any student debt. Do I make enough money? I probably should make more considering I have a masters but I make enough to live comfortably in a capital city. I don't want a house because I'm lazy as all get out and don't want to have to deal with things when they break.

The UK isn't a lot better there is a housing crisis youngsters can't get on the property ladder. University is astronomical in price and youngsters start off their work like in crippling debut and the NHS is on its knees. The only difference is you won't get shot at school.

First, I can't and won't deny some of these are unfortunately true, but not all. It's rare for children in daycare to be abused. Extremely rare. I've never heard of kids keeping DNA id kits in their lockers. If this information is available, the school would have it, not in lockers anyone can get in. Emergency drills of all kinds have always been done. I graduated in 1983 and I remember fire drills, gas leak drills, intruder alert drills, lockdown drills for emergencies outside the school, bomb drills (still cold war era), and probably more I can't remember. Yes, they suck. Yes, kids get scared, especially if something happened close to them. Yes, I've been in an active intruder alert that wasn't a drill, and a gas leak, lockdown when we had no idea what was going on and they refused to tell us (wrecked prisoner bus with several escapees), which made it worse. Student debt being outrageous is a relatively new thing, last 15-20 years are truly bad. Your salary obviously depends on

What field you're in, who you work for, etc. The housing market only got horrible during covid and they won't think of lowering prices! Llumber prices are still high. But you can build with bricks, cinder blocks (required Florida) and I'm sure there are more . Raising a family has never cheap. if you twant it, you find a way. Women being forced to give birth to children they don't want and/or can't afford? Preaching to the choir. Son and his SO have a son, now 22 months. She unexpectedly became pregnant again when he was just 7 months old. (On birth control)knew they werent financially fready for another kid. Went to Planned Parenthood,, rescheduled for 3 days later.2 days later the law passed . Couldnt afford to send them to Colorado. Now I have a beautiful granddaughter, almost 7 months old. I love her to death, but having her has financially and emotionally ruined them. So, no. I've always believed in Pro-Choice. What happened in Texas, to my kids? Shameful and makes me sick.

Actually, it is possibly to get a fine education without crippling debt. You can begin at a reasonably priced community college and get all the basics completed. It also gives some students time to mature. You can join the military and get tuition assistance after your enlistment is completed. You can go to a state university, you can work and go to school part time...there are many options available if you are creative and flexible. But if you're not 100% sure what exactly you want to do and flounder around for a couple of years you can run up significant debt. I agree Lee, stop whining.

Because many of our universities are highly rated. That doesn’t negate all of our other problems. Many of the ones that stay, do so because they didn’t find better options elsewhere. The majority of people who fight to move here are coming from the countries that are worse off than we are. No one is saying we are the worst at everything. But we’re not where we should be considering our “wealth” (which is actually in the hands of a small percentage of us). Our status as a world leader has more to do with our military and, again, the wealth of corporations. Our entertainment industry is also the best at reaching a global audience, which influences how a lot of non-Americans see us. The main reason so many Central and South Americans chose to come here here is geographical proximity. Yes, we have things to offer, but we aren’t even close to being the best at most things. The only way to change that is to first recognize the problems. Burying your head in the sand won’t help anyone.

There are many states with free college, people just want to go to better ones and feel entitled to it, so they take out hefty loans. My nephew graduated SUNY on a 4 year CS program - for free - and just started working for the state. He's set for life now. I blame governments for allowing the ultra-wealthy to skate on their obligations to society. The US allows corporations, wealthy churches*, and the rich to skirt around paying taxes, and Britain watches the Cayman Islands from across the pond. *US churches don't pay taxes because they "perform charitable works", which are not verified by the government.

I never understood the "American Dream". Came from NZ to germany as a 5yo and in school they tried to teach us about this dream and how great it is. Hell, I can go from a dish washer to a CEO everywhere! No need to go to the USA for that

America used to be great but the libs are destroying our country. Instead of being self sufficient they have us dependent on other countries for about everything.

Firearms are the leading cause of death for 18 and under in USA. Seventeen percent of children in usa live below the poverty rate. Job loss and medical debt ( often hand in hand because medical insurance is tied to work) is the leading cause of bankruptcy. The only thing not having a high chance of occurring is the day care comment. However, given the fact that day care cost is out of reach for most people , i wouks say the OP was spot on.

Due to the internet and the general ubiquity of this emotion, the facepalm remains popular, to such a degree that there is even a facepalm emoji (Unicode U+1F926) and a vast library of stock images depicting this action. While commonly reaction images of humans facepalming were used, one can now even find animals doing the gesture, most likely by accident, but it’s always fun to imagine a cat actually facepalming.

For those that see something not worth a full facepalm, as it is a bit dramatic at times, you can use the good old disappointed head shake, that one’s grandparents will tactically deploy when they see anything that confuses them. Over text, one can quickly and easily communicate their disappointment with the good old acronym smh (shaking my head) which is actually older than good old facepalm.

On the other hand, should one need to deploy stronger language, there is always the trusty face desk aka the head desk. While we do not recommend you actually do this, be sure to upvote the posts that go beyond a facepalm. This is a stronger emotion, one so visceral that the victim wants to physically bash the thing they just read or heard right out of their head.

The reality is that there have always been people who might cause us to facepalm. Bad decisions and horrible opinions are deeply human and probably existed before language. So it’s overall a net positive that we have methods to immediately “get it out of our system” when someone does something so deeply idiotic that it makes us feel bad by proxy. As long as we don’t facepalm too hard.

Similarly, while the internet allows us to see more facepalm-inducing moments, on the flip side, it lets us publicly shame people with ideas this bad and it communicates to others who might have similar ideas that in reality, they are wrong and should keep it to themselves. Someone is not a bad person for being wrong but sticking by an objectively terrible opinion even when presented with contrary evidence is pretty childish. If you want to keep facepalming, Bored Panda has got you covered, check out our other article on this topic here

Perfectly legal under the 13th Amendment. Former slaves were often arrested in the South to be used as (slave) prison labor. 13A is ironically part of the root of today's mass over-incarceration in the US.
