Megalophobia is the fear of large objects. Some common triggers include tall skyscrapers, large statues, vast mountains, big ships, and even animals like elephants or whales. But for a more comprehensive and vivid list, let's visit the subreddit 'Megalophobia.'

Created back in 2014, it now has 764,000 members who are constantly sharing pictures of the things that they find just too massive to be comfortable with.

Even if you never thought you suffer from this condition, the images are something to behold. Plus, don't miss the chat we had with Padraic Gibson, D.Psych. You'll find it spread throughout the entries.

Megalophobia is not an official diagnosis as such, but rather a very rare and particular form of an official psychiatric diagnosis known as 'specific phobia.'

Researchers don’t yet know the exact number of people who have megalophobia, which is likely because many who have specific phobias don’t seek treatment for them.

Specific phobias, in general, are a relatively common mental health condition, and it is estimated that around 7 to 10% of the population has one.

They really are. We have young ones throughout Sacramento. The ones in The Redwood Forest are a sight unlike any other, and smells as beautiful as they look. There is still remnants of Endor of Star Wars E6 in there.

"Megalophobia is a specific phobia characterized by an intense and irrational fear of large objects or structures," Dr. Padraic Gibson, who is a consultant clinical psychotherapist and the clinical director of The OCD Clinic as well as the director of training and organization consultation at The Coaching Clinic, told Bored Panda.

"The psychological basis behind megalophobia is likely to be multifactorial, involving conditioning, learning, and cognitive processes."

"The fear of large objects may be rooted in experiences or observations during childhood or early life, and media exposure can also contribute to its development. The fear is reinforced by avoidance behaviors, making the fear more ingrained," Gibson, who has contributed to the TV and Film industries as a specialist consultant, and writes regularly for Psychology Today, explained.

Moving beyond phobias, Gibson wanted to shine a light on obsessive individuals, or "the perfectionists who feel an incessant need to control every aspect of their lives, including their own physical reactions to fear."

"Ironically, this obsessive control often leads to feelings of being overwhelmed, and persistent thoughts can take over their minds," the psychotherapist highlighted.

I love the movie "Foola Rush In" and couldn't wait to go take a pic on the dam where Selma Hayak's character always tossed a coin (crossing the line from AZ to NV) where it's painted on the road. I cannot tell you how much I was looking forward to getting my pic. Cue the disappointment as the states and state line are NOT written on the road. Like, you don't even know where one state ends and the other begins. This was about 25 years ago and I'm disappointed all over again typing this out. Lol

Comet 67p/C-G Compared To The City Of Los Ángeles

Comet 67p/C-G Compared To The City Of Los Ángeles

NoNoobJustNerD Report

According to Dr. Padraic Gibson, phobias, including megalophobia, can significantly impact a person's quality of life and well-being, so it's essential to seek professional help if your fears are interfering with your daily functioning.

"Mental health professionals can provide appropriate assessments and design personalized treatment plans to help individuals overcome their phobias and lead more fulfilling lives. Early intervention can often lead to better treatment outcomes, so it's crucial not to delay seeking help if a phobia is causing distress," he added. "Embrace the journey of self-discovery, and step into a world of newfound empowerment and personal growth. You can conquer your fears and live life to the fullest."

Meanwhile, if these pictures cause you to feel only small uneasiness, you can harden yourself by firing up our earlier publications on this subreddit here and here.
