A lot of internet fads come and go, but there are a few things that seem to have a constant demand online, and fails definitely belong to this category. Similar to cats, no matter how many you've seen, every single one is still unique in its own way. And nowhere is that better showcased than on the legendary subreddit r/facepalm. It's full of bad luck, questionable decisions, and secondhand embarrassment. After all, nothing brings comfort quite like realizing someone out there manages to mess up even harder than you.

Atheists don't believe in a supernatural being in the sky. Stop. We do believe in ethics and empathy, not because the supernatural being threatened us, but because we know we must help each other. We treat others the way we want to be treated, because it's the right thing to do. No threats, no rewards or punishments in the "afterlife". Just here and now.

Yup. The person who advocated separation of church and state (God and “Caesar”), tolerance towards members of other faiths and cultures (praised the kind Samaritan, the humble Phoenician woman, the faithful Roman soldier, etc.), harsh stance against religious bigotry (refused to stone an adulterous woman, pointed out the hypocrisy or the religious elite), warned against the dangers of getting too rich (“easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye” etc.), had no social prejudices at all (hanged with hookers, despised tax collectors, and so on), literally said that people will be judged according to their hearts and what they did for fellow human beings, not according to their religious affiliation (parable of the sheep and the goats) - that person was, undeniably, what today’s hardcore conservatives would describe as “liberal” or “woke”. Think about that.

I read an interesting idea which said there should be some kind of consensus that the richest person in the world on a certain date each year had to be k****d if they hadn't distributed at least a quarter of their wealth to the poor. They would fall over themselves making sure that would be the case and thereby redistribute a lot of moolah, doing good for people who needed it.

Not just the USA. I was incredibly lucky to be in my late teens when the British government thought it was a good thing for people who could achieve it to have a university education. I didn’t pay any tuition fees for my first degree. Nonetheless, had to work part time jobs to pay for the roof over my head and food to eat. Nowadays your parents have to save for your education or you have to take out loans to cover the cost.

Unions used to have a voice but they have been eroded by the power of those in charge because of the impact on asking for better wages

So what is it about fails that makes them feel so entertaining? Feeling happy at the expense of someone else’s losses is what psychologists refer to as schadenfreude, a German word combining schaden (harm) and freude (joy).

Although this is a common enough emotion, is it inevitable that people take pleasure in the misfortunes of others? Perhaps you see your neighbor hop an electric fence and get shocked by it. Shouldn’t you feel more sympathetic toward them rather than triumphant?

Lotekguy: "what else is new" - erm, not science fiction. Some argue that the Epic of Gilgamesh can be considered SF, making SF as old as literature itself. Frankenstein certainly counts as SF and it's a great achievement, but there was plenty of SF written prior to Mary Shelley's birth - notably Johannes Kepler's Somnium (The Dream, 1634) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_science_fiction#Proto-science_fiction_in_the_Enlightenment_and_Age_of_Reason

To be fair, Lucien of Samosata wrote a story in which his ship was lifted in a storm and landed on the Moon. He and his compatriots found themselves in the middle of a war between the King of the Moon and the King of the Sun. The story is part of a satirical work called A True Story and was written in the 2nd Century Roman Empire.

I agree that Mary Shelley was a genius and that Frankenstein was ahead of its time and hugely influential (rightfully so). However, if we apply the somewhat vague definition “science fiction” to it, then the medieval Jewish tales of the golem of Prague, which certainly inspired “Frankenstein”, must be counted as even earlier sci-fi. So should accounts of the flight to the Moon by the 2nd century Graeco-Roman author Lucian.

According to research by Lea Boecker and her colleagues at the University of Lüneburg (2022), emotions that fall under the category of “fortunes of others” (FOEs) can range from assimilative—meaning empathetic—to contrastive, or unempathetic. In their model of FOEs, the researchers explore what determines whether people respond to others’ fortunes and misfortunes—what they call “(mis)fortunes”—with empathy or detachment.

The four FOEs depend on whether people make upward or downward comparisons in response to good or bad outcomes. If someone you compare yourself to has something good happen, you’ll probably feel envy. Maybe you weren’t invited to a friend’s outdoor party and wish you had been. If the weather is perfect, you’ll envy everyone who went. But if those same people have something go wrong—say, a sudden rainstorm ruins the party—you might feel a bit of schadenfreude, or pleasure at their bad luck.

One of the challenges of B.P. is it's largely an echo chamber of the easily-aggrieved. My team is briefed way ahead of time on the schedules. People are cross-trained, but that still means not all of them can be out at the same time, and schedules (other than sick/bereavement/birth essentially) do have to be planned at least three weeks in advance AND work around those. It's not really a big deal - essentially there is maybe three weeks a year that any given employee can't be approved on. But yeah, if they choose to strand us because of those policies that they and the entire team helped form and agreed to, the whole team will eject them. We need reliable team mates, not primadonnas.

Is it because they think they’re gonna be the next lottery winner/influencer/etc that will hit the jackpot and be rubbing elbows with the millionaires and billionaires?? Is that why they support the tax cuts for the rich while they’re personally getting screwed over? Make this make sense to me

Being respectful of myself and staying OFF my knees

When the two dimensions align, assimilative emotions tend to emerge. Returning to the electric fence example, you'd likely feel sympathy for your neighbor if you could "look down" on their misfortune without feeling inferior.

On the flip side, you might experience what the researchers call happy-for-ness when something good happens to someone you don't see as better off than yourself. Without any trace of envy, you can genuinely share in their good fortune.

Don't even spend $1,000s of dollars on a lab diamond! Get a moissanite! It's almost as hard as diamonds at 9.5 on the mohs scale and it sparkles even better than diamonds costing a fraction of the price! I wear a 4.5 carat oval moissanite engagement ring that I paid less than $50 for and just tonight I was complimented on it. A lot of people can't even tell it's not a real diamond.

Guys get what you can afford and if she complains about it DUMP her a*s and go find a lady that truly loves you. My engagement ring is 1/5th of a carat. I would have liked a 1/4th carat but it's what my husband could afford and I never wanted it changed. I used to work with a lady about 20 years ago that had a $5,000 set and said it would be upgraded in 5 years. To me that says she couldn't care less about her rings, only how much they cost.

There is an interesting place in the New Testament, in Peter’s Epistle, where the author hints that Jesus descended into hell and saved all those people who had perished in the Great Flood. As Boecker and her colleagues highlight, part of what drives the FOE model can be explained by our perception of fairness. This is because, in their words, "A plethora of studies have shown that individuals do not like inequality, also known as inequity aversion."

Because of this belief in fairness, "fortunes and misfortunes that increase inequality elicit unpleasant emotions, whereas those that reduce inequality produce pleasant emotions."

In other words, the further someone moves ahead or behind you in relative standing, the stronger your emotional reaction will be.

In all fairness, we have developed the technology to seed(?) clouds so it rains more or sooner than it would have. But I don’t think anyone in their right mind would describe this as “control”. Even the strongest proponents of the technology describe it as “modification” of existing conditions.

The average middle class person in the US can also afford to provide a once-daily meal to a homeless person in their area. The vast majority don't. It's unbelievable how people with less money expect those with more to do with it what they themselves refuse to do with their own. Hypocrisy at a very fine level.

Not really, just because someone's income is middle class doesn't mean they don't also live check to check. The middle class is very large broken into lower-middle, middle-middle, and upper-middle. The lower and middle middle class has it the worst. They have no social aid because they make too much money but don't have enough for extra luxuries. They are often house poor, paying back high percentages on student loans and mortgages, high medical co-pays, no food assistance, no assistance for child care, etc. They might have some of the nice things bought on credit because they have high credit limits that only consider their income and not their expenses. Their debt is sky high with no way to climb out of the hole and need to live hand to mouth to keep their head above water.

except they dont have that much cash, most of their wealth is in assests, not cash, things like stocks. So to get the cash, they need to find buyers, sell, pay taxes on the sale, and anyone who owns over a certain amount would have o get SEC approval for that volume, which can take 9-20 months, and that assumes the sale doesnt cause a collapse. Stocks and liquid cash are not the same thing. Musk for example, is estimated to have about 1 billion in cash, the rest of his worth is stocks, he borrows money against his stock, and pays them off with dividends. Reich knows this, but he knows those who listen to him, dont understand that.

UGH, earlier this year I woke my son up about 4:30 one morning to take me to the ER for a kidney stone. I also had a really bad infection front the obstructing stone & if I didn't already have a Urologist the ER Dr. was going to admit me. My Urologist was at the hospital that day doing procedures and told the ER Dr. what to give me and he would take care of it as outpatient that week. I was still in the ER when the Urologist nurse called & asked if I could be there at 1:00 for a pre-op appointment, had procedure a couple days later. I have a high pain tolerance so a 10 for me is about 20 for some people. I sent a text to my managers from the ER and told them surgery is Friday.

As a Caribbean person who lives in a developed nation in Asia. The US population needs to stop trying to emulate modern European work ethic unless they want to follow in their steps with the slow and painful decline of European power, living standard, influence, and independence. The whole continent is playing catch-up to Asia and the US itself because of its slackness. It's absurd that the US would want to emulate Europe in that regard.

As you should. Technically working class is a group of ppl who's majority (or all) of income comes from the wage (selling life time for a $$$) rather than capital (investments, interest income, rent). Position of CEO is tricky. Most common arrangement is when they earn lion share of reward through shares rather then fixed salary.

So just out of curiosity, if we can all agree that everyone deserves to be alive (without doing any work i.e. 'earning a living'), then how exactly do you think all of the food you eat, the medical care you need, the clothes' you wear, the materials that were manufactured to put a roof over your head are all going to get created. You gonna wave a magic wand? Or do you believe that you don't need to "Earn a living" but other must work to bring you those things for free

Interestingly, when Universal Basic Income models have been trialled, observations show only a slight decrease in the amount of hours people work. i.e. they choose a better work/life balance. In a world where all your basic needs are met by a UBI, it seems most people will still want (at least some) luxuries! An overarching luxury would be the freedom to find a vocation that you're passionate about & fulfils you.

I have mentioned before on BP that a year or so after I moved to France from the US, I ended up in the ER for pain and vomiting and thought I might have appendicitis. I was hooked up to an IV, given an MRI, had all sorts of blood work done, and was taken care of by a very competent medical team and released with a diagnosis of kidney stone, given pain medication for several days and a referral. THREE MONTHS LATER I received a bill from the hospital for under 350 euros, much of which could be paid for with French medical coverage. We dragged a good friend out of bed to drive us to the ER because in the US that would have cost us tens of thousands of dollars to drive from our house in the country to the ER, 25 minutes away. Our medical visits are 30 euros each every three months to see our GP, also mostly covered by French medical coverage. Our meds are dirt cheap and also mostly covered by French medical coverage. We can never return.

My kidney stone (you have my unlimited sympathy) with scan, blood tests, night in hospital (by the way they had the option of cheese after dinner!) and a goody bag of industrial strength painkillers to go home with, cost £0. It would have cost a couple of quid for the parking when Mr Auntriarch fetched me, but he just lurked in a side street and let me know when he was there.

I understand that anyone who is seeking asylum in the USA is fleeing a horrible situation, but as someone from the US, I also think they’re jumping from the fire right into the frying pan with our current administration. There must be other countries that are better choices. This is not the same America it was 20 or 30 years ago… 😞

Same thing as immigration probation. They think it means the immigrants are out of jail on probation. That is why Trump keeps saying other countires are emptying their jails and insane assyliums into the US.

Why is it so frowned upon in western countries? I lived with my parents till I started working. My siblings lived with my parents till they got married. None of us has any mental trauma from living with them. Yes they have expectations that we live like human beings and don't take things for granted. That did not scar any of us for life.

The system works if you work it. Plenty of young people are making a lot of money from internet/AI/tech positions and tools that didn't exist a decade ago. Today's economy is tough, that's true. But it also favors the bold and audacious.

First house in Los Angeles County, California in 1997, 1188 square feet, $169,500. 1997 Second year teacher salary was $35,000. In 2025, that house is listed at $877,500. The second year teacher salary in my old district is $62,500. House price is 4X and salary is not quite 2X. We're going back to multi-generational housing and this is one of many reasons why.

My daughter's family live in a house that was purchased, during Covid (2020), for $200k, the most recent assessment they have is $300k..5 years later, 50% increase in 'value'. Hang on for the ride folks, this is not sustainable. The bright spot, if there is one, is they understood the lessons from 2008, and realize this 'value' is illusory.

The billionaires and all the decision makers in politics and in business who chose to so greatly lower the standard living are to blame. Not every single "boomer". But the people responsible love that brats blame it on the "boomers". (Any time a young person refers to an older person as a "boomer", I'm going to refer to the younger person as a "brat".)

You can't stop kids from being LGBTQ. They're going to learn about it anyway, whether they learn it from a classmate or the Internet. You should teach them in an accurate and factual way to keep them safe and let them feel less alone. If it really bothers parents, they can always opt their kid out.

They should never be allowed to opt out. I know it's not LGBTQ but when I was in 8th grade, there was a girl who got really pale when the teacher explained periods, and then her parents were allowed to opt her out because it "was uncomfortable" due to their "beliefs". If a proper channel won't teach them, someone else will, and that someone may have an agenda other than just education.

This sort of thing really pis.ses me off. You joined the Army/whatever, nobody FORCED you. You KNEW you would probably be in active service. It's not like back in the day when my father (and many like him) was forced into National Service and sent to Vietnam, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Smeghead Tribble Down Under: yes, but part of the deal is that once you've served in the US armed forces, the US then looks after you properly - the orange rápist has hollowed out the Veterans' Administration so they can't get the health care which they've earned. But: the OP's swallowed lies thinking that undocumented immigrants get treated better than vets. If you're undocumented, you're not eligible for any US state benefits.

A generous (but sadly unlikely) reading of this is that he's angry at his government for treating vets as what he sees as poorly, as opposed to how well (as he sees it) it treats immigrants.

OK, before anyone gets upset, I am NOT anti-immigrant. However, I kind of see his point - if you (for whatever reason) have served your country and helped to make it what it is, then it is not unreasonable to expect the country to look after you. I don't think that's a controversial statement. The controversial (?) bit is - people who have put something in to the country, should reasonably expect to be at the head of the queue when it comes to recieving care, ESPECIALLY if they need that care as a result of helping the country. If someone who has NOT helped (whether they are a legal or illegal immigrant or a citizen), is recieving care first, then this is unfair. This has NOTHING to do with whether immigrants should be here/there, or IF they should recieve help. Yes, they should, because otherwise we are not being good humans.

Majestic Narwhal: the problem is that the orange rápist has cut VA staffing and funding so its services have gone from "Not quite adequate" to "Sorry, we can't do the job at all any more. Write to your congressional representatives". The VA always *try* to do the job, but the current US government's decided that they can no longer have either the money or the staff needed.

Someone, please, have this dōuchebag read the lemon clot story. It takes several months for the typical woman to be physically able to engage in intimacy post partum. When your body is all torn up from giving birth, s*x hurts! Only a sexual sadist would insist on s*x while the mother of his child is healing. Meanwhile she’s often alone in caring for this tiny human because the general upbringing of boys still focuses on being tough, strong and earning money. If she doesn’t put them first, who will?

Woah. Dude. We constantly learn that nowadays men don’t know what it means to be a man. Well here’s a suggestion: when your beloved partner has given birth to the child that is 50% yours and is using her body to nourish it while recovering from the labour, your role as a man is to look after her. Literally. No wonder the poor woman ignored his existence. I wonder how long it’ll be before she ignores it so hard she ends up living somewhere else, married to someone else.

He's being a kind friend to her, we're strangers who don't know them or their dynamic. I hate those kinds of messages that if a boy/man is kind to a girl/woman then he must be attracted to her. Kindness isn't tied to love or attraction, those things can be separate. Friendship is genderless, and sometimes good friends are just good friends.

and another local hospital - Manatee Memorial - is right on the Manatee River about 50 miles south of this hospital. During Hurricane Irina they had to evacuate it cause of all the people on life support. A prisoner wanted for the m****r at a local hotel died cause they had a seizure during the storm and the hospital was shut down.

OK, sea level not really something they can do much about, but one/two bridges (I can't see where they go) supporting that entire hospital? What if there's an accident/issue that closes off a lane or two? That is a level of vulnerability I don't understand being allowed when planning was being done.
