Usually, when we’re dropping a lot of money on something, it’s an exciting purchase. A brand new iPhone, a new car, a PlayStation5, or that top-of-the-line washing machine you’ve been dreaming about for months. You can’t wait to unbox it and christen it, but along with the excitement comes a tinge of anxiety. “What if I crack the screen?” “What if I spill water on it?” “What if someone scratches my door when parking next to me?” Unfortunately, nothing can stay new forever, and once something is out in the world, there are infinite ways to ruin it.

Below, we’ve gathered photos of some of the most tragic ways expensive items have been destroyed, and I’ll warn you right now, they might be painful to look at. But alas, all good things must come to an end, and for some reason, it seems like the purchases we cherish the most are the things that get demolished the fastest…

Be sure to upvote the pics that have convinced you to always purchase the optional insurance, and then if you’re interested in causing yourself even more pain, you can find a couple more Bored Panda articles featuring valuable items that have taken irreparable damage here and here!

It’s an emergency exit. Overwing exits also only have one handle.

The only time a cat purchase worked out as planned for me was a clearance sale at Pier 1. I was shopping and saw some baskets and thought that they would make great cat baskets and (hopefully) divert their attention from the other purchases. It actually worked. Up to that point it was a matter of buy the toys, throw away the toys and give them the bag.

Ha! I bought a cat tree for this kitten I got last year and she didn’t care for it either, which was frustrating because it was annoying to put together. Good thing I didn’t donate it to the shelter as planned because I got two more surprise foundling kittens this past summer who love it.

Have we forgotten the fact that the car is in the water?

    View more comments

I’m not proud to admit it, but I can relate all too well to these photos, pandas. The one time I bought jeans that weren’t from a thrift store and actually cost a decent amount of money, I managed to get 3 stains on them the first time I wore them. I’ve shattered 2 iPhones, one by dropping it onto a tiled bathroom floor and the other by dropping it down an entire flight of tiled stairs. When I was 16, after having my driver’s license for one month, I got into a fender bender with my very first car. I’ve shattered glasses and plates, left my car windows down during a thunderstorm and destroyed the screen of a laptop only one month after a new one was put on (because the old one also stopped working).

Call it bad luck, clumsiness or karma for something I did in a past life, but I could see some of my possessions ending up on a list like this in the future one day. Many of these photos are even more tragic than anything I’ve experienced, though. I feel for these people, but I also can’t help but laugh. We’re all capable of doing stupid things or making mistakes that we immediately wish we could take back. Whether it’s melting your kid’s PlayStation controllers or driving your truck into a lake, everybody has those days. The important thing is that we learn from our lessons, and perhaps ensure those valuables next time around.

You shouldn't really eat at your workplace/laptop ever! In the series "Myth Busters" they check the myth: Is it true that a keyboard has more germs than a toilet seat? This myth was confirmed as true. The wet kitchen sponge is even worse, completely off the scale with germs. It does make sense, because the office toilets are cleaned each day with strong disinfectant cleaning solutions, while the keyboard is never cleaned. The keyboard gets so dirty precisely because people drop food items and touch with greasy fingers. Food for germs.

Airports have very well defined paths that guide the planes. Lines on the ground that the they follow. Any time they get close to a structure, they have a person on the ground guiding them. Did someone take that plane out for a joy ride and take the corner too tight or something?

If you’ve got some photos in your camera roll that would be right at home on this list, don’t feel bad. Many of us do. For example, did you know that every hour, 5,761 phone screens are cracked? That’s over 50 million phone screens a year. These are primarily caused by drops, according to CNBC, and apparently, companies are working hard to solve the issue of creating a great smartphone that won’t shatter when it slips out of your hand.

“Proving that a device is durable is essential to convince people to pay more for a phone,” Francisco Jeronimo, senior research director for European mobile devices at IDC, told CNBC. “Consumers are a lot more concerned about what happens to their phone and it being able to handle certain accidents. When people spend $1,000 on a cellphone, they don’t expect it to crack the first time they drop it on the floor.” But everyone wants a thin, sleek design for their device too, which makes creating a durable phone quite the challenging task.

Even if phones become more durable than they have been in the past, we can’t stop humans from being clumsy. And apparently, Americans in particular seem to have butter fingers when it comes to holding onto their cell phones. Swns Digital reports that 52% of Americans are “always” worried about their phones. And for good reason, because the average American drops their phone at least four times every week, with most breaks happening within 10 weeks of purchasing the phone.

“Gravity seems to be a constant challenge when it comes to our smartphones,” JP Brousseau, CEO of PhoneLoops.com, told Swns Digital. “Getting a protective phone case is the first step, but even that can’t always prevent damage to your phone if you drop it. A strap offers the simplest way to keep your grip, even one-handed – and that’s what Phone Loops provide.”

There seems to be a lack of structure to that structure. It looks like basically two rows of bricks were the entirety of those load-bearing walls.

That was pretty much the standard way to build walls in Britain, from the mid 1700s onwards. There are hundreds of thousand buildings using that kind of construction, still standing and still in use But if you take out the lower part of the structure there's nothing to support the rest, so it collapses.

When it comes to some of the most common places where phones meet their untimely deaths, Swns Digital notes that they’ve been dropped in sewers, on the bathroom floors in bars, in hospital bathrooms, in port-o-potties, in pots of rice, in bowls of soup, in dog’s water bowls, in dumpsters, in beer cups and in trash cans. Personally, my biggest fear is my phone slipping out of my hand and sliding down a drain or through the cracks over a drain, never to be seen again. One in three Americans admitted to even dropping their phone right into the toilet. Beware of that dangerous back pocket! But apparently, nothing can convince us to be more cautious with our phones, because 76% of Americans say they would be completely lost if they were suddenly without a phone. Yet we continue to drop, shatter and destroy them all the time…

Here we put our insulation in the walls and in the roof, not on the floor of your roof where only a slat of drywall has to keep it there. You do it cheap and lazy, you get results like this.

Putting insulation behind the roof sheathing in a cold climate can backfire badly if it isn't properly vented with an air space between the sheathing and the insulation. It gets soggy and the rafters start to rot.

Phones aren’t the only electronic devices that are prone to having their life spans cut short, though. According to Secure Data Recovery, 38% of Americans have had to replace a laptop at some point in their lifetime due to one breaking. The most common laptop mishaps include dropping them, spilling a drink on them, cracking the screen, and needing to replace the battery. And these repairs aren’t cheap. On average, Americans spend about $534 on laptop repairs during their lifetimes. Certain states are also more reckless than others when it comes to their laptops, thought. In Nevada, New Hampshire, Maryland, Alabama and Mississippi, over 50% of laptop users admit to having broken one.

It's unfortunate but I get where UPS was coming from. They didn't want to leave it on the porch to get stolen so a lot of delivery people have taken to hiding them. I expect the person who delivered her package was like, this is soft and light, I can toss it over the fence where it'll be safe for thieves, not even thinking about potential misbehaving pets. If there hadn't been puppies, it would have been perfect.

It had caught her phone in the crack of the lid to the trunk. What are the odds. The phone was completely fine.

If you’re now scared of your laptop meeting an untimely death, it might be useful to be aware of some of the most common mistakes that lead to a broken laptop. According to Make Use Of, laptop users need to be mindful of keeping their devices cool and avoiding situations where they’re exposed to excess heat. Laptops have fans to expel internal heat, but if the fan gets blocked, it can be extremely dangerous. “Some react to this and will shut down automatically. But others will suffer through the heat as they slowly bake to death,” Make Use Of explains. “Furniture, carpets, and blankets are all surfaces that can wreak havoc on a laptop. Wherever you place your laptop, make sure the vent has a clear path to do its job. Even a pile of books that's too close to your laptop can cause problems if the air exhaust is blocked.”

As someone who lives near a golf course - wouldn't matter what side of the house the panels were on, they'd get hit by golf balls. We had one hit over our house then bounce back and hit the opposite side of our house.

Years ago I was renting a house. The neighbor had sold his house. The night they closed a tree from my yard fell onto the house, destroying the central air conditioning unit and ripping a hole in the roof above the master bedroom. The new owners had owned it for less than 12 hours and had a structural insurance claim. Apparently if a tree falls on your house from a neighbors yard, it's not their responsibility.

Not their responsibility unless it can be proven that the tree was diseased or dead. Then it's negligence on the part of the tree owner.

Another potential threat to your laptop is ruining its disk drive. Be careful not to rattle your device too much, or it might take damage and cost you your data. “You can reduce the risk of HDD failure by only adjusting your laptop gently and not moving it when running a program that frequently accesses the hard drive,” Make Use Of writes. “Treat your laptop gently, with no quick movements. When I lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, most of the homes (including mine) had mine subsidence insurance. That city and it’s surroundings was heavily mined and it wasn’t unusual to hear of a big sinkhole in someones yard every so often.

Still trying to figure out how it got past the county, engineers, etc who said it was okay to build a subdivision on top of it. No one told these people. There's a fight to get these people some help. No one is helping them. Some of those people have lost everything as their houses are no longer even safe to go into to retrieve their possessions. 😡

Aside from the actual laptop itself, it’s also important to take care of its cords and charger if you want to avoid purchasing any replacements. The cords are typically thin and easy to move, but they can only withstand so much stretching and contorting. “A common form of this issue occurs when someone wraps the cord over some other object to keep it bundled. Sometimes that object has sharp edges, which cut into the cord,” Make Use Of explains. “And this isn't just for obvious blunders like knives; a hard plastic edge is all it takes. In some cases, power adapters will even damage the cable if you wrap the cord around the brick.”

“Avoid this problem by bundling a cord over itself. Most cords come packaged this way when you receive them, and some include a little piece of Velcro you can use to keep the cord together. If your cable doesn't have Velcro, you can buy some yourself for cheap or use an adjustable zip tie. As a fallback, know how to roll a cable in a way that won't damage it.”

Are you feeling like you need to bubble wrap everything you own right about now? That happened to me once. It was because of equipment failure though. That and management was making me do a two person job by myself. They regularly cut a four person line to two people. That's how things like this happen. Yes, I'm still bitter.

Companies always layoff at the wrong level. Only once: A manager at IBM was told his department needed to save 100k and he needed to layoff people. He talked to all his subordinates, found out that they each performed an essential job. His job was entirely overhead. So, he fired himself.

Yup. On most holidays where I live, fireworks are interspaced with gunfire. One time some random dude drove around my neighborhood shooting into the air, and people found bullets lodged in their roofs the next day. The worst part is that these people aren't even from our neighborhood, they just show up here sometimes.

I like the series "Myth Busters". This is again one of the "myths" they checked: Can a bullet fired up in the air kill a human? It's confirmed as true, yes it can. Confirmed from their test and from real world examples reported from hospitals of people getting killed. So don't fire up in the air ever.

I read a story somewhere about a man who was just talking with his wife outside and suddenly dropped down dead. A stray bullet had dropped from the sky and right into his skull... If you shoot and don't know where the bullet going to land, you ought to be really, *really* ok with killing random people for no reason.

Worked at a big name theme park once, and got to see a practical demonstration on why you shouldn’t ignore the rules to empty your pockets before going on a roller coaster when someone’s lighter came flying off the ride and missed another person by barely an inch, before exploding on the pavement. I thought that was pretty scary. The bullet is way scarier.

My brother and I went to visit a cousin and his wife at their home for the first time. We drove up and down the street looking for number 277, like they'd told us on the phone. Took a couple of passes before we realized that house 211 was indeed 277, but the 7s were rotated such that the bottom stems were vertical, making them look like 1s. We mentioned something about it to our cousin and his wife piped up: "Oh, the house didn't have the number, so we put that up ourselves!" They were so proud.

It can be restored pretty easy. Need to oil it after being hand cleaned and sharpened. Don’t lose its temper but the washing machine does dull them.

There is enough of the bills remaining that a bank will replace it with a whole bill.

And if the banks won't there is a program in the US where you can send it in to the government and they will process it for you and send you back the cash. Even if you shred it, they'll spend the time to piece it back together and then send you the cash.

It didn't have to be left out. The Dachshund of my family in law climbed a chair, scaled a kitchen counter, climbed on top of the coffee machine, opened the door of the cupboard above the refrigerator and stole a cake. No one would have ever thought she could even get there! The whole family accused each other to have eaten the cake without sharing until my MIL caught her doing it again after my MIl made a new cake. Dogs can be quite smart and resourceful and full of mischief. And don't even get me started on cats! My cat stole my signed photo of my favourite celebrity out of the fully closed frame and chewed it. I have no idea what possessed her and drove her to intrude into my vitrine and steal a picture frame.

If you can match up and tape them together, then your bank will replace them. Don't remember what % has to be there, but matching serial numbers are guaranteed. At least you used to be able to do this

I think it's 51%... i.e. enough of one banknote that such that the remaining bit would *not* suffice for getting a replacement (otherwise, you could multiply your banknotes by cutting them up).

Because you don't always know which places your pets can reach. And pets can be really strange and sometimes they get it into their little heads to explore the unknown realms of cupboards and chew whatever they find. I have my period products in a locked box in a drawer with a childproof thingie because my cats believe fresh tampons are the best toy ever and I don't feel like sitting in the living room with guests and they pull out a half shredded tampon from beneath the sofa...

I saw the video and it's pretty upsetting. The poor man was sucked back down into the hole and drowned. I believe another man was trying to grab him but couldn't hold on. The family that owns the house is being investigated (happened last summer) for not having a permit to build this pool.

There's a reason my 21-year old red eared slider turtle has a completely bare tank... I've given up on having a thermometer in there (even with shielding she still manages to break it eventually) and make do with the less precise one on the outside oft he tank. Right now she's spending her time trying to bite the heater. Luckily the glass part is shielded and she can't get a purchase on the plastic bezel, so if it amuses her... And that's just her, by the way - I had two other turtles who were far less aggressive and didn't just try to bite everything they laid their eyes on.

Is this a fish plant (or similar)? I toured a local fish place that among other things makes ice to go in the holding bays of fishing boats. They had two giant ice makers that were each basically their own large rooms. It was pretty impressive.

I tested a discreet corner in the closet before, which did in fact have hardwood beneath. But not the living room.

Tested the corner of our bedroom. Gorgeous jarrah flooring. Pulled up the carpet and discovered that, to address a large dip in the middle, they just filled it with self-levelling cement. Re-carpeted :(

The white one the plywood? Drywall mud probably and maybe some paint. My living room looked the exact same when we tore up the carpet. Unfortunately I didn't have any nice hardwood underneath, just nasty asbestos tiles in every other room. My mom is a star for masking up and chipping it up before we lay new hardwood over top.

Glass is funny thing sometimes. I was surprised how much a drinking glass from IKEA can survive, it even fell on ground (with carpet). Then somebody put one in another and placed them in shelf too hard and the bottom one exploded. I mean, glass went few meters away. Sometimes you just need to hit it from the right angle and glass just... disintegrate.

Reminds me of the broken oven door at a classmate's flat a few years ago. Didn't latch, so they held it shut with the head of a pickaxe. I'm surprised that didn't shatter the door either...and I have no idea why a bunch of uni students just had a spare pickaxe head laying around.

And this is one of the many reasons why truck bed campers like that are a terrible, terrible idea. (Also on the list: way too expensive, fewer amenities than even a basic travel trailer, extremely hard to do insurance claims on, and they're the ugliest of all homes-on-the-go.)

Really? This is naive. The posted photo is a monstrosity; but truck bed campers can be lighter, go into smaller more remote camps, still haul a boat or atv trailer and are better on ice and snow than a trailer... So it just sounds like you have zero experience and prefer glamping.

Mom's Car's Front Lid (Forgot What It's Called Sorry) Popped Open Whilst Driving And Smacked Into The Windshield, Also Broke The Windshield Wipers

We were driving home cause I was too sick to work today when outta nowhere the lid popped open while we were doing 35 Luckily we were next to a Walmart parking lot. Feels like life just keeps kneecapping my family with expenses that we can't afford whenever we feel like we can take a deep breath and relax a little.

I’m guessing they ignore the dog and don’t give it any stimulation or play because they are too busy with those video games. I’d be chewing up their s**t too if I lived with them.

This is something what used to be illegal in some places. For example, in Prague when baker was caught to put too much yeast in dough (to make it raise more, but in fact sell just a crispy bubble), he was strapped to special chair and dropped in river. And then pulled out and dropped again. And out and in and out and it... Pretty popular show for people. And in the end the baker was released, but everybody saw that it was this baker and knw why he was tossed in river.

Dont never ever lend precious things away, people dont understand it (even if you declared it for hours to them), you will get destroyed things back, if any.And if you complain, they call you mean. If some people will get held on some things of you, they instantly call them their own and treat it, like they will - destroyable. I learned it the hard way. Lost precious things and "friends" the same way.

We have a video from my family's outside cameras that shows a delivery driver clearly throwing a package out his window to our driveway to "deliver" it. Inside was supposed to be a glass screen protector. Let's just say the finished result does not do much protecting.

If you walk them at least 4 times a day, and play with them, this behavior doesn't happen as often. Also a lot of dogs are left alone for 8 hours or more and expected to behave. Which is not how it works

Remember, "There's money in the Banana Stand"? My BIL stored $10,000, in cash, in the BBQ. He would always tell his kids, "There's money in the BBQ." They thought he was crazy, "Dad, WTF are you talking about?" So, one day, he showed them. Took them.out to the BBQ, reached to the back, pulled out a coffee can, pulled out a ziplock bag, and showed them $10,000 of slimy mold. The ziplock had been used to hold a sandwich, then the money was stuffed in it, the coffee can had not been cleaned properly, and then it had been stored, outside, in LA weather. They were able to send it into the Treasury, who were able to recover about half the money.

Am literally getting so sick of people blaming their dogs for doing things that dogs naturally do when not trained, properly exercised, or well simulated. Granted, that isn't for all dogs, but fr most of these problems are preventable

My dog is heavily trained and regularly exercised AND goes to work with me (I work in a vineyard, we walk the equivalent of 3-7 miles most days) and every so often she will still pull bonehead moves like this. She's 9 yrs old and 140lbs. But they are like toddlers sometimes and things happen. Not every dog owner that has this happen is a terrible person. Calm down y'all. There are accidents and you usually are aware it'll happen at some point or another when you have a dog. Just like cat owners know their cat will at some point, knock stuff over on purpose... Usually while staring straight at you too! Lol

What's wrong with you? Those boots cost $240. (I expected them to be more, tbh. I have a pair of Red Wings and mine cost $330. Mine are fashion boots, though. His are work boots.) They're also high-quality and SUSTAINABLE. They're made from REAL LEATHER, and they're REPAIRABLE. If the stitching comes undone, that can be fixed. If the eyelets get messed up, they can be replaced. These shoes are made using a technique that allowed the sole to be replaced. They can last YEARS. But ripped leather can't be fixed. Now they have to be replaced. And now he has to deal with breaking in new boots (and real leather boots are harder to break in than other shoes). HOW is destroying these fantastic boots doing someone a favor??? https://www.redwingshoes.com/work/mens/safety-toe/SuperSole-02233.html

My cat's vet says that many cats are very conservative in their food habits, and won't touch any new food if it's simply given to them instead of the one they're used to. The trick is to start adding a little of the new food to the old one, gradually reducing the percentage of the old food. It really works with my kitty.

been told by a pet clinic employee cats often dislike those expensive, "healthy" brands, and my cats are a living proof of that - they sometimes protest very loudly when given some "better" brand than their preferred kitty junk food and would rather drink some water to fill their stomachs and sleep through the hunger in the hope of getting something they like better when they wake up

I’ve got a whole arsenal of cat-approved “condiments” for picky phases, if phasing the new food in by mixing it with the old isn’t an option: Purina’s FortiFlora (best bet, but $$$), nutritional yeast, plain unsweetened yogurt, coconut oil, salmon oil (either the kind for pets, or a fish oil capsule and a pin) …

And i think, the animal food companies put sometimes really s****y stuff into the food and the animals recognize and they refuse it. Then, they put some attractans into, to make them interesting for the customers to buy, and we are perplexed and claim it to picky animals. When i had pets, i bought and cooked food from scratch, and the pets were doing very well.

It's always important to value life over inanimate objects. Your dog will not always be there but you'll always remember him. That wallet will be forgotten about long before the dog is.

I see the owner was able to save a fish, it's in the black bucket (That's just dangling off the bookshelf). I'm guessing (judging by the black bucket...hmm) they had the tank on some small/flimsy stand and knocked into it. I used to keep fish and you need something that can hold 100s of lbs of water/glass/fish and all the gear.

Long story-I keep my pain medication (6 back surgeries here) in my underwear. My ex was helping himself and I have 3 teens at home, so I keep them close. I was at a pool with students and one fell in the the deep end so I just jumped in to save them, clothes on and pills got soaked. I offered to bring it in to let my dr see but she said I was just SOL! I spread out the paste on a baking sheet and let it dry and then broke it into little pieces. I thought about the chlorine, boogers and pee in that pool water every time I needed a pill. BTW thanks to the dishonest addicts out there who are making pain relief hard to come by these days.

home cats peeing where they shouldn't, i.e. outside of litter box, means they want to show the owner something is wrong, either some cat trauma or illness, or reacting to mistreatment by owner, or wanting attention (if a female cat - they tend to pee-mark male owner's stuff when in heat)

Had this years ago. I booked a full travel package. Paid extra for an "essential" (that means, by law, the entire booking being hinged on it), to have window seats both ways on the 9h flight. On the return trip, the airline swapped aircraft, and it was completely booked. No one wanted to change seats. The purser, after being shown the booking, didn't want to do anything. In the end, it cost the airline the entire price of our trip, for both of us, including hotels and car rental.

That's spurious. It should be: people who have dogs should keep their electronics out of reach of their pets. High shelf of a closed closet, in a cupboard in the laundry room, a closed room the pets don't have access to, etc.

    300 bucks for a hat?

    Gavin Johnson
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Hats are either cheaply made and sold at price points upto about $150 depending on the brand that’s attached to them or they are well designed, well cut and constructed. $300 isn’t crazy money for a decent off the peg Stetson. Custom made / bespoke hats that fit properly and feel perfect soon shoot up well beyond that price.

I agree with you completely. Let's change the headline... Being lazy, I left my $100 Amazon gift card where my dog could get it, and being made of thin cardboard, he thought it looked like a tasty treat and he destroyed it, leaving only shreds of it left. Now I feel like such a jerk because I should have put my valuable gift where he couldn't get it. This sounds better to me.

As a social media person, not the best plan. Post it somewhere ONCE and wait 24 hours for a reply. If you post it everywhere, the company can't track if your complaint is being handled or who by, takes longer to get a resolution to the problem. (and social media teams are rarely 24/7, hence the waiting).

I’m guessing that he was at his girlfriend’s family’s house, where the dog lives and he left it within dog reach. Yes, the dog shouldn’t have eaten it (naughty dog) but surely the OP should accept some responsibility too. The brother didn’t invite you over. The brother wasn’t following you around to make sure you don’t put your keys or phone down in his house. If the girlfriend invited you over then she could have mentioned that the dog has a habit of chewing things.

And this is one reason I'm perfectly content with a $20 headset, because accidents can happen. If I paid $185 for a headset, it had better cook my dinner and take me to bed after

Agreed. If I paid that much for a headset I'd hope someone would come along and hit me very hard before telling me to reevaluate my priorities.

Very easy to solder another plug on. No big deal. Everyone knows someone who can solder! (It's not me though, I'm not allowed to solder in the house after the incident with the carpet.)

I'm with you, Spud. I think I would have put the bottle in a roll of tape so maybe this wouldn't happen. Failing that, a sponge may be the better answer than a smart phone.

There was a time Apple was known as the cream of the crop when it comes to graphic design, digital film and digital audio editing. Years upon years before the iPhone. When I started web design with Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Flash, Illustrator, etc., Macs were the only viable option. In a lot of ways they still are. So, look at Apple as two different products sets: high end, top of the line creative hardware and lame phones with no real innovation except for hues. One is a digital creator’s necessity, the other a perfect example of materialism & status. With all that said, the only viable alternative to my $100 Apple Pencil is a $300 Wacom tablet.

You paid over £100 for an electronic pencil with which you can make notes on an expensive electronic pad? I mean, why? I'm pretty sure that Apple are just 'inventing' things like this as a bet. Like, 'let's reinvent the pencil and see if the idiots will buy it'.

It's useful for people who use procreate to do art on the tablet. Art tablets have existed for years but the ones where you draw on the screen have always been expensive.
