Anti-venom costs about $14 in the lab to create. The markup is done by every entity who has a hand in the transportation from the lab to hospital. Leslie Bower, director of VIPER Institute, analyzed the costs. Making anti-venom in the lab accounts for a mere 0.01% of the overall cost. About 2% goes toward clinical trials. Almost 30% goes toward licensing, fees, FDA fees, regulatory and legal costs, wholesaler, hospital profits, etc. The biggest markup in price occurs at the hospital itself: A whopping 70% increase in price, that is later discounted for insurers.

Misleading. when this story broke because of Imgur, the person who posted it came out and said they only paid $500, this is what the insurance paid out and told him, as per legal requirement. This was just them showing him the cost, and yes, antivenom is super expensive.

I have now seen this bill twice (two different BP posts) and I still do not understand it. Something isn't quite making sense here. I mean, yes of course the bill is outrageous, but why is it.... what are we missing? Why are there those specific charges in that order for those specific things... for a snake bite? Basically, a rattlesnake anti-venom is that rare? Because that first charge alone doesn't make any sense.

Scorpion stings are outrageous too. My sister’s bill was around $130k.

Technically we do pay for it, out of your taxes with the Medicare levy. But I feel you, every time I see these in grateful I live in Australia.

I think that this is a backhanded way to convince people not to bother venomous animals.

Not if you have insurance in another country

Because this is all a scam. They have astronomical prices, give insurance companies discount rates so if you have health insurance you pay a small copay (or nothing), and if you have no insurance and no money some tax payer funded program ends up paying the astronomical price to the hospital -- or worst case scenario, they can claim those massive amounts as operating losses so they don't pay taxes. Meanwhile if you have money and no insurance, like happened to a friend of mine who was in between jobs when he had appendicitis, you're on the hook for the whole thing. He was charged over $60k... 25 years ago. I can't imagine how much it would be today. The system is beyond broken, and they're using our own money to pay lobbyists and bribe politicians to maintain the status quo. Of course they've also convinced the idiots who listen to fox news and trump that we have the best healthcare in the word and "socialized medicine" means "death panels". We are stupid.
