Mistakes and accidents are unavoidable. They're part of our lives. But don't worry, this isn't an insurance ad. It's a piece on the subreddit That Looked Expensive.’

It's an online community, where people share photos, gifs, and videos of mistakes, accidents, catastrophes, and disasters that cost a small fortune.

We're talking a supercar storage catching fire, children knocking over a $70K sculpture, and many more hilarious, er, I mean, costly mishaps. Continue scrolling to check them out and take a look at Bored Panda's earlier article on the subreddit after you're done, too!

I wonder what the 'special' services are... maybe a bandaid? F**k I hate American health care and the desperation it breeds. I can't get over the comparison of if 'breaking bad' had been a Canadian show it would have been a 10 minute episode that ended with covered cancer treatment

If you think you're well-off because you work hard and all those homeless people are just jerk-offs, take another look at this. What are you gonna do if you just lose $150,000 one day because you are bit by a snake or because your kidneys decide they don't like that medicine? There is ONE unlucky day between you and bankruptcy and the sooner you absorb that fact, the better we'll all be.

Because this is all a scam. They have astronomical prices, give insurance companies discount rates so if you have health insurance you pay a small copay (or nothing), and if you have no insurance and no money some tax payer funded program ends up paying the astronomical price to the hospital -- or worst case scenario, they can claim those massive amounts as operating losses so they don't pay taxes. Meanwhile if you have money and no insurance, like happened to a friend of mine who was in between jobs when he had appendicitis, you're on the hook for the whole thing. He was charged over $60k... 25 years ago. I can't imagine how much it would be today. The system is beyond broken, and they're using our own money to pay lobbyists and bribe politicians to maintain the status quo. Of course they've also convinced the idiots who listen to fox news and trump that we have the best healthcare in the word and "socialized medicine" means "death panels". We are stupid.

Lab services $22K, yup, looks like a bite to me! Immediate Care Room, waiting several hours to be seen by doctor while waiting for lab results. ICU, finally getting treatment. Pharmacy, special made serum that's made in small quantities; probably cost $50 to actually make each dose. Emergency care service, ambulance charge. Physical Therapy, wear this sling.

This is crazy. In the US, there are different pay structures for self pay, insurance, etc. The price should be the price, but it isn't. You really can't afford NOT to have insurance in the US. And if this snake bite happened on someone else's property or on the job, then there would be a lengthy lawsuit too.

In Spain this would have costed 0$, the healthcare system covers anything necessary as long as it's not a whim (i.e. beauty treatments like liposuction, chest implants...). Since every citizen can use it the waiting list can be very long, there are also private companies if you are willing to pay to be treated sooner, but the quality of the free one is equally good.

You have diabetic people here who can't afford insulin they need to live, because we've allowed a private company to become the sole supplier of this generic drug through mergers and acquisitions, and then use his monopoly situation to inflate the price. So yes the system is literally killing people.

I have seen reported cases where thee patient requested an itemized bill. In those cases, the bill was drastically lowered or eliminated. But I am now a Medicare For All guy. The NPR report was spot-on. We *really* need a serious change in healthcare. One of the *fundamental* issues is most hospitals are for-profit. Roughly half of the money goes to "profit".

If you have no insurance, you can literally send in a small amount a month and they can't send it to collections. Basically, they're going to have to write it off. The ER HAS to treat you, even if you don't have any insurance or money. They just send you rediculous bills afterwards in the hopes you'll pay it.

For one hospital vial, the price is around $2,300. A typical treatment dose? That requires four to six vials. So for a single, smaller rattlesnake bite that would need four vials of antivenom, the cost is $9,200

U.S people, ALWAYS ask for a fully itemised bill. You'll find they are trying to charge you ridiculous amounts for things (ie, $10 per individual glove used) and hiding it in the summery charges. By getting them to itemise everything and justify the charges they often reduce them.

Little tip when getting hospital bills in US, always ask them to provide an itemized bill. Most likely they will reduce the prices plus you might have a possibility to dispute some charges if you can find other places prices cheaper (aka match it). Worked a couple of times for me

Antivenom "only" costs $3K/vial, but it can take dozens of vials depending on the severity of the bite.

We all know the system is f****d, but for god's sake, have insurance. The ACA is there. people would rather pay the fine then buy subsidized insurance. I broke my hip in 3 places, had 4 surgeries, months of rehab and i paid maybe $150.

Here we go again. Someone puts another opportunity up to trash our healthcare system. We KNOW. Here’s what many DON’T know: just tell the hospital you can’t pay it. You’ll be amazed at what they’ll negotiate down to.

Thats a good thing, but how many people are ruined by your system every year still.. Handle the problem at its roots instead of at the flower

THis was debunked years ago, this was altered, the person only paid $500, this is what the insurance paid out and told him, as per legal requirement.

I've always wondered what they do if you don't or can't pay, put the poison back in? I'll die thanks, it won't bankrupt my grandchildren

No they don't put the poison back in. If you're poor at the time of the injury they apply for a government grant to pay it. If you have too much money to qualify as poor (which isn't very much) they sue you and garnish your wages. If you have money, than you have good insurance which pays it. This is one of the main reasons the middle class is disappearing.

They've got a bargain. I've seen US hospital bills for a snakebite to the amount of $250 000.

Thank God for those guys who figured out anti-venom!! I think that’s why the pharmacy part of this bill is so high because they have to buy the venom from the people who milk the snakes for it. Yikes!! *For those of you who don’t know it’s not like milking a cow they actually have to get the snake to stick its fangs in a container to release the venom, they called that milking a snake. I would prefer milking a cow

Looks bad because the front axle has detached, but that will repair, particularly if the car is sufficiently valuable, insurance will pay. Just makes me want to cry though.
