No matter where you live, you probably have an idea of what’s going on in the United States. Even if you don’t follow global politics closely, you have likely absorbed information about the American president through headlines or conversations with colleagues.

But when you live in the US, it’s pretty easy to be in a bubble. There’s so much news coverage circulating about what’s happening at home that people sometimes forget to educate themselves about the rest of the world. And unfortunately, some of these individuals are a bit too confident when making comments online. Below, you'll find some of the funniest posts from the [Stuff] Americans Say subreddit. Now, we understand that these images certainly don’t reflect the views or intelligence level of an entire nation. But we hope that you’ll find them entertaining, even if you are a proud American!

Maybe, though not likely. Columbus would have been aware of the circumference of the Earth. It was known for about 1500 years by that point. The Portuguese were also aware of a landmass to the west of Europe, and Columbus was from Portugal, and closely connected to the Portuguese monarchy. Did he think he was sailing to India? Or was he making a play to ingratiate himself with Spain, by giving then information about a new world?

This is what happens when you don’t read a book, you don’t travel beyond your border, and you’ve drank the kool aid (and you loved it). When I visited the UK, I wasn’t shocked that the stone wall I was looking at was older than the USA. I’ve always loved history and I’ve always been curious about the world. When I was a kid, I loved watching “The Big Blue Marble” on PBS, which showed us American kids how other kids lived around the world.

The [Stuff] Americans Say subreddit has been around since 2013 and has amassed nearly 800K members. The group’s goal is to call out amusing and shockingly ignorant comments that Americans make online, but of course, it’s all done in good fun.

To find out how the community has been since the last time we featured it on Bored Panda, we got in touch with one of the group's moderators. "Not much has changed," the mod says. "Trump and his administration (former and present) were already treated as 'low-hanging fruit' here (and in any case, there are many subs dedicated to stupid things Trump and his entourage say, so we want to avoid duplication)."

"There are more posts about things like ICE and tariffs (though most ICE posts tend not to be very lighthearted, so [many] don't make it past pre-moderation)," the mod added.

Uhm. Tariffs kinda do the opposite? Like if things are created in other countries and you put taxes on them it'll cost more? And if they're made in America then they'll just stay the same. Like....

So now you buy the formerly higher American products, enriching the billionaires who have Trump tax reductions, or pay the tariffs for the imported goods. AND the tariff/tax you are now paying on top of the increases is taxes for the middle classes isn't going to reduce the National debt.

It's the American sickness: they aren't telling us. They are trying to convince themselves. Same way an alcoholic tells themselves they have it under control while finding yet another place to hide the whisky bottle. And just like the alcoholic, the USA will never get better until they finally admit their issues and properly face them.

"In particular, don't say, 'I'm Irish/Italian/German/whatever' unless you're an actual citizen. You should clarify that you mean 'heritage,' otherwise you risk the wrath of your (claimed) countrymen," the mod warns.

Michael Largey: there's no reason the orange rápist couldn't be PM, not in principle. I think he'd have to become a naturalized British citizen, abandon his US citizenship, and somehow 1) get to be leader of a UK political party and 2) lead that party to election victory. All that is all utterly improbable - but not forbidden.

Ironically, the US granted the Philippines its independence from its empire on July 4th 1946 so they'd celebrate it too. They wisely changed it in 1962 to June 12th, the day that Spain gave them independence in 1898 (right before the US seized them for _its_ empire).

Finally, the moderator shared some suggestions for how Americans can educate themselves about the rest of the world. "Look for foreign news sources (e.g. BBC, The Guardian, Deutsche Welle, France 24, Telesur, etc., which have pages in English) to get different points of view about current events and foreign cultures, as well as how US culture and politics are perceived abroad."

Some additional monarchies in Europe are Spain, Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and the Vatican. Their monarchs are Felipe VI, Josep-Lluís Serrano Pentinat and Emmanuel Macron (co-princes), Philippe, Guillaume V (who took the throne just over a month ago), Hans-Adam II and Pope Leo XIV (Robert Prevost) respectively. The monarchs of the countries shown are as follows: Denmark: Frederik X, Norway: Harald V, the Netherlands: Willem-Alexander, Sweden: Carl XVI Gustaf, New Zealand + Canada + the UK: Charles III. My hobby is the monarchs of Europe (I only had to look up Josep-Lluis, because his name is a bit complicated, as well as Hans-Adam II, who I just forgot the name of).

It’s no secret that the United States is a global powerhouse. The nation is home to the largest economy in the world, and culturally, it’s considered one of the most influential countries as well. The US is the planet’s fourth largest producer of film, and the world’s largest producer of music. You can ask plenty of people around the globe what their favorite movie, television show or song is, and there will be a chance that their response came from the United States, regardless of their native country or language.

As a young nation, the United States has done incredible things in less than 250 years. But with great power comes great responsibility. And when you’re the third most populated country on the planet, all eyes are on you. So you better be prepared to be held accountable by your audience.

Everyone deserves to be held accountable for their mistakes, and the internet is a wonderful place to learn and grow! It’s just unfortunate that the most ignorant voices are often the loudest. And in the United States, there are simply more people in general than almost any other country. So with a large population comes a greater amount of people who probably shouldn’t have access to social media.

'Boot' because it was the equivalent of the boot box on the back of horse-drawn carriages. Passengers would change out of their muddy boots and into clean shoes to keep the inside of the carriage clean. The muddy boots were stored in the boot box. 'Bonnet' because the engine cover had a flap on either side secured at the bottom, so it resembled a ladies bonnet that had side pieces covering the ears and which was tied beneath the chin.

'Recency effect' causes us all to imagine that the way we see things now is how they've always been; this is only one of the many ways we kid ourselves that we are wiser than others might think us. Now, let’s break down some of the most common assumptions people around the world make about Americans. One is that we’re absolutely terrible at geography. Now, it’s estimated that only about half of the country’s population can actually label all 50 states on a map. And one survey found that 44% of Americans can’t correctly identify EU nations on a map.

So perhaps it’s true that Americans aren’t the best at geography. But plenty of Europeans probably can’t identify more than a handful of American states either. So it might not be fair to dunk on Americans for their geographical knowledge (or lack thereof).

Fun fact: The "English" spoken in Britain, actually isn't near as old as people believe. Rather the modern British accent was developed by the aristocracy in the 19th century to distinguish themselves from the lower classes. The merchant class and finally lower classes imitated this accent until it became the modern English accent. Prior to that time? British English and American Southern English were the most similar.

This doesn't actually prove that American leftist millennials are any smarter than their right-wing peers - it just proves that neither knows what socialism means and both see anything vaguely progressive as automatically being socialist - positvely for the millennials, negatively for the right-wingers. Also, Charlie Kirk, Ben Shapiro, JD Vance, Tulsi Gabbard & co are (or was in Kirk's case) all millennials, so maybe it's time for the DSA to be more exact in that definition too.

Something else the world loves to criticize Americans for is being monolingual. While it’s true that you can certainly make your way through the American school system without becoming fluent in another language, students are typically required to study a foreign language for at least two years in high school. Meanwhile, data from the US Census Bureau found that 22% of Americans actually don’t speak English at home. So it’s not exactly fair to paint the whole nation as monolingual.

The concept exists in Switzerland, but is only usually applied for very high earners. There have been reports of fines up around the million dollar level, but usually in pre-sentence press reports. The actual highest that I cold find was chf290,000 for someone driving at 137kph through a village 50kph zone.

This is the way all fines should work. Set a minimum that even poor people could pay, then add to the fine based on your gross income. Rich people view fines as "do what I want pricing" and we have to end that.

I wish fines were proportionate in this country. And it has to hurt. For some people even £5 wrecks their chance of eating the next week. How much would you have to take from a millionaire to have the same effect?

IDK that I agree that icons are always better. My car is a Honda. I typically have to look in the manual to figure out what the icon means. Also, I feel that tourists have a responsibility to know enough about the language of the country they're visiting to manage everyday tasks. And I'm American. However, I'm likely not representative as my father was a linguist and my mother was a historian.

Problem is that icons don't always make sense. We have a telephone receiver on our cell phones as an icon for calling. We use an icon of a floppy disk to mean save a file. Seriously? These make sense in this year of our lard 2025? And then there's the share icon and the USB icon-they're certainly not intuitive.

This next assumption about the United States doesn’t have to do with intelligence, but it’s certainly something that the rest of the world likes to clown on us for: being unhealthy and/or overweight. It’s true that 40% of the nation is considered obese, according to the CDC. However, when it comes to the most obese countries in the world, the United States ranks 19th. And in the United Kingdom, 28% of adults are considered obese. So while this is certainly an issue in the US, it’s not the only nation that is struggling with an obesity epidemic.

I know! But at the same time, I was in Frankfort airport a few years back getting a connecting flight from Mumbai I think back to the US (I am an American) and I was astounded that two US "officials" of some sort--i don't know if they were Border Patrol, ICE, TSA or what--were questioning two young men in the waiting area, who were sitting right next to me. They were not in any kind of uniform. They were grilling these two young guys about what they were doing, why were they traveling to the US, etc. I was angry thinking, "we're in Germany! What right do you have to question these guys?!!"

But the common language of air traffic control is English, sometimes (but not in all) for domestic flights within other nations. For better or worse, English has become the lingua franca of transportation and commerce across the world. But don't worry, the present administration is working hard to replace it with Newspeak.

If the plane is an American aircraft, in that it is from an American based operator such as Delta, Southwest, American Airlines, UPS, FedEx, and so on... Then the plane is governed by the FAA, and must obey those rules, regardless of what nation's airspace it is in. Making the question a valid one, if the airplane in question is an International flight or one of the above mentioned airlines.

    Chris Jones

Not according to what Ive read... American aircraft does not have to follow FAA rules in Europe , but it must follow the rules of the European authority, the EASA, and must meet local regulations. This is because the FAA has authority over US airspace and American-registered aircraft in international airspace, but when a US aircraft is in European airspace, the local authority, EASA, has jurisdiction.

Fun fact: This kind of misunderstanding has been happening for centuries. The best example of this is the Pennsylvania Dutch community in new England. Those communities trace their lineage back to German settlers. The reason they were called "Dutch" is because the British settlers (the Pennsylvania Dutch were settling when that area was still a British colony) couldn't understand the difference between Deutsch, and Dutch.

Both “Dutch” and “Deutsch” evolved from the Old High German word “diutisc” (or “theodisk”), which meant “of the people”. English speakers adapted it as “Diets” before it split into the modern English “Dutch” and German “Deutsch”. So actually it once was the same.

It was different in many states: 18 in NY but 21 in all the states adjacent to it. (so very lucrative for liquor stores near the border) It was changed nationally because you could vote or be drafted to die for the country at 18. (I turned 21 the year it happened, and been drafted & served at 19) It ruined a lot of nice bars and clubs. When it was 21 you could get away with drinking at 19 or 20 if you behaved yourself. When it went to 18 that became 16 or 17 y.o.'s and that just didn't happen.

If the decision of a CEO to keep prices high and deny health care is not morally reprehensible and is the cause of many deaths, then why is shooting just one CEO a problem? Did you here that the people involved with the Luigi case have fücked it up so badly he probably won't get convicted? First, the woman who ratted him out isn't getting the reward because she called the local PD instead of the FBI. And she lost her job because the owner of the place she worked didn't like the negative attention. Second, the police interrogated Luigi for over 30 minutes before reading him his rights. And, they searched his backpack and found the weapon without probable cause or a warrant. All of which makes it "fruit of the poisonous tree" and inadmissible. Anything he said and anything associated with the weapon (prints, bullet striations, possession) cannot be used in court.

Why then in America do I pay monthly premiums, and pay extra out of pocket to receive that care? I'm now broke because of two surgeries that were unexpected. Your view is so delusional, I don't know what else to say.

The history of coffee and coffee houses in London is particularly revealing of how coffee shaped the emergence of modern society. The first coffee house opened in London in 1652. A man named Bowman, servant to a merchant in the Turkey trade, opened it in partnership with Pasqua Rosee in St. Michael's Alley, Cornhill.

I blame the educational system. I suspect there is not much about world history, geography, etc. They learn so much about the various states, and American history (even though there is comparatively little of it, being such a new nation), and wonder why everyone else is not as well informed about it. While knowing nothing about anywhere else.

False. Quite the opposite, Euros are higher than the dollar. In fact, the US dollar is the TENTH best currency, with the Kuwaiti dinar being first (1 KWD = $3.25 - $3.28 USD) and the Bahraini dinar being second, with one BHD = $2.65 USD. The Euro is 9th. I mean, if you're talking about TRADE VALUE, you'd be correct, OP. However it is absolutely not the "strongest" currency.

The prevalence of the dollar as a trade currency has a lot to do with the CIA. They have warehouses full of currency that they regularly use to corrupt other countries. It's counted by weighing it. (illustration is movie prop currency) DSC03098-3...b7d57f.jpg DSC03098-300x224-691b75cb7d57f.jpg

But... If tips combined with the $2.13 hourly wage do not equal $7.25 per hour, the employer must make up the difference.

Tipping culture just allows business owners to make more profit, due to customers " making up " employees wages. Don't Americans " get it " ?

Europeans believe in paying their staff a wage, so they don’t need to beg for tips. The price of staff wages is included in the meal, much like the cleaning staff, food costs, rent of the building etc. Why is this so difficult for you to understand? One can hardly go into the kitchen and serve themselves, so it is part of the meal price.

There's a very r@cist history behind tipping that started with George Pullman and his trains who only hired former sl@ves as porters and paid them nothing so they'd require tips to survive. Other industries saw that they could cheat their employees the same way and followed suit. The American Restaurant Association, a very powerful lobbying group, got Congress to excuse them from normal minimum wage laws, claiming that thousands of them would go out of business if they had to pay their workers enough to live off of.

Most USA companies consider PTO (paid time off) hours to be used for sick time and bereavement. Workers can take federally protected family leave (FMLA), but it's unpaid and must go through an approval process. If you're sick or injured it's a double hit of medical bills and unpaid wages.

Yes, we Scots love when some hillbilly tells us how to define "being Scottish". Small hint: we're not much into "blood and soil" cults, so DNA isn't everything. Though it's very likely that the gentleman in the photo is Scottish from his parents' side, unlike me.

There are Americans who claim that the Europeans who came to America weren't "immigrants" - they were "settlers". A guess a settler is an immigrant who kills off the locals to take their land.

ThisIsMyDisplayName: er, our species (probably) evolved in Africa, so all Americans are immigrants, along with everyone else whose ancestors haven't all stayed in Africa for the last however many hundreds of thousands of years. (Probably? It's complicated. What about those of us who are human with genetic contributions from Neanderthals and Denisovans, who seem to have evolved out of Africa? But from ancestral species which did evolve in Africa, so, erm, I dunno...)

I think you’ll find that most of the world (with the exceptions of the Americans) would rather eat Italian food than American food. Italy is famed for it’s excellent food - American is famed for oversized portions of cheap flavourless food.

Obviously the "real breakfast" comment is stupid, but I can relate to the desire to have the food you grew up with. I've not had the opportunity to leave the US, but I've traveled and either visited or lived in almost all of the lower 48. There's definitely something comforting about coming back to my home state (AZ) and getting to have a Navajo taco or something.

Due to certain Italian citizenship laws, I could get my Italian citizenship (my cousin did and lives in Italy now). However, I would not consider myself Italian as I don't speak Italian and, aside from my cousin, my relatives their are pretty far out on the family tree branches.

If Americans could do math they would realize that when they add their insurance premiums to their tax bill they would actually be paying more in taxes than countries with socialized health care. And this doesn't even take into account their co-pay if they actually have to use their insurance.

This comment is very true. In the UK, taxes pay for the NHS so care is free at point of need. However, in the USA, people also pay taxes, and those that can afford it also pay for health insurance, and this STILL doesn't mean that the care is free at point of need.

In the USA we're taught that it's wrong to expect any return on investment of your tax dollars other than a standing military and a tax-paying structure. If you want anything else for your hard earned tax dollars, you are asking for a handout.

You pay for an ambulance in the UK if you are in a car accident (I speak from experience). However, that will then be repaid to you by your car insurance, or (as in my case) the insurance of the person that crashed in to you.

Probably they did not signal the waiters that they wanted something. At least in Austria it is common that waiters won't bother you until you signal them that you want something. In contrary, it is seen as rude if they b**t in too often and ask if you need something. However it is gradually changing since the huge amount of tourism and their view how things should be handled.

Air conditioning is super bad for the environment, and will help heat up the earth even more. If you don't need them, you really shouldn't be using them. And dryers should be considered a luxury, unless you live in a very small house and have no garden, there's no need to spend a lot of electricity on something that the sun or air can do too.

    Forrest Hobbs
    Community Member
3 weeks ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Jaya: if you live in Northern Europe, drying clothes in the winter can be a problem. If you just hang them up indoors - if you have the space - you can cause problems with damp. Yes you can open windows to help with that, but that increases the heating bill. A modern efficient condensing tumble dryer is often a good idea. Good insulation and forced home ventilation with heat exchangers is perhaps an even better idea, but expensive to retro-fit. Me? I live in Northern England and dry my clothes on the washing line well over 90% of the time, although this time of year, they do need finishing off indoors.

    Forrest Hobbs

3 weeks ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Andrei Iepure: to be fair, the advice for passengers prior to 9/11 for air hijackings was to keep calm, keep quiet, and let the hijackers get on with it. Hijackers mostly wanted an aircraft full of hostages so your best chance of survival was to keep quiet so they didn't pick you out to make an example of. The events of 9/11 changed all that - but how were any of the passengers on the day to guess that their hijackers were intent on using the aircraft as súicide weapons? And even if someone had guessed, what could you do about it? 🤷 Without training, it's very hard to act effectively.

Idiots. I'm guessing it's gonna be more common for our age group for being kids during the worst ozone hole and the sunglasses in the 80's did nothing to protect against uv. I got first symptoms before 40. Still waiting for the cataracts to mature so they can get it out nicely.

My 3 yo grandson was hospitalized from Feb to March. PICU and the whole shot. My daughter is a teacher, who covers her family with her insurance. Bill was over $500k. BC/BS took care of most of it.

Your daughter probably pays quite a premium for that insurance. And on a teachers salary no less. Also, it is nice that your daughter has that option. A lot of people don’t. The point is, we could have universal healthcare and not have to worry about the bs at all! This is the part where Americans start spewing the propaganda they’ve been sold about how horrible countries with socialized medicine have it and why our ridiculously messed up system is actually the best.

I had my baby at home, with an NHS midwife (and a second came when the time was nearly there, so there’s one trained professional for the mother and one for the baby). When I need more gas and air it came over in a taxi from the hospital. I was in control of everything from start to finish, with the security of knowing if things didn’t go as planned I had people with me that could keep me and baby safe until we got to a hospital. This was all free. All of it. We obviously paid for heating, lighting, snacks (I could eat and drink anything I wanted whenever I wanted), bedding, laundry, etc. But the care was kind, impeccable, and free.

I'll say it again: a friend's sister had a baby that was born with underdeveloped lungs. First months in NICU, then in and out of hospital for 2 years. At the beginning they had a flat near the hospital, so they could be near the baby. It was given a 10% chance to survive. Today, the wee one is strong and healthy, and they paid...nothing. That is: we all paid for it, and unlike certain countries with a "me-me-me" mindset, we do it gladly. :)

My ex-husband (whose great-grandparents immigrated from Ireland and Germany) used to use that sort of nonsense to justify his drinking. Until we had a screaming match while he was blacked out that ended when he pointed his g.un at my head. That was the moment both of us had an epiphany: I realized our marriage was over and he realized his drinking had nothing to do with his biological ancestry and everything to do with the fact that he's an alcoholic.

Honest question for the American pandas. I know those who are here probably don't have anything in common with that stereotypical dumb American, but I often wondered how those Americans would react if I said I am American because my great grandparents moved to Europe frim the US. I'm wading in here, but my understanding is that it isn't so much to do with their ancestry, but more to do with the history of immigration in the USA. I think there were strong communities of Irish, German, Polish, etc. who tired to keep their cultures alive and people continue to identify with it, even though they are far from what the country their ancestors were from is currently like. The key to my understanding was why no one says they are English American: it's because there wasn't that sub culture. So you saying you were American would probably sound odd because it doesn't have the same historical context.

I live next door to Irish like this. They visited Ireland once, but none of them were born there. It's a weird kind of delusion. Most of North Americans have European ancestry, but for some reason Italians and Irish are obsessive about it. Even though they know virtually nothing about these countries or cultures.

"Banana ketchup, also known as banana sauce (in export markets), is a Philippine fruit ketchup condiment made from banana, sugar, vinegar, and spices. Its natural color is brownish-yellow but it is often dyed red to resemble tomato ketchup. Banana ketchup was first produced in the Philippines during World War II due to a wartime shortage of tomatoes but a comparatively high production of bananas.[1][2]"

Again: massive, massive inferiority complex in the USA. No idea why. Because they have no long history like European countries? But New Zealand goes back to (correct me if I'm wrong, dear Kiwi Pandas) around 1200 AD when the Maoris arrived, right? And they don't have an issue with that.

European "right" parties are either deranged (UK Tories) or fáscist (Italy, I do mean you), or both (UK Reform). The nearest thing we've got to left wing here in the UK are the Greens.

I'm frequently being called far left (along with a nice dose of insults while they state that 'only the leftists resort to insults') by people who are clearly far right... they just simply cannot see how far right their views are because they've been so horribly normalised. They tell me that Farage and co are 'centre right'. Centre... pffft.

Even within the one small country I live in there are four different national languages, and the majority (~70%) one has more and varied dialects than the whole of the US. Been playing with chatgpt a little bit recently, which tells me. . . : " depending on how you define “distinct dialect,” you can say: 👉 4–6 main Swiss German dialect groups, or 20–50+ local varieties.

I have a friend who was born in the US, (his parents lived there for a few years for work) his parents then moved back to Scotland, he has both British and American passports. He travels a lot and always uses his British passport unless he's going to the US, he learnt very young that a lot of countries don't like Americans.

Most of the Americans I met whilst I was backpacking would tell people they are from Canada so that they didn't get stick about it. One went so far as sewing a big ol' maple leaf on his pack because (he claimed) it made them less likely to search him.

Denmark has a national park, Rebild, where they celebrate the Fourth every year. The land was purchased by Danish-Americans for a park in 1912 with the stipulation that they celebrate it. I was there for it in 1966 and found the Danes very light-hearted about. The park also has a small museum, the Lincoln Log Cabin Blokhusmuseet. The log cabin (a Swedish introduction to the US) is larger than any home Mr Lincoln lived in before the White House.

Lady Chelsea (LadyChelseaoftheVoid): salt only works well when it's repeatedly ground in - with passing wheels on a road, for example. Driveways are best dealt with by shovels - and /then/ put some road salt down. I live in England and even I have a snow shovel in the garage - it does get used every few years.
