We got in touch with dating expert Dan Bacon, the founder of The Modern Man, to get to grips with the role that gifts play in relationships. He also revealed to us how men can still surprise their loved ones if they feel like they've run out of original ideas. "Gifts are definitely not essential for a happy, healthy relationship unless you're with someone who places a lot of importance on gifts. My Dad refused to accept my mom's dementia and just kept scolding her for not 'writing things down'. We children had to be pretty drastic to at least TRY to make him bei reasonable. He's way too invovled with himself and his own problems (Parkinson). They are both in a home, now, and unhappy but there is no other way. Both refused all regular help until things came to a crashing halt. I admire the husband, in the post, for being selfess and caring. IT will give both of them a much longer life in their own home.

Dating expert Dan, from The Modern Man, said that everyone places a different level of importance on gifts.
"Some people really don't like gift-giving and just want their presence to be the present. Others participate because they assume it's the right thing to do, whereas others do it because it really means a lot to them and is a token of their love," he told Bored Panda.
According to Dan, "in its purest form," gift-giving is "an expression of love and appreciation for the other person." Though he added: "Yet gifts can also be used to fit in, be liked, show off, gain favor, and so on."

My husband makes a cake for me every year for my birthday. He never made a cake before he met me. Hes had many trials and errors..and has had to redo some of them as the first was a literal flop or the cake overflowed all over in the oven. Hes getting better each year though ... I don't care what it tastes or looks like, it really is the sweet thought that counts ❤

Bored Panda was curious about how men can still surprise their partners if they feel like they've already done everything and they're starved for original ideas. Dating expert Dan noted that all of this depends on three factors: the age of the woman, what she thinks of gifts, and how long the couple has been together.
"For a younger couple in their teens, a teddy bear, a cute trinket, or an inexpensive piece of jewelry is usually something a girl will cherish receiving from her boyfriend. It doesn't need to be any more original than that when in a very young relationship," he said.
"For a couple in their 20s that have been together for many years, it can be a wide range of things," Dan told Bored Panda that some examples might include "perfume, luxury pajamas with slippers, a puppy or kitten, tickets to a stage show she has been wanting to see, along with a gift voucher for her to buy a dress at her favorite store, etc."

This needs to be higher up. Fancy gifts can be nice but this has so much meaning and can help brighten the darkest days. I created a similar gift years ago except it was a scroll with 100 Things I Love About You as a 1 Year Anniversary gift, but I think maybe it's more valued for those who have Words of Affirmation as their Love Language because it was read over quickly and then lost. I wasn't too upset though because at least I created it, which put it in writing rather than just hidden away in my head/heart.

The obvious needs to be said: giving gifts feels gooooood! People are incredibly social beings, and our brains reward us for cooperating with others and being kind. We are, essentially, hardwired to care about others and form long-lasting bonds. Nearly all cultures also value altruism in some shape or form as well.
However, at the same time, we’ve got a competing instinct at play. One that deals with mistrust and survival.
Psychotherapist Silva Neves explained to Bored Panda some time ago that these two instincts—kindness and survival—are in competition with each other. There’s always that nagging thought at the back of your head or in the pit of your stomach that, hey, your kindness might somehow backfire on you. That’s just how things are. However, that only means that choosing to be kind shows just how much we truly care about others.

“It [kindness] is also good for others, obviously. So kindness is actually something that we, humans, are naturally driven to. The sense of kindness is in competition with our survival mode, so, as human beings, we tend to live in contradiction, between kindness (opening our arms) and protection (closing our arms).”
Altruism, kindness, and generosity can take many different forms. The most obvious is giving someone a gift, however big or small you feel it ‘needs’ to be. Even something as seemingly ‘insignificant’ as an apple, a piece of candy, or a handwritten note can make someone’s day. Meanwhile, a gift that is meaningful, practical, and fulfills your partner’s long-held dreams is definitely going to make them smile and jump with joy (tears are optional).

Clear cedar is a wood which is free from almost all knots. As for how, firstly pics #1 and 2 are out of order, pic #2 is the basic soundwave shape after it has cut with a router, and pic #1 is it after being smoothed/sanded. Then they will have cut the shaped wood into slats, mounted and oiled (or stained) the wood to produce the final product in pic #3.

For our first Christmas, my boyfriend (now husband) learnt how to crochet, so that he could make me a little doll of him. We didn't get much time together at the start of our relationship and I missed him so badly at times. I was shocked when I realised he made it himself... dude learnt to crochet IN-THE-FREAKING-ROUND, just so he could make me a gift. Needless to say, I treasure my hubs so much.

My 1st Wood Project: I Designed And Made This For My Girlfriend - It’s A Napkin Holder
The story behind it is that I would joke how my girlfriend didn’t have a napkin holder. After a few times of this, I figured it is a good excuse to try out woodworking. It was a great project because I got to use all sorts of different tools and completely design it myself. It’s not perfectly the way I drew it up, but I think it turned out well and wanted to share it with you guys! Besides, I was able to learn the fine art of hiding and adjusting your mistakes so it looks intentional! I surprised her with it today and she loved it.
Woods from darkest to lightest are Walnut, Cherry, and Maple.
I think I can safely say I found myself a fun little hobby here!

So my husband knows that since moving out to the East Coast I've missed Hot Puffcorn with a fiery passion because it's not sold out here. So tonight, he walks into the store, sees the stand of Hot Popcorn and thinks "I found it!!!" and proceeds to wipe the shelf clean of the product and buy me every. single. bag. He comes back to the car, super proud of himself and watches me expectantly, only for me to explain that there's a difference between the "puff" and "pop" corn. Yea I feel you. I asked my guy to drive me to a gas station once and bought flowers for myself. When he asked why, I told him it's mother's day and I'm not the one who should explain that to our kid. (She knew all about father's Day from me and we celebrated it every year with him). He had birthday a day after mine too so I was always cooking and cleaning on my birthday. Glad he's an ex now.

That second part is what makes it a good and loving and healthy relationship; when you really *know* what the other person needs and appreciates. This whole article was incredibly heartwarming.

Just be thoughtful. Dose t need to be much. Just think of something that would help her out or makes her smile. Anything our partners do that's thoughtful means the world to us. Not everyone has certain skills but the thoughts that go into it are important. Sometimes it's as simple as leaving a post it on the coffee marker that says I love you have a good day.

One slow day at work many moons ago waiting for phone calls to come in a found a bunch of pennies in the desk drawer. Realized the dates on them a started remembering events in our lives in those years. So I attached them to paper and wrote out what the event was. Year she was born year we met married ect. Brought it home. She has it framed on the wall still all these years later. She knows no matter what I'm doing I'm thinking of her. 😉 Just little things I'm telling you. 19 years and counting.

My man became infatuated with tie dye anything last year. Always on a budget and knowing how much thought he puts into gift giving I told him I wanted tie dye bed sheets for Christmas. Oh and he delivered, on St Patrick's day. When I rushed to put them on my bed I cried. He not only delivered with a gorgeous bottom sheet that reminded me of a Monet but hid little hearts and love messages in the design, so me, and then he did broader bolder colors and designs on the top sheet, so him. All the time, the thoughtfulness, the love he put into those sheets, it overwhelms me. He randomly shows up with little gifts and surprises for me all the time. I could fill a house with them all.

Our Golden Retriever passed young due to a fast moving cancer. We lost him at 3:15 on Christmas Eve day. A few years later he asked for help in the garage, normal for us. He had me lift a tarp from a motor lift. On it was a life sized chainsaw carving of Bacchus. It was years later but at exactly 3:15 pm, Christmas Eve day that he gave it to me. We both cried. And yet another thoughtful gift. One of so many. New Years Eve about 20 years and 2 months married. Walked me into the bedroom. On the bed sat a familiar box but I couldn't place it. It contained 2 years worth of every letter we'd written to eachother while he was hundreds of miles away at school. Yes, the snailmail days. We sat on our bed for over 4 hour reading them to eachother. Alot of laughs were had at our younger selve's expense. These are only an iota of thoughtful gifts I've gotten from him, whether it was a physical item or a gesture of love, over about 30 years together. Not sure how I got so lucky.

I just would like to leave a reminder that people have different love languages. Some people crave to receive or really love to make fancy gifts; others just don't find gifts that important. If your SO is not creative in gift giving to you or if you feel that they do not appreciate the thoughtful gifts you put so much effort in, this does not necessarily mean that they do not love you! Maybe they just speak another love language? Don't suffer in silence or secretly nourish a resentment because of that - talk about it and find out! You will most probably both have an easier time afterwards. There are even tests online where you can learn about the different love languages and find out which one is yours. (I will quickly look it up and post a link.)

This post makes me happy for all these people, but also makes me resent my ex. He never did anything like this for me, and anything nice he did surprise me with was with the expectation that I would DEFINITELY have sex with him. If I didn't, he got mad. There was one time I wrote a song for him and HE'S the musician. He never got that creative for me. I went way out of my way for him (moved across the state for him, changed jobs several times for him, sacrificed several holidays in a row for him) and it was never good enough for him. Thanks to this post, I know I should raise the bar.

All the time, the thoughtfulness, the love he put into those sheets, it overwhelms me. He randomly shows up with little gifts and surprises for me all the time. I could fill a house with them all.

Our Golden Retriever passed young due to a fast moving cancer. We lost him at 3:15 on Christmas Eve day. A few years later he asked for help in the garage, normal for us. He had me lift a tarp from a motor lift. On it was a life sized chainsaw carving of Bacchus. It was years later but at exactly 3:15 pm, Christmas Eve day that he gave it to me. We both cried. And yet another thoughtful gift. One of so many. New Years Eve about 20 years and 2 months married. Walked me into the bedroom. On the bed sat a familiar box but I couldn't place it. It contained 2 years worth of every letter we'd written to eachother while he was hundreds of miles away at school. Yes, the snailmail days. We sat on our bed for over 4 hour reading them to eachother. Alot of laughs were had at our younger selve's expense. These are only an iota of thoughtful gifts I've gotten from him, whether it was a physical item or a gesture of love, over about 30 years together. Not sure how I got so lucky.

I just would like to leave a reminder that people have different love languages. Some people crave to receive or really love to make fancy gifts; others just don't find gifts that important. If your SO is not creative in gift giving to you or if you feel that they do not appreciate the thoughtful gifts you put so much effort in, this does not necessarily mean that they do not love you! Maybe they just speak another love language? Don't suffer in silence or secretly nourish a resentment because of that - talk about it and find out! You will most probably both have an easier time afterwards. There are even tests online where you can learn about the different love languages and find out which one is yours. (I will quickly look it up and post a link.)

This post makes me happy for all these people, but also makes me resent my ex. He never did anything like this for me, and anything nice he did surprise me with was with the expectation that I would DEFINITELY have sex with him. If I didn't, he got mad. There was one time I wrote a song for him and HE'S the musician. He never got that creative for me. I went way out of my way for him (moved across the state for him, changed jobs several times for him, sacrificed several holidays in a row for him) and it was never good enough for him. Thanks to this post, I know I should raise the bar.
