While we sit back, relax and enjoy the slow-passing time at a restaurant table, slowly devouring a savory appetizer, impatiently dreaming of the meal we’re about to be served fresh straight from the kitchen, things can go wrong on the other side of the curtain. Although we’d like to think we are 100 percent sure of the restaurant’s quality, freshness, and hygiene—after all, it’s buzzing with people and you couldn’t trick them, right?—this is not always the case.
In fact, the restaurant industry and especially the very core of it—the holy kitchen—is notorious for keeping its secrets tight shut. The good and the bad ones. From reheated shrimp cocktail to restaurant staff having nicknames for regular customers, to a chef that cooks expensive meals 11 hours a day only to have dino nuggies at home.
Thanks to the subreddit “Kitchen Confidential,” there are a lot of stories to discover about the daily bread and butter of food industry professionals, so we selected the most interesting ones below. Scroll down and after you’re done, be sure to check out more kitchen confidential posts right here!

So Many Orders, So Few Tips
Seems Accurate
There are many reasons why people love eating out. We like the fun of it, the change of place and atmosphere, the opportunity to see people and meet friends, to dress up and relax, forget about things back home or at work, treat ourselves, or simply save time. All are solid reasons just showing how much we all waited for the restaurants, eateries and cafes to open again after the worldwide lockdowns.
Having said that, we can't ignore the obvious—it’s getting pretty darn expensive to eat out. Restaurant prices have increased by 5.8% since the beginning of 2021, which is the highest 12-month increase since 1982. This is because groceries got more expensive this year, with the overall cost rising by 6.4%, which is the largest 12-month jump since 2008. The numbers are mind-blowing. Just think of it—the cost of beef has risen most, with a 20.9% jump. Overall, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that consumer price inflation for goods across the board has risen by 6.8%.

I Don't Want That Ham If It's Been Processed, I'm Trying To Eat Healthier
Good Work, Tyler!
What does that mean to us? Well, eating nice and well is getting very costly. This applies to both restaurant meals and home dinners, and even breakfast plates. Especially if we’re talking about nutritious and well-balanced diets. It’s no secret that many people are convinced, probably more than ever, that eating cheap and healthy is impossible, and that healthy foods cost an arm and a leg.
To find out how true that is, Bored Panda spoke with Charlie Middleton, a lecturer in Nursing at the University of Dundee. Charlie has a broad area of interests including health inequalities, nutrition, and the early years of life.“One example is how certain foods are marketed as so-called 'superfoods' ( i.e. avocado) and are given higher price tags, but many very nutritious foods are actually very cheap,” she told us. “Another is the way researchers have measured the cost of food... Consider two bars of chocolate, one regular and one with less fat. If we use a price-per-calorie measurement, the lower-fat chocolate bar seems more expensive because it contains fewer calories.”

I Don't Disagree With This
However, the studies comparing prices per unit weight of food from the same food group reveal interesting results. “They show how healthy options are often cheaper—for example, if we think about a source of protein; 200 g of chickpeas versus 200 g of chicken breast. Chickpeas are often priced cheaper than a chicken breast.”
When asked what cheap and nutritious products we should all add to our grocery shopping bag, Charlie said that there are many things. “In general, plant-based products cost less than meat or fish, but tinned products can be cheap and nutritious options if these are a part of your diet. Vegetables in season are often cheaper than others. At this time of the year in the UK, root vegetables are very cheap and affordable. Dried red lentils (for example) are store cupboard ingredients that cost pence and can be kept for years. Frozen vegetables also keep for long periods and remain nutritious.”

Just A Friendly Reminder That It's Ok To Quit Your Job
Some skeptics claim that cheap and healthy meals take ages to prepare and that’s their biggest disadvantage. But Charlie argues the opposite. “Lots of cheap and healthy foods can be cooked in minutes. Tinned tomatoes make a great base for a pasta sauce and cost a lot less than processed sauce. Add seasonal vegetables and legumes to increase the nutrition. Batch cooking for the week ahead, and freezing portions also saves time,” she concluded.

Was Handed This Allergy List By A Customer. Things Went Downhill From There
I’m sorry for the person with all these allergies, but you can’t realistically expect to eat in a restaurant in that situation. Perhaps they should ask if they can bring a pack up from home and pay corkage on it.
I have a friend whobis this ridiculously allergic. The one time a year she goes out with us we go to a place that's ok with her bringing her own lil tupperware container. That way she gets to feel part of the crowd too.
Load More Replies...During a fancy dinner one of the guests at my table says to the waiter she is allergic to leek. I mention thats unusual. And she says she just doesn't like the stuff. If you don"t like leek, just ask the staff not to pur it in your dish. But don"t make up allergies.
Especially that allium family plant allergy is one of the rarest and most severe existing - I have this and I go everywhere with my EpiPen just in case. Sadly many cooks and waiters DGAF about it and think I am joking, because "there is no leek / onion / garlic allergy" welp, there is, and it will someday kill me.
Load More Replies...Personally, I would prefer to cook my own meals if I had problems with half of what's on the list. And rtestaurants would definitely prefer I stay home.
That’s not an allergy list. This person is trying to follow the Autoimmune Protocol diet. I follow this diet for health reasons. But I would NEVER expect to find food that I can eat at a restaurant when I’m being strict about this protocol. I mean come on.
It seems like a chicken and rice dish or a nice steak salad are both possible.
Load More Replies...Steak, gravy thickened with cornflour, green veg drizzled with olive oil, sweet potato chips. Let's hope the person had the nouse to pick a restaurant that featured things they could eat on the menu . . .
Or just go to a steakhouse and get a side salad as well
Load More Replies...The problem is that eating out is a social thing and you don't always get to pick. It's so and so's birthday, are you gonna be the ass who didn't come, the ass who wants her not to pick her favourite restaurant or the ass with the allergy list? Pick a problem.
You have to deal with being the person who calls the restaurant beforehand and lets them make preparation for you. Expecting them with coming up with something specially for you ad hoc is plain rude. They won't even be able to guarantee that their ingredients don't contaminate each other.
Load More Replies...Oh no, I have a long list of spices and condiments, they are a migraine trigger for me. It is hell going to a restaurant, which is why I rarely go.
There are diseases that actually do make people allergic to this many things. MCAS is one of them.
Yes and mastocytosis. I unfortunately have mcas. Eating out is a huge issue. But you can find those who are willing to work with you. Posting negative comments about someone who has lots of allergies tells you a lot about the person.
Load More Replies...If you make it from scratch, most things can be altered easily enough; it just takes time learn to do it well. I had a friend who's wife was allergic to corn in any form. In the States, it's almost impossible to avoid. But my friend learned how to alter almost every kind of food available to humans so her wife could safely eat.
Load More Replies...Probably because it's just a fad diet or a person who usually eats the same meal everyday.
Load More Replies...I was deemed "allergic" to many, many food items. I was a teenager then. I kept tons of food out of my system to the point I developed a brain disease from a vitamin deficiency that affects me dearly now with no balance, severe nerve damage in my legs among other disasters. I eat anything and everything now bc I said f**k it. Be careful. Not my parents nor my doctors advised me to take vitamins and that's all I needed.
Why would you entrust strangers to this extent? Just stay home. You'll live longer.
Lots of haters here but imagine if it was your loved one as I have. She is allergic to almost everything and she hates it. She can die of peanuts are opened near her, has her throat close up of soy is in anything etc… She doesn’t like being allergic and hated when people are ignorant as to why she would need to ask about cross contamination. She doesn’t bother eating out any longer which is very sad. She also has an EpiPen on her at all times and has to make sure anyone coming near her hasn’t just touched peanuts or nuts that are packaged in the same facility as peanuts. F**k off all of you who find it funny or b******t. Yes there are those “I’m gluten free please pass the bread” c***s who do it since it’s a celebrity driven fad but gluten allergies are hell but not as deadly as other food allergies.
Marge Simpson at the Frying Dutchman: I'm allergic to fish ... Waiter: ... Marge: I guess I'll have a glass of water ... Waiter (shaking head): ... Marge: I have some Tic-Tacs in my purse ... Waiter: EXCELLENT CHOICE, MADAM!!
I have multiple serious, life threatening allergies and it sucks. I don't go out to eat, it's just not fair to expect a kitchen/restaurant to have to deal with it all. I've learnt to cook and my food is great so friends usually come over for dinner instead. The only exception is my partner's family who made a point of learning dishes they could cook for me, which led me away because I know how tricky it is. The person with the allergies pictured should have phoned ahead to see if the kitchen could accommodate them, at the very least!
Hmmmmmm Ok, not even my friend Marcus has this many allergies but I've found something for him to eat before, I will do it for whoever this is! Just uhhhhh... Give me a year *1 year later* Ok, using Gluten free Flour and Sunflower Spread, you could perhaps make puff pastry. Failing the Sunflowers, Voilife vegan butter. After making the pastry, fry off some meat and steam some veggies and then use the left over meat juices to create meat gravy and you should have This specific person safe Parcels with some outstanding Gravy
Sabich salad! In case chickpeas are legumes just put only tahini. And no egg of course. Chicken and rice dish Vegetable soup
If you cannot have leek - you cannot have anything from allium family: onions, garlic, ramp etc.
Load More Replies...Was is connector to a food order, or did he just thought you needed a list ?
I REALLY hate it when people say they have food allergies as an excuse not to eat food that you do not like😤 Went out with friends and one in the group said he is allergic to tomatoes. While eating his food, I grabbed my sons epi pen and stuck him- he put ketchup on his burger and fries. 911 was called. He finally said he does not like tomatoes.
You can also be allergic without having anaphylactic shock. It's stupid to just inject someone without making sure that they would indeed have an anaphylactic shock
Load More Replies...are you legally allowed to refuse a customer if they have this many allergies?
Plenty of things they can eat. I am allergic to chicken and rice as well as all vegetables and fruit. I eat emu and duck and bison. Im still alive.
Load More Replies...Yes..there are diseases such as eoe, fpies, mast cell disease that can cause this
Load More Replies...If you *actually* have intolerance for this many foods, you don't show up with a card. You contact the restaurant way ahead of going there, provide a list and ask if they have anything on their menu they could prepare that was safe for you.
oh, yeah, sure, IF you know before where you will be taken, because it is not always the case. Just think any work arranged lunch.
Load More Replies...Freshly squeezed apple juice and a bowl of blackberries for you then
Most allergies are anything but. I worked in the industry for almost forty years and whenever I heard, "I have a..... allergy" I would question it. My wife is genuinely allergic and would suffer anaphylaxis if she has capsaicin, but most people are either avoiding certain things or just being difficult.
Or have severe intolerance, that is not taken into consideration when they ask, so they just say allergy. And allergies also may be milder or more severe. What is your point then? If someone did not die, they've lied? srsly?!
Load More Replies...Pretty sure they just don't like some of those things. Mushrooms, for example, are gross. I'd never claim an allergy
I had a friend who was actually allergic to this many things and more. She had to be on a very strict diet because she was genuinely allergic to almost everything.
Load More Replies...Hello sir, I've checked with the wait staff and kitchen staff. After careful checking, the only thing edible for you is the menu you're holding. Would you like fresh ground pepper on that?
That's their problem. They should eat at home. Restaurants have no idea what is in the food!!!
If restaurant has no idea what is in the food - it is not a restaurant, rather a bar or fast-food with prepacked meals. The restaurant is where ppl actually make fresh food from scratch for you and you wait for it.
Load More Replies...Because it is a social thing you oftentimes are forced to do if you want to have family and friends and any kind of social network to support you. That is why. As someone with many severe allergies to food I do tell you - we do not enjoy eating out. We have to do it, because you neurotypicals with zero empathy made it a shitshow to be in with all the peacock dances and rituals around "being part of society".
Load More Replies...I am not sure how you can be "allergic" to potatoes. As my doctor explained to me, you can only be allergic to proteins. If you were allergic to carbs you would die as then you could eat nothing. He said that there has only been ONE person reported allergic to carbs, but further investigation proved that the "carbs" contained meat protein. Potatoes are pure carbs. Perhaps the skin was "contaminated"?
Assuming that the list os true, problem is eating in restaurants is a social event. It's probably not easy to be the person that need to hands this list to the wait staff, but It's also must be hard being the person that needs to avoid a lot of social gatherings. This person will always be called out for "being a jerk", he/she can't win on this. That's just sad
Load More Replies...And you should be stripped off canadian citizenship for pein an a s s h o l e.
Load More Replies...How do they safely leave the house?! Seriously, must breathing in a restaurant could be dangerous.
Here's a nice piece of freshly harvested lettuce. It's our chef's signature dish of the day. Bone appetit
If you are allergic to that many things, you should not chance it at a restaurant. There is way too much chance of cross contamination. That makes A LOT of work for the staff. Then again, I am going to guess that this person suffers from borderline personality disorder as opposed to all of those allergies. Could be wrong, but more likely than not.
So perhaps they would prefer it, but had to go, to be "a part of the community"
Load More Replies...oh man, as a pharmacist I would have so much fun with this - I'd do a full intake on them, and ask what their reaction is to each individual item separately, when it was last experienced, if it required hospitalization, how long it took to recover, etc etc etc
You should never work as a pharmacist then, because you are a s#itty person altogether and should not be allowet to sic, elderly or other type of people who are suffering.
Load More Replies...It's hard for me to take something seriously as medical info that's typed in comic sans.
To your information - people with autism, dyslexia and some with severe astigmatism use comic sans because it is easier to read for them, since each letter is slightly different.
Load More Replies...How do you know? I am allergic to most of these things and a lot more.... it is not funny. Then i don't go out to eat, because i can't!!!

If work environments would be less toxic people wouldn't flee their job to search for a better one. It is all a matter of how people are treated and paid. But unfortunately hire and fire plus exploitation is still the essence of capitalism in the US. And politicians won't change that as they get bribery from companies to keep the status quo.
Just knowing humans like that exist is frustrating. How we treat people matters and if it weren't for the horrible people in this world. The rest of us would be existing and thriving just fine.
