Walking down a flight of stairs can be as mundane an activity as tying a pair of shoes. Most of us treat it as something that is second nature, completely forgetting about the inherent dangers. To paint quite a grim picture, various law firms have reported that over a million people in the US get injured each year falling down a stairway.

Now, this isn’t a doom and gloom post as much as it is a reminder of the things and activities that can actually badly hurt us (or worse) if we get too careless. It could be swimming in the ocean, posting personal details online, or being out in nature, among many others.

These people on Reddit also shared their insights, which you will find as you scroll through.

I spent some considerable time around and near sea, and the scariest thing is - never saw any sea animal going to shore to take leak or dump. So swimming in ocean is basically swimming in toilets water.

I remember one time I did this and the dog's handler was surprised and asked if I had a dog who was a rescue (I did). She explained she was a therapist working with shelter dogs: her job was making them overcome their trauma so that they could be adopted. But too many idiots in the street go like, "Hey, can I pet your dog ?" and don't even wait for an answer. Then they complain about the dog being aggressive because they're too stupid to understand that a dog who has been regularly beaten up *doesn't* understand you're raising your hand to pet them... It results in so many poor dogs being deemed "unadoptable" and put down just because some humans can't understand a living creature isn't a doll to play with.

If you pay attention to the dogs body language you can tell which dogs are comfortable with strangers and which ones aren’t. People are always amazed when their dogs pull them to come to me (probably because I’m a crazy chihuahua mama and I smell like a dog). I’ve been jumped on playfully and licked by dogs their owners claim they “never do that to strangers”! Babies are also fascinated by my face and voice for some reason…my grandson just stares at me and smiles away. He’s 8 months old now!

Well there are people who are blasé about it, lots of unsafe practices are commonplace, perhaps not so much doing wiring like in the picture, although that too, failing to isolate the circuit before so doing, but much more things like damaged wires, multiple adaptors in a single socket, exposure to water, etc.

ARGH - when it comes to risk it’s not black and white, more or less dangerous not dangerous or safe. That being said speeding is not inherently that dangerous and the muppets who say it is are either lazy (police) or stupid (politicians) otherwise no one not even police should be allowed to speed. Inappropriate speed on the other hand is - 90mph on a uk motorway in a decent car in good weather and low traffic is 20mph over the limit and still “safe” but add snow and 20 under is fùcking lethal. The problem is people are generally idiots and drive distracted and speed etc and as such can’t be trusted and speed cameras are easy. What we really need is stronger enforcement of dangerous driving statutes.

“Doesn’t Mean It’s Safe”: 47 People Share The Most Dangerous Things That Are Often Dismissed Walking around or behind a horse without keeping your hand on it.

Horses can get very scared very fast and a well placed kick can beak your neck, leave you a vegetable or even stop your heart.

If you must move around one, keep a hand on it after it is aware of your presence and slide it with you so it knows where you are, also stay very close to it the whole time so the potential kick has less wind-up.

Yup. It's safer to be closer to the horse than further away if you're going behind it. If you're closer you're out of range of the hooves. A kick with all the force at the end of the hoof is where it's most dangerous. Source: I've had horses for 40 years now. Most domestic horses don't go around kicking humans anyway - they save that for other horses.

And don't get that close unless it's your horse or belongs to someone who trusts you enough to let you that close. Horses cannot see directly in front of their muzzle or directly behind their tail. Always approach a horse from the side.

Not that it’s a good idea but in general driving close behind a lorry etc on a motorway and so on is not that dangerous as they can’t stop anywhere near as fast as “your car”. Total stopping distance is calculated as “thinking time” and “braking time” as a the thinking time is the same you can “safely” get closer to a lorry than a car as you can outbrake them. That being said not being able to see past them isn’t great and you don’t want to be close behind them if they start reversing.

Just instinct, doesn't matter how well trained or well behaved they are, if cornered (like on a leash and waiting in front of a shop). Do not approach dogs that do not know you. Never forget that any animal will fight back when it thinks running is not an option anymore.

Animal Etiquette like: Do Ask 1st before approaching/petting. And Don't Tease the dog while it's eating. Yes, this should be done both at home and in school. And Human Etiquette? Well, would you (human) appreciate me pretending to kick you while you're eating? No you would not. And would you (human) allow me to just (out of nowhere) walk up into your house? No!? Why not? What do you mean by "I'm a stranger"? ... bottom line, Etiquette. Learn it. Teach it. Use it.

I have. Cheap garage doors with long coil springs. No harm done in this case, but a couple in a three car garage broke and flew hard enough to break things in their way. At least such springs should have a safety cable running through them so they don't fly across the room. It is possible to design a door with safer springs, but more expensive. The danger is real, though. Remember a garage door is heavy, and the springs do most of the lifting, When the door is down, the springs are under high tension. If one breaks it releases nearly half the weigh of that door all at once.

Two people just died yesterday in Victoria, Australia, in a small creek. From what the coops could tell, a child went in and started drowning, then an adult jumped in to save them and they both drowned. It was a very narrow creek that often doesn't have a lot of water, but we have had a lot of rainfall in the last week and it was deeper and had a faster current than normal.

When I was a kid, my parents would regularly take me and my little brother to play in a river: clear water barely 50cms deep, barely any current, even if you went further, it wasn't much more than one meter deep. A couple of tourists with kids our age once stopped by for a picnic. We didn't speak their language but being kids, it wasn't a big issue. We were playing in the water when my parents checked their watch, called my little brother over and tried to tell the couple they should call their kids *right now*. They didn't understand because I was still standing there and the river was still looking the same, but they finally told their kids to get out because my parents kept gesturing and insisting "Out! Now!" Well, those tourists understood why when this huge 3 meters tall wave seemingly came out of nowhere and dragged me 50 meters away... This is why you should never question the locals when they tell you that you shouldn't swim in a river or a lake: they know better than you.

Crosswalks are especially dangerous at intersections (the favorite place to place them because traffic signals are already there for cars) - the traffic is from multiple directions and cars tend to be looking for cars, not people or bicycles which are small and vulnerable. Mid block crosswalks with pedestrian islands (if the roadway is wide) and lights are safer.

There was a news story last night in Australia about women who are doing 'free births', labour without any medical help. The government is considering making it illegal, though some advocates worry this will just drive it further underground. One women on the story (who had chosen free birth because of influencers online) had about 50hrs of labour, with a non-medical doula, and after her husband finally called an ambulance they did an emergency birth and the baby died. Another almost died herself, though the baby survived.

I have to check the UV rating before I take children outside during half the year, to know if we need to 'slip, slop, slap' on protective clothing and sunscreen as a teacher. It is hard to convince children that even when there is a lot of cloud cover etc, the UV can be dangerously high. For example, yesterday it was 17c and overcast, the UV was still 5 (over 3 is bad) at 4pm.

It's not the religions themselves that are dangerous, but the people who use them. Religions in their basic forms are mostly really peaceful, it's always some people who twist it to gain power. Religions might make it a bit easier for those people to excert their delusions somewhat lawfully, but they would probably find some outlet to do it even without. (I don't want to defend any monstrosities done in the name of religions, just saying that those were made by monstrous people using religion as their shield and cover).

Even I can admit that nobody's perfect, and neither is their religion. Christianity gets a lot of negative stereotypes because of US folks, and Hinduism basically says that you literally can't interact with people directly if they aren't Hindu, or based on how they're born. Then there's Buddhism and Confucianism, which are somewhat closer to philosophy considering lack of a divinity

Last month when I was driving to work one morning, there was a junk filled truck in front of me. Well, they didn't have everything tied down. A HUGE pallet flew out. I had to slam on my breaks and swerve into the lane next to me. Even though he was several car lengths ahead of me, the wood still almost hit my car. Might not have ended me, but probably would have ended my car and severely hurt me.

Petting dogs you're not familiar with. So many people just walk up to dogs and start trying to pat them, and then have the gall to be offended when the dog is anything less than enthusiastic about being petted by a stranger.

The simple truth is that, like people, dogs have different personalities and even those raised by perfectly good families and socialized as pups can end up with attitude problems. You also never know what could set off a dog or what hidden trauma it may or may not have. I have seen so many people who try to push forward even when the dog is already growling at them. You'd think they'd realize that the dog is explicitly warning them that it's gonna bite if they come any closer, but they don't listen. They think it's funny/cute/a test and still try to pet the dog since they "have a way with animals".

Approach all dogs with caution, ask first how friendly the dog is, and don't be mad when the owner is blunt and tells you to stay away.

Saving someone with a heimlich grip. You can definitely rupture someone's organs with this move and people have died as a result of being saved by this procedure. Always send someone to the hospital after doing this as the victim might otherwise bleed to death in their sleep that night.

That is a stupid statement. So, you rather let the person die than trying to save them because you are worried that you MAYBE damage something? To rupture organs you also have to be pretty brutal, if they would rupture that easy people would die every time they sneeze

Perfectly safe as long as it's been properly covered an refrigerated. There was one case of death from Bacillus cereus poisoning a few years ago that got picked up and exaggerated all over the interwebs, but that was someone who at a dish of cooked past that had been left out, uncovered, in a warm kitchen for a week or so. Try to avoid them "if you can". Lots of fluids and bland, quiet food like bananas, toast, eggs, etc. might be better 😊

    Sunburns can be very dangerous.

Normally you don't think too much of them, just a few days of irritated/itchy skin, but if you aren't careful you drastically increase your chance of getting malignant melanoma (skin cancer) through a handful of decent sunburns.

Sunburn is a form of radiation damage, not only a short time burn like you get from boiling water or a candle flame. It causes severe damage to the DNA that your body has to repair or you get cancer. The more often it happens the more likely the chance for malignant cells surviving and g8ving you one of the most lethal forms of cancer.USE SUNSCREEN

Using a fire escape on an old multi-floor apartment building.

A resident found out the hard way when trying to exit by using the building's badly rusted fire escape. The weight of his body caused one of the "landings" to cave in, even though the landlord supposedly had the fire escape "inspected" for code compliance.

Birth control pills. In some women, they can cause blood clots (DVT or deep vein thrombosis). These clots can form anywhere in the body. Sometimes the blood clots can dislodge and get carried by blood to lungs (pulmonary embolism) or heart (heart attack). When blood clotting occurs in the brain (cerebral thrombosis), they can cause a stroke.

EDIT: I would also like to share that last year I had a CVT stroke because I had been on Estrogen BC for 8 months. 8 MONTHS!!! That’s all it took. Out of the blue, I had severe headache that felt like someone was hitting the back of my head with a baseball bat...every second. I lost motor control in my arms and legs, couldn’t see properly or understand anything. I even forgot my name! Turns out all major veins in my brain were completely clogged by clots. It took over a year of rehab but luckily I have fully recovered. I hope and wish this never happen to anyone ever. Sorry for the long text.

Water is denser than oil. When added to hot oil, it sinks to the bottom where it instantly turns to steam, expanding rapidly (aka exploding) and flinging hot oil everywhere. Salt is not going to prevent that from happening.

He became convinced it was his landlord sneaking in and even set up a camera, but the next day there were more notes and some of the camera's recording had been deleted. His posts continued to get more and more paranoid until a commentor recommended he check for carbon monoxide in his apartment. It turned out to be the case- OP's bedroom wasn't ventilated and if I recall was built above a car park or similar, and the carbon monoxide was causing the memory loss and paranoia. He was leaving the notes himself, and because of the carbon monoxide, couldn't remember doing it.
