“Doesn’t Mean It’s Safe”: 47 People Share The Most Dangerous Things That Are Often Dismissed
Walking down a flight of stairs can be as mundane an activity as tying a pair of shoes. Most of us treat it as something that is second nature, completely forgetting about the inherent dangers. To paint quite a grim picture, various law firms have reported that over a million people in the US get injured each year falling down a stairway.
Now, this isn’t a doom and gloom post as much as it is a reminder of the things and activities that can actually badly hurt us (or worse) if we get too careless. It could be swimming in the ocean, posting personal details online, or being out in nature, among many others.
These people on Reddit also shared their insights, which you will find as you scroll through.

Posting your entire life online. No one needs to know everything about you. Too much risk in something coming back to bite you in the a*s.
People that do this are literally insane.
There are burglars who stalk social media to see when people are on vacation and then empty their homes.
There are stalkers who stalk on social media to find targets as well

Swimming in the ocean.
Yup it can be , if you can’t bloody swim well or even at all , it’s a very dangerous place to be even for excellent swimmers , the tides currents run winds n waves can change in an instant !, never ever go out alone
I spent some considerable time around and near sea, and the scariest thing is - never saw any sea animal going to shore to take leak or dump. So swimming in ocean is basically swimming in toilets water.
Driving. We do it every day. And every day there are more cars on roads. We’re increasing our chances of injury or passing every day.
I think the main concern is that a large percentage of those in car crashes survive relatively unscathed or at least survive. Whereas the odds of surviving a plane crash are pretty low.
Load More Replies...If you think you know a road cos you drive it daily ,you’re an idiot !, you’re more likely to crash ,two mins from home , why ,cos you think you know the roads !, so you drive like an idiot!, ain’t the roads that are the issue. It’s the other drivers on the roads , n that goes for us as can drive Lorry’s to , never get complacent EVER !
Hello and welcome to the first annual Online Comment Awards! This year has had some great entries, but now, for the moment you have all been waiting for. This award goes to the person who goes beyond the standard boundaries and isn't afraid to make a stand for what they believe in. So, please refrain from shouting and screaming as we announce the winner of the 'Most Use of Grammar but Still Illegible' award. And the winner is... Crystalwitch60!!!!!!!!! This person went beyond what we could even imagine, using commas in places no one else would, and even somehow managed to integrate the long-thought-lost space, exclamation mark, and then comma.

Petting strangers’ dogs. Even breeds not generally considered dangerous.
ALWAYS ask if you can pet a dog, and ALWAYS let the dog come to you. Then ALWAYS hold your hand non-threateningly for the dog to approach and sniff, and then - and ONLY then - do you pet the dog.
I remember one time I did this and the dog's handler was surprised and asked if I had a dog who was a rescue (I did). She explained she was a therapist working with shelter dogs: her job was making them overcome their trauma so that they could be adopted. But too many idiots in the street go like, "Hey, can I pet your dog ?" and don't even wait for an answer. Then they complain about the dog being aggressive because they're too stupid to understand that a dog who has been regularly beaten up *doesn't* understand you're raising your hand to pet them... It results in so many poor dogs being deemed "unadoptable" and put down just because some humans can't understand a living creature isn't a doll to play with.
Load More Replies...If you pay attention to the dogs body language you can tell which dogs are comfortable with strangers and which ones aren’t. People are always amazed when their dogs pull them to come to me (probably because I’m a crazy chihuahua mama and I smell like a dog). I’ve been jumped on playfully and licked by dogs their owners claim they “never do that to strangers”! Babies are also fascinated by my face and voice for some reason…my grandson just stares at me and smiles away. He’s 8 months old now!
I have trouble with humans' body language. I have little or no clue about a dog's.

Electricity.
Well there are people who are blasé about it, lots of unsafe practices are commonplace, perhaps not so much doing wiring like in the picture, although that too, failing to isolate the circuit before so doing, but much more things like damaged wires, multiple adaptors in a single socket, exposure to water, etc.

Speeding, using your phone while driving.
And yet, Lady Eowyn, manufacturers keep adding devices and features to distract us from just driving the d**n car.
Load More Replies...ARGH - when it comes to risk it’s not black and white, more or less dangerous not dangerous or safe. That being said speeding is not inherently that dangerous and the muppets who say it is are either lazy (police) or stupid (politicians) otherwise no one not even police should be allowed to speed. Inappropriate speed on the other hand is - 90mph on a uk motorway in a decent car in good weather and low traffic is 20mph over the limit and still “safe” but add snow and 20 under is fùcking lethal. The problem is people are generally idiots and drive distracted and speed etc and as such can’t be trusted and speed cameras are easy. What we really need is stronger enforcement of dangerous driving statutes.
Walking around or behind a horse without keeping your hand on it.
Horses can get very scared very fast and a well placed kick can beak your neck, leave you a vegetable or even stop your heart.
If you must move around one, keep a hand on it after it is aware of your presence and slide it with you so it knows where you are, also stay very close to it the whole time so the potential kick has less wind-up.
Horses are officially the most deadly animals (other than humans) in Australia. They k**l the most people.
Yup. It's safer to be closer to the horse than further away if you're going behind it. If you're closer you're out of range of the hooves. A kick with all the force at the end of the hoof is where it's most dangerous. Source: I've had horses for 40 years now. Most domestic horses don't go around kicking humans anyway - they save that for other horses.
And don't get that close unless it's your horse or belongs to someone who trusts you enough to let you that close. Horses cannot see directly in front of their muzzle or directly behind their tail. Always approach a horse from the side.
Never been kicked but I have had them step on my toes and that REALLY freaking hurts!!
A horse flipping out when you're near it--or worse, on it--is one of the most terrifying things you'll ever experience.
I was around horses as a kid and well remember the sound and smell of a stinky hoof flying passed my head in the dark of the corral. Much later I learned people die that way.
Driving closely behind a truck pulling a trailer, cutting them off or breaking suddenly in front of them. If I'm hauling a horse trailer, I CANNOT stop quickly. You put everyone in danger by doing that.
I was taught that if you can't see their mirrors, they can't see you. Back off until you can.
Not that it’s a good idea but in general driving close behind a lorry etc on a motorway and so on is not that dangerous as they can’t stop anywhere near as fast as “your car”. Total stopping distance is calculated as “thinking time” and “braking time” as a the thinking time is the same you can “safely” get closer to a lorry than a car as you can outbrake them. That being said not being able to see past them isn’t great and you don’t want to be close behind them if they start reversing.
Carnival rides.
Which also makes chasing accountability next to impossible.

Letting small children play with dogs. Especially medium to larger breeds that can do a lot of damage. And yes, I’m looking at you: pit bulls, akitas, German shepherds, etc.
Even that special angel of a dog who has never shown aggression before, can react when feeling stressed.
I will fight anyone and die on this hill!!
Edit: I know not everyone thinks this but there’s a lot of folks out there who will deny that their precious dog COULD EVER do harm. And that is plain false.
my big dog is gentle but my little dog will eat you alive if he dont know you
My dog is really cute (Kooiker), weighs only around 12 kg and I tell everyone HE'S NOT A TOY. Every dog has 42 sharp arguments in his mouth and they will use it if they feel threatened. Just instinct, doesn't matter how well trained or well behaved they are, if cornered (like on a leash and waiting in front of a shop). Do not approach dogs that do not know you. Never forget that any animal will fight back when it thinks running is not an option anymore.
My very large Cain corso plays with my children all the time. He actually gets more gentle the smaller the kid is. He will still eat your face off if he can tell you're making me uncomfortable and won't back off. It's not that my precious monster COULD NEVER, it's that he has been trained to behave a certain way and there are always warning signs before a dog snaps. 🙄
It's your dog, and your kids. They know each other.

Hey Humans! What if we Taught our children How to Act around animals and How to Treat Others (Human & Non Human)! We'll call it Etiquette. Yeah! Animal Etiquette like: Do Ask 1st before approaching/petting. And Don't Tease the dog while it's eating. Yes, this should be done both at home and in school. And Human Etiquette? Well, would you (human) appreciate me pretending to kick you while you're eating? No you would not. And would you (human) allow me to just (out of nowhere) walk up into your house? No!? Why not? What do you mean by "I'm a stranger"? ... bottom line, Etiquette. Learn it. Teach it. Use it.

Garage door springs.
I've installed six garage doors, including stretch and torsion springs. The tools and techniques are extremely simple but the forces are great and you're on top of a ladder. I don't recommend it.
I've never understood why garage doors use springs, rather than counterweights.
This always makes it onto these lists, I'm pretty sure most people posting about them have never encountered them in their lives (and I see this one is 5-y-o lie the rest of them here, so a repost, not surprisingly).
I have. Cheap garage doors with long coil springs. No harm done in this case, but a couple in a three car garage broke and flew hard enough to break things in their way. At least such springs should have a safety cable running through them so they don't fly across the room. It is possible to design a door with safer springs, but more expensive. The danger is real, though. Remember a garage door is heavy, and the springs do most of the lifting, When the door is down, the springs are under high tension. If one breaks it releases nearly half the weigh of that door all at once.

Running water in a steam / river. The currents are much stronger than they look and can easily sweep an adult right off their feet.
Two people just died yesterday in Victoria, Australia, in a small creek. From what the coops could tell, a child went in and started drowning, then an adult jumped in to save them and they both drowned. It was a very narrow creek that often doesn't have a lot of water, but we have had a lot of rainfall in the last week and it was deeper and had a faster current than normal.
When I was a kid, my parents would regularly take me and my little brother to play in a river: clear water barely 50cms deep, barely any current, even if you went further, it wasn't much more than one meter deep. A couple of tourists with kids our age once stopped by for a picnic. We didn't speak their language but being kids, it wasn't a big issue. We were playing in the water when my parents checked their watch, called my little brother over and tried to tell the couple they should call their kids *right now*. They didn't understand because I was still standing there and the river was still looking the same, but they finally told their kids to get out because my parents kept gesturing and insisting "Out! Now!" Well, those tourists understood why when this huge 3 meters tall wave seemingly came out of nowhere and dragged me 50 meters away... This is why you should never question the locals when they tell you that you shouldn't swim in a river or a lake: they know better than you.
"Checked their watches " was it a scheduled dam release?

Crossing the road, even when doing it "properly".
There are a lot of pedestrian and cyclist deaths and injuries at marked crosswalks.
Crosswalks are especially dangerous at intersections (the favorite place to place them because traffic signals are already there for cars) - the traffic is from multiple directions and cars tend to be looking for cars, not people or bicycles which are small and vulnerable. Mid block crosswalks with pedestrian islands (if the roadway is wide) and lights are safer.

E-scooters.
Not inherently dangerous, but people ride them too fast, or on the road (which is illegal), or just too young to understand the potential risks of their behaviour.

Childbirth. A surprising amount of people go into pregnancy not realizing how bad it can be and end up with some sort of impairment, disability, or even death because of it. My mom almost died birthing my youngest sibling. The US has high maternal mortality rates, and yet people act like you’re crazy when you say you don’t want kids.
The trick is always "don't do it uninformed". If you do it, you are willing to risk the risks
A problem when the whole ideals of the society you live in is to start a family. It's easier to convince people to have kids when they don't know how bad it can be.

Zig uag wanderer, getting burned is when you see and feel the damage but even when you just get tanned it is still not good. I am not saying that you are doomed but please believe me when i tell you that your skjn will thank you. A lot of it is genetic, some people spend their entire life in the sun and do not get any problem, other people develop skin cancer at a young age. There is just no point in pushing your luck 😉
I have to check the UV rating before I take children outside during half the year, to know if we need to 'slip, slop, slap' on protective clothing and sunscreen as a teacher. It is hard to convince children that even when there is a lot of cloud cover etc, the UV can be dangerously high. For example, yesterday it was 17c and overcast, the UV was still 5 (over 3 is bad) at 4pm.

Re-ligion.
Way more people are kìlled because they have a different imaginary friend than any other reason, yes.
It's not the religions themselves that are dangerous, but the people who use them. Religions in their basic forms are mostly really peaceful, it's always some people who twist it to gain power. Religions might make it a bit easier for those people to excert their delusions somewhat lawfully, but they would probably find some outlet to do it even without. (I don't want to defend any monstrosities done in the name of religions, just saying that those were made by monstrous people using religion as their shield and cover).
Even I can admit that nobody's perfect, and neither is their religion. Christianity gets a lot of negative stereotypes because of US folks, and Hinduism basically says that you literally can't interact with people directly if they aren't Hindu, or based on how they're born. Then there's Buddhism and Confucianism, which are somewhat closer to philosophy considering lack of a divinity
Organized religion is to spirituality what home owners associations are to nice neighborhoods.
It's almost like there have never been holocausts to purge people of certain religions entirely out of countries or wars continuing to this day over religious ideation 🤷🏼♀️

Knocking somebody out. According to movies you just hit the ground and get up after a couple of minutes of unconsciousness then shrug it off.
When I was a boxer I was knocked out more than once. Probably never "out" for more than a minute or so and back on my feet in 5, but it is a mild concussion (or sometimes not so mild) and while you may be up and functioning you won't be fully back to normal for a few days or even weeks. (Some say I've never gotten back to normal.)
In Australia there are many one-punch (aka King Hits or Coward Punches) deaths each year. Even if someone survives a hit to the head, concussions can lead to CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy).

Load More Replies... Petting dogs you're not familiar with. So many people just walk up to dogs and start trying to pat them, and then have the gall to be offended when the dog is anything less than enthusiastic about being petted by a stranger.
The simple truth is that, like people, dogs have different personalities and even those raised by perfectly good families and socialized as pups can end up with attitude problems. You also never know what could set off a dog or what hidden trauma it may or may not have. I have seen so many people who try to push forward even when the dog is already growling at them. You'd think they'd realize that the dog is explicitly warning them that it's gonna bite if they come any closer, but they don't listen. They think it's funny/cute/a test and still try to pet the dog since they "have a way with animals".
Approach all dogs with caution, ask first how friendly the dog is, and don't be mad when the owner is blunt and tells you to stay away.
I always ask "is your dog friendly" and request permission before I touch anyone's dog.
There is a program in Australia that teaches children about being safe around dogs. They say 1) ask owner, 2) look at dog's behaviour/body language, 3) put hand into fist for dog to sniff and approach slowly, 4) only then pat
Saving someone with a heimlich grip. You can definitely rupture someone's organs with this move and people have died as a result of being saved by this procedure. Always send someone to the hospital after doing this as the victim might otherwise bleed to death in their sleep that night.
This is irresponsible, possibly legally so. They're already dead when you begin CPR, so organ damage isn't a concern. Advice like the item causes people to not try CPR.
Uh you can't perform cpr on someone already dead successfully.
Load More Replies...It is not a recommended action for first aid in Australia. We are taught to use chest thrusts and back blows for choking victims.
The Heimlich hasn't been recommended for a long time. A swift strike on the back is.
Recommendation (last year, France) : five strong slaps on the back, wait after each one, if it fails, Heimlich, then again 5 slaps and you switch from each other until the person breathes again or collapses (then CPR). And always call emergency line for medical advice.
Load More Replies...That is a stupid statement. So, you rather let the person die than trying to save them because you are worried that you MAYBE damage something? To rupture organs you also have to be pretty brutal, if they would rupture that easy people would die every time they sneeze
Please read it once again. It doesn't tell you to refrain to do the heimlich, but to keep in mind that a professional medical follow-up is essential

Normally you don't think too much of them, just a few days of irritated/itchy skin, but if you aren't careful you drastically increase your chance of getting malignant melanoma (skin cancer) through a handful of decent sunburns.
Sunburn is a form of radiation damage, not only a short time burn like you get from boiling water or a candle flame. It causes severe damage to the DNA that your body has to repair or you get cancer. The more often it happens the more likely the chance for malignant cells surviving and g8ving you one of the most lethal forms of cancer.USE SUNSCREEN

Birth control pills. In some women, they can cause blood clots (DVT or deep vein thrombosis). These clots can form anywhere in the body. Sometimes the blood clots can dislodge and get carried by blood to lungs (pulmonary embolism) or heart (heart attack). Not really. You need massive, I mean huge, amounts of NSAIDs to cause gastric bleeding. Paracetamlol (aka tylenol, acetaminophen) can cause a lot of liver damage at just two or three times the recommended maximum does

I think this is referencing an old Reddit thread: A man lived in a crappy apartment and started finding notes he didn't put there. He became convinced it was his landlord sneaking in and even set up a camera, but the next day there were more notes and some of the camera's recording had been deleted. His posts continued to get more and more paranoid until a commentor recommended he check for carbon monoxide in his apartment. It turned out to be the case- OP's bedroom wasn't ventilated and if I recall was built above a car park or similar, and the carbon monoxide was causing the memory loss and paranoia. He was leaving the notes himself, and because of the carbon monoxide, couldn't remember doing it.
What kind of notes? "I'm watching you" or "Turn off the stove when done". Scary either way. I suppose.
Prescribed medicine. Just because it’s prescribed doesn’t mean it’s safe.
OP must not live in US, where prescription d**g ads contain enough warnings to make you seriously wonder why anyone would take them. Also, there is always the possibility of finding you are allergic to a prescription. (Do not take if allergic to xxxx, breastfeeding, pregnant, trying to become pregnant, have s******l thoughts, or own a dog. Seek medical help for erections lasting longer than four hours. Consult your doctor about any unusual bleeding, excessive thirst, blurred vision, or problems breathing. Etc., etc., etc.)
Possible side effects include itchy fingernails, and/or death.

Eating cinnamon.
I'm guessing they mean "by the spoonful," such as in the cinnamon challenge that was weirdly popular a while back.
Half a teaspoon??? How can I make cinnamon toast with only half a teaspoon???

Edit: my understanding of the physiology was wrong. It has more to do with impaired blood flow to the brain than blood clots.
Falling in love. If you do it with someone who doesn't care enough to recognize the significance it could be the death of you. It's probably going to be the death of me.
"Falling" is recognized as dangerous in every other context but romance.
Basically, then, being alive is dangerous. It has a 100% mortality rate.
This list missed the most underrated dangerous thing of all. Sport. All sports, not just extreme sports.
Also nutmeg. Two or three tea spoons of it can lead to tachycardia, hallucinations, seizures and even coma. And the hallucinations can even make you k**l yourself
