Many people fear things like being attacked by a shark, struck by lightning, or swept away by a tornado. The good news is that these events are very unlikely to happen. But the bad news is that many mundane and seemingly harmless phenomena are much more dangerous and closer to us than we might imagine, posing a greater threat than the irrational phobias we carry with us.

To learn more about what risks are exactly lurking around us, we asked Bored Panda readers to list some of the things they believe are commonly seen as safe but are actually dangerous. Scroll down to find the most popular answers, and don’t forget to share your own insights below.

I recently realized how much misogyny was ingrained in even my own female psyche from my church experiences growing up. I'm so glad I didn't raise my girls in the church. They will be able to stand up for themselves and think much more clearly than I was able to.

As what the Oklahoma State Superintendent of Schools has decreed: The Bible MUST be taught in all grades beginning in 5th I believe. Forgetting all the other religions. I AM a Christian and a retired public school teacher from Oklahoma. I would have retired or resigned on the spot. There are two arguments here. The First Amendment!! Freedom of Speech and just what was said here: The separation of church and state!!

Anyone who tells you that the American government is not built on Christian ideals is lying or delusional. Too many politicians run on being a "good Christian candidate" and bring their beliefs to law.

I remember a prank where the prankster pretended to be a zombie and started chasing a group of men and one of the group pulled out a gun. In an interview afterwards he was asked why he didn’t shoot it and he said because guns don’t stop zombies. Very lucky guys, both of them.

it has happened, Youtube "prankster" Tanner Cook was shot and wounded by Alan Colie, when he tried to prank Colie with one of those stupid pranks. Colie had a Conceal Carry permit, and shot in what he thought was self defense. A jury acquitted Colie of all charges other than "unlawful discharge of a weapon in an occupied building". Cook and his family still try to justify his stupidity as "he was just trying to have fun"

I watched a video some idiots did and it goes like this: A big black guy (I mean all muscles) sitting in front of a business, taking a break, and on his shirt is written, "SECURITY." The 130 lb prankster goes in front of him and starts calling him names including N while the other moron is filming the whole thing. I'll leave it to your imagination to figure out what happens next. I almost s**t my pants laughing.

They claim it is a top secret military device developed that heals all disorders that the medical corporations are keeping a secret! They have been brainwashed into mistrusting anything that the government and mainstream science based medicine does. So they fall for a device that claims to fix everything with magical rays.

My adult son used to ride but always wore a good quality helmet. One night his bike flipped on uneven pavement and he flew headfirst into the curb. There was a fist size chunk missing from his helmet. He had a concussion and thankfully, no broken bones. I still think of it every time I see a rider with no helmet. You have only one head. Protect it!

One of my very good friends in my teenage years had a dad who had been in a VERY bad motorcycle accident a few years before we met. It had happened on a California freeway. He had been clipped by a car and ended up swerving, clipping the guardrail, and flipping end over end. He had been wearing a helmet and full-body leather motorcycle-riding protective gear. He broke a ridiculous number of bones, and spent some months in the hospital, but survived with no brain damage and without needing skin grafts.

While true, one mistake while riding a motorcycle (be it from the rider or not), and that mistake will either be a life changing injury, or a life ending one without the proper gear. A helmet to protect your head, and a leather/riding jacket and proper pants to make sure you the road cleaners won't have to clean the rider's skin, blood, and other things off the pavement.

Cervical adjustments can cause strokes. The few I experienced left me dizzy and spaced out. Never again. The only effective thing I received from a chiropractor were the exercises. And a physical therapist is better to go to for that. Plus health insurance covers PT. And "applied kinesiology" to pinpoint food allergies is a scam. Got to four different chiros and you will get four different lists of food allergies.

Religion is just another way to control people - some good, some bad. But it really worked on royalty, at least until Henry VIII, since even royalty can be threatened by a painful afterlife. That's why so many churches should be losing their non-profit status when their leaders are directing them how to vote.

Nothing. The problem comes from the religions that think they have the right to dictate to everyone how to behave. A church can set behavioral expectations for its congregation. When it starts getting laws passed to force people who aren't in its congregation to behave that way, that's the problem. And it's happening more and more frequently.

I've known plenty of career military who I trust with firearms even less than their clueless civilian counterparts. I wouldn't even trust them to be in the same room as an unloaded one. And plenty of others who know how to use them but didn't get the unsafe fully beat out of them in basic. Idiot handlers exist all over the place.

That was the FIRST lesson I had with guns, always treat a gun as if it were loaded. The sane applies to many other things too, like always treat power tools as plugged in or energized, and for some treat them as loaded too...

Feeding wildlife is even more dangerous than approaching. Feeding means wildlife becomes accustomed to people and unafraid. Ask any wildlife official. In Colorado it is against the law. Wild animals have been feeding themselves for all of history. Human help is not needed and so very dangerous. You endanger everyone when you feed wild animals.

On the other extreme, the rural area I live in is thinking of legalizing cat colonies. This is when people put out food to feed feral cats. Those cats number in the thousands now just around town. We have four that we chase away daily. They are killing millions of wild birds. They are pissing and peeing in our gardens, peeing on my outside grill, scratching my car hood paint when they climb on top to get warm in the winter. Generally have become a nusance because rural folk think cats are cute.

Getting them spayed and neutered would be more effective than chasing away. Surveyors of cat colonies will do exactly that.

Much more so than approaching or feeding wildlife. Is picking up wildlife, and poking wildlife with a stick and kicking it. In my country it's safe to approach and feed all wildlife, but not to pick the blooming thing up.

We were at Zion and some dude is feeding a squirrel Oreos. He puts the package in the pack and then gets p****d because the squirrel is trying to get in the pack for more. The squirrel is getting pretty aggressive now. This is happening right in front of one of the signs about not feeding the wildlife. I point to the sign, and say yep that's why they say don't feed the wildlife. His response was he was just giving it crumbs so that didn't count as feeding.

Weird how this is changing in younger generations. Back when I was younger (I'm 38), it wasn't uncommon for people to go to tanning salons or lay out in the sun all the time. But I recently went to my 18 y/o niece's graduation party (it was acually a pool party) and - when asked by her parents if she was going to go outside - her response was, "I'm not trying to get cancer!" Personally, I don't think either is the right option... baking in the sun with no sunscreen = cancer... refusing to go outside because of "potential cancer" = a life not truly lived. Balance, people! Go outside, but wear your sunscreen.

My mom and sister used to go to tanning salons when I was a kid in the 80s. I used to spend a LOT of time outside playing (again, 80s XD ) and then I had a pre-cancerous mole removed from one shoulder when I was a teenager. I've been hypervigilant about sun exposure since - and I live in a beach town XD I look ludicrous when I go to the beach fully dressed and sit under an umbrella, but it's better than cancer!

It's literally gunpowder enriched with minerals to give the colours. Here in the Netherlands a fireworks depot that somehow was allowed to exist in city limits blew up years ago. Even with the specially built storage shacks it devastated a huge part of that city and caused enormous grief. And despite a lot of campaigns and cheap safety gear we still get a lot of maimed by their own fireworks people in hospitals on New Years.

Many years ago, the small town I was living in had fireworks for the 4th, and planned to go all out for the grand finale, so had a lot of fireworks stored near the mortars. A kid tossed some fireworks into them, setting them off. It was spectacular chaos, mostly ground explosions, but the blasts knocked over the mortars, and set some of those off, sending large fireworks shooting through town, detonating at low height. Miraculously, no one was injured, and no one's house burned down. We all had to admit in the end that it was the most exciting fireworks show we'd been to! :)

There was a firework sold everywhere when I was a kid that you nailed to a tree (I guess that was the only option) then you light it and it spun around releasing all the fireworks. My neighbors did it, set the palm tree on fire and the ones adjacent to it also went up in flames. Have always disliked fire works and this made it more official for me. Many cities in my area barred them for years and now are allowing them back in, so I dislike whenever the 4th of July rolls around.

My husband came home from his work at 911 and said they had a call that day where a man, in an alley with his friends, kids, and pregnant wife, tried to light a mortar. When it didn't go off, he decided to look. My husband emphasized he didn't blow OFF his head, he blew it UP. Several calls from the surrounding neighbors...Only professionals should be handling these things.

Poorly expressed. Bears are adorable period. There is no problem thinking animals are cute and admiring nature. Just don't be dumb about it. You may think the bear is cute but it doesn't feel the same about you. Also you are not on a Bears food chain. Yes a bear can and will kill you and in desperation eat you. Most bear encounters don't end that way. It's actually very rare. Doesn't mean you should try to get closer or not take an encounter seriously. If you're smart about nature it's really not all that terrifying. Sorry I just have an issue with the framing of Bears as man hunting killing machines. Unless it's polar Bears, still cute but they will for sure eat you. Cuteness best enjoyed from very long distances.

Hold on a moment. During 2020-2022, bears have killed 8 people in the USA. Let's compare that to car fatalities. In the same period, there were 124,558 fatalities. Chances of "death by bear" is 0.000064% in comparison to "death by car". This item on the list should be "cars", not "bears".

At Yellowstone, bison cause more injuries than bears. In fact, domestic animals cause more serious injuries and fatalities in the United States than any wildlife, including snakes, mountain lions, and bears. Dogs and livestock are far more deadly than most people realize.

Buddy of mine experienced this. Pulled up and let the car keep "slow rolling" while he checked both ways. Unfortunately, the "A" pillar (the strut between windshield and passenger window) was blocking is view of someone using the crosswalk. Because both he and the pedestrian were moving, the person was always behind the pillar. Just as he hit the gas, he saw them. If he had STOPPED, he would have seen them right away. Thankfully, he did NOT hit them but it was close enough that they could have reached out and slapped his fender. o.O

What complicates matters even more is that it’s nearly impossible to isolate which chemicals may pose a threat to our well-being, as we’re constantly exposed to toxins at low concentrations.

It's a lower risk but still a risk. And vaping was supposed to be only for smokers to improve their health and risks, now it's a gateway for kids as traditional smoking very expensive.

There's no science to support this assertion...yet. As a vaper, I happen to also believe that grave health consequenses from vaping will be revealed in the coming years and as data rolls in but in the meantime, we simply don't know how dangerous it is - aside from elevated blood pressure and heart rate.

Health issues are more likely to happen when the user is "dosing",. By keeping all the vapor in the lungs instead of blowing it out, glycerin and micro water droplets are kept whitin the lungs, which cause health issues much more earlier than cigarettes.

My mother has lung cancer, (ex smoker stopped 16 years ago, but smoked for approximately 40 years), and when she first had her lung removed we were sat chatting to some other ladies waiting to go into the treatment rooms. One lady was around the same age as my mother, the other was 30 years old. The younger lady had never touched a cigarette in her life, however she had vaped since her early 20s. She had stage 4 terminal cancer. Her surgeon said that she had lungs of an 80 year old who had smoked Woodbines all their life... all down to vaping! Not enough research was done on vaping. It was supposed to cut down on the amount of cigarettes people were smoking. However, even vapes have nicotine and a whole plethora of chemicals that have no business being in our bodies. I live on a thoroughfare from the local school to the centre of the village. Kids between 11 and 16 years of age pass by on their way to and from school - smoking vapes! It is scary!!

The reason most Dutch people don't feel the need for helmets is there's such fantastic cycling infrastructure. Very often cyclists and motorised vehicles are kept separate. It's when cars hit cyclists that the real damage is done. If the cyclists and cars only interact at slow speeds then there's little damage.

Horseback riding too. It's especially bad among people who ride Western (cowboy) style. It doesn't matter how good of a rider you are - if your horse trips as falls you can end up brain damaged for life. That actually happened to an Olympic dressage rider.

"share the road" signs... bike lanes... even bicycle street lights... but that doesn't stop morons from drunk driving or texting or whatever the hell else they're doing. It is WAY too common to hear of a "cyclist hit by vehicle" than it should be. I'll take the cycling trails, thanks.

actually, sleeping in the same bed is rarely the problem. One has to be careful with pillows and covers, not to cover with your own giant cover etc, nothing that will keep the baby breathing in and out the same air, clean bed with secure sides so baby don`t fall out and no smoking. co-sleeping is good for both, falling asleep in chair with baby or with the baby on your belly is not, while breastfeeding in a strange spot is not. So it`s better to co sleep properly, than to accidentaly, sleep deprived take the baby to sleep in a chair, and then fall asleep by accident.

The problem is that theory and reality are two different shoes. I SWORE not to let my baby sleep in my bed. Then when my little one was born, the hospital (which specifically has a very renowned birth unit) MADE me sleep with her the first night. They said it was necessary. Then my midwife - who’s been doing this job for 20 years, who works both in a hospital and as an independent midwife, repeatedly insisted that no sober parent would accidentally lie on their baby and not realise it. All the young parents around me let their babys sleep in their beds. So while I‘m definitely not recommending it, I can absolutely understand how parents end up sleeping together with their babys.

They are suppposed to have a cot that hangs into or just outside of the bed to prevent just that risk. Some midwives are on power trips and that is verabatum from a midwife in my family. There are very good and some bad ones out there which is very scary given how vulnerable mothers to be and new mums are.

"Some day our children will be safe when once inside the schoolhouses of the country — but not until public officials realize that many of the buildings are now but tinder boxes, ready to flare up at the faintest spark of fire, and destroy all who are unfortunate to be caught within the walls. As the author of this work has well said, this great disaster has hastened the day when all of our public buildings — theaters, halls and schoolhouses — will be safe; when we can rest secure while our loved ones bend over their desks, or watch a mimic world depicted on the stage. God speed the day when soul-harrowing tragedies of the sort enacted in North Collinwood shall be a thing of the past!" Food corporations have scientists who design foods to be addictive. Those foods fill our gas station shelves. Those foods offer zero nutrition. I often wonder how scientists and engineers who designed weapons of mass destruction could live with them selves morally. I wonder how food chemists live with themselves knowing they are the true cause of obesity.

"Abortion" doesn't exist. It's baby murder. GTFO. Fyi: Pregnancies are completely safe and harmless. Women are made to give birth. You can mess yourself and your baby up with s****y diet and cosmetics (<- nasty chemicals in them), but it's not nature's or the baby's fault - it is yours and the "doctors" you still believe despite ALL of modern medicine being based on hoaxes.

If a baby is wanted, this is wonderful. If not, she should never be forced to bring it to term because some rich white guys say she should.

This. Blows me away how may women just "want to have a baby" and don't know/understand that it's actually a life-threatening adventure. It's a miracle because women used to die ALL THE TIME, not because of the "miracle of life."

I keep seeing signs on schoolyards saying "Every Child Matters", it should be accompanied by "Support Planned Parenthood", so that un-planned children don't fall into the 'un-wanted' class.

Every pregnancy has a risk of complications resulting in temporary and permanent health problems/injuries and death for the mother and baby. Don’t be so ignorant. The healthiest pregnancy can still end of up in death during birth. You have no way of knowing. Thats why forcing women to go though with pregnancies is just morally repugnant.

My 3 year old managed to get the cap off a jug of muratic acid. I woke up to him saying Hot, Mommy, HOT ! The stuff was burning holes in his pajamas and the fabric was smoking. So much for safety caps. That wasn't the only lid he managed to get off. Another time he got the cap off a bottle of clorox and we rounded the corner as he was taking a swig... We ended up having to put double child locks on all cabinets and doors so you needed two hands to open them. Needless to say, he ended up an only child. Then he discovered the joys of climbing...sigh.

One of the riding tracks she regularly used had a large stone next to the path behind a corner. The horse ALWAYS jumped when noticing the stone. She KNEW the track, but still "WHHOOOPS there might be a predator!!" every freak'n time, it was quite hilarious

Opposite is just as true. Your wrists should touch the steering wheel when your shoulders touch the backrest. Almost noone sits close enough to have enough pressure on the brake pedal for a real emergency stop. I had a great advanced driving safety training once (incl. Drifting, ice, high speed maneuvers etc) and the trainer made us experience the difference in braking when sitting like a fast-and-furious-bro and a real race driver. Easily minus 30-40% breaking distance!

Theory is that we have to give birth premature, effectively. Human babies are born quite early compared to eg chimp babies developmentally, and it's probably because if they were any bigger the mother could not give birth. Bipedalism, necessitating a narrow birth canal, doesn't help either.

broke my ankle on a Trampolin last summer. Every single doctor or therapist I met in recovery rolled their eyes and said something like ".. And another one.. Sigh". Huge upvote on this. I never knew how deadly until I suddenly developed chronic hives/anaphylaxis at age 35. I now have to take a medication. 1x every 28 days or risk anaphylaxis. It's idiopathic or unknown origin. It's not alot of fun

Same! I have a super long list of "allergies" but they all occurred from the hiving condition. It's crazy it can cause anaphylaxis. I even have had to use epi. Good luck with yours.

Yes. My daughter had a kid in her class in elementary school who was so severely allergic to peanuts that opening a package of peanut flips in the same room would cause an anaphylactic shock. So the whole school went "no-peanuts" just for this kid. NO ONE was allowed to bring anything with peanuts, other kids who had peanut butter bread for breakfast had to wash their hands with soap before coming to school etc. Worked well, never heard of an incidence througout the four years.

This is a good school. My sibling has allergies. When they were trying to go to preschool, a lot said they couldn't because they didn't have anyone who knew how to epipen or weren't comfortable doing it or something. Ffs, it's not that hard! (And yes I think in theory this was against the ADA, but c'mon, if you need to use the ADA you probably shouldn't go there.) It's not as bad as that poor kid (peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, sesame, sunflower, so far, but none 'opening a package of peanuts in the same room causes anaphylactic shock' level - so far none are even 'opening a package of peanuts in the same room' level) but still bad enough that parents had to take them to the ER several times.

A few years ago my Sister said that she had a bad headache. A friend gave some Ibuprofen. In less than 1/2 hour all of the muscles in the edges of her body had frozen and it was moving closer to her body trunk. Luckily, her husband was a nurse and worked out what was happening. She was rushed to hospital and they managed to save her.

You are confusing 'plastic surgery' and 'cosmetic surgery'. The American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgeons draws the following distinction: "Plastic surgery training involves a broad scope of procedures to restore the body's normal appearance and function, where cosmetic surgery training focuses exclusively on aesthetic procedures."

As a class A commercial driver, i can attest to the fact that 4-wheelers (any car, truck,, etc that a 15 year old with a lerner's permit cal legally operate on public roads) are definitely deadly. Now, if there was a better vetting process for licensing that would help, but as it stands, it's extremely difficult to NOT get a regular license in the US, and considering the current average intelligence of 'Muricans today, that fact should be terrifying.

In 2022, the five most common ways to die in Australia were: Ischaemic heart diseases (heart attack), Dementia, COVID-19, Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke) and Lung cancer. This accounted for around one third of all deaths that year. During the period 2008 to 2017, there were 266 deaths due to animals. Of these 77 were by horses, donkeys, cows etc, 27 by bees, wasps, hornets, and 22 by dogs. This leaves 140 by crocodiles, sharks, snakes, lizards etc. Australia in NOT a dangerous place to live.

Break those stats down by race/ethnicity, class (income), access to health care, etc., and we'll start to build a picture of the *real* threats people face. Average life expectancy of Aborigines is 8-9 years less than Australians overall; life expectancy for Native Americans is about 7-8 years less than Americans overall. And it's not because of spiders, sharks, or skydiving!

I presume that it's because they expand. Given the apparent propensity of some toddlers (and some idly curious older beings) to pop objects into body orifices, the beads pose a greater risk than their initial physical size might indicate as they grow when they absorb moisture (including from mucous membranes in the nose).

"Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, examined 30 tampons from 14 different brands bought from stores in New York, Athens, and London - and two online retailers - between September 2022 and March 2023. According to the researchers, "measurable concentrations" of all 16 metals they were testing for, including toxic ones such as lead, arsenic, and cadmium, were found in at least one sample. Lead, for which there is no "safe" level of exposure, was found in every sample, the study claims." https://news.sky.com/story/arsenic-lead-and-other-toxic-metals-found-in-tampons-study-says-13175436 It's womens health, so ignored as usual 😒
