There are a gazillion reasons to why adopting a pet is the best idea you can think of. Saving a life and giving a pet its second chance is one. Other benefits include fighting puppy mills, saving money, making yourself a better person, boosting your emotional (and physical) wellbeing, and earning the bragging rights we all secretly crave.
But nobody knows it better than people who rescued an animal and adopted one. And this means, it’s that wholesome time of the month where Bored Panda has compiled the monthly post of the most soul-soothing pics of adopted furry friends. In a previous interview with Bored Panda, Kelly DiCicco, who’s the adoptions promotions manager at the ASPCA, told us that despite the recent surge in pet adoptions due to the Covid pandemic and quarantine, animal shelters are under immense strain right now.“
Since it began, COVID-19 has put an immense amount of strain on animal shelters across the country. Because this is an ever-changing situation, each shelter is facing unique challenges specific to its community.”
Due to social distancing requirements, many shelters had to reduce staff members, which “has meant reductions or limits to the number and types of services offered to the public.”
Moreover, most shelters have been hit financially due to reduced donations and the inability to host in-person fundraising events. It turns out that these events in particular play a key role in annual fundraising efforts.

Poor dog, he has been in a lot of fights. These must have been pretty deep bites. I cannot express how much I detest all cruel people who make money on dogfights.
But while the pandemic has created a lot of new challenges for shelters, many are now implementing innovative solutions to adopting procedures.
“With hundreds of thousands of animals across the country currently in shelters, with rescue groups, and in foster care, animal welfare organizations are implementing innovative solutions, including virtual or socially-distanced adoptions, online meet-and-greets using video chat, and minimal-contact drop-offs or pickups to help these animals find adoptive homes.”
Right now, many shelters are working hard to make sure that each pet in need of a loving forever family will not lose a chance to gain one due to the pandemic.

We had the same issue with a couple rescue cats, where the older cat we'd had for a while snubbed the new kitty. However often when we came home after being gone for awhile, we'd catch them playing together.

Me, Too....grew up with many cats, so devoted to them.... then married a man who didn't tell me until after the wedding he didn't care for them..... turned out he was allergic to fur + feathers...... I was SO disappointed.... I've been 'catless' for50+ years.... to compensate I lavish love + treats on my daughters two kitties and donate generously to cat charities + shelters !

@Angharad Eatough Yup your right, it's because the breed is a siamese cat! The breed traits are that almost all siamese cats are cross-eyed or slant-eyes & all siamese have crystal clear blue eyes!

I love these stories. No senior animal should be without a warm and loving home for the rest of their days. It’s our responsibility as pet parents to have a plan in place in case something happens and they are left alone. Ours will be taken care of by our son.

We raised an orphan squirrel on peanut butter and whole wheat sandwiches. Squirrely Girly was fun, but hyper, running up and down the curtains, up and down my back, just crazy fun. One day we were sitting on the porch and a boy squirrel came down from the trees to chat, and she followed him off into the forest, never to be seen again.

Our Agatha is ths same way. She didn't interact with anyone visiting the shelter for months... until my wife. She came out, talked and was lovely. We're pretty sure she was abused in her first situation, but she is a happy loving kitty now.

Not to justify it, but a lot of people think of themselves as cat whisperers. When a cat doesn't jump on their lap within 4 hours, it's "too shy" and hence gets returned. Our cat Mimi took 4 years to accept us as servants after we got her from a shelter. They told us she was abused and would always be shy.

My dog Evie was returned back to the shelter by some idiots that didn't like her crying in the nights because she was lonely. Evie is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. Some people are just cruel.

I was fostering a brother+sister pair of former ferals. The rescue told me that the boy was "probably destined to be a barn cat" because he was so fearful of humans. I'm typing this as he's snuggled into my side, snoring, while I rub his belly. They'll never be separated b/c they're staying with me forever. <3

A "too shy" cat is only one making sure you're worth it of its kindness and sympathy. Please don't return your cat, he needs to feel secure and safe with you: even though it takes years.

Axel looks quite thoroughly relaxed! That snoozing and drooling pose! One of the sweetest, most snuggly, lap-loving cats we ever had started out not even letting us get near him for several years, living in our yard. We fed him and built a "cat house" for him, so he'd be warm in the winter wind and snow. Eventually, he allowed my son to actually touch him after he sat for an hour or so, coaxing the cat closer and closer. It was as if a switch had been thrown. The cat then loved to be petted and scratched, but still would not enter our house for another year or so. Later, he would carefully come inside, but only if we left the door open so he had a clear route of escape. Over time, he became more comfortable with us and being indoors, and finally, he was the most relaxed lap-toad you ever saw. He would lay on my wife and literally hug her as he slept. He was with us for over 24 years, and he must have been a few years old when he wandered into our yard. He was big, and appeared to have a lot of Maine C**n in him.

My cat has feline herpes too. It affects them similar to us when we have a sinus infection. Their eyes and nose get runny. I’m guessing he has a severe reaction. It’ll heal up. You have to keep their eyes and nose clean going forward though to avoid future flare ups

Awwww! Thank you so much for adopting guinea pigs. People purchase rodents and small animals from pet stores much more often than adopting them. It’s unfortunate but true. I got mine from a pet store, but I know better now and plan to adopt in the future.

It's wonderful when two siblings are adopted by the same person. I had two kit-brothers in my foster care, Oscar and Austin, they were inseparable. Took some time to find a person who wanted them both but it was worth it. (Couldn't adopt them myself, me and my partner already had five).

We can't be sure the trap was in her home. But I agree. Glue traps are awful. The girls where I used to work would set them out. Then, when a mouse got caught, and was screaming as it struggled, tearing it's own skin off trying to escape for hours, they would call one of us guys to come do something about it. Glue traps are the most inhumane thing I've ever seen. I'm surprised they're legal to sell. The girls thought the normal spring traps were too "gross" to use. They're far faster and more humane most of the time, though, in my experience. I made it a point to show them up close how the mice were suffering whenever I was called to deal with one of the glue traps they had set. Pretty soon I stopped seeing glue traps around the place. They're just horrific.

Looks like he might be a 'Marble Tabb y+ White,' not so much a breed but a color classification. As for breed, probably a 'Domestic Shorthair'.

His breed is gray kitty with a white face. Breed is not really an issue in cats. There are purebreds but the best are like this one or an orange one or a calico one or a tortie one.

Adopted This 6 Kg / 13 Lb Boi A Few Weeks Ago. He Has Back Pain Due To Being Overweight, Sleeps A Lot, Can’t Jump Very High And Needs Help With Grooming Himself. Luckily He’s Still Young And According To A Vet Has A Good Chance Of Getting To A Healthier Weight With A Committed Human

He is not that heavy at 13 lbs. He seems tall. He just needs small exercises daily, good quality kibbles and loving care from the parents.

My PC weighs almost 22 lbs. I have cut dry food almost out of his diet. I hope he loses a little weight. Vet did not indicate he needed to, but he is really heavy and always looking for food.

If she’s super inactive, you can slowly move the feeder, waterer, and litter box a little farther away from each other everyday, eventually getting to opposite ends of your house if you can, so she has to walk a bit a few times a day. And like some others have said, a laser pointer or other toy that can get her to move around a bit will be great!

Vet recommended diet, very very few treats of food. Toys, a harness for short exploratory walks, even inside the house. Trip to groomers for a bath might be good to get started.

If you haven't gotten vet advice on a weightloss program, that's a good start. There are a range of diet food and treats available, and you can often find the vet-recommended brands cheaper online. Invest in a Da Bird type toy or a laser pointer, and get her playing. Encourage activity. Teach her to come for treats when called (diet treats, at vet recommended levels), and call her from distant parts of the house throughout the day. Losing weight and getting active will transform your furbaby, and she'll be a happier, healthier, more playfull floof. Best wishes to you both.

Make your own petfood - try mixing small amounts of offal with minced meat, cooked, but also give the cat meat in strips that she has to chew. This will clean her teeth, keep her occupied, and will probably help reduce her weight.

Whatever type of food you put her on (i find dry kibble the best) follow recommended amount, and importantly, ALWAYS measure/weigh that amount out daily & feed no more than that. Make sure any treats etc are taken into account & kibble reduced accordingly. Encourage activity, instead of feeding the kibble in a bowl, use a treat ball so she has to work for it. And/or scatter the kibble across the floor (if circumstances allow), or hide it around the room/house so she has to look for it. Encourage moving more, work out what kind if toys she likes, play with her, get her running around. If appropriate, allow her to exercise outdoors (but be aware she may find additional food sources.)

Its time to smash this erroneous opinion that to buy a dog(or cat) means you get a better animal. There is NO reason to buy from a breeder when there are millions of dogs & cats worldwide that need a home , some are in shelters but many are with smaller charities in foster homes. When you buy from a breeder your money goes into their pockets, many breeders dont care about the dogs or cats and keep the animals in awful conditions. Even "reputable" breeders are doing it for the money. Dogs and Cats are not "things" they are not disposable like a handbag or games console they are vulnerable lives that need a loving home and a family that care for them if you are prepared to give love and care you will get the most wonderful best friend. You need to be fully prepared for the responsibility of having a pet but if you rescue you know that you will be giving a 2nd chance to an animal and they will be as much a part of your family as any human.

Adopting a shelter animal is AWESOME. Dogs should be companions in a loving forever family, not status symbols or one more thing to have around the house.

We adopted our baby boy 4 yrs ago. He was dumped at the shelter 2x, 1st was they had allergies(?), 2nd was he does not like cats. The poor baby is very very skiddish and protective. He is so fricking spoiled now.

I so wish I could adopt another dog.. but.. our shelters are only full of pitties and staffords that had bad bad owners and I don't think I want to take the risk with the other pets I have.

go on-line there are loads of charities that have dogs in foster families in the USA and Europe. As these dogs live in a home their temperament is known and also how they get on with other animals.

I have it on my bucket list to adopt a pittie. I'll have to be super careful (with any dog no matter the breed) because I have free range goats and pigs. There's a missing piece out there for every incomplete puzzle though, so I'm sure I'll find him/her when the time is right.

6 years ago I got my boston terrier, Elli, who was rescued from a puppy mill. She was very jumpy and on edge at first, but warmed up after about half a year. She lived to be 18 years old, and died earlier this year. She wasn't in pain and I stayed with her while she passed. I'll always love you, Elli

Thank you all people, #AdoptDontShop is one of my (c)attitudes either, you can find the cutest cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds or what kinds of animals ever for adoption, you have to pay a fee at the shelters to help them rescue more pets, but if you buy a pet from a breeder you have to pay for the vaccinations, for spaying/neutering, for micro-chipping and more, and the shelter pets´re usually fully vetted yet, so the 100 - 200 € or $ that you have to pay for them as fee´re much cheaper than buying a pet from a breeder and paying for all the treatment and so on would be.

I always point that out to people who don't want to adopt from a rescue organisation (I don't know why) – in SA, the fee for adopting a dog is usually around R1000, and includes sterilisation, microchipping, and all deworming and vaccinations for the first 4-6 months. If you buy a dog or get one for free from goodness knows where, you have to pay for all of those things out of pocket – sterilisation alone can be around R1500 for a female, all the other things are probably going to add up to another R1000+... Adopting a rescue has nothing but benefits for everyone involved. And rescue pets know they've been rescued ❤❤
