Cute And Funny Adopted Cat
He's just expressing his disdain for soft can-openers.
After much study, both distanced and direct, I have concluded that ginger cats are no less intelligent than any other variety. In fact, they are gifted with the understanding that goofiness is endearing to, and can be good for, their soft can-opener's mental health.
PDSA Vet Nurse Gemma Renwick told Bored Panda that adopting a pet can be rewarding because you’re giving a home to an animal that hasn’t got one. “It can be hard work at first, but with some preparation, you can be ready to provide your new pet with their ‘forever home,’” she said.
“The idea of adopting a pet can be really exciting and there are many pets in need of loving homes. Whilst adopting a pet might not always be the quickest process, it’s most definitely worth the wait!” It can take some time for the rescue or rehoming centers to make sure that the potential owners and the pets are the ‘perfect match’ for each other before they start their lifelong partnership.
Some things that they look at include the owner’s lifestyle, routine, as well as their financial situation. It’s essential that the owners are able to give their new pets everything that they need. Many rescue and rehoming centers want to make sure you and your pet are the perfect match for each other, and sometimes this can take time.
I Present To You Indico, He Is A Puppy That I Rescued From A Shelter. He Came Home All Hurt And Skinny
Kudos to you! He is so lucky to have such an amazing new owner ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
A newspaper editor wrote a column about how disturbed she was to learn of an opinion poll’s results revealing that more than a third of surveyed adults “would, under some circumstances, choose to save the life of their dog over the life of a human being, if they could save only one.” She was astonished and dismayed by this regardless of the hypothetical other person being a complete stranger. I, however, was/am surprised the percentage wasn’t much higher! Of course, I wrote to her that (to me at least) it makes perfect sense: Especially with their pets’ non-humanly innocence, how could the owners not put their beloved animal’s life first? … To be fair, however, that editor spent her life on a family farm, which understandably could have created a bit of toughness/callousness towards the assaulted cat's suffering, etcetera.
Adopted A Senior Cat From The Shelter
Thank you. Senior’s are the best. We adopted two bonded “brothers” 14yr old & 15yr old. Best kids ever. We only had them a few yrs the love they gave was immeasurable. We recently adopted an 11 yr . Seniors all the way!
They are the best. I have a 12 year old Rosie who has a great personality and is a giant snuggle bug. 😸
Load More Replies...Thank you for adopting a senior. It's kitten season and it's hard to find homes for seniors now. I foster for a local shelter. Been trying to save a litter that came up from a Georgia kill shelter very ill. We lost one after three days in the hospital, another has been back and forth but he is getting better. The other 4 are finally gaining weight and doing a lot better. I also have a 5-month-old kitten from Puerto Rico who is still too thin but getting there. He literally has angel wings on his back. Thanks again. to all PLEASE ADOPT DON'T SHOP
Especially in that light, he looks like the Kung Fu Master in an 1960's chop-socky movie, about to reveal ancient wisdom at the climax of the story.
“When welcoming a rescue pet into your life, you want to ensure that you build up a bond at your pet’s pace, this can often be slow and will depend on your pet’s age, background, and personality. You have a whole life together ahead, so there really is no rush,” PDSA Vet Nurse Renwick explained to Bored Panda that there’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach. Every pet will bond with their owner and settle in at their own speed.
“A change in their environment can be a stressful time so you might find your new pet has a few accidents indoors (even if they had previously been housetrained). Don’t get angry with them as this will make the problem worse. Make sure you’re giving your dog enough chances to toilet outside and you’re rewarding them with praise and a treat when they go where you would prefer them to,” the PDSA representative shared with us.
“For cats, make sure that you’ve provided enough litter trays for them, you want to have one more than the number of cats you have, as well as making sure that your cat knows where they are.”
I'm Incredibly Pleased With My Decision To Have My Adopted Cat Tattooed
We’ve Been Meaning To Adopt A Cat And Then My Wife Found This Guy In A Parking Lot
I think I am finally over the loss of my orange sweetie pie who passed in February, I am ready to be adopted by another sweet kitty!!! Best way to find a cat, have them find you.
Behold, For Here Is Gertrude
Gertrude was adopted 2 weeks ago! she's 9 and is the sweetest cat i've ever had. she's my first cat that belongs to ME!! and i'm so happy!! she's gonna be my ESA for college since i have horrible struggles with sleeping and have debilitating anxiety. she's got some health issues, but i've always dreamt of having an older cat that i can give my love to till the end of their days. she loves cuddles, getting wet food (especially as an award after her meds!), and is so calm. she loves getting attention
Cats are beautiful and maybe even more precious than humanity collectively deserves. Many can appreciate pet cats’ beneficial effect on the human psyche that most people still cannot fathom thus appreciate. Yet, only when their overpopulations are greatly reduced in number by responsible owners consistently spaying/neutering their felines, might these beautiful animals’ soothing, if not therapeutic, presence be truly appreciated rather than taken for granted or even resented. Also, I’ve found over decades that with our four-legged friends there’s a beautiful absence of some undesirable and distinctly human traits. Along with human intelligence comes the proportionate reprehensible potential for evil behavior, i.e. malice for malice’s sake. While animals can react violently, it is typically due to reactive distrust thus dislike. But leave it to humans to commit a spiteful act, if only because we can. Priceless yet misunderstood, prejudged and unjustly despised animals, cats are.
Gertrude obviously knows how to train a soft can-opener.
May Getrude bless your days with happiness, joy, cuddles, and lots of purrs.
My niece Jami just finished her first year of college and of course having to live in the dorms since she's a freshman. Jami also has horrible anxiety and struggles with insomnia and depression so she brought her ESA cat with her. My Sister and BIL adopted Jax before Jami started high school because she was struggling to cope and her therapist thought that it would be a good idea for her to have a support animal and Jami always wanted a cat of her own. Jax was a hit with her roommates, other students and RA on her floor. That little dude was treated like a King, everyone adored him and she never had a single complaint about him. Jami and Jax are home with her Parent's for the Summer and they are going to get Jami her own apartment when she goes back to school.
Renwick advises owners to establish a routine with their pets from the very beginning. This helps them thrive, as they adjust to their new home environment.
“You want to go at your pet’s pace with everything, some pets are naturally very affectionate, whereas others enjoy their own space more, so follow what your new pet is showing you. Let them come to you for snuggles if that's what they choose while making sure they have their very own ‘safe space’ where they can relax and snooze undisturbed. This might be an open crate with lots of comfortable bedding in a quiet place for a dog and a comfortable shelf up high for a cat. Patience is key, and a bond will gradually form between yourself and your new pet as you spend every day of your new lives together!” the PDSA Vet Nurse said.
She also warned that during the settling-in process, owners shouldn’t leave their pets alone in their new home for long periods of time. “It might be a strange and scary environment for them, and having your presence, even just in another room might help them feel a bit more secure,” she said.
Adjusting To A New Home
Adjusting? Look at the look in pupper's eyes. Pupper loves you already and knows they are home forever :)
I picked a shelter that had 3 dogs I was interested in and went home with a different dog because this dog ignored everyone but when I walked up he came right up and rolled over to get belly rubs. I knew then that we were meant to be.

A Homeless Dog Gave Birth In My Compound. I Will Adopt All Of Them
Pardon my preaching, but I hope you plan to have the mother spayed.
Load More Replies...Don't know where you're located, but in the US at least, saying you live in a "compound" is usually a bad idea. Good on you for adopting the pups, though.
Rescue centers typically give owners lots of advice on helping them settle in. Meanwhile, don’t be shy to ask for advice from your vet or vet nurse. There are lots of people out there willing to help you out, all you need to do is ask.
“Remember to make sure you’re getting your pet from a reputable source and do lots of research before you commit to adopting a new pet.”

Meet Boaty! (15)
I realize I haven’t posted on this subreddit yet. This is our adopted senior boy, his name is Boaty. His owner was an older lady and she sadly passed away, which resulted in her son taking Boaty and immediately bringing him to a shelter to surrender him and suggested they euthanize him because “he’s failing.” (how can people be so mean?!) The shelter was like “… no well just keep him here thanks.” Boaty is in good health, he just has a IBS and hyperthyroidism, which is really easy to take care of. He’s the sweetest boy. He takes lots of naps and loves to cuddle, he even gets along with our other cat. His favorite thing rn is supervised sunshine time lol.
I am so glad they didn't listen to that butt hole and didn't put him down. He's a sweetie.
Yes! And (speaking from experience here, lol) hyperthyroidism is one of the EASIEST conditions to manage in a senior kitty. My old gray girl needed a half-tablet of methimazole per day, easily snarfed up in pill pockets (AND they make a cream version of methimazole that you can apply to kitty's ears, even EASIER!) She had IBS towards the end as well - also easily manageable with a change in diet (and perhaps lactulose or Miralax if it is the constipation version of IBS.) I used to mix a 1/8 tsp of Miralax into Wintressia's wet food per day. Easy peasy. Son is a d-bag.
Load More Replies...Boaty fired the son and hired new soft can-openers. Very wise.
That's how we got one of our cats. Her elderly owner passed away and they unceremoniously dumped her at the vet. No one in the family would take her. She loves nuggling has the biggest personality and basically runs that house. Even the 70lbs. German Shepherd defers to her. She's also amazingly smart. Like scary smart. I love the heck out of the little terrorist.
The Shelter Animals Count database shows that around 6.5 million cats and dogs entered shelters and rescues across the United States in 2023. 3.3 million of these animals in need were cats while 3.2 million were dogs.
This is 0.2% more animals entering ‘the system’ compared to 2022 and 4% more than 2021.
Something else to keep in mind is that the number of animals entering American shelters and rescues last year was 3.2% lower compared to 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
This amounts to around 214,000 fewer animals. Of the 6.5 million animals that entered shelters in 2023, the majority—4.8 million—were adopted into loving, caring homes. Of those, 2.6 million were cats while 2.2 million were dogs.
Rescued And Fostered These Guys At 2 Weeks Old. They Just Got Adopted Today. I’m So Happy & Sad At The Same Time
I know it's wonderful when they find their forever home, but we fosters do fall in love and its difficult sometimes
I think I would be a foster fail every time. Glad you found someone to take both.
Of course it's hard to let go but you are a very important part of the adoption process. Just think about how well adjusted they will be by the time they settle in to their new home.
My Bb Dexter 🥹🐾❤️
Adopted this Dalmatian / Cockapoo cutie from Warrior Dog Rescue in Minnesota. Absolutely in love!
When I see "cockapoo" I think "bird". It was quite the mental picture.
I don't see the cockapoo part, my guess would have been Dalmation and Jack Russell Terrier. But who cares? He is adorable. Fellow Minnesotan.
Just Adopted A Calico
According to the Shelter Animals Count, the combined species adoption rate in 2023 was 61%, compared to 56% back in 2019.
However, there are some nuances. Broadly speaking, dogs are having a much tougher time getting rescued than cats. At least in the US.
For instance, 109,000 more dogs were adopted in the US in 2023 than in 2022, but this was still 108,000 fewer canine adoptions than in 2019.
Meanwhile, 34,000 more cats found new forever homes in 2023 than in 2022, and a whopping 319,000 more than in 2019.
After Almost 10 Years Without A Dog We Just Adopted This Angel
I feel you XD When I lost my heart-dog in 2010, a German Shepherd named Ember, I thought I'd get another dog immediately (after a bit of grieving, of course.) But it was nearly 12 years later before I got another dog (in 2022, a GSD mix - then I got another doggo, a Belgian Malinois puppy, 8 months ago!) I'll never go 12 years without a dog again. I had my cats after Ember died, and I love(d) them dearly, but I missed having a dog.
Load More Replies...I’ve been very fortunate to always be in a position to have pets. I really don’t think I could live without them. Exist maybe, but that’s no quality of life for me. My First Fosters!

There are over 14,400 organizations that shelter animals in the United States. Over 9,500 of these are rescues (i.e., organizations that do not have a government contract) while more than 4,900 are shelters (i.e., government animal services with and without government contracts).
However, even with so many organizations ready and willing to help, many are dealing with a capacity crisis.
Even though there are many kindhearted people who open up their homes to rescue animals, the reality is that there simply needs to be many more.
Not only to give the animals another shot at happiness, but also to prevent them from being put to sleep.
35 Year Old Named Paris!
I just wanted to introduce this sub to my newly adopted 35 year old Blue Fronted Amazon, Paris. Apparently his owner only has a couple of months to live and he was being fostered. Poor guy. I have an African grey already. They’re checking each other out from a distance! Any advice or tips anyone has would be appreciated. This is my first time really with two very intelligent parrots!
I don't have much experience with parrots, but what little I do have suggests playing them music and language tapes all the time. It engages and calms them, and also gives them a mutual foundation to communicate with each other which is apparently very important.
This is truly a commitment and thank you for taking him in. Let them get used to one another from afar and see how it shakes out.
The closed leg band says that he was born in captivity. The feather and beak condition tells the story of a poor diet, and lack of sunlight and probably poor air quality. He may have liver and kidney problems or even cancer. Someone has failed this beautiful boy terribly and he’ll die decades before his due time. The best news though is that he’s got his forever home. 💚💛💙❤️💔
Aww... I love those parrots! the only reason I wouldn't adopt one is because I would spend the rest of my life taking care of an extremely high maintence pet
Dang! That’s going to be a handful! I’m so happy he’s getting a good home 🩷
you'll need to provide them a LOT of entertainment and things to do - they need constant stimulation to keep their brains busy. KUDOS on the rescue too!

177,000 more dogs and cats found themselves ‘stuck’ in the American sheltering system in 2023 compared to 2022.
Meanwhile, a jaw-dropping 900,000 more animals have entered and lingered in the system since January 2021. In short, there are hundreds of thousands of pets who would love nothing more than a new home.

Just adopted this sweet little girl yesterday from a foster animal rescue. She’s about 2.5 months old. Very playful and full of energy. She joins my 4 year old male cat. Looking forward to giving her a fun, safe, and happy life!

It’s mainly dogs that are affected. 24% more dogs were put to sleep in 2023 compared to 2022, 64% more than in 2021, and 12% more than in 2019. Meanwhile, 8% more cats were euthanized in 2023 than in 2022, 3% more than in 2021, but 31% fewer than in 2019.

Kiara, Our Newly-Adopted German Shepherd/Border Collie. She Is So Sweet And Has Adjusted Super Well To Our Home. She's Just A Fantastic Dog
I was admiring the dogs neckerchief and didn't even see the other dog
Load More Replies...from experience, German Shepherds are the best bois, ours is 10 years old now and he can be very playful, just don't interrupt them eating, my ankle payed that price- don't worry though, only aggressive if trained to other then eating he's like a big friendly bear
I had a GSD years ago and I have a GSD mix now. Neither of them were/are food-aggressive. That's not a GSD breed trait, that is an individual dog trait. And it can often be trained out in puppyhood (or afterwards) with gentle training and patience. If your dog bites you if you interrupt them while they are eating, that is a serious behavioral issue that should not be accepted as "normal".
Load More Replies...a very busy dog I suspect.. needs a lot of exercise and puzzles to keep that brain busy too
Hello
The Guardian points out that the situation with pet adoptions and animals stuck in the shelter system is nuanced and complicated. You’re not just seeing employees adopting ‘pandemic puppies’ because they were 'bored' that they then gave up after the restrictions ended.
In many cases, the owners want to keep their pets, but can’t due to how expensive it is to care for them properly. It’s not just rising vet costs that you have to keep in mind, but also price increases and fewer tax breaks in other areas of people’s lives, too.
Y'all I Think I Just Got Adopted By A Cat
Meet Stormy!
Today I adopted a female birb named Stormy. She was found on a stormy day in someone’s back yard, which is how she got her name. So far she is very calm, but I can tell she is nervous from being in a new environment. I’m glad that Spike was being so nice and gentle with her though. Anyone have any advice or tips for helping a new additional bird feel more comfortable? Thank you!
Cockatiel dad for 35 years here. Mine are so spoiled that they have their own room. Short of that, they need to fly regularly in a contained area (NOT the kitchen). Spotty and Cutesy get mixed greens daily. 'tiels need to chew; I tape playing cards to the wall where they can get to them. Whistle to your new best friend. If you get a response, they're happy. For awhile, he/she could use a lot of attention ... just working or surfing Bored Panda in the same room will do. I offer them a daily "buffet" of mixed nuts, shelled sunflower seeds, Special K cereal, and La Choy crunchy noodles. My brats think I'm the papa bird and prefer to feed from me directly, although some would take issue with that practice. They can learn words by repetition; "peek-a-boo" is what they say in the morning. I cover their cage at night with towels but leave a space open for a night light (not too bright). Eventually, you might consider another 'tiel for him/her for a mate. Best wishes, Stormy.
That was fantastically detailed! Thanks for the info!
Load More Replies...That’s so sweet 🩷 A good way to help a bird feel more comfortable in a new environment, is to give them lots of treats. Dried fruit, millet and sunflower seeds are all good options, and they’re good for your bird. I know mine goes crazy for some dried fruit lol
That there are birb companions will help her adjust. Don't keep birbs alone, they need their birb people.
Are the feathers up because stormy is nervous or do they stay up like that normally. I don't know anything about birds
She's going to be trouble once she's comfy. She's already got the innocent look down pat.

Literal Friday Cat! What Would You Do For Mr. Handsome Eyebrows??
We got this micro kittah 2 days ago. They say Fuzzball is 8 weeks...but Oldman Eyebrows still kinda crawls and slinks away. Swirly-fur Void will eat out of our hands but basically trembles unless he's wrapped up in a blanky.
Beautifull eyebrows! Give the kittah a few days and you will see. You will see. Ah ah ah ah ah!!!
Yeah, just let him adjust in his own time. Be available for cuddles when he's ready, but don't try to force it. Once he realizes he's safe and loved, he might just turn into a velcro cat---which tbh, ain't really such a bad thing after all.

Meet Little Miss Star!!!
My dog Stilgar LOVES to wear clothes/costumes. We dressed him in sweaters for warmth when he was sick as a puppy (distemper) but he learned VERY early on that he got extra attention and "squee"-ing from humans when he had clothing on. Now he won't go on a walk unless he's wearing his baseball cap XD He waits until I bring it down from its hook and then he will literally shove his head/face into it. So I understand that you have your opinion on clothed doggies, SOME dogs do enjoy it and it's not always torturous for them :) I also had an old gray kitty who enjoyed wearing clothing and costumes! We used photos of her in our advertisements for my family's business for decades XD stillyhat-...b18801.jpg

But just know that some people will misspell it as Nocky. Fig, or Figgy, is cute.

Foster dog is getting adopted today. Nice adopter, and he’ll have his own yard. I’m gonna miss him though. If I was in a position to, I would without regrets foster fail.

What Kind Of Doggie Is This?
My New Tiel
I just adopted him yesterday. His name is Wembley, and I got him for a companion for my first tiel Mokey. We’re still in quarantine in separate parts of the room, but Mokey (my first bird) is very social and is very fascinated by his new brother, so I’ve been trying to keep him from getting too close yet. Wembley’s only 2 months old, newly weaned, and seems curious about Mokey in return. It looks like they’re already gonna be besties!
Such a beautiful birb! No wonder your current birby already loves him. Beautiful and social, quite a combination.
I love his pearls! He's got that classic cockatiel suspicious look down perfectly lol
Adopted A Birdie !!
That is a fledgeling that fell from its nest. Very difficult to raise and potential conflict with the Wild Animal Act - unless OP is an experienced shelter
From Reddit: Hey guys, meet gyro (he/she/they/them/idk) I adopted gyro yesterday, he was abandoned in my parking lot somewhere in some corner and there were no nests nearby so I have no idea how gyro came there. There's a black cat which roams in that parking so i thought I'll just bring gyro home. So anyone who has a prior expirience here can give me some tips/info? The specs of gyro are as follows: Size: 2 inches (approx.) Beak: Black coloured Sound: idk squeaky aah Feathers: brown-black ish Do let me know if there is any good vet who knows how to check birds in kharadi area. (Since the last guy I called had no idea about birds)
Hello All
So the pigeon gods have bestowed upon me a young pigeon. I haven’t owned a pigeon previously but I had an ex that had two and I loved them. I definitely want to keep this pigeon as it just dropped from a tree in my backyard and can’t fly, I have it in a box and it let me pet me and seems to respond well. If anyone could please offer insight besides “take it to a shelter” that would be great because I will not be doing that.

All of my kitties have been rescues/adopted. Just adopted a 12yo orange menace named Puffer. I call him Cheesy Poof. He loves to hug me like a baby and claw my hair. >^._.^<
A lot of people have told me that rescues make the best pets. Ragamuffin, whom I have mentioned in a number of comments, was a rescue right off the street.

Only when their (over)populations are greatly reduced in number by responsible owners consistently spaying/neutering their felines, might these beautiful animals’ soothing, if not therapeutic, presence be truly appreciated rather than taken for granted or even resented. I grew up around cats and developed a life-long appreciation and affection for them. I’ve also found that, along with individual people, collective society can be callously cruel towards feral and stray/homeless cats. It’s incredibly sad when they have no warm home, especially if it’s due to abandonment. Very many people with cats experience the emotional benefits of their presence. Of course, those qualities, especially an un-humanly innocence, makes losing that pet one day such a heartbreaking experience. Cats have a beneficial influence over humanity that many people still cannot fathom; and their precious positive effect on their human hosts can also be beneficial to the pets themselves.
.... Along with individual people, society collectively can also be cruel toward felines. In Surrey, B.C., there was an estimated 36,000 feral/homeless cats, very many of which suffer severe malnourishment, debilitating injury and/or infection. That number was about six years ago. I was informed four years later by the local cat charity that, if anything, their “numbers would have increased, not decreased” since then. Yet that municipal government, as well as some aware yet uncaring residents, did little or nothing to help with the local non-profit trap/neuter/release program, regardless of its (and others’) documented success in reducing the needlessly great suffering. The Surrey Community Cat Foundation’s TNR program is/was the only charity to which I’ve ever donated, in no small part because of the plentiful human callousness towards the plight of those cats and the countless others elsewhere.
