Is there anything more wholesome than adopting a pet? When you adopt, you’re quite literally saving a life.
According to Best Friends data, more than 1,000 dogs and cats die every day simply because they don’t have a safe place to call home.
“This is solvable if just 6% more people who are looking to add a pet to their family would choose to adopt rather than purchase a pet from a breeder or pet store,” says Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society.

Adopted Dog From Shelter. Don’t Know What Breed
While every pet deserves a loving home, the reality is that the older they get, the less likely they are to be adopted. Senior dogs, for example, have an adoption rate of just 25%, compared to 60% for younger dogs and puppies.

It’s understandable why many people prefer a kitten or puppy—they’re tiny, likely to be with you longer, and you get to build a bond from their early days.
But older pets are just as ready to be your loyal companion, and there are plenty of reasons why adopting one can be an amazing experience, according to the Animal Humane Society.

For starters, senior pets often have lower energy levels than their younger counterparts. While this might sound like a downside, it can actually be a benefit for many owners. Puppies and kittens come with a fair share of mischief as they grow and learn how to live in a home, while many older pets are calmer and easier to care for.

That doesn’t mean older animals lack energy altogether. In fact, they often offer the perfect mix of calm and playfulness. Many senior cats and dogs still love to play and engage with you, while also enjoying a relaxed lifestyle that fits seamlessly into your routine.

Another benefit of adopting an older pet is that their size and personality are already developed. You can see exactly what you’re getting, making it easier to know if they’ll be a good fit for your home and lifestyle.
However, it’s important to remember that every pet, no matter their age, needs time to adjust to a new environment. It may take weeks or even months for them to fully open up and show their true personality once they feel safe in your home.
And while senior pets have personalities of their own, don’t forget: You can still teach an old dog new tricks.

My Foster Pitty Has Become BFF With My Beagle… It’s The Sweetest Thing
You might wonder how to tell when an animal is considered a senior. It can vary depending on the breed and size of the pet.
Generally, smaller dogs live longer than larger ones, and cats tend to have longer lifespans than most dogs. While aging looks different for every pet, senior animals often need more frequent vet checkups to monitor age-related health concerns.
Here’s a general guide:
- Small breed dogs: 10 years
- Large breed dogs: 8 years
- Extra-large breed dogs: 6 years
- Cats: 10-12 years

All animals need love. Older pets may not have as many years ahead, but adopting them means giving them the chance to spend that time surrounded by care, comfort, and joy.
They thrive on walks, playtime, cozy naps, and all the cuddles they can get. So if you’re thinking about adopting, consider welcoming a senior pet into your life—you might just find the sweetest best friend.

New Family Member After Tragedy
Sadly this kitten didn't make it, but OP said "We tried to rescue a kitten that had been rejected my it’s mother last weekend (first pic). Unfortunately, kitty was too sick and too weak and her little body couldn’t handle all of the treatments she needed. She unfortunately passed on last Wednesday morning. While sad, this story has a happy ending.
Our kids got attached to said kitty and were convinced that the doctor was going to make her better. Enter: Lollipop. The children were convinced that this was their kitty and the doctor made her all better. (Which is significantly easier than explaining we weren’t bringing kitty home)." new-family...ac6111.jpg

New Livestock Guardian Dog Owner
Oh, good luck, my friend, haha! XD My dog Stilgar is half livestock guardian dog (Kuchi Dog) and WOW I was not ready for a LGD breed! They are independent, stubborn, WAY too smart for their own good, and while they are extremely loyal and loving, they aren't "velcro dogs" and sometimes can seem almost standoffish. They NEED training and structure, or they just straight up won't listen to you unless they want to. They want to "do their job", which is instinctive to them - guard the herd (even if that just means you!) and patrol their "territory" (even if that's just the backyard.) They are wonderful dogs and will defend you with their very life, but if you want JUST a cuddlebug, don't opt for a livestock guardian breed XD And make sure you can give it a "job", even if it's just nice long walks to "patrol the area"! It looks like OP adopted this pup to guard their cows and goats, so that's good - but definitely do your research if you want to adopt a LGD!

I used to want a Scottish Fold very badly when I was a child. When I got older, I learned that the mutation that causes the folded ears is a form of osteochondrodysplasia. So ALL Folds have osteochondrodysplasia, which is a skeletal deformity. They can develop severe painful degenerative joint diseases at an early age. They're also very prone to polycystic kidney disease. *ALL* Scottish Folds *WILL* develop arthritis. It is a breed that should be phased out; many countries have already banned the breeding of Folds because of their numerous health problems and the pain and agony the cats suffer due to them.

My 2 Adopted Boys!!
So... someone is out there crossing a cat with a severe skeletal deformity mutation (Munchkins, who all have osteochondrodysplasia and are prone to lordosis, pectus excavatum, and severe osteoarthritis) with a cat that has an extreme skin mutation (Sphynx cats, who are prone to skin cancer, feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and can have one of the shortest average lifespans of all cat breeds.) That is actually abhorrent. It's not bad enough to purposefully breed for one painful deformation, but now we're crossing TWO together? Sphynxes aren't as bad off as Munchkins are, healthwise, but cripes!
You are right - this is "Qualzucht" - toture breeding.
Load More Replies...There's nothing like the love an adopted pet gives. I have 3 dachshunds, Jasper is adopted. I did have Otto too. A very troubled boy initially but transformed into a smashing boy. RIP lovely Otto 2014-2025. Miss you darling boy.
I believe you just lost him a few weeks ago, didn't you? So sorry for your loss.
Load More Replies...So these are my two "June Edition" adoptions.... XD I already have three kittens (two siblings I adopted in December and a singleton I adopted in January; they're 9 and 8 months old now, respectively.) However, one night when I let my cat-loving Belgian Malinois, Fenring, out to go to the bathroom, he found these two tiny stray kitten siblings in the backyard hiding under a table. I already have a soft spot for tuxedos (my favorite cat coat pattern) and I've never had a Standard Issue Cat before, so there was no question in my mind of taking them to a shelter/rescue... they were mine forever; the Cat Distribution System brought them right to me, knowing that I already had tons of kitten food in stock, haha XD The tabby is a boy and the tux is a girl! joseph_and...3944a0.jpg
Forgot to mention! The tabby's name is Joseph after my favorite musical when I was a child (Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.) When I was around 9-10, my parents had a family business and the office had a population of stray-ish cats in the parking lot. My parents said I could keep my favorite one (a tiny brown tabby I'd named Joseph) if I could catch him. The next day when I went to the office after school, I saw Joseph deceased under a car :( So this is that Joseph's spiritual successor! :D The tux is named Spicecake/Spicy because she was very hissy and growly at me for like a week (now she starts purring as I approach, before I even start to pet her!) I think it's a great name, so I'm leaving it, even though she isn't a spicy kitten at all any more XD EDIT: a few weeks after the stray Joseph died, I rode my bike to a pet store myself (this was in the 90s when pet stores still sold pets, sadly) and bought a tuxedo kitten. Yes, the pet store employee didn't even question a 9-year-old without parents in sight buying a kitten and sold him to me XD So my first cat was a tuxedo and I've loved them ever since! His name was (eventually) Kazarothien James-Joseph Skandranon Rashkae Sheean III, called "Kaz" for short. Hey, I was 9... XD
Load More Replies...We adopted our cat from the local shelter. We named her Stoli, like the vodka, because she is intoxicating. She has done nothing but bring love and pure joy into our life.
We are 4 weeks into adopting a 10 year old kitty who lost his owner 7 months ago. He had been in a foster home until he joined out family. He's shy and we were told it would take some time for him to warm up; just this week he started to sleep on our bed so I think he's going to be okay. I'm sure he's confused and wondering what happened to his first family.
Submitted for your approval Lizzy AKA the noodle, shortly after we 'rescued' her.
