Black cats are thought to bring bad luck—but we think they’re absolutely adorable, ultra pettable, and cuddletastic. Not to mention utterly magnificent and, really, just tinier versions of noble panthers. That’s why Bored Panda compiled this mega-awesome super-duper massively-fluffy list of the cutest and funniest pictures of black cats.
There are plenty of superstitions surrounding black cats. Sadly, some of them are negative. For instance, in the Middle Ages, cats were thought to have a close link to black magic and witchcraft. In fact, these adorable cats were thought to be witches in disguise! This led to a lot of kitties ending up hurt as they were punished alongside witches in 13th century Europe and 17th century Massachusetts. Nowadays, black cats are still sometimes seen as symbols of the mystical. And what Halloween party is complete without someone dressing up as a cute cat or putting up a prop of a feline in a witch’s hat?

The other major superstition associates black cats with bad luck and, by extension, death. Once again, this belief has its roots in the Middle ages when it was thought that not only dark cat fur colors but any dark colored animals were linked with death.
In 16th-century Italy, for example, if a black cat were to lie down on someone’s sickbed, it was thought that death (or rather Death with a capital “D”) was about to pay them a visit.

In modern times, some of us still hang onto the belief that if a black cat crosses your path, you’ll be in for some bad luck. Similarly, a white cat crossing your path is said to bring good luck. But do you know what we think? We believe that a cute cat crossing your path is definitely great luck.
When we take a closer look at different cultures, we realize that they have different understandings of what encountering a black cat means. For instance, in ancient Egypt, darker cat colors were considered good luck, protected you from disease, and gave a boost to your fertility.

Meanwhile, in Japan, spotting a black cat means that you’ll have luck finding love. While seeing a cat on your porch or in your doorway implies that you’ll be prosperous soon. Similarly, in France, seeing a black cat meant that something magical was about to happen.
It’s great to know that not all superstitions are stereotypically negative. Especially considering how many black cats we’ve crammed into this list!

My 2nd black cat Bogart (RIP) hated dogs with a fiery passion. No idea why - I got him from the ASPCA when he was a year old. He was huge and weighed ~ 30 pounds; the vet said his healthier weight would still be 20 pounds. Laziest cat ever, but he terrorized every dog that dared enter our building, big or small. We had to stop leaving our loft door open to the hallway in summer. He once went after a pit bull just walking down the street at a full run and I had to chase and catch him. I miss that old bugger.

Took my Void to the vet extremely worried he had a terminal illness because he was not eating, drinking or moving much. Turns out he just didn't like the food we gave him. He has no regrets

I have a black cat and all it does is bring joy to the family the may say there bad luck but there not they may be a cat and knock over a few things but that’s a cat so I think all cats are good and a black cat us the cherry on top to the cat family.

Black cats rule! It's only in America that black cats are considered bad luck. Over here on the other side of the Atlantic, they were always considered good luck. But perhaps it's best not to determine one's future by the colour of a cat! :-D

While I was reading these, my cat tried to jump onto a stack of books on a stool, missed, fell in a graceless heap, popped up, looked around to see if anyone noticed, then tried to casually walk it off. While I was typing, he tried again, made it this time, then proceeded to knock the books off the stool, one by one, in spiteful cat fashion.
