He was probably at Julliard at the time with Christopher Reeves. I miss that mad man.
Cool Old School and Cool Past Pics have both been around the block for a while. They’re not as old as the photos they share, of course, but they both launched on Twitter in 2013. Since then, each page has amassed about 100k followers and shared over 1,000 tweets. From featuring photos of celebrities in their youth to snapshots of cultural events that rocked the world, these accounts are always entertaining.
From perusing the pictures on this list, you might learn more about your favorite film, what it would have been like to be in high school at the same time as your parents, or what you would have worn if you lived in New York City 50 years ago. Although times change rapidly, these photos are great reminders that people are just, well, people. We go to the same places today, and we enjoy the same activities, like attending music festivals and grabbing a meal with our friends. So enjoy the nostalgia of these pics, and put on some tunes from your favorite decade to really set the mood.
Aw, I miss her so much! I bet she's glad she's back with Allen and not having to deal with all that's going on around the world.
From mymodernmet.com: The first branding for Paramount was created in 1914. It featured the name Paramount in Excelsis with a crown of stars and a mountain. According to legend, the mountain was based on a drawing made by co-founder William Wadsworth (W.W.) Hodkinson that's inspired by memories of his childhood spent in Utah. These two elements are enduring parts of the logo that have been recreated throughout the years. Fine art, particularly painting, can be a way to inspire changes in branding. This happened with Paramount in 1986 thanks to artist Dario Campanile. The company commissioned a painting (in 1986) of the majestic mountain—known as “the mountain of dreams”—for their 75th anniversary in 1987. A striking image, it features a white-capped peak with crystal-clear waters below.
Came here to say this. It was supposedly based off of Ben Lomond mountain in Ogden, Utah.
Load More Replies...To gain some insight from an expert on vintage pics, we reached out to Maureen Taylor, the Photo Detective. Maureen specializes in helping clients understand their family history and themselves through investigating old photos they bring her. “I start by studying clues within a picture — a hairstyle, a sign in the background, or the shape of a shirtsleeve — in order to identify a person, place or era,” Maureen writes on her website.
“What follows from my genealogical expertise is uncovering the story behind the images of the past. That could mean shedding light on how those pictures fit into your family tale. Or discovering the history of the area in which those people lived — even if that’s locally in my small state of Rhode Island or around the world in Australia.”
This is a famous photo.its the liberation of Buchenwald. The prisoner is pointing out a particularly cruel guard to the allies for further action by a court. Photo by Harold M. Roberts, April 14, 1945
The guard has that “oh s**t” look on his face. He knows it’s time to lay the piper. With his life.
Load More Replies...I'm not sure what that look on the guard's face is, but I hope it's at least partly shame. I hope there was some guilt and remorse for his actions, not just the fear of the consequences he had earned.
I think they must have managed to deeply suppress any such feelings, just in order to remain sane. They'd allowed themselves to believe they were doing nothing wrong, so guilt or shame would not be part of their reaction.
Load More Replies...Is there another former guard hiding behind the man dressed in black (with his back to the camera)?
I'll bet that if the prisoners weren't so weak and malnourished, they wouldn't just be pointing and having words.
Correct. In some camps the prisoners quickly took revenge. In fact in a handful of camps the prisoners revolted before the allies arrived, which is astonishing. The 2 most famous examples are Sobibor where there was a mass breakout and Auschwitz where some of the sonderkommando smuggled in dynamite and rifles and destroyed a crematorium and got in to a shooting fight with guards.
Load More Replies...What an evil time! I don't understand how people were able to treat others the way they did.
Time isn't evil, people are evil and they didn't change.

Define "prehistoric"? the first sunglasses were invented in the 12th century by the Chinese. They were a crude slab of smoked quartz.
There is no human perfection, but a surprisingly large number of us are willing to die impersonating it.
Load More Replies...She doesn't look very special at all here. So normal. So unlike the blonde bombshell image we are used to seeing. I'm not saying she isn't pretty because she is, just that she looks totally different "off duty"
She wasn't special - she was a regular (smart?) girl with curves and armpit hair. IIt's mostly her attitude/spirit that made her stand out.
Load More Replies...With digital editing that photo would look very different today. It's hard to even call today's photos that. They're a little bit of photo and a lot of digital art and AI generated image effects.
From The The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes movie. It's a tragic ending of a big star.
A romantic notion, but quite untrue. Women are oppressed and exploited all over the world. Beautiful, not so beautiful (but beautiful inside), old, young, courageous, scared.
Load More Replies...First, we wanted to know what inspired Maureen to become a photo detective and expert on vintage photographs. “I worked for a historical society and while folks came in to look at books about their family history, hardly anyone asked if there were photos,” Maureen told Bored Panda. “It surprised me. It’s true that every photo tells a story.”
“Some are amazing tales like the ones on Cool Old School, and some represent more mundane moments (for instance, the sitter bought a new hat),” she explained. “All photos capture a moment in time—what were the people thinking, why did they have a picture taken, and how do those images fit into the historical context of the times. The details add up to fill us in and the lives of the individuals help fill out the story.”
Patti McGee is still alive at 77! I couldn't find if she's still skateboarding, though
Were skateboards smaller back then? Or was this costume-made? (Or even yet, is it the photo that makes the board look smaller?)
There were very small and narrow boards, sort of like a Bart Simpson skateboard

We also asked Maureen why it’s important for us to hold onto old photos and keep viewing pictures from the past. “So much of history isn’t written down,” she told Bored Panda. “I see it in client photos. For instance, obsolete technology and businesses that barely left a mark. But the people and places in those images existed. They lived everyday just like we do. The photos might represent an important moment in their lives such as a wedding, or a baby that didn’t live to beyond infancy.”
“To truly understand the past, we have to talk with people about their lives and study the historical record, BUT also look at the photos and movies, because local, national, international and family history is in the tiniest details depicted,” Maureen says. “Each photo is a mystery to be solved.”

We also asked Maureen what we can learn from these vintage photographs. “Photos show us how we lived and loved,” she said. “They depict past generations by illustrating what was important to a person from fashion to friends. I believe each image is a time portal, a freeze frame of the past, a moment worth savoring. It captures a second that won’t happen again. Looking at pictures triggers memories, not just about the time captured by the shutter. There are related memories as well.”
“When I showed my mother a picture of her with her siblings when she was five, I was seeking answers to why and where they posed,” Maureen explained. “Instead, she shared a story about the first day of school and how her eldest sister bought her new clothes. Think about what you feel when you look at an image. They often leave us with a sense of nostalgia and longing for what came before. It’s our connection to the days we lived or those lived by our ancestors. Save them or lose a piece of the past that might not be recoverable.”

I saw an interview once where Kenny Baker (the actor inside R2) said they'd sometimes break for lunch, and they'd forget he was in there!
Ignore Righteous Fartbox, he’s full of hot air!
Load More Replies...Yep!! In the original trilogy they had Kenny Baker, the guy pictured above, inside Artoo. Baker controlled pretty much everything, the shuffling around, the head rotating, stuff like that. And then in the prequel movies they just made a remote controlled R2-D2, and that's how he's been done since then.
Load More Replies...I have been a Star Wars fanatic since the 70's. However it was just this year that I discovered there was an actual person inside R2D2!! Poor guy must have been seriously uncomfortable. Yes, I know he's a dwarf - but that still seems very claustrophobic to me.
He had pretty unconventional taste in footwear. I've noticed that in other pictures of him. He seemed to not like socks. He often wears maryjane style shoes. There's even a picture of him in sandals that look like they were likely made for women. Some of his clothing, too, was pretty unusual for his time. He was a guy comfortable with dancing to his own beat, it seems. Another thing to admire about him.
Finally, Maureen added that she “never met a photo that [she] didn’t want to know more about”. If you’re interested in consulting Maureen about a photo of your own or you’d like to hear more about her process, be sure to check out her website right here. Thomas Jefferson died in 1826, when Longstreet was 5. There are millions of Americans today who were alive when Helen Longstreet died. In principle, her husband could have met Jefferson (there’s absolutely no evidence that he did). Truly, we are a young country.
Guy sitting is pointing out the spot where he shot someone and the guy standing is still traumatized.
Guy on the right definitely is a confederate veteran, Guy on the left could be both. Veterans from opposite sides were known to become buddies with each other, if you’ve seen other photos of the reunions.

It is nice to survivors, for a change. So many of the Civil War photos are of too many dead men lying across bloody fields.
The Afro hairdos were huge! What you see in movies of the era is how it looked on the streets. The older generation didn't grow their hair out so big, but the younger kids sure did. The couple shown here looks pretty average.

We also reached out to photographer, vintage enthusiast and the man behind Vintage and Vogue Photography, Mark Bilash, to hear his thoughts on the topic. But first, we wanted to hear what inspired Mark to pursue a career in photography. "As a young boy I was fascinated with how you could 'freeze a moment in time' with a photograph," he told Bored Panda. "From there I began to love the creative aspect of lighting, to set a mood or tone in photography. I can’t play an instrument, sing, or paint – so this was my creative outlet."
We also asked Mark about his personal style of photography. "I love the style, fashion and appearance from the 1920s to the 1960s," he shared. "This led me to specialize in creating images that have that same look and feel from these decades. Classic Hollywood, Pinup, and Film Noir are some of my favorites genres from these decades. If I’m shooting a modern session, I do like to add a 'vintage flair' to it with possible props or an editing style."
“Although this photograph is displayed in black-and-white and therefore looks fairly “old” to modern eyes, it was actually taken in 1987, when an estimated 300,000 people swarmed the bridge during its golden anniversary celebration.” https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/golden-gate-bridge-opening/ (I was there in 1987 and it was a crazy insane time, with SO much going on!)
I was there too! We only made it to mid-span and were made to turn around. I still have the cancelled commemorative post card from that day :)
Load More Replies...It was actually a strength test for the span. The story goes it was so much weight it flattened out the middle. It was at least ten times the weight even todays traffic puts on the suspension.
I was there that day and it did flatten out! The motion on the bridge was so unnerving that numerous people got motion sickness and 🤢🤮
Load More Replies...The authorities repeated this on the 50th birthday of the bridge. All of my friends went. I told them that they must be out of their minds. Incidentally, the weight of the people did, in fact, not only flattened the curve of the bridge, but actually made it sag.

When it comes to what Mark loves most about vintage photos, he told Bored Panda, "Seeing a true vintage photo just draws me into a time and place that is so different from now. The buildings, the fashion, the cars, and the hairstyles are all 'eye candy' for me."
"For example: A basic photo of a parking lot full of cars from 1950, is like a work of art," Mark shared. "Every vehicle has such stunning style as opposed to nowadays. Plus it is always a bit of a history lesson. Seeing what once was and how things have changed over time. The craftsmanship of yesteryears compared to the cost-cutting of today. That is why I love creating Vintage Styled images. Having people dress in an era of spectacular fashion and stunning hairstyles is always such a rush. Also makes people appreciate the past."

The four in a row getting "knocked out." Left to right: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. They originally wanted to be photographed with Sonny Liston, who was expected to beat Cassius Clay [Ali- he hadn't yet changed his name]. However, they were stuck with Clay and very unhappy about it. When they met Clay, he told them something along the lunes of, "Hello, Beatles! Let's go make some money." They did whatever he told them to, including lying on the floor and chorusing, "You are!" when he asked who was the best. Clay held Ringo in the air, called Paul "pretty boy," etc. Later, he beat Liston, who left the gym in tears, his arm in a sling.

Load More Replies...We also asked Mark why holding onto pictures from the past is important. "Photos not only record a specific moment in time, but many also capture an emotion from that moment," he explained. "Since we can’t time travel yet, this is the best way possible to do so. Looking at an old photo is like peering through a window into the past. It’s also an important record of our history, whether it’s a personal history or more of a general history."
"People do not live forever, but their memories and lives can be preserved through photographs. Instead of just reading about someone or something from the past, a photo gives us a real life personal view of days gone by."
Bringing a bow to a gunfight, all that skill overtaken by technology. But those shoes tho...
Kyū-do, the art of horseback-based archery which then became an art form, a very mindful activity. The bows were designed as such, with more height on top than bottom so as to not get caught while on horseback. It’s still practiced today in Japan as a sports club. Always wanted to find and join such a group here in the USA. From what I have researched (maybe need more??), each step in kyū-do has a pause or given it’s time to prep since you want to make a shot mindfully with the arrows…not just shoot all w***y-nilly. It seems like there are a lot of this Buddhist(?) mindfullness in most(if not all) Japanese sports/hobbies(ie. tea ceremony, etc) but I really want to try kyū-do…I like archery. 😂
As in everything Japanese, mindfulness is the key and the ultimate goal.

"My ideal 'dream vacation', would not be to travel to an exotic location. Instead – if it were possible – I would like to travel back in time and visit my locale during the 1920’s – 1950’s," Mark shared with Bored Panda. I remember watching West side story with someone who said they couldn't watch it because they couldn't take gang members doing ballet as they weren't 'tough' enough. Back then it was impossible to get such a shot at such a location, the limits of film sensitivity didn't allow it. And such a shot with flash light doesn't work with a ceiling. It's a perfect picture down to the detail, it's a great work and respect to the whole crew ho did this. But just like many other pictures here it's not a documentation of the past but rather shows the extremely high level of skill and effort that was put into these pictures back then.

This kind of scene happened at all of the studios quite frequently. There is a hilarious story about when Jonathon Winters was on Mork and Mindy with Robin Williams. The story goes that they ate lunch together in the cafeteria and got to improvising (as you can imagine with those two) and just brought down the house with their antics. Everyone took long lunches and few shows were shot on time that day. I wish they had cell phones back then to record that!

Doubtful. The school admins of 1969 would be total pucketbutts and demand she go home and put on a bra & a longer skirt.
I doubt it. I went to school in the 70's and 80's and wore those satin short shorts and tank tops or crop tops to school. It was *much* different back then. We could even smoke in school.

Load More Replies...No, you didn’t. There were still some pretty strict dress codes going on back then, especially concerning mini skirts. Also no pants, much less jeans. When I was in 6th grade, all us girls got together and wore pants on the same day, in protest of the dress code. Our reasoning was that the school didn’t open its doors until close to time for first period, so we had to wait in the playground. Well, our legs totally froze in cold weather, and we wanted to wear pants to stay warm. It worked, btw.
Actually, at my junior high, there were girls who wore ultra miniskirts. There were no pantyhose back then and so we wore fishnet stockings held up by garter belts. Some girls skirts were so short, when they sat down you could see the top of the stockings and the clasp for the garter belt. They wore make up. Some did not wear a bra. No, the school could not enforce a dress code. It was a public school and they were told by the parents that their daughters can dress any way they want to.

Mr. Halloran? What is in room 237? Nothing. There ain’t nothing in room 237. But you ain’t got no business going there in the first place, so stay out, you hear me? STAY OUT.
Left to Right: 1950 Buick, 1952 Chrysler, (I think an English Austin, I'm not sure), (I can't figure this out), 1957 Chevrolet Convertible, 1953 Pontiac (I think), late 1950s Renault Dauphine, 1958 Edsel, early 1950s Austin Princess, 1957 Chevrolet, 1955 Ford
So pretty! In the early 1980s, the only side to see was the Canadian side because the US side was a garbage pit. Trash everywhere and just nasty.
Last time I went to Niagara Falls I was 19 (maybe a few years back) and was with my mum, dad and little sister. We stayed at the Hilton and the reception folk persuaded dad to upgrade our room to one with a jacuzzi bath - seemed like a great idea but clearly this was a honeymoon style room. The massive bath has huge frosted glass panels that you could open up to the whole room - I have never stared at a tv so intensely while I could see dads knocked silhouette through those glass panels getting in the bath. And most certainly didn't lend itself to a few mins privacy to go to the loo knowing the rest of the room could see you, even if it was blurry.....I pooped in the dark. Traumatised I tell thee
All those antique cars would be worth a fortune today if they were still in great condition.
This pic looks like the American Falls... A little further along to the right is where the actual famous Horseshoe Falls is. Just as it sounds it is horse shoe shaped facing down the gorge and stretches to both the Canadian and American sides... And yes the parking spots are most definitely still there!
Those “ape-hanger” handlebars! The sparkly banana seat with the “sissy bar” back! The slick rear tire! It was the mid-life crisis sports car of the teenage set. I wanted one sooooooooo badly!
Load More Replies...And to think, my roommate was reminiscing yesterday with his sister about the banana seats and high handlebars. And to see a picture of it today.
Bikes back when Butterfly handle bars and banana seats were all the rage
What really grabbed me about this picture is the fact that nobody seems to notice the woman on the bike. I think she would have been noticed anywhere else.
What is she wearing on her head? That can't be a swim cap because they had to cover all of your hair.
Had to have extra room for the dresses or were they ‘frocks’ in those days?
My kind of house party is fleece jogger pants and a cozy, fluffy sweatshirt. And also no one is invited except my dog!
The lady in the yellow polka dot dress didn't get the memo about wearing an evening gown.
Thought maybe she was just very conservative but... she's smoking a cigarette!
Load More Replies...Yeah I immediately thought of American Horror Story too!
Load More Replies...And how bout the photographer with the bad toupee captured in the mirror?😝
Gemini IV. He was enjoying it so much he had to be ordered back into the spacecraft.
Can you imagine it? You'd be hard-pressed to get me to come back in, too!
Load More Replies...Yep! It was a hot day, so he just kicked 'em off. Definitely not dead lol
Load More Replies...Honestly, if you removed the cigs, you wouldn't even know this was taken like 100+ years ago. Kind of cool actually!
why not posting a photos of the wiped out cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which were habitated mostly by women, children and old people (while men soldiers were at the battlefields thousands of kilometers away)?
The dude in the back with the 'stache, mullet and short shorts is winning the mall fashion game.
Looking back, it’s hard for me to reconcile that this look was a neutral one and very common. Viewed now he really stands out but then his look would have been unremarkable. As a kid back then, this is what I remember many dads looking like. (Incidentally, my dad did, and still does, dress like the man just in front of him.)
Load More Replies...Yayyy Tape World. And I bet it wasn't even for masking tape...scotch tape....plumbers tape....electrical tape........
Tape world! I thought the other day about how to get to the song you wanted on a tape you had to fast forward or rewind til you found it! Good times 😂😂😂
Wow. Tape World. They only sold audio cassettes, so I'm sure they aren't around anymore.
Our spandex days and using a coat hanger to get our jeans done up
If you could zip up your jeans without lying down, they were too baggy
Load More Replies...I know what you're thinking. Did it fire six cylinders or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself
Back in the day the car's owner's manual explained how to set the timing, adjust the valves, set the linkages for the gearbox. Today's manuals: Do not let go of the steering wheel.
Beautiful soul and I think would have been a powerful, intelligent and needed voice in the world these days x

Load More Replies...Looks like a 4-8-4 "Northern" type locomotive and the yellow stripe suggests the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis RR. They called their late model 4-8-4s "Yellow Jackets."
Wiki says #576 is currently being restored to running condition!
Load More Replies...I appreciate that adverts feel and look as natural in the 1950’s as today’s adverts do. Consistency.
Any time I see pictures of teenagers/young people in diners in 1950s US, it just makes me think of segregation.
Yes there's been a lot of comments about how "wholesome" they seem. But the society back then was not virtuous or "innocent". And not just in regards to race. There's a sign on this diner's door, not 10 metres from this photo, refusing black people entry. Sadly, kids of this "social class" would have perpetuated the status quo.
Load More Replies...If you are an Elvis fan, go visit Graceland! The new resort on site is where we ran into Priscilla!!!
Shortly thereafter, they scored their first hit single, and were able to afford a better touring van
Why do they (especially Paul and Ringo) look photoshopped? Was it the colouring process?
Coloring process, but IIRC the original wasn't in great shape in the first place.
Load More Replies...Maybe I'll get backslash for saying this, but it's much, *much* more pleasant-looking. The visual pollution that is current Times Square is a bit of an eyesore, I must confess (at least it was to me when I went there).
But much more talented! You should look up some of the musicals she did.
Load More Replies...I suspect it might be something else she's loving 🤣she's having a lovely trip.
Always wonder when they show random crowd pictures of Woodstock. Do people recognize themselves 50 years later and say "Hey that's me!".
That awkward moment when you want to get down from your giant champagne glass.
Funny how all the cars are on the beach instead of in a parking lot. So different today.
I believe there are still places you can drive and park on the beach in Daytona.
Load More Replies...What gorgeous boys! I love this pic. They wouldn't have been as widely popular, but they were still pretty popular in certain Liverpool clubs, especially the Cavern (which they played 292 times.)
Ringo only joined in 1962. This looks about 1960, maybe '61.
Load More Replies...My mum has a story about going on a school excursion where they were allowed to wear casual clothes (normally had a school uniform). Her mum had sewn her a pair of hotpants that she wore, but when she got to school she found no one else was as 'dressed up' as her and she was really embarrassed. I just wish I had a photo!
That's what really short shorts were called back then.
Load More Replies...These shorts look too much like underwear. Their murfs are not too cool either. Actually, when women (or men) have murfs, it's never cool or cute.
Girls still wear shorts like this - but call them Daisy Dukes. IMO these are classier. As classy as you can be with your butt cheeks hanging out. :) Their legs looks awesome.
The Z-Boys were a group of American skateboarders in the mid-1970s from Santa Monica and Venice, California. Their innovative surfing-based style and aerial moves formed the foundations of contemporary vert and transition skateboarding.
Pretty cool documentary about them called Dogtown and Z-Boys
Load More Replies...Yes. She was only 14 when they met. We’d call his behavior predatory today.
Load More Replies...At least she doesn't have that beehive hairdo and thick makeup that made her look like the wife of Dracula.
I found it interesting that he was doing broadcasting while he was still playing.
Looking at these 60's photos, I found I like women's fashion of that era. They look gorgeous :)
Load More Replies...A snap from a film by the look of it. I'm sure I've seen that actor before. I'd put it late 60s, actually, or even early 70s. (I was in London in 65)
No...no it isn't. I graduated in '69 .... we might have been allowed to wear the tights but NEVER allowed to wear skirts tharpt short.
What a beauty! Curves where it counts and quite the thin body... The woman on top of it looks beautiful, too
I was concerned for a moment...
Load More Replies...Doing a little sightseeing while in town meeting his CIA contact. The Contras needed more guns.
My college friends and I did one just like this our senior year in the 90's. (A pajama party) It was super fun - even though someone did steal my whole shot glass collection. :(
Could be a re-coloured B/W photo that makes it look fake
Load More Replies...Can we please make this the new standard? Like, I don't care if you've got your bills spread out across your bed. I don't care if they're laid out across your new Porsche. I don't care if you've got them stuffed in some stripper's g-string. I wanna see you standing in a suit in the middle of a bank vault, like you're gonna pull an Ocean's Eleven.
Sounds a bit mean, but I wish we didn't have pictures like this at all. It's a bit distasteful.
Load More Replies...No way. There's no eagles, or McDonalds, or guns.

totally off topic, but so often people claim their extreme obeisity is genetic, nothing they can do. Then why are there only "normal" looking people on these old pictures? It's not like there was a famine in 1969?!
There weren't a lot of pictures or films of bigger people, either.
