Some construction work deserves an award for… the worst job ever seen. But it would be difficult to choose the grand prize winner. No matter how many uneven walls or doors leading to nowhere one has seen, there always seems to be more.

Quite a few of them end up on Reddit as phenomenal examples of how not to build things. As a matter of fact, an entire subreddit, called r/ConstructionFails is dedicated to such “marvels” of ingenuity. It’s hard to say if it’s lack of skill, negligence of safety protocols, or other reasons that lead to such results. But one thing is clear—a wolf would be able to huff and puff his way through most of the structures in the pictures, whether they’re built of straw, sticks, bricks, or any other material, for that matter.

Enjoy browsing this collection of exceptional work and make sure to check out Bored Panda’s previous compilation of construction fails.

It INFURIATES me that this stone installer was permitted to walk out of the residence with this still in the kitchen. It infuriates me that that the homeowner accepted this abomination and placed appliances and knickknacks all over the countertop. NO contractor would ever get away with a stunt like this in MY world.

Some people develop a love-hate relationship with construction work. It’s a process that requires lots of time and effort, which might be tiresome. It also takes patience (and at least a bit of skill), whether it’s Lego blocks or home renovation.

The love part is the urge to build something nice or bring something back to life. Yet even with the best of intentions, some projects are not meant to be fulfilled. Research shows that only 39% of projects succeed in meeting all the requirements for deadlines, budgets, and required features or functions. That leaves over 60% of them either late, over budget, or boasting quality similar to what you can see in these pictures.

But you're not gaining anything. You can't use that counter space because of the stairs. You'd be better off not having the counter across the stairs and just having stairs there.

That section of the bridge is hold in place just by gravity. To allow for thermal expansion. Strong enough for the load of the traffic on top.

I can only agree with the second part of your comment. A truck hitting the bridge in this manner (i.e. dump bed left up) exerts a relatively small lateral force when compared to seismic activity. It's inexcusable for modern infrastructure to be this vulnerable.

Construction fails happen for all kinds of reasons. Some might be related to poor planning, others fall fully on the shoulders of the construction workers. Be that as it may, it proves how important every detail is in this hazardous industry.

Building Research & Information determined four factors most structural failures can be traced to. The first two relate to errors in the design of permanent structures and the design of falsework. The third refers to the lack of communication between the designer and the builder. The final one indicates poor construction practices.

When it comes to construction work, you might want to double check everything. And by everything, we mean everything, starting with who’s responsible for overlooking it. Hiring a reliable crew is crucial no matter the project, as the consequences might be pretty unfortunate. Or absolutely hilarious.

Finding the right people for the job might not be an easy task to do, though. Data shows that skilled labor shortage is the main challenge of the global construction industry. It is followed closely by labor disputes and a lack of confidence.

This isn't "hydraulics go boom" This is daring the hydraulics to go boom. The hydraulic cylinders front and rear are extended and under pressure. Release the pressure and that backhoe would drop to the ground. A cylinder can bend/warp and get stuck at full reach but that didn't happen to all the hydraulic cylinders at once. These guys are just being stupid with safety.

Despite the difficulties in trying to find the right crew, construction workers comprise the largest segment of professionals in the field (17.3%), based on reviews by Finances Online. Carpenters take second place on the list (9.23%).

The number of professionals is likely to be on the rise with the growth of the industry. According to the aforementioned data, the annual growth of the US construction industry in the years from 2014 to 2019 reached 8.3%. Statista indicated that the number of production workers in construction increased in 2021 compared to 2020.

Nah, this is just a cheap lash up done by someone who doesn't know or care what they are doing. The larger range is a bit unlikely for a few reasons. Going by the sockets it's a UK property and the oven is a small standard single oven (common in rentals). Double ovens in the UK are more likely to be stacked, not side by side (often wall mounted). You do get range style ovens but they don't tend to be in small rentals - which this clearly is. I run a company that does a lot of between-let renovation work and I see this kind of thing a lot. Today in fact - the hob had fallen through the work top in today's rental. Lovely. Upvoting you though - because it's a reasonable hypothesis. 😀

That's close to what I'd probably manage. You definitely need experience/skill when using silicon.

For such tasks it's quite simple: it should be warm enough, draw a continious line along the sink/wall and then use for example the wooden stick of an ice-cream (Magnum-brand has nicely shaped ones) to evenly "smear" the silicon in the edge - in "one" smooth movement going from left to right or vice versa. Alternatively you can use your fingertip. Important: by dipping the wood/finger in a glass of warm water containing dish soap the silicone would not stick to the wood/finger (repeat dipping as needed - and continue the smooth drag). Good luck for your next try 😀. (Edit: added some bits to my explanation).

Employment data shows noticeable gender inequality in the construction industry. According to Statista, women comprised only around 11% of workers in 2021. That might be one of the reasons why female construction workers are still viewed as something rather unusual. As a consequence, they tend to receive commentary while working in this industry.

A survey conducted in the UK in 2019 showed that over 40% of women in construction received inappropriate comments from their male colleagues. In addition to that, as much as 72% of them experienced gender discrimination in the workplace.

I am a contractor and I’ve seen this at least a dozen times in my career. It’s even in the guest bathroom on the house that I bought in 2021. To fix it though, I have to replace the tile floor as well because they tiled up to the incorrectly installed vanity. Saving grace is their choice in flooring tile was terrible.

Lane coming from the foreground of the picture s-curves to the right before straightening out again to continue straight in the distance. Then a second lane gets added to the left (the sharp swerve of the kerb to the left) but also has a (shorter) s-curve before straightening out. That's the only way I can make sense of this not being a fail.

As seen in some of these pictures, some construction projects happen to be a do-it-yourself kind of endeavor. People with different skill sets try their hand at fixing or building something, which happens more often than one might think. According to Comfy Living, 36% of Americans start a DIY project to make their home a nicer place to live. Moreover, 57% of homeowners feel their house is still in a “work-in-progress” stage, whether it’s decorating or things in need of repair.

I had one in a corner with a huge area of shelf space you couldn't get to because of the plumbing for the sink. When the kitchen was redone, we flipped the cupboard access round to be from the other side. This one looks difficult due to the door. A sliding door or big door and carousel/magic slider would work though.

Should've been one size smaller cabinet. It would be 3 inch less wide. You fill the gap with a spacer. Place the same size countertop on it as you have now and it'll look great.

Whether it’s a DIY project or a problem that needs fixing around the house, people often turn to the internet for help. And to be fair, the online world can be a great source of information on how to repair or build things.

You can find all sorts of material, from instructions and manuals to people sharing their insights and advice from their own experience. However, it is important to properly evaluate your capabilities and leave certain things to the professionals. Or some projects might end up being as useful as stairs leading straight into a wall.

There's nothing wrong with this. The top plate is cut out for the pipe and this is normal. The nail plates are put in place. This is correct. The truss is within one width of the stud, so it will bear in the stud. There may other issues, but it seems to pass code from this photo.

Exactly. As long as the gap isn't too wide and it's solid, it doesn't have to be straight.

I don't get it. Do people just, like, not draw out their idea on paper? Like, at the very least, draw it out and have someone who knows what they're doing look it over. Not that hard or that expensive and just that little bit of effort beforehand saves, well, this sort of monstrosity.

Construction work is one of the places where you really want to avoid any mess-ups. Work of poor quality might result in a disaster or harm your reputation at best. In some cases, however, people responsible for the mishaps manage to avoid any bigger misfortunes.

Their main worry in these situations is usually ending up online as an example of how not to do your job. And that’s what makes the internet not only a great source of information on how to fix things but a bottomless pit of documented attempts that have gone wrong as well.

These RoRo (roll on, roll off) dumpsters are designed to do this. This is a picture of one as it's picking up a particularly heavy dumpster. When the dumpster is over the rear like that, it will lift the truck a foot or two off the ground until the center of gravity changes. Then it'll be fine. They can't drive like this.

Not that bad, rear wheels aren't pushed flat they seem normal so we can logically assume it is an acceptable weight, and the weight all at the back is going go lift the front end up no matter whether a little or a lot, it will return to normal once the weight is at its transportation position and being dispersed to everywhere rather than just the rear bumper

This again is quite common!!! The truck is unloading the container and of course is going to be rear-end heavy for a while, but he just drives forward and the wheels come back down gently-ish. Again, this is NOT a fail!!

A twist tie. That's all you need to fix this. Back in the 70s, dining room lights hanging from a chain (think sort of poor man chandelier) were popular. Often they were too low and you'd hit your head. You could alter it permanent by removing links from the chain but a common / easy fix was to just shorten the chain a bit with some twist ties or a small piece of wire.

Is that a stud wall (double plasterboard separated by 2x4 timber )? Just wondering how a stud wall would crush him. We use brick, but over the decades, the UK scrimp by putting in stud walls (except for the weight-bearing ones that are built with breeze blocks and brick).

Looks like a brick wall in the video. It came down very fast, suggesting it is very heavy. Also, look at all the pieces of brick and cement on the floor before it comes down. That likely came from the wall.

Yes, but more to the north: Friesland. The underground wqs way too weak as it was peat/torf. Currently they are fully dismantling the transformator as there is no way to get it back o a lorry. Ground is too soft for a heavy machine as a crane machine. https://lc.nl/friesland/tytsjerksteradiel/Afvoeren-transformator-bij-Tytsjerk-begint-na-kerst-28049264.html

It’s a multi-wheeled trailer designed for heavy loads like that transformer that’s lying on its side. The plywood panels were supposed to stop the wheels sinking into the dyke surface, but the whole thing is far too heavy for the dyke to support it, and has collapsed.

Shouldn't there be support beams in the center?? Does anyone know where I can look at to build deck stairs? About 10? We've been quoted anywhere from $1500.00 to $5000.00. So I'm trying to see if I can build one myself. One of the side board that holds the stairs is rotting apart. I have 2 x 4's for now. So any pointers I can get I would really appreciate it!! Thank you in advance!!

I would say get a professional for stairs, there is a specific formula that should be followed to build stairs correctly, and having it even slightly off can make you mis judge a step and fall....but if you want to try anyway lol... divide the height of the deck landing from the floor by 7", that will give you the number of steps you need, say it's 10...then divide the height by that number (10), that will give you the height each step needs to be spaced apart. Double that number and you get the depth of the tread. After that you can use a bevel to mark your stringers (the bits on either side of the treads) and get the length and cut it to shape and mark out where each tread goes. Depending on the width of the stairs you might need more inner support stringers..but like I said get a professional for stairs and handrails (again regulations say what height they must be at etc)

That isn't possible with this style of roofing. The shingles likely failed long ago and the sheathing has rotted away.

This usually happens after a renovation. There uses to be stairs there. But now that door is no longer in use, so no need to waste money on new stairs. To remove and seal up the wall was probably cost prohibitive.

I was already feeling sorry for the poor sod that got the end parking space due to the pillar, but now there are three spaces that are unusable and the pipe will be demolished by the first large vehicle that goes round the corner. One has to hope that is a temporary solution until they can relocate the outlet, which is currently going to a grate in the floor.

Next to Blackfriars Railway Bridge in London is the supports for a bridge that initially carried a railway line above it built in 1864. But the bridge was taken down in 1923 as it was to weak to support modern trains. But the supports were left behind. And they’re still there, a century later now!

On left kind of looks like new construction. Like owner on right built too close to property line and owner on left said, that's not my problem.

Was remodeling an old house and found a mystery line (interior, no Romex) leading from the box into the ground. Dug it up to find a live wire in the middle of the backyard. Turns out the previous tenants let folks live in tents in their backyard and ran the feed out so they could install lighting and a TV. Mind you, this yard was only about twenty by forty bananas, so an extension cord would have easily done the job. Don't do drugs, kids!

This was a two bedroom 'craftsman' house with detached garage. According to the neighbors, there were around 16 people living there when they were evicted. They laid carpet on top of carpet without cleaning up the cigarette butts first. It was a fun project.

Was that done before or after the concrete was set? If the latter, it wasn't the lazy option. Would likely have had to drill through it, far more effort than just going around. So even dumber than it being the lazy option.

The beams that have been doubled and tripled up at the top are supposed to have the double and triple beams all the way down for support is what I am guessing. It looks like a light breeze could blow this structure down.

The 2x4 wall board was too short. Rather than remove and replace, they are using 2 small 2x4s to gap the distance. That puts the entire weight of that section of the roof on 2 board held up with nails. This will sag and and cause cracks and damage within months at best. At worst, and depending on how many other boards weee like this, it throws off the load bearing capacity.

I think it's the far left cable that's just been randomly screwed in where it shouldn't have been; it doesn't seem properly connected like the 3 cabled in the middle.

I have no idea what's wrong, but then I'm a Brit and we have a half-way sane domestic power layout. I have no idea how US three-phase works and I don't need to.

It's not three phase. It's US 220v with neutral. Do not look it up if you've eaten recently or are feeling at all unwell. While most US standards are, as we all know, devised by drunken monkeys, their domestic electrical standards are devised by rabid, tweaking monkeys.

That must be one hell of a dryer if it needs a 3-phase power supply! I have absolutely no idea why there are so many terminals, or why it needs to be permanently wired in like this, but normal convention is that a dryer would have a live, a neutral and an earth. Never seen a flat cable like that before either, but sense would dictate that the terminals should be in the same order as the flex, but these are crossed over. In the UK we just use an ordinary plug, as 13A at 240V is over 3kW.

In the USA we have split-phase, so we have two lines and a neutral for 240V.

I have a question for the electricians here: A commercial electrician wired my new house--for considerably less than others I checked with. He installed my outlets with neutral at the top instead of the bottom, as I have seen in most residences. At the school where I teach, I see the neutral at the top of the outlets here, too. Just wondering why this may be (if it even is) the case: that commercial properties have the neutral at the top and residences the bottom.

If the plug comes out slightly, and something conductive were to fall on it, it won’t bridge the hot and neutral, at worst a rigid piece of debris will bridge hot and ground which is less dangerous.

Red and black are the two "hot" wires (for 240V) with a neutral white. On the 3-wire cord to the dryer, the center is almost certainly the neutral but it's connected to red. Can't see where the ground is going.

Who needs grounding anyways or a tension clamp/protector? That neutral wanted to be a hot anyways. Would love to see the panel/breaker damage that caused

Agreed, this is just anti-theft measure. Not a great one but that's the intent. You often see similar with a generator or tool box hanging from a crane.

I've had to operate one of these "man lifts" for work once. I was painting a roof peak on an apartment building next to a very busy road. They tend to bounce while operating the controls from far above. No thanks.

Definitely would not recommend driving one while extended. Every move is tripled at the top. Should always be lowered to move, like a high reach forklift or cherry picker forklift.
