If you’ve ever worked in retail, you know the mix of chaos, confusion, and unexpected humor that comes with the job. Stephen Beals, the creator behind the comic series Adult Children, captures these everyday struggles perfectly. His simple, expressive art and spot-on timing turn frustrating moments—like dealing with entitled customers or impossible managers—into laugh-out-loud experiences that many who have survived a shift behind the register might relate to.
Beals has been making daily comics for years, and his work is a reminder that even in the most stressful jobs, humor can be the best way to get through the day. Scroll down to check out the newest batch of his relatable strips!

That's my beef. The more I like a product, the further up the odds are that it'll be discontinued or no longer in stock for months or years if at all ever again. (looking at YOU ALDI!)
This is me.... (the customer). Seriously, what happened to Pilsner Urquell in Australia? They found out it's the only beer I drink?
You do all know that, these days, staff in stores have zero input on purchasing. It's all done by head office using flaming algorithms!
Yes, I know. But the staff are here and Corporate is hiding out of attack range in their offices!
Load More Replies...This is so true for so many stores. If it sells, they stop carrying it, On the flip side, I've seen companies discontinue things because sales are down. If the retailers won't order enough, it's not going to sell because the shelf is always empty. Big pharma is equally guilty. If a med works, it's a guarantee it's getting discontinued or doctors won't prescribe it. I've had 2 discontinued and replaced with generics that are as effective as water.
Stayed in a campground once where the snack shop did not carry a very popular chocolate bar. The reason given was that it constantly sold out so they just stopped carrying it. Have to admire that kind of logic :p
I remember the temptation to say such things all too vividly from my time in retail.
"I did not tell her she was stupid! I just asked a question..." "What question?" "I asked her if she was stupid."
Load More Replies..."Interact with the customers" "But what if they don't want to interact?" "Interact. with. the. customers.!!"
Funny how "Tabby" is a common name for a cat. And also a description. "M"
This reminds me of when I was on register at my college job and these two business looking ladies came up. One of them says, "This is the kind of job I need. Just mindless." Like thanks. 🙄
That's me, except I would have reached that conclusion without bothering Tabby.
But how do you decide which one to actually use at home? Do you pour them together?
Load More Replies...I always felt bad for the women who had to work that when I had to work on the road. So many weirdos.
Load More Replies...Except at some point they'll realize your job can be done from oversees for a fraction of the price. Job I had 15 years ago, I told my workers that they're lucky they had full time jobs that in the near future stores would replace all but managers with part time workers and even some managers would become part time. Here we are, 2025, and it's already in place.
Load More Replies...Oh dear, the term "whippets" has an entirely different meaning on my side of the pond, lol. I thought what?! when I read your reply then I remembered your puppy(s).
Load More Replies...And then singing "all I want for Christmas is you" sounds rather insulting...
Load More Replies..."Hi there! We're Visa and MasterCard. Happy holidays! You work for us now!"
Actually, the shareholders. They own the company and employ the board.
There are multiple types of shareholders. They are not all weighed the same in many cases. I can create executive shares for my company that give a disproportionately high number of votes to keep control even with public shareholders.
Load More Replies...Number one question I was asked when I worked retail was, "Where's the restroom?" Men's and women's were in different places; sometimes on different floors.
I don't understand? In what Bizarro World do people *like* self-checkout?
* Not to be confused with the Emotional Attack Magpie.
Load More Replies...I think that mug is actually running the whole store as some strange way to amuse itself.
These are great 😄. Extra votes for the signs, the mug faces, and the cat. The hairstyles were amazing. But Tabby is waaaaaay too smart for that job. Well done, more please 👍🏻😊
These are pretty good. I especially liked the background gags delivered Burma-shave sign style.
every time i see that there are more of these comics, i always expect to find the same great things in these, and this one was no exception. the signs in the background, the coffee mug, and tabby saying the stuff that needs to be said while working retail. these comics always seem to make my day a little better :)
Some of these are the same pictures as last time, but with different captions. I suppose that counts as "New Pics" (just about)...
