This Online Group Is “Showcasing The Idea That We Live In A Dystopia That Is Boring” One Post At A Time (50 Posts)
One may think a dystopia is just a trope of science fiction writing. Outlandish possibilities of human or not-so-human realities, where all that we fear becomes an inescapable fact of daily life. Again, it’s just fiction, right? Well, sometimes the present is a lot more disturbing than meets the eye.
The “Boring Dystopia” subreddit has been sharing posts that show just how broken the matrix is, or, mayhaps, the fact that one of those is just a matter of imagination, as a completely controlled environment would not allow for this much chaos. How did we end up here? Your guess is as good as mine. How do we get out is the question we need to start asking.
As you scroll through this list, make sure to upvote the worst of the worst that reality has to offer, and leave some comments below, and if you’re craving some more bitterness to further ruin your day, here is another article for you. Now let’s get into it.

If we are to consider all of the things in life that are looming over us—global warming, the housing crisis, rising inflation, wars, famine, natural disasters, overpopulation, etc.—we’ll very quickly get overwhelmed by the increasingly blank picture that the future paints for us. So we run. We look the other way.
But maybe our avoidance of the burning issues at hand is what’s caused it to get this bad in the first place. So today, let’s touch on just the tip of the iceberg of the dystopian present day we are living in. It may not seem that bad! But the more you read the posts shared by the subreddit r/boringdystopia, the more you may realize how bad we’ve let things get. And yet, it’s not even that interesting, all things considered.
This Is So Painful
They're Not Wrong
In many cases in life, dealing with problems head-on is the only way to get things to change, be it for the better or worse. After all, change is inevitable regardless of how much we want things to stay stable and undisturbed. However, there is only so much that each of us has control over, especially when it comes to problems that are far-reaching and globally concerning.
To protect ourselves from the unrelenting pressure and the constant gnawing feeling of doom, we escape. We look the other way. There are two things that coexist in the matter of escaping reality, and Michael Patanella identifies them as avoidance and dissociation. Both offer temporary relief when taken in moderation, but of course, this can get out of hand easily.
When A Dystopia With Hungry Children Is Painted As A Feel Good Story
SO TRUE!! We no longer have free lunches at our school, and it’s not cheap! (Although the lunches at our school are good)

The coping mechanisms that come with escapism can be destructive and unhealthy, even in the short term. Cheap alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, overeating, endless mind-numbing activities, and easily available credit cards that lead to holidays, mindless purchases, and debt are just a few of the ways people choose to avoid the problems they face.
As stated by Amanda Dacquel, when we avoid, we live on a repeat loop, until we hit a wall at full speed, with a poster on it that says “the real world.” Responsibilities will catch up to us in one way or another, so it’s best to use the tool of escapism in small increments to help restore our batteries rather than numbing us away from existing in the chaos that is life.
Must We Apply Whatever We've Learned?
What's The Cause?
Exactly
For those of us who are a bit too comfortable with escapism, there are ways of getting out of the continuous cycle of mindless pleasure and avoidance of responsibility. According to Patrick Allan, enforcing the “real life-right now” rule may be a good place to start. The more fun you make real life seem, the less you may feel the need to escape it.
Meeting up with your friends instead of blowing them off to play a video game, for example, is essentially substituting one positive experience for another. Just make sure the real-life thing is something you at least think you will enjoy, otherwise it could send you crawling back to escapism. Furthermore, realizing what you’re trying to escape from and why is key to grounding yourself.
Stealing Might Be The Word For It
A Big Sham
A rent payment is not a credit transaction. Try to understand the difference. The real kicker is that you might think paying off a debt would improve a persons credit worthiness ie. I borrowed money and then paid it back before I said I would. Nope, closing a credit line by paying it off lowers your credit rating. Now that is bass ackwards.
The Root Of Our Dysfunction
Let's all thank the Supreme Court and Citizens United. I'll believe "corporations are people, too" [Mitt Romney] when a corporation gets sentenced to death in Texas.
But now we enter the phase where we’ve stopped running away from the problems and come to realize what a mess life is. Can we really prevent the current-day dystopia from spreading further, ruining lives and potentially making us go extinct? According to Duncan Jefferies, the one way to stop sleepwalking towards it all is through an informed citizenry. A what?
He continues to argue that teaching critical thinking in schools and having researchers work across different disciplines so that they’re better prepared to tackle the ethical questions that will shape the 21st century, are ways to achieve this. We need more dialogue between the people working on new technologies and the policymakers who create the laws around them, as well as greater openness about the risks.
Essentially, stay informed and trust the lawmakers to do the right thing. Grand. Guess it’s time to unionize and protest against the system. Just a thought.
America Is A Joke At This Point
Someone posted a photo of their itemised maternity bill from a US hospital on another forum a while back-it included a $50 charge for "skin to skin care." Skin to skin is literally putting the naked baby onto the mother or father's bare chest. It's meant to help with temperature regulation, and is alleged to help soothe the baby immediately after birth, but its not a medical procedure. Mum picks up the baby, puts it on her chest, and the hospital charges $50 for a midwife to watch? It's utterly ludicrous. The American healthcare system is beyond a joke.
Is It Too Challenging?
Pro-Life? Nah, I Think The Right Term Is Pro-Birth
As a dystopic future looms over us and lawmakers become complacent, forgetting to look at the bigger picture, we must remain vigilant and remember that the shape of the world is in our hands. What we do matters and, truthfully, the sheer number of us doing a little every day can lead to something very substantial in a little bit of time. If there is a livable planet in the next 50 years or so that is…

My taxi driver today was asking about healthcare in the US and I told him about people not having money for insulin just dying. He is a dialysis patient and wondered if the cost was covered. i honestly don't know but I am not super hopeful. I genuinely believe homework should be banned or extremely limited
I have no objection to homework when it's limited to "reading with mummy and daddy" and similar activities. There's a limit to what can be achieved in a classroom of six year olds without one on one attention, and this is where the parents still need to be involved in their child's education - plus, it's a family bonding time. Once it gets to maths, essays, research - no, there should be dedicated time during the school day (which shouldn't start before 8:30 am either!) where the student can get support if needed from someone qualified in educational needs, not a tired overworked parent who doesn't understand why how you add numbers has changed since they were in school and doesn't contribute anything but frustration to the learning process.
This sounds so plausible that it's scary. Especially when you have a teacher that thinks an hour of homework isn't too much, but doesn't realize the students have 4 or 5 other teachers who think the same thing.
I always believed this. Homework only ever taught me frustration and I learned to hate certain things I might have loved.
It shouldn't be. The point of homework is A: making sure kids actually understood what they learned in class enough to do it on their own and B: to teach them self control to stop doing something fun and do something boring. The issue is that schools give too much homework and assign homework kids need help with. Effective homework should be completable in less than 30 minutes without the help of a parent.
Or none at all, because that's why they go to school. See also: finnish education system.
Load More Replies...Teacher here: Useless, busy work as homework should be banned. Practicing a skill you learned in skill should not. Brain science will tell you, that it's better to learn something by visiting it multiple different times in shorter bursts. So, assigning 25 division problems to a child that understands it, yes, is probably a waste. Assigning a few division problem for a child to practice at home and revisit, much better.
I remember at school my teacher telling me I need to do my homework because it’ll be expected of me when I’m older… I thought she meant when I go to uni :/
Ok, this is just my opinion, but I think that homework is good, just no more than 7-8 hours a week-it does help academically and as a year 7 student, I don’t mind it
I remember as a kid getting my homework confiscated by doing it in class....
I would ALWAYS do my homework at school so my private time was unsullied. My grades were good.
Last semester I got at least an hour of calc homework every day (not me being lazy, estimates buy the teacher), work from business designing parts of a small business and writing up essays on random youtube videos (almost all at home), large projects by my bio teacher with short deadlines, and the little bits from my other classes like the occasional essay or doing activities through online services. All this and I'm not even taking a history class this year and have two periods with no homework at all. I love theater but I barely have the time to do after school activities with all I have to do every day. I am 15 years old. At least I'm not at the age where I'm expected to keep a part time job on top of all this. Lol I'm pretty sure my cute lil espresso machine is the only thing getting me through the mornings.
I agree that homework doesn’t need to be excessive (and little kids don’t need any!) but you have to have something if you are college bound. If I I had no homework or the skills developed with studying outside the classroom, college would’ve been a real struggle. And unless students are guaranteed a study hall everyday - how much time is devoted to teaching/ lecture if classes have homework time built in?
I got heavily downvoted for posting this sentiment the other day, I guess I should have posted it as a screenshotted tweet instead /s /jk
or we could of course increase school hours and make revision classes complusory! It would cost a lot more, of course! but they do it in boarding schools.
Speaking as an (ex) teacher, I can assure you that homework is better for learning. It helps the students' memory to revise each day's lessons. And also remember that we teachers also have 'homework'. Marking, planning lessons -- we don't just fly by the sweat of out pants. We actually try to help kids. learm.
ALL of the education system is designed to make corporate PENCILS out of beautiful, diverse FORESTS.
I hadn't thought about it like that. I guess that's what happened to me
I had a co-worker whose teenage sister-in-law was living with him and his wife for awhile. He told me she didn't have homework assigned. He even called the school and asked- apparently, all school work is done in school now. Imagine that.
For the past two years I've been doing homeschooling because of covid (this year is my first year back) and for a whole semester, I had almost 10 hours of work per day because of a mistake the school district made and when confronted they said basically to just deal. That is the main reason why I'm back in school.
Ohhh, not a bad theory, really. I don't understand how people put up with it, really.
Homework used to be a punishment... this doesn't seem like we are progressing does it...
That is exactly how my fifth grade teacher explained homework to us in 1975.
Kids are in school for 7 hours a day, all work should be completed there. After school and weekends are for family and recreation.
After 8 hours in class, children should be able to unwind and regain their peace. Not carry on the stress.
As a child I say yes to this some nights i don’t eat and stay up to 2 or 3 am doing homework and usually I still don’t finish it all and have to do it in my (non block schedule periods 123456 everyday) classes it’s really messed up I usually like to workout to bring me a good mode but I can’t anymore I just don’t have time
I think this neees nuance. For example i always give my students assignments/homework they can finish in class. If they for some reason decide to do something else than i expect them to finish it at home. Their own work mentality in class determines how much they have to do at home. I agree with the fact of they have six sibjects per day or whatever and every teacher gives them home work then it's ridiculous. But they need to practice whether in class or at home or they won't learn.
I hated homework as a kid, but I can realize its benefits. People are getting too lazy.

I may be wrong here, but women choose to be nuns. If you don't want to wear a nun's habit, don't become a nun. It's the woman's decision, based not only on her faith but on her life choice (as in "work uniform"). Simple. There are countries where a woman merely going outside without hijab is punished and occasionally killed. I don't see the two as being comparable. Unless the bigotry is against women, rather than religion. Plenty of places where that's the case.

When they arrived he started shooting at them so the supervisor got the workers to safety and called the police. I do think he had a mental illness, possibly paranoid schizophrenia. The simple act of cutting his lawn could have triggered a psychotic episode and he thought he was being attacked so decided he had to defend himself against them. My ex was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia because he tried to strangle our 2 1/2 year old daughter who was crying. The doctor explained that on his psychotic state the crying was her trying to kill him so he decided to kill her before she could kill him. Daughter is fine and no he was never allowed to be alone with them again and we split up

As European with friends in the US it makes me sad and angry, too. And while we're still better off in Europe in terms of healthcare/support of people with low income etc, income and wealth inequality and all the problems associated with it is growing here as well. Sadly, we (or at least the politicians) are quite arrogant when it comes to the situation in the US instead of trying to implement measures that prevent further inequality so we don't go down that road. Which, I suppose, at least partly shows that many decisions here are also driven by corporate lobbyism - just a bit more covert.
