26 Of The World’s Biggest ‘Mess Around And Find Out’ Cases Shared By People Online
Interview With ExpertThe world is full of all kinds of people, some who take a lot of risks, and others who are content staying in their lane. The folks who keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible may get rewarded for their actions, or end up going too far and having to pay the price.
This list is all about such people who overshot the mark and then had to face the consequences of their actions. Some of these might be well deserved, and others should probably just serve as a warning, incase you ever feel like doing the same thing.

Trumpers being deported. Trumpers losing their family farms. Trumpers being fired from government jobs. Etc., etc., etc. ……
You thought it was ok for everyone else. You didn’t think it would happen to YOU.

The best definition of a Republican I've heard is 'someone who will happily eat shít for breakfast on the off chance a liberal might smell his breath'.

"I wanted to own the libs! I didn't think it would happen to MEEEEEE!"
Load More Replies...I'm adopted, but my family is Mexican. My immediate family members were all born in America, so they're citizens, but I repeat, they are HISPANIC. ALL OF THEM voted for Trump. We also own a housecleaning business and our employees are, you guessed it, Hispanic. I don't understand how my mother and sister can suckle on the Mango Mussolini's teat and NOT realize that someone in our family or one of our employees will eventually get screwed over. (I'm already personally cackling inside about how the Orange Julius Caesar cut Medicare funding... my mom is 80 and our PPO insurance dropped her years ago, so all she HAS is Medicare.)
In Germany a significant number of right wing voters (ya know: the party who wants to keep "Germany for Germans") are second generation immigrants, mostly from Russia. They hate that "those immigrants come here and get everything for free, when we had to work for everything we have". They're often staunch Putin supporters, too. People seem to look for a leader, and for some reason they interpret narcissism to competence. "He says, he's the bestest of 'em all, and he should know!" Baffling.
Load More Replies...I dont feel sorry for any Trump supporter who is harmed by his f****d up policies.
Me either. Oh, you changed your mind now? Not forgiven.
Load More Replies...While it took way too long, it's good to now see comedians s**t on Joe Rogan and his cronies for pushing to support these a******s. Rogan's massive growth mostly came about because of the pandemic, which is when so many people grew a following, and now even his own fans have started to turn on him. The same with Theo Von and other comedians who pivoted to politics to platform the worst people. It's all downhill from here, baby!
Nothing surprising. That’s the mentality of tyrant worshippers. Just a while ago, a colleague of mine posted some utter c**p about how great Lenin and Stalin were and how everyone must thank them. I said, “yeah, especially the people they m******d”, to which she literally replied that it was okay to murder all those people because “undesirable elements had to be purged to ensure a brighter future”. I asked her what would she say if her family had to be “purged” like that, and she literally replied, “then I would humbly accept the fact that it was necessary” (!) … There is no reasoning with such people. They are zombified.
They didn't think it would happen to them - or anyone who looked like them.
Not American, so I don't really have a say in the matter, but I'd still guess that America would be Greater without the Trumpers. Problem is, no-one else wants them either. Perhaps North Korea...? Well, El Salvador didn't seem to mind filling their inhuman prisons with Whoever, so if it's good for the goose (according to them), it's probably good for the gander too (i.e. themselves).
In recent events, I would like to think when the Russians thought they could take Kyiv in just a few days and then they found out how hard Ukrainians would fight for their land.
Ukraine now has the respect of everyone in the free world, but respect alone does not win wars. I fear a 'stitch-up' by Our Dear Leader to guarantee himself yet more personal gain.
Our Dear Leader tried to get Ukraine to sell their rare minerals to us as part of a support package. I think it was during that big blow-up at the White House.

Some attackers of the first wave did not even carry serious weapons, just parade uniforms and flags. They thought they would be welcomed as liberators. There was a russian tank troup that actually stopped at some ukrainian barracks asking for fuel - they were very surprised when they were captured instead of getting supplies.
Followed by idiot Americans and Brits who join the Russian army to fight against Ukraine to "save the West" and realise they are cannon fodder and despised. Although they hopefully have their own entry in this list
Earonn: I've heard of Brits joining the Ukrainian army and supporting the Ukrainian cause - never any Brits signing up to fight for Russia. I mean, if you want to "save the West" a good place to start is defending the West against the Eastern invasion from Russia... 😬

Best FAFO I can think of - That missionary guy who went to prohibited Island off the South Coast of India despite ban and multiple warnings.
Religious people - well, Christians (of all flavors) in particular - seem to be unbelievably determined to cram their religious beliefs down everyone else's throats. Many Christians really hate it when you bring up stuff like the Crusades and how many people that Christians have s!aughtered in the name of Big Sky Daddy.
Muslims and their jihad are no better

But some people, especially Christians, think these resctrictions don't apply to them because they have the "right" to force their beliefs on others. It's funny they call this "indoctrination" when it's not them.
Even Mother Theresa said it didn't matter if the children died. Just that they are saved before they die. Christians are pretty sick.

The idea behind it is to get out of your comfort zone and to test the boundaries of what you know to be true. Sometimes, it might be a mistake to do, but even the wrong path can be a good life lesson.
Even if it seems scary to push past your safe place, it can help you gain many new life skills and a new level of confidence in your own abilities. Curiosity about the world is a good thing, and it can open up many new and interesting opportunities for you to try out. The only important thing is to try.
Brexit. Leaving Europe seems like a good idea! What's the worst that could happen?
Oh...
The Brexit campaign seems now, in hindsight, to be a textbook case of "FAFO" added to "in politics, big lies can get you to the top". £350 million a week ... risible in retrospect, but quite convincing in a time of no fact-checking and virulent newspaper campaigning. I wonder which of today's commonly accepted beliefs will turn out to be built on sand ...
The worst part of the Brexit campaign for the whole UK was, that it was targeting the EU-members eastern-european nations, polish for the most, because they are the most "visible" over there. But every other eastern-european nation took it as personal.Hungarians, slovakians, romanians, bohemians, slovenians, croatians ...and so on. So Uk woke up one day, without not enough essential workers in healthcare and constructions fields, also with investment companies freaking out. That was a very expensive trolling.
Load More Replies...BJ openly admitted that the £350m per week was a made up figure and 'sounded about right and believable'. Yay for longer queues at airports and the end of the free movement.
The funniest thing I saw about this was the fishermen who voted to leave thinking their catch would now be consistently sold to their own country because there would essentially be no "foreign" competition. Only to find out the British mainly only have taste for a specific, mild white fish. So their catch wasn't selling locally but now they couldn't sell it internationally either. So they were completely f****d. IF ONLY THERE WERE A WAY TO PREDICT THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!! I don't know if they ever got help from the government, which would also be funny because these are the a******s that hated people dependent on government assistance. Look, the Tories are to blame for this for literally lying about Brexit but dumb , racist a*****e voters FAFO.
The bit that blew my mind was all the farming communities voting FOR Brexit! WTLF? A lot of them only survived because of European subsidies. I voted remain and Brexit pisses me of immensely to this day! They didn't even have to do it! It was basically an opinion poll! F**K THE TORIES AND F**K NIGEL FARAGE AND F**K WHATEVER HIS NEW PARTIES CALLED THIS WEEK. RACISTS D**K HEADS THE LOT OF THE.M.

This - the margin was so small, it wasn't binding but despite the lies that this was sold on, they went ahead. Then the same wankers who voted for it are up in arms because there is no cheap labour anymore, everything is stuck in Dover and they have to apply for visas to live in the country they live in - WHICH WAS NOT EVEN UK.
I hate every person that voted to leave the EU. And everyone I know that made that choice cannot provide any sound reasoning for doing so. Which is basically admitting their bigotry and ignorance.
Yeahhhhh..... although my favourite part was people in Spain, etc crying they had to leave the country because they are not actually citizens... you got what you voted for.
It has to be the American family who moved to Russia as it was less woke and now he's on the front line in Ukraine.
Many americans has false ideas about what a dictatorship is looking like living day-to-day there. Communism is not fun. Socialism is not fun. And first of all, a dictatorship is not fun. Yeah, you wouldn't find "woke" on a daily basis, but also you wouldn't find any liberty and freedom to be allowed having your own thoughts. So, you ask, what's my concept, than? Social-democracies ... they are working quite okayish in most of european countries, even in the former ex-soviet ones forced allies ones.
Petra Peitsch: socialism is great. Socialism is what keeps all developed nations working well. I know a lot of Americans have been programmed to respond negatively to the word "socialism", but see what they say when you tell them that they can't have Medicare and Medicaid and all the other implementations of socialism in the USA. See? Meanwhile, the USA elected a president after he actually promised to be a dictator... 🤣 Communism might be good, might be bad: but the thing is, actual real Communism's never been tried. No, I am absolutely *not* volunteering - but it would be interesting to see how it worked out, provided I was a long way away. 😉

Decades ago, a computer expert proved just how easy it was to hack into and change votes, and we should have reverted to paper ballots with receipts at that point.

I always think it’s crazy that a random celebrity can choose to be president (or at least put their name in the ballot for being elected). They can prove during interviews and debates that they are bad people, are idiots and have no knowledge about the role but people always vote for a celebrity. Not just America. People always vote for the well known candidate.

As you might have noticed from this list, some people had full confidence in their decision, but it ultimately did them more harm than good. One unfortunate example of this is Steve Jobs’ plan to forgo life-saving surgery in favor of natural remedies like dietary supplements and acupuncture.
He refused to undergo any surgical procedures for around nine months because he had full faith in the alternative methods that he had chosen. Folks around him had advised him not to do so, but he realized his mistake too late, once his health had severely deteriorated. This shows just how powerful certain beliefs are that might take us along the wrong paths, and how we need to periodically question ourselves.

What’s really interesting to note is that some people tend to take more risks than others and seem comfortable doing so. To understand this better, Bored Panda reached out to Dr. Charlotte Russell, who is a Clinical Psychologist in the UK and the founder of The Travel Psychologist.
We asked her why some folks do such drastic things, and she mentioned that it might be “a combination of factors. Personality is an important factor, with a proportion of the population being naturally inclined to take risks. This may be accompanied by impulsivity or, in some cases, an inflated sense of self.”
She also mentioned that “in some cases, the risky behaviour escalates over time. This may be because, after repeated exposure to it, the person becomes less sensitive, a phenomenon known as ‘risk normalisation.’ Social media may also be a factor, as people attempt more and more extreme behaviours in the search for likes and follows.”
Steve Jobs trying to fight his treatable cancer with a juice diet.
Some really smart people in a specific field, could be very stupid, when it's about common sense. Covid showed this very painfully. Two people in m country, being successfull in different fields (musician and sportperson) have died because of lacking common sense. While they were not loud anti-wax., they didn't take the vaccine, leading to their passing away.
Or he was so used to being praised for his ideas that he got into his head that he couldn't be wrong... Not incompatible to be fair

I agree on both counts. I do, however, take umbrage when parents force non-medical alternative treatments on their children's' ailments/cancers - it's still technically their RIGHT as parents to refuse to have their child's cancer treated with chemo and to wave crystals over their child instead, but it does infuriate me.

This always brings up the mental image of that "influencer" who was making selfies with a wild bison. I've stood next to a bison in a zoo, it was behind proper fencing but did come very close, and it was so incredibly massive! Most of the people on this list are extreme examples of what could happen if you take things too far. In reality, a little risk and curiosity can actually be beneficial. Dr. Charlotte mentioned that “being curious is good for our wellbeing and helps with creativity. However, it is crucial to be aware when our curiosity leads us to take risks.”
“Most people will be able to reflect on their personality and how comfortable they are with taking chances. Most of us who aren’t naturally risk takers will be quite clear about where the line is,” she added. That’s why, if you’ve realized that you’re more likely to take things to the extreme, it’s important to think things through and also check in with people who aren’t so impulsive.
It is common knowledge that Gurkhas are fierce fighters and you simply don't f**k around with them.
One fateful day, a Gurkha soldier was travelling on a train in India when more than 20 bandits entered his coach with the hopes that they can get away with looting innocent and unarmed people. When they tried to sexually a*****t a woman, it was simply too much for the Gurkha soldier. He single handedly fought off more than 20 bandits with the help of his Khukhri knife, [offing] a few during the face off.

Alright calm down everyone. Gurkhas are members of the British Army recruited directly from Nepal. They mainly join the Gurkha Rifles but also other regiments occasionally. They are some of the most disciplined and well trained soldiers in the world and even the SAS who have fought alongside them are in awe of what they can do in a battle. Loyal, ferocious and dangerous when cornered. Thanks to Johanna Lumley leading a campaign on their behalf, all Gurkhas are now eligible to retire to the UK on full military pensions. Some of the most remarkable acts of bravery have been down to Gurkhas and they are universally respected in the British military. These things may not be well known outside military circles.

The Potato: Gurkhas? Put it like this. Some Gurkhas are part of the British Army - recruited from Nepal. Have you heard of the British Army? Right. Well, the British Army has special forces including the SAS. The SAS aren't frightened of *anyone* that they'll admit to. But they'd never dare go up against the Gurkhas. But not Gurkhas. Something like' Don't f**k about with them or you'll end up ready-sliced in Tesco's at 50p a Lb.

Load More Replies...Climate change is a natural process our globe is going through. Although it takes millions of years for it to pass naturally. We managed to accelerate this process. The problem is not "Save the Earth", is more "Save the humanity". Earth will be okay till our Sun will die out absorbing and destroying our actual planetary system. Earth is okay, we are just making unliveable for ourselves.
All government references to climate change are being erased. That will surely end climate change, right?
US government? All governments are not doing this!?!
Load More Replies...There appear to be two reactions to claims of climate change . a) There's not enough evidence to back it up (usually because we've just closed down the departments that kept the records), and b) it's too late now, it would cost the country too much, and how bad can it get anyway? By the time the rising tides flood the Metro/Underground/Subway/buried train tracks in our big coastal cities, and their inhabitants move out to find somewhere dry to live, there won't be much of a country left to complain, anyway. Our grandchildren won't deserve their inheritances - broken countries, food shortages, and monumental displacement of starving peoples - but we won't be around to apologise - rather like the slave-owners dying peacefully in their nice warm beds, refusing to accept how bad their choices had been.
c) Its good, for our business/*other stuff* d) fake/woke! 😑

In 2000, Netflix offered to sell itself to Blockbuster for just $50 million. Blockbuster laughed and said no, thinking streaming was a joke. Fast forward a few years and Netflix exploded, Blockbuster went bankrupt. That one “nah, we’re good” turned into one of the worst business decisions ever made.
In 2000 Netflix wasn’t even talking about streaming, they were a mail-order rental service.
Although, would the Yahoo management team have made as great a success of things as Google have? Quality of management is a major factor in business success.
Load More Replies...The Borders bookstore change decided to outsource on-line sales instead of doing it themselves. They put it in the hands of this company called Amazon.
Not exactly. Netflix didn't start streaming until 2007. They had already started closing stores starting in 2005 because of Netflix's popularity. Where Blockbuster failed was implementing their own movies-by-mail service which by its very design meant people never needed to step into a Blockbuster again. They realized that because they decided to let customers bring the mailers into the store (we'd release them of the burden of mailing them themselves) to exchange for more free movies. So the slower stores, like mine, saw their rental revenue dry up fast. The thought process was (or lack of) was customers would spend money on candy, popcorn, sodas & the for sale movies. Naturally they did not.
I think the funnier situations are most of the decisions Yahoo has made over the years.

Sweden, then 100 years later France, then 100 years later Germany, invading Russia in the winter.
Napoleon's armies invaded Russia in June - high summer. Extreme heat and heat-related diseases had kílled around a half (200,000) of the French troops before they reached Moscow. Any further advance was made impossible by their losses in manpower and their severely stretched supply lines and by the time Napoleon came to terms with his mistakes and ordered the retreat in late October winter was setting in. By the time the retreat got fully under way in November the cold was so extreme that it slowed them down and kílled off another 100,000. So not only did the French NOT invade in winter, it was heat, not cold, that kílled the greater number of French troops.
Let's not forget that until then armies had only ONE uniform. It included the "shako" (a leather cap with brass trims), the "habit-veste" (a dark blue heavy wool coat), a cotton shirt, a leather "cravate" around the neck, heavy cotton trousers, leather gaiters and shoes. This was to be worn at all times. In winter they would have some extra: a pair of wool overalls, a wool "grand-capote" coat on top of the blue one, and maybe sheepskin lining on the boots. Then there was the musket and random equipment weighing between 30 and 35 kg, and consider each man was allowed only a 1 liter canteen for the day. It's not surprising that summer marches, commonly covering 25-35 km per day, were lethal. A regiment would normally lose 10-20% of effectives over a major transfer in the summer, and we have records of regiments losing 15% of effectives IN A DAY while marching in the Spanish summer campaigns of the Peninsular War.

The demon core.
In 1945 scientist Harry Daghlian suffered fatal radiation poisoning and died 25 days later after accidentally dropping a tungsten carbide brick onto a sphere of plutonium, which was later nicknamed the demon core.
Then, in 1946 scientist Louis Slotin accidentally irradiated himself during a similar incident using the same "demon core" sphere of plutonium involved in the Daghlian accident.

Less known fact is, that the hungarians wanted to "break up" with the austro regime in 1848, 65 years before the things went unmanagable. In 1848-49, the hungarians had their own "Independence Fight', but as you can imagine, Habsburgs had more backup from the whole european monarchies to whom they were and are related, "thanks" to centuries of inbreed. The sarcastic part is, that after WW I, even Austria got territories from Hungary as a war-compensation.
I just think they were pressing their luck when they called it WW1. People are gonna want a sequel.
They wanted a sequel for "Caddyshack", and look how that turned out.

The Argentinians invading the Falklands.
When the world sides with Margaret Thatcher against you, you know you've screwed up big time.
This one is complicated. Argentina was under the control of a military Junta at the time, led by Galtieri. There was a lot of civil unrest, and invading the Falklands was the Junta's idea of a quick win to appease the populace and stifle dissent. They thought the UK wouldn't bother to try to recover tiny islands 6000 miles from home.
Actually, most countries thought they'd get away with it, given the immense logistics problems inherent in fighting from 8000 miles away. However, it's difficult for a citizen army with little experience of war-time conditions to defeat highly-trained professionals - if the professionals have the total backing of a furious (and relatively rich) government. I doubt if the UK could do it again, though.
Andrew Keir: the problem was that the Argentine government had no plan for holding the islands against any serious attempt to re-take them. The Argentine assumption was that an occupation would be accepted as a fait accompli. Think about it: the Argentine navy's flagship had been built in 1938 - perhaps fitting that it was sunk by a torpedo based on a 1925 design (last updated 1965). Galtieri threw away so many lives in his attempt to retain power - that's all it was. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARA_General_Belgrano and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_21-inch_torpedo#Mark_VIII

I listened to the BBC radio documentary covering the whole sorry saga from the point of view of the Falkland Islands' radio service - they had no TV at the time. Wild? You have no idea how wild until you've heard the radio announcer - as I recall and faced with two fully equipped troops telling him what to say - explain that the Argentines say they are our friends and then (approximately) "If you're my friend stop pointing your gun at me", and *then* go on to announce that the two Argentines had gone into the corridor and were arguing with each other... Hard to see why there would be any serious tension these days, though.

All other names derive from European colonialism - Malvinas coming into Spanish from the French name; only neither Spain nor France ever successfully colonised the islands. "The nomenclature used by the United Nations for statistical processing purposes is Falkland Islands (Malvinas)" "The common Spanish name for the archipelago, Islas Malvinas, derives from the French Îles Malouines—the name given to the islands by French explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in 1764" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkland_Islands#Etymology

Operation barbarossa was the very definition of poking the bear.
Russia had one major advantage - it was *huge*. It's now on page 1 of every book about military decisions - "Do not invade Russia with your land army". The Russians will retreat until your logistics become impossible, fighting for every scrap of land. It's a valid defence mechanism.
Russia has another military asset. Neither Napoleon or Hitler could defeat General Winter.

It was less the operation, and delaying the invasion a few months to help Italy in Greece, as well as Hitler last minute asking for a 3 prong attack rather than the 2 Prong the generals wanted. So starting late, and diluting forces into more thrusts. Had they launched at their original time and stuck to 2 prongs, they would have taken Moscow (rather than stop 17 miles short), and their other targets.
Cambodia opened fire on Thailand’s civilians (hospital and convenience store) then played victim. Thailand returned the favor by sending out F-16s.
Crazy time to be alive.
Yeah sure, lets not talk about what happened before. The first person who got killed was a cambodian soldier, did he accidently shoot himself? Lets also not talk about the thai military escorting thai tourists into a temple area wich is in cambodia and that is not even disputed by thailand. I agree that attacking civilians is bad, it happened on both sides. Cambodia is by no means a heaven of democracy but thais are not exactly either. I highly doubt that cambodia attacked first and then played victim, why would they? Their army is much, much smaller than the thai army and they are not stupid. I followed that conflict for personal reasons very closely and read newspapers from both sides and it is really not that simple. Both sides made bad mistakes and both sides are to blame. This reads like cambodia decided one sunny day to just attack thailand and that is not true.
Chernobyl. Thought they could push a reactor test too far ended up nuking their own backyard and rewriting the world’s nuclear safety playbook.
They didn't think they could push it too far, there were many problems at play there from a flawed design of the reactor its self to poor training and manuals, and human error at many many levels.
Such is pretty much any man-made disaster in history. The safety regulations only get properly refined when a disaster occurs to spur them. Don't think it was chernobyl, but I know there's a fairly common mechanic in modern reactors where the alarm plays *if nothing is wrong*. The reason? One particular reactor where a fire burnt through the wiring and prevented the alarm from sounding site-wide during the emergency.

Desert Storm.
Saddam at the time thought he was powerful enough to be untouchable, or at the very least to cost more than the Western powers thought it was worth to stop him. He had the 4th largest army in the world at the time, it was expected that any war against him would be protracted and costly.
Then the US-led coalition directly introduced everyone to the difference between a regional power and a superpower. The initial air blitz left almost the entire Iraqi military structure blind, deaf, and isolated in the first 72 hours and from there the ground invasion was a unified force just absolutely rolling over scattered and uncoordinated defenders.
If Desert Storm was so successful, how come they had to go back and do it all over again - against the same regime - 12 years later?
Because the goal of Gulf I was to boot Iraq out of Kuwait, which they did. They were not prepared for an invasion and occupation of Iraq. They weren't 12 years later, either.
