Not just hoarding, but consuming a lot of alcohol, from the looks of those cans. Glad they got to a point where they finally said 'enough'.

I have found the act of organizing a mess often lifts me out of depression. A therapist told me motivation does not come from an external or even interior mental source. It comes from simply starting to do something. Then momentum often helps me continue.

I always had a habit of carrying a plastic bag with me on my walks to pick up trash as I went along. Then I moved to the city where trash is strewn everywhere. I don't collect it anymore because it's so much more gross than in the country and it's just not worth getting a communicable disease.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I think it's great. On the other, I think it's useless. If people who trash, vandalise and destroy stuff are not caught and punished, they'll think there are no consequences for their actions, and they'll go on doing it. What's the point in cleaning if there are so many antisocial people?

I Cleaned My 23 Year Old Favourite Plushie

Before and after cleaning pictures of a stuffed cat, showing a transformation from dirty and matted to clean and fluffy.

I wanted to make this post for anyone who might be worried about cleaning their favourite plushies.
I made the decision to clean mine and as a result, cleaning and bringing plushies back to life became a little hobby of mine. I hand washed her just once to see how she would handle it and gave her a brush for the first time. Then I put her in the washing machine twice and took a few photos while she was drying, whilst also brushing her out as she was drying. I was so emotional seeing her ginger colour coming back and actually being able to see her tabby stripes again

Pro tip/ the best brush to use to strangle plushie fur to make it extra silky soft again is a flea comb for cats, The teeth are SUPER thin and a little sharp so be gentle. It won’t just untangle but it will separate the fur fibers to the point it has that silky softness again. You can get a flea comb for 99 cents at any pet store or big box like Walmart,

"My sister, Laura Christian, started her cleaning service in 2005 in Fort Collins. I would help clean for her business when I would come home for summer breaks, and when I was getting ready to graduate, my sister suggested that I clean houses in Hilo, where I was. I ran that business for 8 years, it was really, really hard. Hiring, managing, all of it," she said, sharing her experience.

When my parents moved in to our antebellum farmhouse in Gettysburg, PA, it needed a lot of renovation. One thing it had was a big hearth in the kitchen, with a large cooking pot very much like this but a tad smaller, hanging from an heavy chain over where the fire would be. It’s how the original owners in the early to mid 19th century would’ve cooked their meals. My parents left it intact, and just closed off the chimney, because it was right next to where our—-wooden—-kitchen table was, and they had a modern stove and oven installed in another part of the kitchen.

This reminds me of the hallways of an apartment building I managed. Old building, low rent - so a lot of stuff was just 'good enough'. I was a resident before I became the resident manager. I talked them into letting another tenant be a part time janitor. He had heart problems so was disabled but he could work inside the building at his own pace. Anyway .... we stripped off YEARS of yellowed wax and waxed over dirt and the floors were so much brighter. (also repainted the walls)

When asked why so many people put off tidying until the last minute, Wilkins said, "Many people dislike cleaning because it can feel like a time-consuming and often overwhelming task, especially when juggling busy schedules. It’s easy to put it off because the immediate results aren’t always visible, and the process can feel repetitive and tedious," he said.

"Additionally, cleaning often requires attention to detail and physical effort, which can be tiring. As a result, many prefer to focus on tasks that feel more rewarding or urgent, leaving cleaning to the last minute. However, I think that once people experience the benefits of a clean and organized space, the motivation to keep up with it often increases!"

I find it interesting that the gas line is rigid. Also that there is no shutoff valve where the gas comes out. My gas appliances have flexible lines between the source pipes (with shut off valves) and the connections to the (water heater, furnace, stove). It allows for some adjustment of position as well as minimizing stress on the coupling from vibrations. I'm wondering if this is a geographical thing (like how they do it in some country) or a "its a really old install" kind of thing.

Lambert agrees that a chore like cleaning can be highly overwhelming if a person is trying to complete it all at once. "If you can, set your family up on a recurring cleaning schedule with your local cleaning service, this will not only help your relationship, but also help to make sure you're living in a clean space, you just need to maintain your things! If you need help with decluttering or organizing, I suggest hiring an organizer first, then the house cleaner can come in and do a really great deep clean," she recommends.

If you are ever trying to shine silver save yourself time and your silver by using aluminum foil water (warm is best) and baking soda. The baking soda acts as an electrolyte and causes the silver tarnish which silver sulfide to release the sulfur and bond with the aluminum making aluminum sulfide. This method does not abrade like abrasive polish or strip the silver like acid based silver cleaners. I just removed the sulfur from the tarnish and turns the silver sulfate back to silver.

Something else that can make tidying up less of a hassle is breaking the tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, says Wilkins. "Instead of tackling everything at once, focus on one area at a time, like a room or surface."

Another tip he has is to use the right tools and cleaning products to complete the job. "Microfiber cloths, for example, are great for dusting and wiping surfaces without leaving residue. Regular maintenance, like wiping down high-touch areas daily, can prevent buildup and make deep cleaning less overwhelming," he adds.

"Lastly, always clean from top to bottom, starting with dusting and ending with floors, so dirt and debris don’t fall on areas you've already cleaned. These strategies can save time and effort while keeping your space consistently clean."

Lambert emphasizes the importance of cleaning more often and having a schedule for it (for example, doing 10-15 minutes of tasks every evening).

"Simple things to keep up with daily include washing dishes, wiping counters, wiping down the stove for grease after cooking, and throwing away any trash. Then you can add in high dusting one night or dusting surfaces another night. Make sure to include the toilets at least once a week, showers can be once every other week, as well as scrubbing the stove, backsplash, and hood!"

And some scrubbing on the bottom and sides. That slimy c**p does build up. They probably drained this pool, scrubbed it out, then refilled it with fresh clean water that was then treated with the proper amount of chlorine. Daily cleaning will keep it from getting like this again (there are robot pool cleaners that can do it automatically). If the owners can’t do it themselves, they can have a pool service do it for them. They can also properly cover it when the owners want to close it down if it gets too chilly to swim.

3 1/4 c water, 1/2 c rubbing alcohol, squirt of dawn dish soap and optional essential oil choice(the alcohol smell is a bit strong). This seems to cut soap scum pretty good for me. I have to use something else occasionally because of the hard water here.

I let the vinegar and detergent sit, then add the baking soda which yes, reacts with the vinegar but at that point it's the abrasiveness of the baking soda you need rather than it's pH value. I use detergent and baking soda for cleaning often. My brothers a vinegar user.

I wish more IT folks would take more care when installing new computers and stuff. Be aware of the tangle of wires you’re making, and try to straighten them up and make them neater. A neater and more organized office is way more pleasant to work in than one that looks like a garbage heap. Easier to keep clean too.

As much as I understand the reasons people let things get that dirty and not clean them, the whole point of a clear window in the door to an oven is to be able to see inside the oven without having to open the door and lose the heat in the oven.

build a nice hot camp fire and chuck them in until they are red and ashy. Pull them out and let cool. Scrub with steel wool to remove leftover ash and rust, oil and put it into a hot oven for an hour. Oil again and wipe every bit off you can. it'll look like the after pix.

For rust, soak in molasses and water. It's the gentlest method and redeposits the iron back to the skillet. Takes a couple days. It turns the rust into a black slime that easily washes away. reseason immediately as it will be raw iron. Mix is simply molasses until the water looks like strong black coffee. For quick and dirty on cheap cast iron, soak for a few hours in household vinegar.

This. I don't understand how some people never think to wipe down the handles of cabinets/drawers/doors when it would be so easy to keep them clean with a quick wipe every now and then. You don't even need to do it every week, once a month or every couple of months and the smudges still come off without scrubbing

You know what? Not only did they work hard, but this was likely a client request. Just because shrubs got removed hardly means this is lifeless and ugly. It absolutely still supports a ton of life and I'm not too worried about biodiversity in someone's 8x20 backyard. Way to s**t on someone's effort.

I’m no fan of boring and colorless lawns. They may have other plans for this space, and just needed it cleared first. I would’ve left quite a bit of the best of what was there, well, there. I just would’ve cleaned out any trash thrown in there, and any mess that could’ve harbored dangerous pests, or an overabundance of pests that could’ve ended up inside the house and made a huge mess inside. Especially if I had kids or pets, who could be hurt by anything dangerous—-or sick or infectious—-hiding in that tangle. Not to mention it could be a fire hazard, so neatening it up would be a good idea.

Before And After Of My Moms A Bathroom

Before-after-cleaning pictures: a bathtub with dirt and grime transformed to a clean, white surface.

I was told I should post the before and after pics in a separate post lol, so here it is: Based on some suggestions, I did four rounds of cleaning, it definitely took ALOT of patience.
    1. toilet bowl cleaner, that I made sure was thoroughly covering the tub by lightly scrubbing it all over it. I let it sit for 15-20 minutes, scrub hard with steelwool. Rinse Barkeepers friend powder and with the same brand gel, I made it into a little paste that I coated the whole tub with, let it sit for 45 minutes and then scrubbed, rinse. This got almost all of it.
    2. CLR, thoroughly spread around the walls and let sit for 5-7 minutes, scrub, rinse
    3. one last deep scrub with vinegar, elbow grease and a lot of cussing and fussing because my back locked up bent over the tub at this point.

After rinsing things VERY thoroughly to avoid making chlorine gas, you can set some strong ventilation and spray that all down with a 50/50 water/bleach solution and it'll get rid of almost all those dark spots. Leave it to sit for about 20 minutes, rinse with hot water. Make sure you do not mix the bleach with vinegar, CLR, or ammonia

Learning all kinds of cleaning tips will make your future partner so very happy. Believe me. My husband was a bachelor well into his thirties when he married me. He said if you’re single long enough, even a bachelor will get sick and tired of living in a garbage heap and learn how to clean up. Same with cooking. Convenience food (heat and eat) is full of preservatives and processed foods, and takeout/eating out gets expensive. Eventually a man will learn how to cook, for his health AND his wallet. Of course, there are exceptions who will always live in their own funk, but most sentient men will learn how to cook and clean for themselves—-and that’s when they will be their most attractive to potential partners.

Does thick bleach mean that you should put a good amount of it in the pan or do they make a bleach that is less watery and more gel like?

For anyone who may have burnt food on pots, bleach will remove it in seconds. Just remember to clean it REALLY well afterwards. 👍

Try dishwasher pre rinse and leave for half an hour - may need to be done a couple of times, but it works (but don't use with teflon coated pans)

It's pyrex. You can spray it with oven cleaner, leave it for an hour, then wipe it off with a sponge instead of scrubbing.

I find a little scrubbing with the scratch pad side of the kitchen sponge is still necessary to get rid of the really hard-baked bits.

Deep Cleaning The Floor, So Satisfying

Before and after cleaning pictures of a herringbone brick floor showing noticeable contrast in cleanliness and color.

I am deep cleaning the floor, which has only been surface mopped since we moved in. This does not get rid of the perma-grime. So I've done a full surface strip. The top bit is perma-grime, the bottom bit is the stripped floor. Now I know what the floor looks like. Only another 900sq ft to go!

STIs are such magnificent cars. I have an '01 Volkswagen Eurovan that I inherited after my mom bought the van and then found out that installing a wheelchair ramp would be too expensive. I have always wanted to own something like an STI or even a Shelby, but the van still runs and I have two large-breed dogs XD I say pull the trigger on the '19 STI!

Why would you clean a mouse pad

    Data1001

Your mouse will stop gliding smoothly over a dirty mouse pad, which will make the simple act of moving your cursor around on the screen a bit frustrating. And if you've got a very old mouse (the kind with a ball instead of a laser), you also need to open up the mouse and clean the gunk inside every so often, so the ball keeps moving easily.
