Designing a product, ad, or building is far more difficult of a challenge than you might think. Sure, you could argue that human beings are instinctively artistic and love aesthetics, but the sad truth is that there are far (far!) too many design fails out there. I’m not going to lie, sometimes they keep me awake at night. Thinking about them is both hilarious and terrifying at the same time. And the most powerful pics tend to haunt you for weeks and sometimes months at a time. Good design, why are you so rare?

One of the best places to find some outstanding examples of double-plus-ungood designs is this subreddit right here which shames and pokes fun at them for our amusement. Have a look through some of the best (worst?) design disasters that they featured recently. Remember to upvote the ones that you loved to hate the most and I’d absolutely love to hear which of these were your (least) favorite!

Pssst, Pandas, we know how much you love looking at epic design fails and aesthetic apocalypses, so we cordially invite you to check out Bored Panda’s earlier posts about them after you’re done enjoying and criticizing this list. You’ll find the articles here, here, and here.

Inaccessible design is so common and it wouldn't take much thought to change it

Or much effort either. They could attach an add-on ramp now—-temporarily—-then redo the whole thing as a concrete ramp later, when the budget allows.

Yeah, a great way to trap kids in wheel chairs who will have to yell for help...they won’t even be able to turn around and take the added off-ramp! Jumping Jesus, this is diabolical! Disabled kid yelling Help Me! What a great look! 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

This is illegal in the US. The ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) states that "covered entities" must provide a way for people with wheelchairs, walkers and crutches to enter. Source, me...and the ADA.

It is, you're right. I just wish it were actually enforced. As a part-time wheelchair user myself (chronic illness), I can't even begin to explain how inaccessible EVERYTHING is! I really didn't get it until I experienced it.

I my local mall, they have a wheelchair access with heavy doors that need to be opened to the outside manually, followed by one step, then a ramp, and then another step. It feels as if someone intentionally tried to make it as inaccessible as possible.

This looks like the school I work at. The door literally next to the elevator has no wheel chair access button, where it would make the most sense. They have to go to the other side of the building to access the building, then wheel back to where they started to get on the elevator. Smh.

My family and I went to a rest stop to use the facilities. It was at the top of a hill. You park at the bottom and walk up a lot of steps. There was a handicap stall in the bathroom. It looked like it'd never been used. We saw no ramp or anything to help a disabled person get UP to the top of the hill of steps, to use the facilities.

While the button is in a horrible spot (difficult to press and turn with an outward opening door), I can assure you there is a ramp outside of frame. The code is rigidly enforced when it comes to ADA.

If he can't reach the button then he can't reach the door either, so how is it in any way accessible? I'd assume, if it hadn't been entered here, that you could actually roll the chair along from the left off-screen...

That's not ADA compliant and would never pass code in America. 1: this was taken on purpose, 2: Building isn't open yet or 3: this is not in America.

The law requires access, but not access to the access. We had to remodel our business. We have five bathrooms, four for the workers, and one that was, originally, in the owner's office. Well, we turned the "owner's office" into a break room for the employees and a small office for my husband. The bathroom was off his office and NEVER used. Well, the handicap Nazis [and they are] came in and said, "you must make ALL the bathrooms wheelchair accessible. We pointed out that NO ONE used that bathroom and all the other bathrooms WERE wheelchair accessible. Nope, we had to make the unused one accessible. 75,000 bucks later, [because we had to make structural changes to the building] the unused bathroom was now wheelchair accessible. Then we discovered the door INTO my husband's office was not wide enough for a wheelchair. Didn't matter, ONLY the bathroom had to be wheelchair accessible. We saved another 250,000 dollars not having to make that door wheelchair accessible.

I'm an Architect - was part of the team developing the original ADA during the Raygun Recession. Hawai'i was the only place in the country at the time that was busy for buildings. I was also a member of the building department Accessibility Review Committee, chair of the local AIA Building Codes committee for 10 years. If the building required structural changes to make it accessible, it was exempt for that portion. If there were other accessible bathrooms, that last one didn't have to be accessible. Even today, private office bathrooms are NOT required to be accessible. The ramp/call button issue is a whole separate thing. Awful. No excuse for that one. I was doing a 2nd floor renovation to a bar that only had access by stairs - no elevator. The idiot plan reviewer insisted we make the restrooms wheelchair accessible. I went over his head to the head of the building department - the head also thought the plan reviewer was an idiot.

The subreddit that makes fun of bad designs is a goliath on Reddit with a whopping 2.6 million members. The online group has been active since January 2011 and has become a true pillar of design discussion online, ranging from the silly and fun to the in-depth and serious.

Over the last two years alone, the subreddit grew by nearly a million members from 1.7 million adoring fans. Back then, they were getting 2 million page views per month. That’s proof enough of their popularity.

We might intuitively understand what good design is, however, it’s a real challenge to get the design just right. It’s not just about beauty or function, however (though these are vital, too!). The idea of good design goes deeper still.

For instance, researcher Don Norman believes that the essence of design is… communication. “Design is really an act of communication, which means having a deep understanding of the person with whom the designer is communicating,” he writes in ‘The Design of Everyday Things.’

According to Norman, design doesn’t have to be complicated. He argues that usability is just as important as aesthetics. Or, in other words, the product has to be functional and useful, not just a pretty thing to look at.

Norman explains that product design cannot ignore the needs of users. In the book, he argues that good, usable design is entirely possible, not just a dream conjured up by idealists.

“The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time,” he writes that some products are able to satisfy customers’ needs while others only end up frustrating them.
