50 Times People Encountered Such Bad Designs, They Just Had To Share (New Pics)
Designing a product, ad, or building is far more difficult of a challenge than you might think. Sure, you could argue that human beings are instinctively artistic and love aesthetics, but the sad truth is that there are far (far!) too many design fails out there. I’m not going to lie, sometimes they keep me awake at night. Thinking about them is both hilarious and terrifying at the same time. And the most powerful pics tend to haunt you for weeks and sometimes months at a time. Good design, why are you so rare?
One of the best places to find some outstanding examples of double-plus-ungood designs is this subreddit right here which shames and pokes fun at them for our amusement. Have a look through some of the best (worst?) design disasters that they featured recently. Remember to upvote the ones that you loved to hate the most and I’d absolutely love to hear which of these were your (least) favorite!
Pssst, Pandas, we know how much you love looking at epic design fails and aesthetic apocalypses, so we cordially invite you to check out Bored Panda’s earlier posts about them after you’re done enjoying and criticizing this list. You’ll find the articles here, here, and here.

The subreddit that makes fun of bad designs is a goliath on Reddit with a whopping 2.6 million members. The online group has been active since January 2011 and has become a true pillar of design discussion online, ranging from the silly and fun to the in-depth and serious.
Over the last two years alone, the subreddit grew by nearly a million members from 1.7 million adoring fans. Back then, they were getting 2 million page views per month. That’s proof enough of their popularity.

I previously spoke to a member of the subreddit’s moderator team to learn a bit more about their community. One of the mods told me previously that the “original motivation” of the subreddit was to “point out” horrible designs.
“Nowadays, most subscribers probably come here for entertainment. However, it is common to have meaningful discussion here on why or why not something is [bad] design,” the mod told Bored Panda.

We might intuitively understand what good design is, however, it’s a real challenge to get the design just right. It’s not just about beauty or function, however (though these are vital, too!). The idea of good design goes deeper still.
For instance, researcher Don Norman believes that the essence of design is… communication. “Design is really an act of communication, which means having a deep understanding of the person with whom the designer is communicating,” he writes in ‘The Design of Everyday Things.’

According to Norman, design doesn’t have to be complicated. He argues that usability is just as important as aesthetics. Or, in other words, the product has to be functional and useful, not just a pretty thing to look at.
Norman explains that product design cannot ignore the needs of users. In the book, he argues that good, usable design is entirely possible, not just a dream conjured up by idealists.
“The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time,” he writes that some products are able to satisfy customers’ needs while others only end up frustrating them.

Much More Convenient!
Well...if you actually think about it...its not. The scanning leads you to the mall's website, which shows their hours. However, the more traffic a webpage gets, the more advertisements they can get and the more money they make through web traffic. Every scan counts as a view. It is a "smart" way of getting large amounts of views to a website that otherwise would probably go underutilized.
Load More Replies...If this is recent, then they've probably been changing their hours of operation frequently and just got tired of updating the sign each time.
All of these are just a subtle way of telling poor people you're not welcome. No smart phone ooooh no menu or even hours for you.
You know i hate these! I'm carrying an older smartphone (not all smartphones can read that) and i was so frustrated the two times i went to a restaurant cause it was impossible for me to see the menu! I understand the necessity but some people cannot use that!
Load More Replies...During COVID, the mall hours probably changed every few days as restrictions changed. They saved paper by not printing new signs each time.
Thats what the sign says, that mall haour may vary.
Load More Replies...Yes hours should be posted printed out. Menus I’m okay with this, but post your hours please. Think smarter, not harder.
having customers scan a barcode with a device they already own IS smarter than changing 2 dozen signs every time the pandemic changes your hours.
Load More Replies...This is very common during the pandemic. The restrictions comes without much notice, and changes often, which makes it too wasteful to change the signs every time.
What if ur some elderly person without a smart phone. Not every dam thing needs to be an app or online.
Due to covid and staffing shortages, this is smart because I'm sure the hours are ever changing.
No. I won't scan it. Just print the hours on paper, you pea-brained æsshole
What if the mall hours change? What if it's closed for a holiday? I actually like this apposed to switching the sign every time something changes.
Store and restaurant hours may vary, so pointing you to the website where the information can be changed and updated makes sense. Another option would be to have a digital board that can be updated via bluetooth and a phone app or something, although that could be pricey.
Well, they want to get people to their website + they can easily update open hours.
"store and restaurant hours may vary"???? Yet, you want us to scan? Why?
So they can bombard your phone with constant annoying ads
Load More Replies...Scanned the QR code out of sheer curiosity. The mall has different closing times on different days of the week. This makes sense, also because the times would be changing constantly due to gradual lifting of lockdown guidelines.
Hours can change, this sign needs not to be changed every time they do.
It states that the store and restaurant hours vary, ...this would be a great solution to mess a sign would be
I've read about people wanting QR codes on their website to take you to their website.
I guess next generation of kids will be able to read QR codes fluently.
You are not allowed to use our store if you don't have a smartphone.
for a certain segment of the population...it's things like this that put the 'tard' into the phrase 'libtard'...and as one? sadly, i agree. this is not a good look for someone wanting to look particularly smart...
I had a similar thought a month ago when visiting Chili's for the first time in at least a dozen years. Use your phone to scan the QR code on the dessert menu and then you can browse to our menu on your phone. Yep. That's much more efficient than just handing me a f***ing menu.
This is the mall where I live. Their hours are posted as well on the outside of the doors. Yes this exists but it isnt the "only way". Also there are only a handful of stores left (even pre pandemic) and most have exterior entrances. As a local I have my own opinions on our mall and how it's handled things but this is a cheap shot and not accurate. It is convenient for ever changing stores and hours but like I said, the other hours are there too.
According to pew research, 85% of people (in US) have them. Guess who businesses selling stuff are going to cater to.
Load More Replies...They probably change them often and don't want to re-print it. But wel...
Almost everyone has a smart phone and it means they can change it at different times of the year without a new poster at each door?
Not everyone has a smartphone and not all smartphones can read that! I have an old one and it doesn't read the QR code
Load More Replies...Even someone that has the tech to pull out and scan wouldn’t have the time yet alone someone that’s not tech savvy
