According to Gallup's State of the American Manager report, half of all employees in the US have quit jobs at some point in their careers in order to get away from their bosses. (The figures are similar or even higher for workers in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.)

And the subreddit r/ChoosingBeggars has plenty of examples that illustrate this figure.

While some may find them amusing, the reality is that having a bad superior can be mentally and emotionally exhausting; it's essential for employers to recognize the importance of treating their staff with respect and fairness to maintain a healthy and productive work environment.

This should be something more along the lines of: “When the weather is hot please ensure you remain hydrated with the water and Gatorade provided for free at your local offices. If additional breaks are needed to accommodate the working conditions please coordinate with your area supervisor. Overtime has been approved to accommodate the changes in schedule necessary to ensure the welfare of our staff. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay well!” Haha…never… but doesn’t that sound actually reasonable??

I work at a certain "Dollar Sergeant." Last Summer, our AC went out for weeks. At one point, we recorded a temp of 110°F in the store, in sticky Southern humidity. DM's response? "If it's hotter inside than outside, just prop the door open." How about you come down here and prop the door open yourself, Derrick! Corporate response was emailing us a flyer to print out about the importance of staying hydrated. What a f***ing joke.

Last summer we had a heat wave that lasted a month. I was working in a bakery. The thermometer/hygrometer on the wall next to the kettle regularly registered 115F and 85% humidity. My boss followed OSHA guidelines to the letter. When it's that hot you are not just allowed but REQUIRED to take a 15m break every hour. I was still suffering from heat exhaustion once or twice a week.

No punctuation, all in upper-case and misspelled "off". If that is an officially sanctioned message I would be surprised but it is possible. My assumption would be someone in a minor position of power is mentally impaired and sent that without considering the implications.

I worked for a company with the same name as a rainforest in South America for a solid year. I thought the summer would be far better than the winter--it was not. It was much worse. The back of the truck was like an oven, they monitored how long you were at every stop so if you needed to get water or go to the bathroom or whatever, you were dinged for taking too long. It was absolutely miserable. I was so grateful for the folks who had small coolers of water set out for the drivers during the summer. I took a gallon of water with every day and still ran out on smoldering days!

Used to work for a smaller local courier company. One day I was on my route and slipped down 1/2 dozen frozen wooden porch steps. Cried out in pain when I hit bottom. Took me quite a while to 1/2 walk/1/2 crawl back to vehicle due to severe pain in back. Called in on radio to say what happened and they told me to finish my route before coming in (about 30 more stops). I said hell no and returned to base. Went to doctor afterwards against company advice (uh hello? Workers comp?) By then majority of back was beyond black & blue, mostly black. Fractured 2 bones and bruised ribs. Man, I was on like 3 bottles of vicodin after that. Not fun.

According to the team at the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an organization comprised of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs 45 and younger, the biggest red flags to watch out for in a manager are:

  • Micromanagement;
  • A one-size-fits-all approach to management;
  • Doesn’t lead by example;
  • Lack of empathy;
  • Focused on blame, rather than solutions and support;
  • Uses their team as pawns for their own success;
  • Lack of focus;
  • Takes credit for others’ work;
  • No respect for employees;
  • Little to no self-awareness;
  • A sense of entitlement rather than a sense of duty;
  • Expects all employees to be like them.

According to data collected by Zenger Folkman, a professional services firm providing leadership development, quiet quitting is usually less about an employee’s willingness to work harder and more creatively, and more about a manager's ability instead.

Their researchers looked at data gathered since 2020 on 2,801 managers, who were rated by 13,048 direct reports (on average, each manager was rated by five direct reports), and compared two things:

  • Employees' ratings of their manager's ability to "Balance getting results with a concern for others' needs."
  • Employees' ratings of the extent to which their "work environment is a place where people want to go the extra mile."

The research term they gave for those willing to give extra effort was called “discretionary effort.” Its effect on organizations can be profound: if someone has 10 direct reports and they each give 10% additional effort, the net result of that additional effort is increased productivity.

"We found that the least effective managers have three to four times as many people who fall in the “quiet quitting” category compared to the most effective leaders," co-founders of Zenger Folkman, Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman, wrote in Harvard Business Review.

For comparison, those who were rated the highest at balancing results with relationships saw 62% of their direct reports willing to give extra effort, while only 3% were quietly quitting.

Instead of focusing on themselves and making ridiculous demands, managers should try to promote open and honest dialogues.

"The most important factor is trust," Zenger and Folkman highlighted. "When we analyzed data from more than 113,000 leaders to find the top behavior that helps [them] balance results with their concern for team members, the number one behavior that helped was trust. When direct reports trusted their leader, they also assumed that the manager cared about them and was concerned about their well-being."

Let's say that this ONLY requires 8 hours a day... a typical 40-hour work-week. You'd be making $13.75/hr for the privilege of being a parent to an adult baby who can't even be arsed to pack their own suitcase or organize their personal items.

Their research has linked trust to three behaviors. First, having positive relationships with all of your direct reports, then consistency, and finally expertise. "By building a trusting relationship with all of your direct reports, the possibility of them quietly quitting dissipates significantly," Zenger and Folkman highlighted.

"The approach leaders took to drive for results from employees in the past is not the same approach we use today. We are building safer, more inclusive, and positive workplaces, and we must continue to do better."

I made $14 an hour being a veterinary receptionist who also was expected to clean, sanitize after parvo exposure, veterinary assistant work including restraining, assisting in euthanasia, assisting in cremations, moving deceased animals, helping to bring in severely injured/dying animals, dealing with either irate or emotionally distressed owners on my own, getting bit-twice in the face, getting verbally berated by the practice owner, having my manager essentially tell me I'm just a body and don't matter, and having a complete lie made up about me by said manager that resulted in my immediate termination even though I'd never had a single infraction on my record. All of which without training or even appreciation. People get into veterinary medicine because they care but places like this steal that compassion and drive right out of you.
