Baby photoshoots might seem like a walk in a park, but that can not be farther from the truth. Yes, we agree that babies are cute and adorable, but try to put your snot-nosed, shrieking and wriggling bundle of joy into the right position for a cute baby picture. Suddenly, a walk in a park turns into a ride on the highway to hell.
And Pinterest with the gorgeous ideas and perfectly executed photos of cute babies might trick you into taking the splendidly staged baby pictures yourself. But it's easy to forget the amount of hard work, good luck, digital wizardry and skill that goes into creating a perfect photograph, especially when the subject is babies.

Please remember that these pro shots are done as a composite, it is NOT safe to have your newborn balance their head on their hands and can easily result in a mild to severe injury.
I live near a huge hospital university. A LOT of my patients are doctors at all levels. I have been posing babies like this for 17 years, and always talk to my doctor clients about it as I'm shooting it. Every single one of them says they don't see anything wrong with it, as long as it is done correctly, and safely. They say, 'heck, the baby just squeezed through a birth canal a few days ago! That's no where near as bad!' Yes, you need to learn to do it safely...but not everyone does them as composites. Me included.

This should only be attempted by professionals. This could have really hurt the baby
I've read somewhere that this "pose" is actually two poses photo-shopped together, and that trying to imitate it without the support can hurt the little ones. That said, I love the "failed" photo more than the original.
This is actually a composite shot when taken by a photographer as its really dangerous to actually stage with a newborn. Fail indeed

Been photographing newborns for 17 years and have NEVER done this as a composite.
I tried to do a shoot of my first born once, when she was this size, and her little fist was closed to sweetly......except for the middle finger which was standing straight up. At least this kid wasn't flipping anyone off.
It's irresponsible to have these composite shots that people think are real and therefore can actually be done with their own newborns. It looks so cute - people ate going to copy it :(

idk, some of these border child abuse. Why insist on taking a pic if your kid is visibly upset?
Most of these parents waited too long. You need to do this in the first... not quite sure...six? weeks, when they are still sleeping so much and so deeply. And that's why these are all done by professional photographers who are not the parents. Parents are wayyyy too tired those first weeks to stage a complicated photoshoot. :-) Fantastic post, though. I really laughed a lot!
What's with the food-fails? The last three were inappropriate for this site. Sad to say it happens too often.
Everyone needs to realize that the first ones are taken by professional photographers that took hundreds of pictures to get just the right one. They weren't taken by your smart phone in your kitchen!

Oh I don't like the hammock or the bowl of gumballs. Those are awful. You stuffed your baby in a bowl with a bunch of rock hard balls. Look at the feet! No wonder the babe is upset!
A lot of the 'sleeping babies' are actually dolls ... Not sure why a parent would think an actual baby would work lol ... it's a doll for a reason.
