50 Posts From ‘Anti Consumption’ That Show Exactly What’s Wrong With The World (New Pics)
In Fight Club, Brad Pitt’s character, Tyler Durden, delivered a powerful line: “The things you own end up owning you.” The main message is that many define themselves through material things, whether branded clothes, shiny gadgets, unneeded furniture, or expensive jewelry.
Consumerism has been a hot-button issue for decades, and many people are going against it. One group is the Anticonsumption subreddit, which has nearly 800,000 members as of this posting.
We’ve collected a handful of posts that express disapproval against all forms of materialism. See which ones you’re able to relate to the most.

Load More Replies...This is a perfect example of a good but non-scalable solution. Banana leaves are produced locally and in limited quantity annually without damaging the tree. It's basically a leftover product, and availability roughly matches the demand, keeping the price low. Scaling up would mean either planting more trees (overproducing bananas and driving down its economic viability), overexploiting the trees, or displacing availability from local consumers to more high-paying ones, effectively negating access to the resource to the communities that use it and adding extra environmental impact from logistics.
Even though these are made with banana leaves, which don't grow everywhere this seems like something that could be done in other places. Not, on a large scale basis like grocery store, obviously. But, for farmers markets and stuff. Most places around the world have things to make baskets from.
Because that's what they have, so they use it. If you want to change the world, don't compare the world to this one tiny little spot on the global map. You need to think locally for things like this. Every area has their own unique qualities, so please don't Ever compare us/them again. It's just foolish.

Move to an European country. I have many problems with my country but public transit and walkable cities AREN'T one of them.
I had to move from a big house to an apartment near the subway to not have to have a car. My new place is small compared to the old house, but I have 3 supermarkets in a 1km radio, a pet shop and a veterinary clinic. I can do everything just walking. My life improved maybe 80%.
We live above a subway station and work is 10meter from one ... I hit the public transport jackpot
Load More Replies...All those things would be great, but I still want self-driving cars. Private cars are never going to disappear and self-driving cars have got to be better than cars driven by drunks, idiots, tired/angry/careless/impatient/arrogant people. Also worth noting that the issue of cities being built around cars seems to be more of a problem in the US than other places (I'm basing this on what I've read, not actual experience), where cities are still walkable and/or have usable public transport systems.
OP must not be an American. In the EU the '15 min. Cities' is an 'urban planning concept in which most daily necessities and services, such as work, shopping, education, healthcare, and leisure can be easily reached by a 15-minute walk, bike ride, or public transit ride from any point in the city." (from Wikipedia). In the US, this would require demolishing and rebuilding entire cities.
if op is American, they should know that won’t be possible. The US is huge and rural, cars are pretty much the best option
but public transport in cities can and should be better

That was during Covid, and not entirely the fault of Brussels Airlines. The Lufthansa Group, of which BrA is part of, had in total 18000 empty or near-empty flights. Reason was the international rule of loosing slots if less than 80%, later reduced to 50%, of the slots were used. https://www.thebulletin.be/brussels-airlines-runs-3000-empty-flights-maintain-airport-slots
Sounds like that international rule is the cause of the problem. Idk what the solution is.

Meanwhile, the U.S who accounts for 4% of the human population, is responsible for 15% of global emissions.....30% of those emissions (4.5% of global emissions) are from individuals driving their cars. Just because you can point to something worse, doesn't mean you are doing well. Stop looking for excuses to make even less of an effort than you already do.

My old person trait is that customer satisfaction means the customer is actually satisfied. Products, services, and food are so horrible nowadays. I asked a cashier to please not put my orange juice in the same bag as my flour. She shrugged her shoulders, and said, "I bag em how I bag em. If you don't like it, bag em yourself."
My old person trait is that I think you should get a manual on how to run a product/program with purchase. Companies think we already know how to do all this!!!!

Over Production Of The Wrong Stuff?
Bicycles and aparment buildings are the most efficient forms of transport and housing. And yet car companies and drivers encourage and use violence against cyclists, and the construction industry wants to make EVERYTHING illegal to build except single detached homes that sell for $1 million each.
well universal health, public transit and affordable houses make not as much profit like cheap produced trash sold million times ( plus the clients data) capitalism is no longer a support for a trading society but a system to feed the greed of the unsatiable rich ones
Capitalism functions based on the will (and spending) of the masses. How many malls, chains and independently owned shops have we all watched fade into a vague memory? That hasn't happened because of some grand conspiracy, it's not the fault of "the rich"....it's because you, (yes you!) and countless others have opted to order everything off the internet and have it delivered straight to your door. Mostly from amazon! It's because so many people, when given the choice between wearing something they already own, or getting some new piece of fast fashion garbage....they'll choose the cheap PoS 9 times out of 10. They opt for eating food that's slowly killing them, over anything healthy because the death nuggets are in higher quantity. People order cheap plastic $hit from China, that they do not need, to "solve" problems they do not have because "it's cute" "it's cheap" "it was in my recommendations"
There are only 5 communist nations on the planet, the rest of them are capitalist, with socialist undertones...even the U.S. Yet capitalism is used as a catch all excuse/justification/defense for every societal failure in the U.S. It's not the system, it's the society, the people. The collective consequences of individual's actions. During Covid, it took a few months for the price of oil to go NEGATIVE. Oil companies actually had to pay people to store their products...it was exactly the same outcome that so many malls, stores, and independently owned businesses have succumbed to over the past couple of decades, and it should have been a wake up call to the masses about how their collective actions can impact the world in much more significant ways....but instead, everyone just shuffled back into doing what they always did, as soon as they were able to....Everyone needs to stop externalizing everything, and look at themselves, and those around them.

Just about any item or service you pay for now feels like a huge ripoff.
capitalism is both responding to and creating market demand. Public transit isn't as lucrative as "it's not just your car it's your freedom" car sales. Same with fast fashion. No one is running around saying "wow this 1998 wool sweater is just as great now as it was today!" etc. and so forth.
How can you vote your way out of that when your only choices are from the same pro capitalist parties ?

Then there is the question of, “What drives a person to purchase a product or service?” Survey Sparrow gave several factors, perception being one of them. It is the manner in which a consumer interprets information about what they intend to buy.
“A consumer who has had a positive experience with a particular brand may have a more favorable perception of that brand than a consumer who has not had any experience with the brand.”

It should be a law that anything with a rechargeable battery, can be opened easily in order to replace that battery. I'm staring at my old Clarisonic facial scrubber, the battery is dead and won't keep a charge. I have batteries for it, I simply have to mechanically slice the unit open to replace them, then use super glue to put it back together. It'll never be waterproof again though. Designs like this should be criminal. Phones are the worst.
How can you prove it? And the cells there have removable batteries?
That's precisely the problem. It's the consumer who has to prove the intention so it's an impossible law to apply... but people are soooo pleased now !

Lawn Hating Post Beware
better for the eyes and safety, a vehicle that exits the road will be braked more gently in vegetation and tall grass than on flat ground
I converted my lawn to wildflowers and clovers and creeping thyme. I love it. And even if my neighbors had a problem with it, it's protected and I can't be forced to mow it.
Good for you! That sounds really awesome! Plain grass lawns are ugly as hell and such a waste of resources. I rent an apartment but if I had a home I’d do the same, get ride if he grass and plant wildflowers for the bees. Some people (especially HOAs) can be so painfully small-minded and easily forget that we’re a part of nature too.
Load More Replies...Mowing green spaces is very often just dumb, especially in summer - the heat and rain free days will dry the stubbles very quickly, heat the earth, destroys places for animals und Humans are suffering from all of this too. Also, who wants to see short cut but rown lawn instead of long and diverse green?
Bee Pasture (Méhlegelő) is a concept in Hungary (and in many other countries) where urban green spaces (e.g. parts of parks, dividing strips between roads, etc.) are first mown down in a year just after the seeding season (practically end of summer) to allow bees and other insects to live there.
YES!! We have that! I love it! I even bought a fold-out map kind of thing with the names of all the plants that could conceivably grow in those green strips and I can now name 6 kinds of plants...

The grass we have was planted for livestock to graze on. That's why it's fast growing and tough. There is no reason for it otherwise.

These obscenely large abominations have become very popular with a certain type of person here in Australia. It's awful, because none of our infrastructure is designed with "suburban tank for perpetual manbabies" in mind. They block streets, take up multiple parking spots and are a dangerous nightmare on the road.
Pickup truck drivers in Southern Ontario tend to drive aggressively and most of them are often tow truck drivers racing to the scene of an accident hoping to get to the scene of the accident first before someone else does. All while disregarding the traffic laws and the safety of other drivers.

Do We The People See This For How Truly Messed Up It Is?
And remember : the people who discovered how to make insuline gave their patent away for 1$ to help people. But compagnies managed to patent the production process in itself, and that's how we T1 diabetics get killed in the name of profit.
Every time someone dies bc they can't afford life saving meds, big pharma should be taken to trial for murder.
What is terrible about this news is not only that the groom died because of cheap insulin, but also that he wanted to spend more than he could afford on the wedding, and that caused his death. BTW in Hungary, a daily insulin dose (at 40 E/die) is like $0.5, an 1500E penfill costs cca. $8.
As Proffessor Robin Feldman wrote in her book on d**g prices, that a single paragraph change in US regulations would plummet Insulin prices to beween 10-15 dollars. The high price is not profit, but actually costs regarding regulations in the US market that were put there to prevent competetiion, but also caused massive prices.

I Am Not Sure If This Is A "Hot Take" But There Is Literally No Reason Why Anyone *needs* A Private Plane Or Yacht That Cause Literal Tons Of Environmental Damage Unless They Are An Important Essential Official, We Should Legally Ban Them All
Private jet owners should be required to volunteer them for use in emergency aid situations. At their cost. Call it a luxury tax.
This was basically the arrangement that led to the golden age of Transatlantic travels. Government paid for a share of the new ships, in exchange of some recurring service (mail or goods passage) and the right to requisition the ship in case of war. Companies made good revenues, created jobs, invested in local shipbuilding and new technologies were developed quickly due to the shorter pay-back time of investments. Not saying it's a good idea, but thought the parallel would be interesting.

The discussion took a slightly darker turn when talking about materialism. Here’s an analysis by Knox College psychology professor Dr. Tim Kasser.
“We know from research that materialism tends to be associated with treating others in more competitive, manipulative, and selfish ways, as well as with being less empathetic.”

I worked in a supermarket and we used to have plastic cutlery for customers to use with salads etc. A knife, folk and serviette wrapped in plastic wrapping. Then like the good environmentally concerned company they are they got rid of the plastic cutlery and went to wooden. But they had 8 boxes of this plastic cutlery that they put in the staff canteen each box contained a thousand individually wrapped in plastic, plastic cutlery! That was just one shop I'd hate to think what the bigger stores had.
I carry reusable water containers with me wherever I go. I have one for work, one for home, one for travel. I also reuse plastic flatware as much as possible. OK, enough bragging - time to go back into modest mode.

Load More Replies...If you're just talking about seed costs maybe but please can we not make out that farming isn't work? Growing high quality, organic-standard, seasonal vegetables is non-stop labour, highly stressful (when your 5th bed of carrots this year has been devastated by slugs), skillful, intellectually demanding. Compost, pest management systems, water management systems, seeds that may or may not germinate or have mould problems, temperature management systems (polytunnels/greenhouses, that sort of thing), none of that is free and all of it is necessary if you are trying to grow a consistent yield, high-quality crop that replaces the supermarket food system. I encourage everyone to grow whatever food they can no matter how small their space and I agree with "grow food not lawns" but growing food is work and our farmers (and the families that support them!) deserve to have their labour recognised for what it is.
In case it's unclear... "grow a large crop... trade" - that's what farming is!

I love compost bins. I really do! But I am not sure if it's a great thing to share them.... because, let's be honest, most of what people put in there is probably weeds that will not die in a compost pile and then you take from the compost and you are now the "happy" owner of weed seeds that you blend into your soil. And that is how we got an invasive plant in our garden that will take decades to get rid of. Japanese knotweed, I think the English name for it is. So.... do yourself a favour and make your own compost and use your own compost.
that would mean sigificently more water use. if everyone did that, it would be made illegal. especially in places with little water.
Collect more than 55 gallons of rain water. You will get fined. They say you are stealing water that would normally end up in the reservoirs.
That depends on where you live. Our community garden has 5 rain barrels, each over 50 gallons. No one is finding us. Actually, the city brings us compost and mulch.

Excellent perspective. It applies to the cheap housing construction going on all over the US right now. The million dollar cardboard houses being poorly constructed over every spot of land will last maybe 50 years at best before having to be overhauled or demoed. Think about the size of THAT landfill.
In two decades, most of the people who read this will also be in a landfill somewhere.
Um...yeah, and? Can we point out anything -- anything at all -- that doesn't eventually end up throw out, used up, lost, or worn out?
and the issue is? come on, this has been an issue ever since the concept of marketing was invented thousands of years ago.
"Real cost pricing", aka "Pigouvian taxation" - tax all new made or imported materials $0.01 per pound per number of years it takes to biodegrade in a landfill. That cardboard takeout container now costs about half a cent more, but the plastic alternative costs like 25 cents more. Meanwhile recycled materials are free because the tax was already paid. Now there is an economic incentive to reduce, reuse, recycle, or use more environmentally friendly materials

Expect a lot of whinging in news media from entertainment corpo executives about piracy.
I'll say it every time this is brought up. The ads on Prime came from the writer's strike. Once they were forced to pay creators a living wages they had to come up with more money, which either means taking away corporate profits or taking it from consumers. And since corporate profits are sacred, you get ads.
Very short slighted. They could have got a smaller cut now to pay the writers and kept making hoarders of money, but now they are going to lose so much market that the loss is going to be massive and possibly they might have to shut down business
Load More Replies...They all jumped on the streaming bandwagon as if the amount of possible paying subscribers was infinite and the CoViD19 lockdowns would last forever. Now they realize that no, you have a limited amount of people willing to pay to watch your content. But those people have to be lured some way, so they spent ungodly amounts of money to create content to compete with other similar services for an ever shrinking market. And now the huge investments they made to do just that makes almost impossible to pull the plug. Hence, grasping at straws like hiking up prices and advertisements to try to make up for the money pit those services have become for them. They'll implode sooner than later anyway.
I had Amazon Prime and I started thinking of stopping it to save a little money (because I don't buy coffe). Then I told myself I had the right to have that little pleasure and I went to renew it... when they told me I'd have to pay 2 more €/month not to have adds. I deleted Amazon Prime :D

That's both true and not much of a riposte. The consistent failures of both Christianity and Communism to create the societies they promise demonstrates the failure of both philosophies to be robust to human cognitive biases (or human frailties or whatever you want to call it). No: they are super-cheap tents that don't offer meaningful protection from the elements and don't last more than one or two uses. It's like saying cheap Shein clothes can solve the problem of clothing for the homeless, when in reality even the *unused* garments shipped off to Ghana and Chile are too low-quality to be used by recyclers or sold on African markets. These tents are literally unusable, broken rubbish. Even if people didn't abandon them, they would only end up in the bin.
Load More Replies...this is rso stupid if youre old enough to be at a festival you are old enough to clean up after yourself
I never get it..A god tent isn't that cheap, do you just buy a new one every festival season ? Do we really have that much money.? I would spend it to poorer people or like said before to homeless.. or maybe building a cooperation and upcicle it to new festival equipment with some cool branding name..and sell it expensive to the people that already had buyed it years before once little edit: another solution were a fee you get back when you leave the place clean ..just give the spots Registration Numbers and a online booking system
These aren't good tents. They are extremely cheap and break almost immediately. From a purely selfish economic perspective they make sense: a Creamfield's ticket is £240. A beer is £6. A Bacardi and Pepsi is £7. Most of these tents are between £20 and £50 - maybe £10 per person per night, if you use it only once. So cheap! And they're only good for one or two uses, certainly no good for living in. If your only camping is once a year at Creamfields, the use-it-and-junk-it makes economic sense. The single-use festival tent culture needs to die but it won't happen without being banned. Um, yes, I might find this topic a LITTLE triggering.

They are forced to continue moving, and if they don't move fast enough the government puts money toward bulldozers, and dumpsters, and police presence to forcibly remove them, their dwellings, and their belongings. If they're going to outright abandon their stuff, organize it as a donation event where it's advertised that these items will be free to all takers at the end of the event. A step further would be that event coordinators up the price of tickets to pay for rubbish clean up, but as a deposit. If you clean up, you get your deposit back.

For some time now, there has been a law in the EU that requires the lowest price from the last month before the promotion to be placed next to the promotional price.
Which is why the 4-6 weeks leading up to a sale see items have their prices jacked up by 20-40%, then the sale see the price drop by 20% which means you're still paying more than if you had bought the thing 6 weeks before, or two weeks after the "sale"

Before the industrial revolution, there were never shortages of fish, and there was never destruction of rainforests for farming. Before the industrial revolution, there were never more than 700 million people on Earth and no industrialized mining, no use of oil, etc.
wrong. there were shortages of fish, there were destructions of forests for farming, there were oil, and so on.

Am I just a weirdo in that I don't see the big deal with these stupid cups??? I just can't bring myself to throw away that much money on a freaking tumbler, and I am flabbergasted over the fact that a stupid cup has become a status symbol now???
I've used a similar cup....like I always use my cup ..for several years. The sudden 'sexiness' of the Stanley version is...lunacy, really..

This is nothing new. Sadly, this type of bullying has been happening for decades.

I'm not a fan of plastic waste and single use plastic like this, but there are actually a lot of people out there with a wide ranging array of disabilities that this helps out a lot. There are people for whom cutting up stuff like this is either physically painful or physically impossible.
It can be achieved otherwise, with a free cutting service at the grocery store for example, like it's done for cutlery and the likes, and bringing your own container too. And while it's true that a lot of people have a large array of disabilities, I doubt that they are that many to need so much of it.

Saw Someone Share A Pic Of Their Phone, Thought I’d Do The Same
If it works, it works. I drove a Toyota Corolla into the ground, and I plan to do the same with my current set of wheels.
Get a scooter next time. A new one with 150+mpg will cost the same to buy as two payments on a "new" vehicle today. If I were forced back to Canada (where I live I only use public transit), I would only have a scooter. ~IF~ I needed to drive, which I likely wouldn't.

I'll Never Understand Why So Many People (Especially In The States) Are So Vehemently Opposed To Washing Dishes
The beginning of doing the dishes overwhelms me but after i start it gets easier
My partner and I recently threw a dinner party for our friends and only used washable dishes/glasses/silverware. One of the first things someone commented on when seeing the photos is that we should have used disposable items to save ourselves the time it would take to wash everything. >.<
try washing your dishes manually for a month. then youll know real quick.
I don't have a dishwasher. I'd kill for a dishwasher but there's no where to put one in my crappy kitchen. I have paper plates. Everything else is reusable and I am always cranky spending time at the kitchen sink every day, a couple times a day and still end up with a sink full of dishes. My kids are a******s
I have a dishwasher but prefer to wash by hand. Yup... I am an unusual one.
I got so sick of the massive piles of dishes our little family of three could pile up, in less than a week (and regardless of whether or not I washed what I used when I finished) that I put half of all our dishes up in a less used cupboard, still accessible for company. Three small plates, three bigger plates, three bowls six glasses (because sometimes you want a smaller or larger glass)... Still too many mugs, but honestly we each all have one favorite mug, so that's been less of an issue. I'm contemplating doing the same with the cutlery.
my house had a dishwasher when i bought it i had it taken out within the first month and had my dad bulid a wine rack to go in its place i can wash my own dishes
In the US most people don't have the extra 10 minutes it takes to wash their dishes because they've been at work for 16 hours paying for their health insurance and need to go to bed so they can get up and do it all over again.

The two periods of clearest air in yankland (the least air pollution from planes) since the 1950s were September 2001 and Spring-Summer 2020.
Scientists paid attention. They used both September 2001 and all of 2021 to prove the effects of air traffic pollution - AND how quickly we can reverse its effects by not flying. [ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3019178/ ] [ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8979614/ ]
Using an app called "Flightradar24" you can see all commercial and private flights. Way too many private planes.
What that doesn't tell you is how many passengers are on each one. Spoiler alert - way fewer than you'd think.
plot twist: none of those planes have any passengers.
Load More Replies...Yeah, if a flight is less then... let´s say two hours, take a train instead.
Cause you can't blame China or whatever for that. It's harder to defend the status quo when the matter is directly your responsibility.
Target Is Still Well Stocked On Soulless Christmas Trees
Same! Too many expectations and expenses. I don’t give gifts anymore and I ask not to receive them, I just want to spend a nice day and dinner with my family and that’s it.
Load More Replies...I love jól and I try my best to have nice and fun traditions for myself, for my kids and for us all as a family. I do not care for most Christmas decorations in stores because they are either too shiny, too Christian, too nonsense or just really ugly. I do love, however, old decorations (from the 1980s and older), homemade decorations, and fun decorations. The stuff on the above picture seems to boring and soulless. I suppose it's for people that take Christmas too seriously? Oh, another thing I just adore is old traditions from my country, Denmark. And I like to adopt new traditions from all over the world if they are meaningful to me. Actually, I'm gonna head over to tumblr and make a post about what I love about Jól and how I'm starting preparing for it in the Summer already. Lol. *whooosh!* away to tumblr. 😁
I stopped "decorating" thirty years ago, and told friends 25 years ago "don't buy me presents because I'm not buying other people presents anymore". They hated it the first year, then they became grateful to me.

Oh I Guess Natural Diamonds Are Great For The Environment
I thought I inherited a piece of diamond jewelry from my grandmother. Turns out they’re actually cubic zirconia, of course. It’s still beautiful and you can’t tell with the naked eye.
