In Fight Club, Brad Pitt’s character, Tyler Durden, delivered a powerful line: “The things you own end up owning you.” The main message is that many define themselves through material things, whether branded clothes, shiny gadgets, unneeded furniture, or expensive jewelry.

Consumerism has been a hot-button issue for decades, and many people are going against it. One group is the Anticonsumption subreddit, which has nearly 800,000 members as of this posting.

We’ve collected a handful of posts that express disapproval against all forms of materialism. See which ones you’re able to relate to the most.

This is a perfect example of a good but non-scalable solution. Banana leaves are produced locally and in limited quantity annually without damaging the tree. It's basically a leftover product, and availability roughly matches the demand, keeping the price low. Scaling up would mean either planting more trees (overproducing bananas and driving down its economic viability), overexploiting the trees, or displacing availability from local consumers to more high-paying ones, effectively negating access to the resource to the communities that use it and adding extra environmental impact from logistics.

Even though these are made with banana leaves, which don't grow everywhere this seems like something that could be done in other places. Not, on a large scale basis like grocery store, obviously. But, for farmers markets and stuff. Most places around the world have things to make baskets from.

Because that's what they have, so they use it. If you want to change the world, don't compare the world to this one tiny little spot on the global map. You need to think locally for things like this. Every area has their own unique qualities, so please don't Ever compare us/them again. It's just foolish.

I had to move from a big house to an apartment near the subway to not have to have a car. My new place is small compared to the old house, but I have 3 supermarkets in a 1km radio, a pet shop and a veterinary clinic. I can do everything just walking. My life improved maybe 80%.

All those things would be great, but I still want self-driving cars. Private cars are never going to disappear and self-driving cars have got to be better than cars driven by drunks, idiots, tired/angry/careless/impatient/arrogant people. Also worth noting that the issue of cities being built around cars seems to be more of a problem in the US than other places (I'm basing this on what I've read, not actual experience), where cities are still walkable and/or have usable public transport systems.

OP must not be an American. In the EU the '15 min. Cities' is an 'urban planning concept in which most daily necessities and services, such as work, shopping, education, healthcare, and leisure can be easily reached by a 15-minute walk, bike ride, or public transit ride from any point in the city." (from Wikipedia). In the US, this would require demolishing and rebuilding entire cities.

In a similar piece, Bored Panda spoke with UK-based clinical psychologist and The Thomas Connection founder Michaela Thomas. She discussed a potential link between overspending and mental disorders.

“If overspending is due to lack of financial planning, or wanting the dopamine kick of how good it feels to purchase something, that can be linked to ADHD, depression, mania, psychosis, or other dopamine-related issues.”

That was during Covid, and not entirely the fault of Brussels Airlines. The Lufthansa Group, of which BrA is part of, had in total 18000 empty or near-empty flights. Reason was the international rule of loosing slots if less than 80%, later reduced to 50%, of the slots were used. https://www.thebulletin.be/brussels-airlines-runs-3000-empty-flights-maintain-airport-slots

Technically true, also technically rage bait because it ignores the context. They did not do it out of spite or evilness. They had to follow a regulation that in the chaos that was COVID was not changed quickly enough. The alternative would have been to lose, possibly forever, access to extremely valuable and irreplaceable assets.

Worldwide aviation accounts for 10% of global emissions. American aviation emissions account for 2% of global emissions, while private jets account for 0.0004%. Meanwhile, the U.S who accounts for 4% of the human population, is responsible for 15% of global emissions.....30% of those emissions (4.5% of global emissions) are from individuals driving their cars. Just because you can point to something worse, doesn't mean you are doing well. Stop looking for excuses to make even less of an effort than you already do.

well universal health, public transit and affordable houses make not as much profit like cheap produced trash sold million times ( plus the clients data) capitalism is no longer a support for a trading society but a system to feed the greed of the unsatiable rich ones

Capitalism functions based on the will (and spending) of the masses. How many malls, chains and independently owned shops have we all watched fade into a vague memory? That hasn't happened because of some grand conspiracy, it's not the fault of "the rich"....it's because you, (yes you!) and countless others have opted to order everything off the internet and have it delivered straight to your door. Mostly from amazon! It's because so many people, when given the choice between wearing something they already own, or getting some new piece of fast fashion garbage....they'll choose the cheap PoS 9 times out of 10. They opt for eating food that's slowly killing them, over anything healthy because the death nuggets are in higher quantity. People order cheap plastic $hit from China, that they do not need, to "solve" problems they do not have because "it's cute" "it's cheap" "it was in my recommendations"

There are only 5 communist nations on the planet, the rest of them are capitalist, with socialist undertones...even the U.S. Yet capitalism is used as a catch all excuse/justification/defense for every societal failure in the U.S. It's not the system, it's the society, the people. The collective consequences of individual's actions. During Covid, it took a few months for the price of oil to go NEGATIVE. Oil companies actually had to pay people to store their products...it was exactly the same outcome that so many malls, stores, and independently owned businesses have succumbed to over the past couple of decades, and it should have been a wake up call to the masses about how their collective actions can impact the world in much more significant ways....but instead, everyone just shuffled back into doing what they always did, as soon as they were able to....Everyone needs to stop externalizing everything, and look at themselves, and those around them.

capitalism is both responding to and creating market demand. Public transit isn't as lucrative as "it's not just your car it's your freedom" car sales. Same with fast fashion. No one is running around saying "wow this 1998 wool sweater is just as great now as it was today!" etc. and so forth.

Then there is the question of, “What drives a person to purchase a product or service?” Survey Sparrow gave several factors, perception being one of them. It is the manner in which a consumer interprets information about what they intend to buy.

“A consumer who has had a positive experience with a particular brand may have a more favorable perception of that brand than a consumer who has not had any experience with the brand.”

It should be a law that anything with a rechargeable battery, can be opened easily in order to replace that battery. I'm staring at my old Clarisonic facial scrubber, the battery is dead and won't keep a charge. I have batteries for it, I simply have to mechanically slice the unit open to replace them, then use super glue to put it back together. It'll never be waterproof again though. Designs like this should be criminal. Phones are the worst.

Good for you! That sounds really awesome! Plain grass lawns are ugly as hell and such a waste of resources. I rent an apartment but if I had a home I’d do the same, get ride if he grass and plant wildflowers for the bees. Some people (especially HOAs) can be so painfully small-minded and easily forget that we’re a part of nature too.

Mowing green spaces is very often just dumb, especially in summer - the heat and rain free days will dry the stubbles very quickly, heat the earth, destroys places for animals und Humans are suffering from all of this too. Also, who wants to see short cut but rown lawn instead of long and diverse green?

There's a divided highway near where I work where they left the woods in the median instead of clearing out all the trees. This helps the environment and saves money.

Bee Pasture (Méhlegelő) is a concept in Hungary (and in many other countries) where urban green spaces (e.g. parts of parks, dividing strips between roads, etc.) are first mown down in a year just after the seeding season (practically end of summer) to allow bees and other insects to live there.

YES!! I replaced about half of my front lawn with native plants, before we moved and we started renting it out. If we move back, I'll replace the rest. I have since learned how to kill off the turf grass quickly without toxic chemicals, so I don't need to tear it up.

Problem in the US is that people litter, intentionally and unintentionally. When you drive down autobahns in Germany or almost any European country - the sides of the roads are (almost, if not) pristine! I would love flowers and trees, but that would be a pain in the @** to try and keep clean. Too many (not all) of my fellow US persons have sadly adopted the "not my problem" attitude.

These obscenely large abominations have become very popular with a certain type of person here in Australia. It's awful, because none of our infrastructure is designed with "suburban tank for perpetual manbabies" in mind. They block streets, take up multiple parking spots and are a dangerous nightmare on the road.

Pickup truck drivers in Southern Ontario tend to drive aggressively and most of them are often tow truck drivers racing to the scene of an accident hoping to get to the scene of the accident first before someone else does. All while disregarding the traffic laws and the safety of other drivers.

My husband has a Dodge 5500. We farm and have to have a huge truck to haul stock trailers with cattle and horses. We also sell hay and haul loads up to 350 bales at a time. I would LOVE to see a Ranger or an S10 do what we can do with his truck.

Some people don't understand needs of ranchers and farmers, there is a need for the bigger one. Hauling hay, tractor tires, irrigation pipes and wheels, towing horse and livestock trailers, water tanks, fertilizer tanks, Fuel for the tractor, wind-rower, baler. Getting your kids to school when the weather had turned your road into a mug bog. The list goes on.

I typically drive a mini cooper, the transmission went out, (rip Pigpen),and I've had to drive my fella's big truck the last couple weeks, it's infuriating seeing the level of disrespect I've grown accustomed to when in my practical vehicle vs the small apartment that is the truck. I'm absolutely switching to a smaller car as soon as I can, but knowing I'm going to be cut off and in constant danger again is bs. Also, the blind spots on those behemoths is horrifying.

What is terrible about this news is not only that the groom died because of cheap insulin, but also that he wanted to spend more than he could afford on the wedding, and that caused his death. BTW in Hungary, a daily insulin dose (at 40 E/die) is like $0.5, an 1500E penfill costs cca. $8.

As Proffessor Robin Feldman wrote in her book on d**g prices, that a single paragraph change in US regulations would plummet Insulin prices to beween 10-15 dollars. The high price is not profit, but actually costs regarding regulations in the US market that were put there to prevent competetiion, but also caused massive prices.

This was basically the arrangement that led to the golden age of Transatlantic travels. Government paid for a share of the new ships, in exchange of some recurring service (mail or goods passage) and the right to requisition the ship in case of war. Companies made good revenues, created jobs, invested in local shipbuilding and new technologies were developed quickly due to the shorter pay-back time of investments. Not saying it's a good idea, but thought the parallel would be interesting.

Then like the good environmentally concerned company they are they got rid of the plastic cutlery and went to wooden. But they had 8 boxes of this plastic cutlery that they put in the staff canteen each box contained a thousand individually wrapped in plastic, plastic cutlery! That was just one shop I'd hate to think what the bigger stores had.

If you're just talking about seed costs maybe but please can we not make out that farming isn't work? Growing high quality, organic-standard, seasonal vegetables is non-stop labour, highly stressful (when your 5th bed of carrots this year has been devastated by slugs), skillful, intellectually demanding. Compost, pest management systems, water management systems, seeds that may or may not germinate or have mould problems, temperature management systems (polytunnels/greenhouses, that sort of thing), none of that is free and all of it is necessary if you are trying to grow a consistent yield, high-quality crop that replaces the supermarket food system. I encourage everyone to grow whatever food they can no matter how small their space and I agree with "grow food not lawns" but growing food is work and our farmers (and the families that support them!) deserve to have their labour recognised for what it is.

in fairness, we do share a maritime border with russia, a known hostile nation. we should be expanding our military, especially in the arctic. right now, russia could set up camp there on many arctic islands with zero opposition.

This is in response to Dominik, The world population is projected to keep growing despite declining fertility rates. In fact, we estimate the number of infants already peaked in 2017. Instead, population growth in the future will come from larger groups of people at adult ages. Demographers call this phenomenon population momentum. check out this website: https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2023/11/world-population-estimated-eight-billion.html#:~:text=The%20world%20population%20is%20projected,call%20this%20phenomenon%20population%20momentum.

According to Dr. Kasser, people who tend to be materialistic also experience problems outside of their mental health.

“They reported physical health problems, such as stomachaches and headaches, and the less they experienced pleasant emotions and felt satisfied with their lives.”

As an upholsterer I am pretty sure the main reason is not the cats but the fake leather that's mostly on chairs like this. Fake leather peels of even without cats. Because of usage, heat, light, soap and time.

My friend used to declutter her kids' rooms back when they were younger, significantly reducing the amount of toys and putting the rest in the attic. When the kids wanted something from up there, they had to put something else in storage. Things that hadn't got used for xy long got donated or sold at a flea market.

I used to collect Star Trek action figures and other Sci fi genres. Woke up one day and thought, what the hel am I doing?! If I'd put that money into a bank, I wouldn't have to scrape by when a major issue instead of getting loans! I tried to sell them on line, stuff just sat there. Ended up having a yard sale, my husband sold the entire collection (3 large totes) for $15. Got upset for a nanosecond. Realized I'd rather have $15 for gas or food than 3 totes of actual garbage!

Avoid Temu, Shein and so on, but don't make "it's China" your heuristic. Remember that there are sweatshops in Europe and the US too - and that prison labour is a huge industry in the US especially. And when it comes to scam sellers that exist to harvest your data, they're often branded with major western brands as offering discounted and warehouse deals.

I love compost bins. I really do! But I am not sure if it's a great thing to share them.... because, let's be honest, most of what people put in there is probably weeds that will not die in a compost pile and then you take from the compost and you are now the "happy" owner of weed seeds that you blend into your soil. And that is how we got an invasive plant in our garden that will take decades to get rid of. Japanese knotweed, I think the English name for it is. So.... do yourself a favour and make your own compost and use your own compost.

Cardboard and duct tape, a match made in heaven (that is just a phrase, I'm no a believer)

Signs of materialism are believed to manifest at a young age. According to Professor Mònica Casabayó of Spain’s Esade University, family income determines whether a child will grow up to be a consumerist.

“Children in lower-income families were significantly more materialistic than children growing up in higher-income families,” she said in an article for the University website.

I just assumed he was some random irritating student from years ago. I also assumed the original slogan was probably dickish cos the guy looks like a twat.

Excellent perspective. It applies to the cheap housing construction going on all over the US right now. The million dollar cardboard houses being poorly constructed over every spot of land will last maybe 50 years at best before having to be overhauled or demoed. Think about the size of THAT landfill.

"Real cost pricing", aka "Pigouvian taxation" - tax all new made or imported materials $0.01 per pound per number of years it takes to biodegrade in a landfill. That cardboard takeout container now costs about half a cent more, but the plastic alternative costs like 25 cents more. Meanwhile recycled materials are free because the tax was already paid. Now there is an economic incentive to reduce, reuse, recycle, or use more environmentally friendly materials

All the streaming services had to do was be easier and more convenient than piracy. Now that they've once again made it an expensive, overcomplicated mess that's full of ads, piracy is once again gonna soar. Expect a lot of whinging in news media from entertainment corpo executives about piracy.

I'll say it every time this is brought up. The ads on Prime came from the writer's strike. Once they were forced to pay creators a living wages they had to come up with more money, which either means taking away corporate profits or taking it from consumers. And since corporate profits are sacred, you get ads.

Very short slighted. They could have got a smaller cut now to pay the writers and kept making hoarders of money, but now they are going to lose so much market that the loss is going to be massive and possibly they might have to shut down business

They all jumped on the streaming bandwagon as if the amount of possible paying subscribers was infinite and the CoViD19 lockdowns would last forever. Now they realize that no, you have a limited amount of people willing to pay to watch your content. But those people have to be lured some way, so they spent ungodly amounts of money to create content to compete with other similar services for an ever shrinking market. And now the huge investments they made to do just that makes almost impossible to pull the plug. Hence, grasping at straws like hiking up prices and advertisements to try to make up for the money pit those services have become for them. They'll implode sooner than later anyway.

Who is using their f*****g products? Emissions derived from extraction and refinement pale in comparison to the emissions generated by consumption of those products. YOU are the ones consuming their products. The united states accounts for 4% of the human population, and 15% of global emissions, 4.5% of those emissions are generated by individuals burning gasoline to power their cars. Oil companies, and in fact all environmentally destructive corporations exist only so long as consumers, which means YOU, continue to give them your money. If you stop giving them your money, they will cease to exist, or at very least fail to maintain the level of power and influence that YOU have given them. It's the mentality of a very poorly educated child to reduce every failing to "well if you didn't want me to do something stupid, you shouldn't have given it to me"

I knew if I scrolled long enough I'd come across some "educated" college kids defending Communism. Communism is responsible for the deaths of over 60 MILLION people (something Wikipedia has repeatedly tried to hide), and has failed EVERY time it's been implemented. But sure, keep telling yourself "But, it will work THIS time. Everyone else was just doing it wrong". And lest we forget the irony of these young people praising Communism and berating capitalism...all from behind the screens of $3000 Macbooks or $1000 iPhones, wearing expensive name brand clothes and sitting in a Starbucks drinking a $9 latte.

That's both true and not much of a riposte. The consistent failures of both Christianity and Communism to create the societies they promise demonstrates the failure of both philosophies to be robust to human cognitive biases (or human frailties or whatever you want to call it). ("Capitalism" per se isn't philosophically consistent enough to say the same as it's a description of various emergent systems. It's true of free-market capitalism though.)

Or they could have a "donation" point set up maybe? But then that would involve people actually taking down the tents and packing up the other gear rather than walking away from it.

On the plus side (sort of), they can give all those abandoned camping gears to the homeless. Obviously, it won't solve the problem of homelessness itself, but it can make countless people's nights safer and warmer.

No: they are super-cheap tents that don't offer meaningful protection from the elements and don't last more than one or two uses. It's like saying cheap Shein clothes can solve the problem of clothing for the homeless, when in reality even the *unused* garments shipped off to Ghana and Chile are too low-quality to be used by recyclers or sold on African markets. These tents are literally unusable, broken rubbish. Even if people didn't abandon them, they would only end up in the bin.

I never get it..A god tent isn't that cheap, do you just buy a new one every festival season ? Do we really have that much money.? I would spend it to poorer people or like said before to homeless.. or maybe building a cooperation and upcicle it to new festival equipment with some cool branding name..and sell it expensive to the people that already had buyed it years before once little edit: another solution were a fee you get back when you leave the place clean ..just give the spots Registration Numbers and a online booking system

These aren't good tents. They are extremely cheap and break almost immediately. From a purely selfish economic perspective they make sense: a Creamfield's ticket is £240. A beer is £6. A Bacardi and Pepsi is £7. Most of these tents are between £20 and £50 - maybe £10 per person per night, if you use it only once. So cheap! And they're only good for one or two uses, certainly no good for living in. If your only camping is once a year at Creamfields, the use-it-and-junk-it makes economic sense. The single-use festival tent culture needs to die but it won't happen without being banned. Um, yes, I might find this topic a LITTLE triggering.

If you bring a tent to a festival, you shoukd have to pay a fee. If you take your tent with you when you leave, you get part of it back.

Meanwhile people who create this same type of scene in an attempt to survive, and build some form of community with those of the same struggles? They are forced to continue moving, and if they don't move fast enough the government puts money toward bulldozers, and dumpsters, and police presence to forcibly remove them, their dwellings, and their belongings. If they're going to outright abandon their stuff, organize it as a donation event where it's advertised that these items will be free to all takers at the end of the event. A step further would be that event coordinators up the price of tickets to pay for rubbish clean up, but as a deposit. If you clean up, you get your deposit back.

Which is why the 4-6 weeks leading up to a sale see items have their prices jacked up by 20-40%, then the sale see the price drop by 20% which means you're still paying more than if you had bought the thing 6 weeks before, or two weeks after the "sale"

😮 Why not have the recycled cardboard packing that fruit gets shipped in, but maybe a slimline version that fits the shelf. When it gets ratty recycle it again and grab another recycled one for the shelf. And repeat.

Professor Casabayó and her colleagues also found that a child’s education plays a role.

“Our data show that children in religious schools were less materialistic than children in secular schools. Religious schools may influence children by putting over a world view where spiritual ends are more important than possessions."

We won't last long enough and it won't be climate change. It will be Nuclear Winter that ends it. The really surprising thing is the surprisingly low number of nuclear detonations it is estimated to take to initiate nuclear winter. Updated models show an exchange between Pakistan and India which would be around 100 warheads would cause a decade of nuclear winter.

Meanwhile you could have build ONE HUNDRED SIXTY bicycles with the same amount of steel and resources as one SUV. Cars murder 7500 pedestrians per year in yankland, meanwhile the number of pedestrians killed by cyclists is a single digit number (under ten). There are 239 million drivers in yankland, 54 million cyclists. That means pedestrians are killed 169 times as often per car driver than per cyclist.

I didn't find the source for this plastic stat, but a paper published in Nature in 2020 (paywalled, so I couldn't read it) estimated that human-made mass (incl not just plastics but all cities, roads etc) now exceeds all living biomass (incl all animal, plant life etc). It seems a hell of a stretch on the face of it (forests are pretty big, for a start) but it made it through peer review at one of the world's top journals, so presumably it must be at least somewhat plausible.

Makes me so mad. I buy materials for work from a certain website that rhymes with “RistaBrint”. They didn’t have what I was looking for at all, so I googled it to see where else I could find it. The first search result was a page from “RistaBrint” saying “the thing you want for sale.” When I clicked it, it was not the thing I wanted, it was a completely different product. I work in marketing myself and I find false advertising like that so annoying, it’s shallow and cheap to do that to people.

And Birds were of course affected by the fire partially because of habitat loss. And the fires would not have been so destructive had water been available. Water had been diverted to big corporations, hotels, golf courses. Not only had those developments make the fire worse, but just by all of the development that took away birds habitat.

And yet idiots say "the earth can support 15 billion!" Only if we turn to cannibalism. Even with millions choosing to go Childfree and human populations looking to peak at 10-11 billion in the next few decades, environmental collapse is inevitable. I'm glad I'll be dead by about 2050, and I don't have any kids (let alone grandkids) to suffer through it.

I'm not a fan of plastic waste and single use plastic like this, but there are actually a lot of people out there with a wide ranging array of disabilities that this helps out a lot. There are people for whom cutting up stuff like this is either physically painful or physically impossible.

It can be achieved otherwise, with a free cutting service at the grocery store for example, like it's done for cutlery and the likes, and bringing your own container too. And while it's true that a lot of people have a large array of disabilities, I doubt that they are that many to need so much of it.

I reuse plastic tubs, peanut butter tubs, Glace ice cream tubs, glass jars, they last for years and it means that I don't have to buy 'specialised' containers. My carry out knife and fork for journeys is one from the kitchen drawer, I take my favourite mug and a melamine plate that I've had for a long, long time.

I got so sick of the massive piles of dishes our little family of three could pile up, in less than a week (and regardless of whether or not I washed what I used when I finished) that I put half of all our dishes up in a less used cupboard, still accessible for company. Three small plates, three bigger plates, three bowls six glasses (because sometimes you want a smaller or larger glass)... Still too many mugs, but honestly we each all have one favorite mug, so that's been less of an issue. I'm contemplating doing the same with the cutlery.

I love jól and I try my best to have nice and fun traditions for myself, for my kids and for us all as a family. I do not care for most Christmas decorations in stores because they are either too shiny, too Christian, too nonsense or just really ugly. I do love, however, old decorations (from the 1980s and older), homemade decorations, and fun decorations. The stuff on the above picture seems to boring and soulless. I suppose it's for people that take Christmas too seriously? Oh, another thing I just adore is old traditions from my country, Denmark. And I like to adopt new traditions from all over the world if they are meaningful to me. Actually, I'm gonna head over to tumblr and make a post about what I love about Jól and how I'm starting preparing for it in the Summer already. Lol. *whooosh!* away to tumblr. 😁

If you buy from Temu, where everything is cheap - how much do you think that the person who made it is getting? Cost of living 'may' be cheaper in the countries where the goods are made, but it's not free.

Get a mechanical pencil. It's made of metal (even new ones last a decade), never gets short, and the leads are replaceable. Also, leads come in blue and red, not just black.

I thought I inherited a piece of diamond jewelry from my grandmother. Turns out they’re actually cubic zirconia, of course. It’s still beautiful and you can’t tell with the naked eye. There’s literally no benefit to me replacing the jewels with real diamonds for thousands of dollars….so glad I don’t have an expensive ego

It only applies to microwaves that hang over your stove that have the hood vents underneath them, they use charcoal filters to filter whatever they suction in.

Same. I'm so much behind that list it's crazy. We got our couch second-hand since we've been married (~35 years). We each have our own towels and we've had them for over 20 years. Bathmat probably 5-10 years. I have all my original appliances except the crockpot which breaks every 5-6 years.
