I feed a feral cat that has a similar mustache. I call her Kitler when she slaps me whilst feeding or Priscilla when she does not. And yes I have cat igloos for both her and her buddy, Puddy Tat, he never slaps me.

If there’s one thing that rivals looking at adorable animal photos, it’s spending time with them in person. Sonia, a dedicated volunteer at Adoption Chats Sans Abri (ACSA), a cat shelter in Canada, knows this joy firsthand. Regularly involved at the shelter, she also shares snapshots of the cats she cares for on Reddit. Bored Panda got in touch with Sonia to learn more about her experiences.
After moving back to Quebec City, where ACSA is located, Sonia felt a pull to help out. “I walked in front of the shelter a couple of times before finally deciding to step in and volunteer,” she explains. “Now, I’m usually there twice a week. It’s really good for my self-esteem. It’s also hard to feel depressed when you’re in a room full of kittens.”

Animals who love us just tune into us and our vibes, so they know right away when weâre down. Bet you anything the dog followed the boy out onto the stairs without being told to, and sat down to spend time just being with him to let him know his dog will always love him, and be there for him, no matter what.

Yup. That's not even a picture intended to show the sex, but you can still tell very easily. It's also extremely easy to identify the females when they're nursing, because their teats will be very obvious. We had one for years. She would run from several houses down the street to get to the house when somebody came home. She loved windmill cookies. When it was time for her to die, she came back to the house and would lay on the porch with us. She died right in front of the house and was buried with the other family pets.

About 15 minutes pass and the speech is over ... the handler gave a command and the dog tossed up and caught the treat ... and they walked off to wonderment and applause.

Sadly, while adopting from shelters is widely considered the ethical choice, many shelters are facing a crisis. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, adoption rates soared as people sought companionship during lockdowns. Some shelters even emptied out as animals were adopted at record rates. But that wave of enthusiasm was short-lived, and shelters are now overwhelmed again as more animals come in than go out.

In the U.S., during 2020, when adoption rates spiked, 2% more animals left shelters than arrived, according to Shelter Animals Count. However, by 2021, that figure reversed—2% more animals entered shelters than left. In 2022, the gap widened to 4%. While that may not seem like much, each percentage point represents tens of thousands of animals.

My first rat, Chance, was a fantastic animal. Would come running from the other room when you called his name, was so smart he figured out how to unlock the cage door letting all the rats out so I had to start padlocking it at night, would curl up on my chest while i watched TV, and curled up in my hood asleep while I did household chores or went out shopping. You were the awesomest little guy, miss you buddy, never saw your style in another rat again.

I love mice and rats. I mean in a pet sort of way that is. So darn cute.
Shelters have become overcrowded, partly because of lifestyle changes that came with the end of lockdowns. Pets who spent months indoors with their owners around suddenly had to adjust when people returned to their normal routines outside the house. This stress led to behavioral issues that many struggled to manage. For instance, dog owners reported challenges as their pets adapted to being left alone or reintroduced to public spaces. As a result, some decided to return their pets to shelters.

Animals know who the good people are, and will let them pet their bellies. They also know who the bad people are, and will bite them hard anywhere theyâre able to latch on (even âthereâ, oh hell yeah they will), and not let go.
Despite the pandemic being behind us, shelters are still facing the issue of being overfilled, even years later.
“When I first started 9 years ago, we always had open spaces in our shelter. Now we fill spaces within about 90 seconds,” says Natalie Thomson, chief communications officer of Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL). “Saying ‘no’ to an animal in need is one of the hardest things in the world, but when there is physically no place to put them, you have to.”

In 2000, I was doing a side gig with Census. Went to a house not far from mine, went to the door, knocked, no one home. In that case you put the forms in a bag and hang on the door k**b. After doing that, I turned around...HUGE Rottweiler (must have been under the deck) standing there showing his teeth, oddly enough, not growling. "oh c**p" I thought, and dropped my hands by my sides. Big goofball came up and nuzzled my R hand. Big dope was smiling at me I learned later, when I met the folks' daughter in law.

I remember pulling up next to a horse trailer at a red light. The horse was looking out the side window, and when I turned to look at them, we caught eyes. I had the biggest smile on my face, and suddenly the horse opened its mouth in what looked like a big grin too, like they were trying to make the same face back. For all I know, they couldâve just been letting out a big satisfying fart, but I like to think a horse smiled back at me because itâs a lot cooler than a fart face.

Please make sure you have someone to care for your animals in case YOU go over the rainbow 1st. I had an agreement with a good friend that we would take care of each other's dog if something were to happen. Sadly, I became Mom to her Corgi. Also, leave money in your Will so that they will be taken care of but without telling them. Otherwise, some may just want the money and put your dog up for adoption.

Iâm 63, and remember dressing the cat in baby clothes and pushing her around in my doll carriage, with the dog (St Bernard) following us everywhere we went. That is, until the cat finally had enough of that folderol and jumped out of the carriage, then managed to shimmy out of the baby clothes in the backyard and meowed at the door to be let back inside.

We Have A Garage, Which Is To Store Old Motorcycles And Unused Stuff. However, We Found This In Our Garage
3 weeks ago I was searching for some screws and hammers when I saw that a bird had made a small nest on a pipe that I had rolled and hung on a hook. The place wasn't very illuminated, so I couldn't see if there was a bird or not. When I took a closer look, this bird saw me and flew away. I thought I might've scared her and she wouldn't come back, so I went away. When I came back after 3 days, that bird was sitting there quietly. I didn't approach her, or she might fly away again. A week later she had laid eggs and was waiting for them to hatch. Cut to again a week later (or maybe a week ago from today), the eggs had hatched, and these were two little cuties that were looking at me. This makes me so happy, I can't explain.

We had a pair of bird build a nest in an old bucket that was in our garage. Propped the garage door open just enough for them to fly in and out while they were nesting then sitting on their eggs, and after they hatched, while their babies were growing. Once the babies left the nest, the parents followed, and the garage door was shut. Wonder if theyâll be coming back next year. We also have a pair of finches who nest up under the eaves of our porch roof every spring, and a pair of hummingbirdsâ-well actually, it seems there are three, two males who constantly fight each other, and one female, so maybe a rather contentious mĂ©nage a trois?â-who build a nest every summer in our honeysuckle, which is so old the vines have become a really sturdy, sweet smelling, and very bushy tree.

Iâm on the Eastern Shore, and am âthat weirdoâ who will stop her car to get a turtle out of the road. Even a huge snapping turtle the size of a platter, who was just so ungrateful, he strained to extend his neck enough to clamp down hard on my wrist, and I was being so careful to keep my arms and hands away from his mouth. Drew blood and everything. I still have the scars, though theyâve faded a lot. Even after that, Iâm STILL âthat weirdoâ who saves turtles. I also rescue black rat snakes and get them to the side of the road (I find a stick to pick them up with). But not enough of a weirdo to even get out of the car for a copperhead. Nope, no way. Theyâre on their own.
