Also possible there was a lot of matting going on. I had one cat that would get mats CONSTANTLY and it's way more painful to have them brushed out vs being shaved. However this could also easily be people trying to do that stupid lion cut thing -_-

Poor cat, but unfortunately with some long haired cats, they can get prone to over-grooming, get extremely bad hairballs, and their fur may become tangled and matted also, so shaving does become a neccessity. My cat is part main c**n and goes outside. He is shedding a lot at the moment. He has paste to help with digesting what he swallows and over trained him to be brushed. I can understand needed to cut some seed heads out but a cat who is healthy and had attention shouldn't get matted. This really is extreme and it may have distressed cats and how they sense their surroundings (although, admittedly, I do not know for a fact though)

A long-haired cat like this could get VERY matted fur if not brushed properly (and often). Mats can irritate the skin underneath and the skin can even get infected. So, if a cat is matted, the mats must be cut out or shaved out. Aside from matting, senior cats may need grooming and/or shaving, as it is sometimes difficult for them to groom as well as they used to when they were more flexible :)

Fleas and ticks can live relatively invisibly in a hair mat, and mats around the hind end can cause an accumulation of feces that sometimes obstruct defecation.
Severe hair mats can grow so tightly that they can even restrict or cut off blood circulation, which can eventually require amputation.

I once took in a stray cat that had tangled with some cactus in the desert. She had to be shorn like this to free her from all the spines. Fortunately, her long fur had trapped most of them and kept them from her skin. She looked quite ridiculous for a couple of months, but she was so happy to be free!

Yes! Huskies have double coats and should not be shaved unless necessary. Their coat helps them regulate their temperature.

WHY????? This breed of dog should not have its hair cut. The coat protects them not only from the cold, but from the harmful sun rays as well. Neither the owner nor the groomer have the slightest idea about the dog's needs, and haven't taken five minutes to find out, either. (Edit: grammar and spelling)

This is so dangerous. Breeds with double coats regulate their body temperature from shedding and regrowing their undercoat every year. This cut could actually cause him to overheat. Why do groomers not know this?

Because any idiot can say they are groomers without actually knowing anything about dogs. Others only care about money, and they'll do whatever the owner wants, whether it's good for the dog or not. Fortunately most of them (at least the ones I know) are responsible and try to educate the owners about the dogs' needs.

Please donāt shave your dogs. Especially dogs that are meant to have thick coats. Their coat actually keeps them cool. I hate seeing people shave their dogs in the summer. You are taking away what actually cools them.

Cats, especially breeds with medium and long length hair, are also prone to health issues caused by matting. Sometimes Lauren has to completely shave them to eradicate their dangerously-matted coats.

No need for a new winter coat, they still have the one from last season.

But generally, there are ways to prevent trips to groomers or veterinarians to treat matted hair.
Brushing your pet on a regular basis at home can help prevent injury and save money too because groomers often charge extra for mats. Doing so may also allows your pet to get used to being handled and brushed, which will hopefully make it less stressful if they ever need to visit a groomer.

Really??? I had a dog that would mat 15 minutes after brushing and there's no way of knowing what kind of fur a 5 week old puppy you plucked out of a wood pile is going to have. She had to have regular trims and honestly was quite lucky I found her and took care of her. Hell, I even started working for a veterinarian because I wanted to be able to take great care of her. Anyway, please keep in mind that situations are different when you pass along your harsh judgements.

Well they did ask to get it trimmed. But I'd be refusing to pay since they refused to trim it as requested. What sort of groomer just does whatever the hell they want? edit: Went to the source, and the grooming was apparently done in China. They explicitly said "don't shave it" but the groomer did anyway.

The only issue with double coated breeds such as Huskies, Malamute or Samoyeds, for example, is that the fur can be heavily damaged by shaving and skin issues are more likely to occur such as sunburn or psoriasis. Damage to the fur might be alopecia, to name one... this can cause problems in temperature regulation like overheating (too dense fur could also appear bc the dog cannot shed its fur properly between summer and winter fur, so it's compacting) or hypothermia.

Looks like it helped this cat keep some confidence. We had neighbours who had a real mafiaboss of a cat, except after a shave, mean catdude would hide in the bushes until it grew back.

Poor Pom! That is just so wrong! So happy I learned how to groom my dogs. I save tons of money, I get quality time with each one and they don't come home looking like someone went at them with dull hedge trimmers. So many professional groomers at these box stores have zero qualifications.

The source is just instagram and doesn't mention anything about it. Lots of other photos including some where he's clipped properly. If there were eye problems I'd expect there to be stains below the eyes. So I'm going with no infection, just a strange groomer.

If you reread the caption above this picture of the schnauzer I believe it was the groomer though that took the picture and put the caption up there evidently it was the owner though this time they had requested it done this way and they actually did it the way the owner wanted it done! But there's a whole lot of these others though that the groomer just, I guess took some razors and just zoomed right on through all their fur instead of making them pretty and nice looking! š

They sometimes have to do this for sanitary reasons if a cat stops grooming their fur or the matts get too bad to comb out. I'll never have a long haired cat for exactly that reason. I've taken care of a few Persians and it's such a pain to have to groom them every day.

I read that huskies should NEVER be shaved. Their two layers of fur will not grow back correctly and will permanently damage their coat.

Yep. Double coated dogs shouldn't be shaved unless they're so matted that it's completely unavoidable.

Likely. Once they get that chonky, it's hard for them to reach their backsides to groom so the fur gets matted around the haunches and tail.

We have her on a schedule now every 8-10 weeks, she has a dense undercoat and I want a quality brush for daily maintenance between appointments so I don’t have to shave her again.

Ever since I got a big slicker brush with dense tines, my cat will actually come running when I pick up the brush. She loves it. She's a Siberian who sheds all year round, so we're both grateful for the brush.

I always tell clients, I'm a vet not a groomer-- we'll do the best we can. When your vet does a clip down, it is usually because the cat is too fractious to go to the groomer, and it is medically necessary - usually severely matted. Old cats- like this one appears to be- are super hard to clip down-- their skin is paper thin,. You you can't do them awake as they are also painful, from arthritis, which is why they don't groom well and their owners cannot brush in the first place.

Many of these are disturbing. Shows owners are neglecting care if their pets. Cats are sensitive to shaving. Not funny, bp.

And shaving an animal with a double coat can be bad for them, the fur may not grow back the same and it affects their temperature regulation. It should only be done if absolutely necessary

Why are there so many cats getting haircuts?! Unless their coats are matted (generally avoidable by taking proper care of them) or they need an operation, there is absolutely no need to shave them like this. Pretty horrible to see, honestly.

I wonder how many of these with a normal-looking "before" photo, that photo is also "before" they skipped brushing their dog for several months. I'm sure some of them are just incompetent groomers, but I'd bet a good share are the owner's fault.

Cats should not be shaved unless for medical treatment or in cases of neglect (by the owners or a poorly/elderly cat)** which causes severe matting. A lot of the featured dogs were groomed unecessarily when all they needed was a wash, brush and trim. Animals should not be "groomed" (including having their fur dyed) for the amusement of the owner. **also applies to canines

or you go to a trained groomer that does take the time to learn about different coats and trims/cuts/shears accordingly. We had no idea how to care for a long haired podengo portuguese so we found a groomer that showed us how to pull out the dead hair instead of cutting and ripping his hair with brushes.
