Where and whenever one gets the chance, punch a Nazi today. Wherever they may roam. My skin crawls to think that in this day and age (especially in North America or Europe) there is a pretty good chance that they are descended from at least one person who fought against the original ones. Fascism is a scourge on humanity. Point finale.

I had some of my family die from the nazis and polish executioners. I have met multiple holocaust survivors, each story unique. None of them as beautiful as this though.

It actually makes me sick how much effort we put into torturing and killing our fellow humans ... we should be way ahead of such, but instead of going forward, building upon developments of former decades - we hardly succeed in defending what we already reached. Instead of that, we now have to face rightwing radicals in all of europe, getting more and more traction within the voters - as if none of the atrocities of the past would teach us better. It could. Should - but we gotta listen.

I'm reading Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's "Good Omens" right now which is dark comedy about the apocalypse and nature of religion and human morality. One of the parts that stuck out to me is when they say that the demons couldn't think up a torture as horrible as what people were already doing to one another.

As a Jewish person myself I cannot thank people like her enough who stood up against hate and antisemitism and fought for what's right even at the cost of her own safety and risking her own life. We must never forget the atrocities of the Holocaust because every human life matters regardless of race, religion, sex, age, ethnicity, sexual preference, etc.

That's wonderful! I've been a Safety and Health responder (i'm not sure this is the right translation of "bedrijfshulpverlener") at my school for 18 years and only in the last refresher course (last week) it was adressed that burns look different on light and dark skin. I think that should have been taught 18 years ago. Luckily i didn't have to give first aid for burns and i do have some common sense, but still...

AND - it likely exceeds skin. The skin-related metabolism differs pretty vastly, and everything connected to it - sunburns, vitamine D, ... - does also, of course. The same applies to women/men. We don't react identical. We shall aknowledge difference, take it into account whereever it is implied, analyze, and act accordingly. This may range from slight adjustments in dosage to completely different approaches, although the disease/condition itself is no different.

Yup. Equal treatment DOES NOT mean equitable treatment. Different ethnicities and even sexes SHOULD be treated differently to ensure the most optimal outcomes. So many people don’t see or understand that it is for their benefit, not due to discrimination. People should be taught this and get over being offended.

I used the same books on symptoms and signs as everyone. Written in UK but used by us in Nigeria. You really do not need a specially written book for us. We know how a black jaundiced skin will look. That is why we did not bother creating one. We were writing books for tropical medicine that western books did not cover. The only reason this is getting attention, is because a black student write something for blacks in a white society. Like his way of thinking, but next time as your senior colleagues if the research is actually needed.

The question is, would Nigerian doctors know what these same symptoms and signs looked like on lighter skin if their curriculum focused only on darker skin? This doctor is dealing with the opposite, he lives in a society where many doctors rarely interact with anyone with darker skin so they have no basis for knowledge.

A recent international survey from Oxford’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that in almost every country surveyed, people’s trust in media is decreasing. More and more people are avoiding news because, they say, it “has a negative effect on their mood.”

This is why allowing yourself some light-hearted content that evokes positive emotional responses such as curiosity and amazement, or surprise, is very important. But despite good news and positive content being beneficial to our mental health, like most people are aware of, our behavior tells a different story.

The researchers also found that, on average, negative news provoked much stronger physiological reactions and garnered more attention than positive or neutral news. And even though individual people’s reactions varied a bit, a minority of people respond more to positive news.

San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich, in response to a senator's announcement that her office was "ready to assist" after the most recent school shooting: ""In what?" Popovich said. "They're dead. What are you going to assist with? Cleaning up their brains off the wall? Wiping the blood off the schoolroom floor? What are you going to assist with? Most of you in this room, when we were in school, we worried if Nancy would dance with us on Friday after the football game or something. That was our anxiety. (The Second Amendment is) a myth, it's a joke, it's just a game they play. I mean, that's freedom. Is it freedom for kids to go to school and try to socialize and try to learn and be scared to death that they might die that day?"

I hope that no child, teenager, or teacher will ever have to protect another friend, student, or classmate from a bullet. I hope that no children, teenager, or teacher will ever have to witness the death of a loved one is school. The US needs true gun reform and to aby commenters who sasy that guns don't kill people, I would love you to say that directly to the face of this young man and all the students who witnessed the deaths of their classmates and teachers.

That couldn't really happen though, since trisomy 21 (95% of those with Down syndromw) is the result of a pair of 21st chromosomes in either the sperm or the egg failing to separate at or before conception and about 1 out of 770 babies (in the US anyway) are born with the extra chromosome. While there are parents with Down syndrome that have children with Down syndrome, the vast majority are born to chromosomally normal parents.

I spent a couple of years working with Russian exchange students in Tennessee and those were two of the greatest years of my life. The girl I will always consider the love of my life was Russian. I miss all of the Russians except one, and she was a lawyer. Evidently lawyers are douchebags no matter where they are from.

Well, that, of course. We're not under Putin's command, by no means at all. Diktatorewitsch has no power over anybody outside Russia, unless they wanted him to... But, those who support the current invasion, may face at least some uncomfortable debate, boycott and not exactly an atmosphere of welcomery - whoever supports that sad excuse of a grinch-impostor obviously chose to do so, and being free to do and say whatever one may want to, includes that whatever they do or say can have consequences.

Moreover, almost every Russian I have met in the USA is against the invasion. They are not subject to the barrage of government propaganda like the people who live in Russia, and are not obsessed with extreme nationalism, otherwise they would never have left Russia. Few unltra-nationalistic Russians ever left Russia, even under Communism, and those who did went back when Communism fell.

Remember when Brown people of varying ethnicities were accosted and beaten after 9/11? Then Asians during Covid? And now Russians. There's a world of difference between Americans and Mericans.

Sadly, too many parts of the South of the USA seem to be hankering for a return to those days. I need to ask this as a reasonably sane Englishman of a certain age (ie one who remembers the vile days of casual, institutionalised racism / sexism etc in the UK), is it just me, or are the Southern states getting more militant and demented as time goes on ? If so, why, and if that is the case, what can be done to stop this self destructiveness ?

When asked about the reasons why fake news has become so widespread, the cybersecurity expert said that it’s “due to factors that concern both the content of the messages and the technological foundation of platforms on which the news is proliferated.”

“Fake news is usually related to current affairs and makes remarkable, emotion-inducing claims. This, combined with the fact that social media platforms collect data on what kind of posts users spend the most time on and feed them content with similar characteristics, provides the perfect conditions for the spread of misinformation,” Daniel concluded.

This man understands the power and sanctity of grief.as someone who lost her son 6 years ago I know first hand the depth and breadth of grief and how something like this helps process that loss.

This man is really strong. Used to be a flowerist for 15 years, cried for more than once with the few customers who came for funeral flowering for a child. For the last one, being a new dad, I did it for free and had to take my week off shortly after the delivery. That kind of tragedy hits you right in the guts, I promise

I can hope she was very outspoken and also very intelligent. She had some opinions that made a lot of sense to a lot of people and these men felt threatened because she must have had better solutions to the goings on of the town. And clearly she had been voicing these things long before any election. Amazing.

After police and his mother were called, he WAS allowed to check out books. It's appropriate to name it for him because he overcame discrimination to pursue his academic interests, and it's indicative of his drive and determination. There's also the McNair Memorial Park in his hometown of Lake City, plus the McNair Aerospace Center at the University of South Carolina.

You are being too hard on your current self. When you know better, you do better; if you didn't grow, you'd still be confident in your younger self's take on life. You have shown great courage naming your shame but don't dwell in that too much. You are better and who you are supposed to be. I’m curious why wolves do this favor for ravens. What do they get out of it? It can’t be that they enjoy feeling useful, can it? Or the wolves enjoy the friendship of ravens? What an interesting factoid!

That unwavering vision of success, coupled with some quick thinking and innovation is a message for all of us. Sometimes the path we take is less than ideal and not what we envisioned but if we keep at it in the face of our obstacles we will succeed. And a great story of how we got there.

I think the impressive thing is not so much the training of roots - but that people do this when they might never get to walk on that bridge themselves (nust take many years - probably decades - before a new bridge will be stron enough).

Looks like an Osprey. These raptors, along with others are still persecuted in the wild in the uk by landowners. This is a scandal that should go up to the very top. raptors, including protected/endangered have “gone missing “ on and around the royal estates, but the police are actually prevented from investigating due to crown immunity.

I’m glad that someone, somewhere managed to do and be all the things my dad didn’t, and that the people in Officer Smith’s town had someone they could look up to and be proud of because we didn’t.

Many also still cling to long outdated beliefs (gay is bad, weed is a gate way drug, hell i still hear racists comments) so yes there are many ppl in the US who cant think critically. And yes it nearly lead to ppl in the capital killed. We are perfect and need to stop acting like we are.

@AngelWingsYT The problem with the quote is that it's xenophobic. It's not referring to individuals (like Trump or those who voted for him), it's implying that an entire population lacks critical thinking based on where they were born. ("A whole country of idiots.") Since we're all talking about the US, now, apparently, it's implying that everybody voted for Trump, which the majority did not. It's implying that the Us doesn't also have professors, and writers, and artists, and doctors, and just otherwise decent human beings, which is wrong. No one is arguing that the Us government is imperfect, but all messages like this do is sow hatred towards the citizens. The same holds true for Russia, where the news outlets have been being deliberately censored by the government for decades.

And yet, proportional to bodysize, hummingbirds lay the largest eggs of any bird, at around 17% for the smallest, the bee hummingbird - and this one did it twice. In human terms, that's like a 150Lb (68kg) woman producing two 25Lb (11.3kg) eggs within a couple of days at most.

Our garden has a hummingbird nest in our bushes every year. We have to go out with our cats when they young ones learn to fly. They are both curious and aggressive. The birds, not the cats. It brings a bit of joy and laughter to a rough existence

I think about the things my grandfather who was born in 1903 & told me tales of such things as driving across the wooden road in Arizona & the things that he experienced in his life what it must have been like experiencing the birth of so much..it's just fascinating. I am weirded out when I say I remember when we got our 1st microwave 🧓👴👵

Arizona has a wooden road, too? Wonder if it's connected to the one in California east of San Diego.

The main problem I have with such photos is the non-provability of unposed authenticity. Why can't we see the baby's face? Since children that age (almost) all look the same anyway, it wouldn't be a challenge, would it?

I grew up in a kit house! They were SO well designed! So functional! Our pantry had adjustable/removable slats that kept everything cool! And the shower was enclosed and had a vent at the top that just passively took moisture away without needing a fan! It also was really cool in triple-digit desert heat bc of how the windows and layout were designed!

It is an astonishing place. My Brother, who at the time was the UK Military Attache in Turkey, treated me, my ex wife and my late Mother to a trip there in 2006, this picture doesn't do it full justice and does nothing to convey the warmth of the people. Utterly astonishing, although I would say that if you do go, and like trying new and interestingly flavoured foods, don't go with two people who would rather starve than try something out of their gastronomic comfort zone ......

But the point is that Barbara Walters just died. Anne Frank and MLK have been dead for decades. They could have been alive all this time. They could still be alive, almost the same age as the oldest active cop. Anne Frank could have grown up and fulfilled the dreams she outlined in her diary--not died a sick child in a concentration camp. She could be on Twitter. Maybe she would have liked it, at least earlier versions of it. Or Tumblr. Or Bored Panda. Where would the US be if MLK had been there? Could he have influenced more social change? Would universal healthcare be on the table? They could have done so much more if they'd only had time.

At the last eclipse a few years back someone showed me something sort of similar by holding a colander over a piece of paper. Every hole where the light shone through made a tiny 'eclipse' like that.

We have a lot of eagles around here. There is a place a few miles from here that has one big tree in an otherwise empty (no trees) farm field. There has been a big eagle's nest in it for years. last summer as I was driving past there was an adult eagle at the nest and I briefly saw a couple of heads pop up. You can't see it too great from the road since it is high up but it's kind of fun to see eagles in it every year.

    RedMarbles

I'm wondering if this nest is no longer used, as it's on the ground, and meant to be displayed for educational purposes. If it is meant to be raised somewhere to be used, I would guess the human smell wouldn't be an issue only because it seems that the concern about human smells bothering animals seems to have been largely overblown in so many circumstances (ex. touching baby birds or fawns).

This is basalt and common for volcanic areas. Google the Hexagon Pool in the Golan Heights, Israel. There's a whole stream of these beautiful natural shapes, but the pool at the end is just gorgeous.

Whereas the pool at the end of the Giant's Causeway is chuffing cold, blustery, seriously choppy and you really, really wouldn't want to be in it !!

The amount of technologies, specialities, and advances that spun off from the invention of powered flight, to the moon landing is mind boggling. The butterfly effects of these technologies benefit all mankind. The moon missions employed TENS OF THOUSANDS, meaning they got paid, their children got educations, their families were fed. It did keep people out of poverty.

Nitpicking, but the real original cast would have included Eric Stoltz. He was the original Marty McFly who was fired and replaced by Michael J. Fox . They had to reshoot all of his scenes after he left.

I have been in that room. It was empty then of course. Shout out to any hunk of rope that lasts over 3,000 years. It was dry / musty / still in there so I guess that helped. And they probably treated the rope with something. Oil or wax or whatever. But that's still really impressive for what looks like a piece of hemp rope.

I politely disagree. I found it amazing how there was so much concrete and yet you would turn a corner in an ally and there is a Shinto gate in a garden. The green is there and pops up in the most unexpected areas. I'm not saying it is flush with greenery but its not as dystopic as your description makes it seem.
