But today we’re delving even deeper into feline celebrations, starting with Ancient Egypt and one of the most important cat figures, the goddess Bastet. She had the head of a cat but the body of a woman, and was the deity of protection.
Tabbies played several roles in Egyptian society, from being seen as guardians of the home that brought protection and good fortune to the household to representing the powerful kings and gods. One of the reasons for their popularity was their dual nature. On one hand, they are obedient, protective, and nurturing, and on the other, they can be fierce and aggressive. Together, these qualities, along with loyalty and independence, are what paralleled them to deities.

They were not only associated with the divine but they were also bred and sacrificed to the gods. Cats were often mummified and buried in elaborate coffins that later were offered to temples as a sign of gratitude to the deities. One mummy from the National Museum of Natural History is in the shape of an elegantly seated feline. The mouser was tightly wrapped in linen, and its features were painted in black ink.
To honor these pets, wealthy families dressed them in jewels and fed them fancy treats. More interestingly, cat owners would often shave their eyebrows as a sign of mourning for a lost companion and grieve until they grow back.

Do As I Say And As I Do
I once had to put myself in time out. My Yorkie, Lucky RIP, liked to lick the couch. He had to go to time out for doing so. My kids and I were playing and one said "I bet you won't lick the couch"! I said "hold my beer" jk...but I don't back down from a dare, dang it! Well, Lucky saw me and cut me a look...so I went to his bed and sat.

The Egyptian Mau is believed to be a breed that directly connects the modern world to the ancient one. It’s distinguished by its grace, flexibility, and the unique spots that cover its coat. The word “Mau” means “cat” in ancient Egyptian, highlighting the historical and cultural significance of these animals.

Meanwhile, in Japan, cats are celebrated in the form of the “Maneki-Neko,” or the beckoning cat. In the Land of the Rising Sun, felines embody the symbols of good luck, prosperity, protection, and wealth. The iconic “Maneki-Neko” is often seen in shop windows and homes as a figurine with a raised paw and a koban coin, beckoning customers or wealth toward it.
Japanese folklore also tells stories of “Bakeneko” and “Nekomata,” mythical cat creatures with supernatural abilities that include shapeshifting. They are portrayed as protectors and tricksters, tormenting humans and creating chaos everywhere they go. Which, to this day, evokes a mysterious sense of beauty around cats in modern Japan.

In Turkey, cats are esteemed companions, celebrated for their grace and intelligence. Their role in Turkish homes surpasses the household pet name - they are protectors, confidants, and symbols of good luck. This respect for them is reflected in folklore and literature, where they appear as figures of wisdom combined with mystery and allure.

Among the various breeds that run around Turkey’s streets, the Van Cat is a kind of feline that captures the essence of this country's affection for them. It’s distinguished by its white fur and colored markings that only appear on the head and tail. Perhaps the most interesting characteristic is its infatuation with water. Known as “swimming cats,” they are great in water, adding more mystery to their behavior.

Nowadays, in bustling Turkish coffee houses, you’ll often find cats lounging on the tables or purring somewhere comfortably tucked away in a corner. They have become a cherished part of coffee culture within the country, where they symbolize hospitality and relaxation and bring good luck to the establishment. In Istanbul, felines are so beloved that they have their own neighborhoods and caretakers who provide food and shelter.

Coming to an end, we’re finishing off with the royalty - the Siamese cat, which is known for its grace and nobility in Thailand. The bond between these felines and Thai royalty is rooted in centuries of history. Believed to be symbols of sophistication and charm, they were pampered and adored as palace pets, gaining their esteemed status.

They were also often presented as prestigious gifts in diplomatic exchanges, signifying honor and respect between nations. Furthermore, legends portray them as guardians of treasures within Thai palaces. But beyond the glitz and glamour, they were, at their core, cherished companions whose presence brought joy and comfort to kings and queens.

Dog owners: “This is my dog, Buddy.” Cat owners: “This my cat, Sparkleprincess Dorito Hedgehog.”
We should start a BP post where people put their cat's names! One of mine is a huge Russian Blue type, and I named him Tsar Ferdinand the Large. (Ferdinand because he is like Ferdinand the bull-- really chill and doesn't fight. )
That would be fun! The vets office now just rolls their eyes and asks for spellings when i bring in a cat. They have seen Dustbunny, Nuts, Greebo, Bumble, Squeaker, Harley, Nespelem and several others over the years.
Load More Replies...her name is Posideon Christmas Miracle, or Posie for short, long story, lmao
Our cat's name is "Stoli." Just like the vodka, because she is intoxicating.

Mom has a black cat that I named Obsidian. So now, naturally, his name is Sid. Or Siddy-Kiddy. Or Pretty-Kitty-Siddy-Boy. Or Fatso. Or my brother likes to call him a bone-in fur rug sometimes... And dad calls him Fire Engine.
My orange doofus (former stray who decided to move in with us a couple of years ago) is Buddy. His sister (shelter adoptee, believed to be Siamese mix) is commonly known as Allie, but is formally Princess Allie Razorfang Scissorpaws. Both also get called fuzzyface and similar, along with the occasional Dammit when they intentionally get in my way when I'm walking through the apartment or someone jams a claw into my skin.
I used to have a cat named The Reverand Doctor Bartholomew Oglethorpe. He had an online Doctor of Divinity degree.
My cat's name is Midnight, but it doesn't matter what I call her, she doesn't come anyway!
We dog owners are just as silly. One of my boys was "Mama Bxxxx's Baby Boy Bugs".....(name changed to protect the innocent)
Richard (we adults call him D**kFace when the kids aren't around on account of his face marking looking like a d**k and balls and his personality perfectly suits someone named Richard with that nickname, he can be a gentleman or a jerk amd you're m likely to get a jerk who demands snuggles) He's a tuxedo kitty with socks, and Honeybuns, our sweet brown/grey tabby kitty with golden eyes (named for her eye color and sweetness, she's the more playful of the two and won't hesitate to use her claws and teeth to guide your pets amd keep you from stopping) Richard, despite being the ruder of the two is the only one I trust alone with the kids as he actually has patience for their shenanigans and will run away to hide when reaching his breaking point before ever baring claw or toof to a little one, Honeybuns has scratched both of our younger girls (one for the disrespect of tail yanking and the other for simply existing near her lol, not bad cuts, just surface scratches gone within a day or tw
Sparkles the Unikitty, Sparky for short. (I was four at the time. Sparkles is gone now, my baby girl.)

I have to jump in this name thread. My cat is Boo, which is shortened from P**s in Boots, also call him Kimosabe, Boodinski, Das Bootanos, Sugar Britches...y'all get the idea. How lucky are we to have cats in our lives!?

We have Nitzie, but she also goes by: Floofy, Floofisha-Mulan, Fat-Cat-cia-bread, the Flerken, the Floofalina, among others, but most recently she was referred to as, “OMG, get off the bed if you’re going to hurk!”

I named one lil fluff ball Vilibru which stood for vicious little brute since upon meeting me he sunk his needle teeth into my index finger and I had a fever for 2 weeks after. Yes, I adopted him.
my dog's name is Baxter, but he is half goat, eats everything, so therefore his name is goat dog.
We had a Baxter, too. He was a Rat Terrier mix. We lost him to pancreatic cancer a few years ago. He was a sweet, good-natured boy.

I still miss the cat I grew up with, Pyret (female). My family had her from 1989 until 2008. She was there from when I was 13 until I was 32. Their current cat, Frans (male), I do like, but he's a bit of a little sh*t. And an accident-prone ditz (seriously, he has managed to lose his upper right fang (broke it so it had to be removed), lost a claw (we have no idea what happened) & damaged his tail so bad that half of it had to be amputated (now he looks kinda like a stubtail). Still a fun kitty.
I am so sorry for your loss of Pyret. It never quite stops hurting, does it? :( I lost my beloved gray girl, Wintressia, in 2018. I got her in 1998 when I was 16. She was 19 like your lady "tiny" :) I do not believe in "Heaven" but I like to believe in the Rainbow Bridge for our pets. Maybe Pyret was waiting over there to show Wintressia around ;) I have two cats now who are fortunately still young (8 and 3) but I know I will miss them terribly as well, even though the younger one is a bit of a little shít himself XD
Load More Replies...Sheesh, I had to scroll down about ten posts of "man does stupid shít because of this", "bridezilla does stupid shít because of that" and "the internet outrages due to whatever else" to find a wholesome one. BP has become more toxic over the last couple of years, but it's never been THAT bad, has it? I had basically two bad internet habits, one was playing flash games on kongregate (quit years ago) and BP. No tikfuck, no facebook, pinterest or whatever else. BP is the only one left because it made me smile. If they keep posting this toxic "hate either side but click me and generate ad revenue" cráp, that will break the camel's back soon.
Cheezeburger generally has a lot of feel-good kitty matter, too.
