No matter the grey hair, for our parents, we will always be babies. Hence, all the unasked advice on changing jobs, traveling abroad, getting a loan, you know it. But this time, we won't be talking about humans as we shift onto the animal kingdom to see what animal babies are like.

The obvious thing is how impawsibly cute they are. But other than that, for those who skipped biology (myself included), animal babies are somewhat of an unknown terrain. Do baby hedgehogs even have spikes? Do newborn gorillas resemble human beings? Baby sloths, are they just as cute and slow as adult sloths?

So Bored Panda has prepared for you quite a collection of pictures that should answer all these questions. Be prepared to make your heart melt, and don’t forget to upvote your favorite baby animals! Psst! More pictures of rare animal babies you probably have never seen can be found right here.

The babies don't have functioning stink glands until they're about 3 weeks old.

Someone gave me a grown skunk that sprayed him as he was getting it out of the live trap. He gave me tha cage he kept it in fot months ok n top of cement. Feed it cat food ! Some raw meat,... as soon as i put it in a pen with a dirt floor the smell left. It was not pet quality but not completely wild. After 3 months it got out. As far as I know it might still be here but I've never seen or smelled it around.

I had a guy friend who had a certified (legal) pet skunk. He bought her from a breeder & they surgically removed the scent gland. Once removed the skunk loses all its defenses; hence, if he/she gets out you can, unfortunately, know that they won't "make it" in the wild. I also noted upon holding "Mandy" that she still had what I considered a foul & unpleasant smell...certainly not as ripe as the all too familiar one we all know. It is musky but not in the "good" sense. I also heard that juvenile skunks have bad "squirting" control and their stench is heads above worse than their adult counterparts. Ugh....cute, yes...stinky....absolutely!!! And my son's 3rd grade teacher was paid an unwelcome visit by one who managed to enter their house via the "cat door".The spray was so intense that it caused teacher & wife to vomit IMMEDIATELY. They were fraught with tearing out the floor & lower cabinets as the smell permeated said objects. They had to get a hotel for a month during renovation.

This little skunk looks just like Pokey, a baby skunk my dad had rescued when its mother got hit by a car. My Dad thought we should keep her as a pet since it was motherless at a very young age and got the local vet to remove her scent glands... Pokey lived with us for about a year. She had not been spaded and when a handsome male skunk came a-courting the following spring, "nature called" and she left us for this wild guy...

This happened 60 years ago. There weren't any wildlife recovery centers back then where we lived. My father had her scent glands removed because he thought that the baby was too young to survive without its mother and that the only option was to keep her as a pet. We actually had to bottle feed her for awhile

We have an actual skunk rescue here where I live. Took my kids because it's part of a bigger rescue that also educates kids. Big mistake, huge. They've gone from wanting a ferret to wanting a skunk and they aren't getting either.

Babies don't smell, not sure if their scent glands are under developed or just can't spray skunky scent yet. Lol

The primary way that animals grow and develop is by building more cells. When an animal eats food, its body breaks the food down and uses it to fuel its energy requirements and build new cells through the process of mitosis. These new, or daughter, cells are often similar in size to the old, or parent, cells.

In order to produce more cells, animal cells divide in two. The process is a complex one since the parent cell has to produce new organelles for each resulting daughter cell. It then has to copy the genetic code as accurately as possible and transfer both copies of the genetic code into the nuclei of the daughter cells. In science, it’s called mitosis.

However, mitosis requires a lot of energy that comes from food, along with the raw materials for constructing more cells. The food that animals eat is then transformed into usable energy for cells or can be used to build new cells, which form tissues like skin and muscle. The process of growth involves eating food, breaking down food through digestion, absorbing nutrients from food, and building tissue.

The rate of growth of an organism has a direct impact on its ability to adapt to the environment. For instance, an increase in the rate of growth of fleshy parts of the fish fin would provide an opportunity for the fish to adapt more easily to terrestrial locomotory life than could a fish without this modified fin. Scientists believe that hence, it may play a role in evolution.
