Fashion Hits And Total Misses From The 2025 Academy Museum Gala
The Academy Museum Gala kicked off in California, and Hollywood’s who’s-who – dressed to impress or confuse – were in attendance.
The so-called “Met Gala of the West” featured the likes of Bowen Yang, who received the Vantage Award; Penélope Cruz, honored with her Icon Award; and director Walter Salles, who was given the Luminary Award.
Bruce Springsteen, unlike the latter, not only received (a Legacy Award) but also gave a performance at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
Also in attendance were Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, and Jeremy Strong, among others. Below, we will try to establish just why they were there.

Wow! She wears it very well. Everything's spot on--the hair, the make-up, the jewelry. This is one gown that doesn't need a necklace. The color and the style of the top, plus her lovely shoulders and collar bones are enough to hold the attention and quite elegant in their own right.
Zoey Deutch
Viola Davis
Color is amazing and suits her well, but the shape of the dress does not.
Not wild about the feather on the hem but otherwise it really suits her.
It would have been better without the sleeves and visible abdominal stitching, tighter internal side stitching would’ve created a better waist sillhouette
Lo e the blue velvet but it could stand to velvet a size bigger, looks like it's pulling at the seams.
Eva Longoria
Joey King
They are not, actually, The black fabric is sewn on to a sheer mesh. The "strings" are her b***s.

She really doesn't look happy. Her expression is more 'how did I let my stylist talk me into wearing this?'
She seriously needs to fire some people and hire somebody that knows what pretty clothes are.
There is a splotch of something on the lower left of the top that she cannot turn in.
Rachel Zegler
Makes her look short. It should be longer dress. Color is wrong for her too.
It's a shame because apart from the hem it's lovely.
Load More Replies...It's pink. Apart from that it's totally different,
Load More Replies...It's a great color - just doesn't look great with her skin color, imo.
Chase Infiniti
Beautifully made and fits her perfectly, the colour is OK but personally I'd have chosen something a little stronger.
The top half makes me think of the pleated paper cups you use for muffins and cupcakes.
I absolutely love the color and fabric as well as the workmanship. The drape is beautiful. I googled to see what's up with her hairline--it's weird. Her necklace is a snake! Very well made, a lovely piece, but a strange choice with that dress. https://www.instagram.com/p/DP_Xkq8DNaa/
I hate this accordion pleating that sticks up. Looks like I could wash my clothes on her bodice.
Addison Rae
I like it, the fit's lovely, but I wish she had put up her hair and had some sparklies around her neck. I wondered what the purple reflecting off the top was, and turns out it's a bit of purple silk inset, which is just strange. Why was it done? Unfortunately, it clashes with her lipstick. Her toe nails were painted with silver glitter, very cute. Anna Kendrick
I like it but think it’s missing something. Maybe a necklace or a different hairstyle would make it more exciting for a gala
She needs a little bit bigger hair to offset the volume of the dress on the bottom. I love the dress though.
Load More Replies...Cut too low for no purpose. Oh, look at that striking piece of ?chest? She has.
The dress would be great, but the print is giving wallpaper in an old house , ruins it for me
I guess. The dress flatters her waist and ankles, it's a lovely fabric, but the skirt has a too 50's June Cleaver vibe, and I don't think the cut of the bodice does nothing for her. Once again, do something with your hair to look like you tried, even if it's just a flower.
Olivia Wilde
..and ill fitting. But I give her Kudos for picking an outfit that doesn't show everything she was born with. 'wink, wink'.
Load More Replies...The dress is almost military cut, fairly severe, but she's got the look to carry it off. I think she's beautiful and très élégante! Googling other pics shows that the dress is cut well and fits her perfectly. Looks comfortable, too! I love that she mixes gold and silver for her bracelets, and they are exactly the right weight and style to complement the dress. Plus for pockets!!
Very elegant and understated, but not exactly a gala dress. More something that would be more befitting a high profile lawyer, a CEO etc.
Jeremy Strong
Jeremy Strong showed up to the event in a bright red suit with knife point pleats.
It cannot be denied that it was a bold choice that arrests the eye of the casual onlooker and may cause the feeling one gets right before they cry.
The Concession alum knows that feeling too, and came prepared for the wardrobe’s brilliance.
As seen in the photo, he brought dark glasses.
We do not know the inspiration behind the look, who made the shirt, or where the hard-sole black shoes came from.
Only that it was compiled by Loro Piana.
Such a beautiful suit yet without a tie or bow tie, agree with Panda McPandaface.
Load More Replies...It's a basic white shirt, the 80's/90's called and they want that horrible suit back.
Zoe Saldaña
Your description of the outfit and her name in the description don't match the person. She is Zoe Saldaña not Kravitz
It’s so odd that they’ve added descriptions to only a couple of the celebrities. And didn’t bother checking them for accuracy either.
Load More Replies...This is elegant. She wears it with grace and dignity. Nobody is looking at her tatas or hooha, and she's not walking around in something that screams 'look at me, I'm so cool and with it!" This is a beautiful woman, an adult that can go to any gala event and be appropriately dressed. Sometimes what is termed boring is timeless style.
There is more than 1 Zoe in Hollywood, you goofed the name and the dress description.....
She has always been gorgeous. Looks like somebody did a cut and paste on the description.
Laura Harrier
This breast whatever’s going on is simply awful, highlights already non-existent breast and wouldn’t fit a decent pair. Terrible design
Kate Hudson
I would like to love this Greek goddess look but the square points on the bodice annoy me a lot! Love the folding, love the way it drapes, love the length, but the cut on the top should have been fitted to her torso. Draping it over one shoulder would have been a bit much of the Greek look, but it would have been better than what this is. Love the earrings and the bracelet is sublime. She could have made an effort with her hair.
Zoë Kravitz
Zoë Kravitz rocked up at the event in a voluminous dress the color of decaying leaves at the bottom of a stagnant body of water or as the Daily Mail wrote:
She “hid her fantastic figure in so many ruffles and puffed fabrics that she was totally overwhelmed by her dress.”
Said dress was produced by Saint Laurent and really reminiscent of the proverbial missing curtains.
Excuse me, that gorgeous color is not "decaying leaves." It's a rich chocolate hue with a lighter bronze on top. Vibrant and lovely.
Absolutely love the color. It's sumptuous, and I'll bet it shimmers when she moves. I'm not a fan of ruffly things, but with her gamin looks and haircut, it suits her. The sleeves are bit much and should have been half that size. Reminds me of inflated airbags. I didn't find a front shot, but this instagram pic is a slightly different angle: https://www.instagram.com/p/DP-snT5julh/
I think if the sleeves were gone it would look better. The color is wonderful.
Load More Replies...I can't see past the dead eyes and slack expression. It reminds me of the Victorian photos of the dead.
Maude Apatow
Maude Apatow’s garb ticked all the boxes of a gown for a glitzy event like the “Met Gala of the West.”
Its cut fits the conventional hourglass template without getting too gaudy in the strings, frills or puffs department.
But to say that it was mesmerizing would be an understatement. There are scientific studies declaring what Prada did on the Euphoria actress’s dress a Spiral Motion Illusion in which viewers could become overwhelmed and anxious.
Fortunately there were no casualties reported.
The actress rounded off her look with earrings and a necklace by Cartier.
What stupid descriptions. “There are scientific studies declaring what Prada did on the Euphoria actress’s dress a Spiral Motion Illusion in which viewers could become overwhelmed and anxious.“
"Hey, guys! Look! My grandma sewed some rick rack on my dress to make it fancy!"
The square box thing is just weird. I could have been OK with just black stripes, and the yellow is actually a pretty color, but not with her complexion. The gown's color demands gold accessories not silver. Her haircut is severe and plain but actually works well with the earrings.
Tessa Thompson
Da'vine Joy Randolph
It works for me because she's a Big Beautiful woman. She can carry this. Love it.
Load More Replies...The question is why do you want all women to look as small as possible
Load More Replies...Laura Dern
Looks like she's wearing a chicken's b**t.There are very few gowns that can benefit from feathers, and this is not one of them. Hate the cuffs, does not match the style of the gown. Too many keyhole cutouts, and the shape/designs conflict--would have been more flattering without the one in the middle. With straight sleeves and no feathers, this might have worked, but would need a striking color wrap to keep it from being too blah. D**n, woman, do something with your hair!
Cara Delevingne
Cara Delevingne’s outfit speaks to an apparent theme of half-ways (halfway classy and halfway “what on earth is that thing?”) seen at the Academy Museum Gala.
She sported a glitzy number that was classy yet sensible enough to pass on any debutante. It was above the waistline that the trouble started.
We assume that the front did not have much to offer (by her standards), and so she turned her back to the camera.
Photographers snapped her looking over her shoulder to make sure they were getting the angle she wanted from them too—which was likely what appeared to be a representation of forest fungi crisscrossing her back and a rose-like appendage behind her neck.
She completed the look by Tamara Ralph with towering heels and Chopard jewelry.
That is call skinny fat. She should have worked out to show her back . 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
If she hadn't had her back turned to show of the hideous c**p on her back, I would have kind of liked the gown. It's plain, but flattering from the front. What certainly isn't flattering are the--flower ropes??- digging into the flesh on her back. The green thing on her neck is just weird, whatever the angle. Front view: https://www.instagram.com/p/DP-gq1ujr08/
Olivia Rodrigo
Oh, no! Her skirt has come off the corset and is sliding down! Quick, someone get her a pair of suspenders!
It would look a lot better if the skirt was around her waist instead of looking like it's falling down.
Mikey Madison
Who would have thought that showing your underwear could become so boring!?
Load More Replies...That would have been a very pretty over-gown with an opaque silver underdress although cut a bit low to be flattering. I agree with Sarah Bailey that the silver is beautiful, but it is not the right color for her skin. So basically, go back to bed, dear. If you decide to attend next year's Academy fête, wear something beside your negligee and fix your hair.
If you're going to wear a see-through gown wear underwear that matches your skin tone.
Charli Xcx
Not flattering, and the fabric and style is way to heavy for the lace. Looks like the lace was added just as a means to show her boobage. If you cut the lace off and hike the whole thing up, she might pass, although people aren't going to like the shiny fabric and black color. Her necklace accentuates the fabric, and her wavy hair works OK, à la Morticia Addams, but I still think it looks a bit untidy.
I definitely don't have an issue with nudity and look forward to the day that society is less prudish, but when perfectly normal/acceptable words like cràck, póó, and wîlly are frustratingly censored... please make it make sense!
Greta Lee
Logan Lerman
That's funny, but not really fair--OK, maybe a little wrinkled. The fabric is lush and the color's absolutely magnificent.
Load More Replies...Tucked-in tie? What he forget to untuck in the loo? And why wear an unironed shirt?
Love the color of the shirt but it needed to be either ironed ir steamed depending on the fabric.
Love the fabric and color of the shirt, but not sure about the style. The turned -back cuffs and off the shoulder sleeves make it look too big. That, with the baggy pants and the unshaven look just make everything look sloppy instead of polished. The tucked tie is simply ridiculous. So close.
Michelle Monaghan
Actress, Michelle Monaghan, went in the direction of fairy tale land maybe trying to show Disney what they out on missed casting Gal Gadot as the evil Queen in Snow White and not her.
The dress that was described as being inspired by “giant floral floats” came from Carolina Herrera’s 2025/2026 Spring Collection.
And aptly so, because so floral was it that it looked like it should be paired with antihistamines lest the wearer succumb to a full-on pollen allergy paroxysm.
Maybe it did; we noticed it has pockets.
The Kiss Kiss Bang Bang alum rounded off the look with conservative jewelry from Tiffany & Co.
My gran had a doll wearing something like that for hiding the spare toilet roll under.
I think she carries it well. Do I like it, no but does she wear it with confidence, YES.
Yes! She has tons of confidence in her ability to pull this off, she loves her pockets (me too) and she's laughing at the people laughing at her, because she's having fun.

It's almost like she forgot to bring the appropriate shoes for this outfit and was stuck wearing the only pair she had with her.
The dress is fine until mid thigh, and then the bottom is hideous. Did they run out of fabric? The ruffles are very romantic and feminine, and then some idiot decided to put a tailored silver stripe across a midi hem? Just. No. Fix the skirt and shoes, put up her hair, and add a simple gold chain necklace and this would have been a nice outfit.
Renate Reinsve
Naomi Watts
We think Naomi Watts’ smile when she posed for the photo matched her outfit.
But we are also wondering if Doctor Hoffman’s “Bicycle Day” experiment would have rendered the same image had he not climbed on his two wheeler after dosing lysergic acid diethylamide, and instead explored the broom cupboard and stared at the mop.
Getty Images credits the long flowing plain one piece that is visually safe (until it gets to a place below the knees) to Balenciaga.
We credit said area below the knees to a magical contraption out of the movie Avatar.
Also Watts’ pose makes it terribly difficult to take the image seriously.
See, I kind of think she looks like a straw coming out of a vanilla milkshake.
Load More Replies...I've worn a dress just like this... last time I went in for my annual checkup, minus the feather trim.
I wouldn't think so, but you're right, it couldn't hurt.
Load More Replies...Maggie Gyllenhaal
It looks like they took one of those hats from Disney world, that looks like Mickey Mouse's ears and just stretched it out into that garment they're calling a dress.
Poor woman. She looks like a poverty-stricken French consumption patient that couldn't afford jewelry, makeup or a hair stylist. However, she was able to borrow her nurse's white shoes and a set of NFL shoulder pads for the big day. She looks disguised like she's asking herself how she managed to get talked into wearing this travesty. Once again, if she had the right personality to pull it off, she could have found a silk and diamond Minnie Mouse hair bow, a Disney Store MM necklace, and partied ironically with Michelle Monaghan and a couple of the others who decided to subvert the Academy paradigm.
Some actresses sign contracts with fashion designers. They are basically modelling new couture dresses for the designer. Quid pro quo, the actresses don't have to buy the clothes, but I don't think they can choose them either. Sometimes you just have to suck it up.
I am not sure i have ever seen Maggie Gyllenhaal in a dress that looked good on her. She always looks kind of frumpy.

Yeah, I don't understand what's going on at her waistline.
Load More Replies...The blouse and the skirt, yes. But whatever is peeking out around her mid-section ruins the entire look.
When you have a board meeting at 9am and a Salsa dance lesson at noon.
Looks like she just dug something out if the back of her closet from years ago.
Monica Barbaro
A Complete Unknown actress, Monica Barbaro, showed face (and a lot of linen) at the Academy Museum Gala.
She was snapped amid-stride in what may have been a two-piece garment in which the top and bottom sections appeared interchangeable.
It came with two trailing black bows and bouquets of white flowers just below her middle.
She tied off the flowing white Dior ensemble with black suede heels matching her hair and De Beers jewelry.
Invented in the 1960s and called a "bumbleshoot".Still just as hideous.
Rebecca Hall
Her top looks like it is painted on. That's why the black bar. It took me a second to figure it out.
Load More Replies...Google pics show the black bar is certainly necessary because her tata buttons are all over the place. The back and sides are totally n**e with the stupid seams showing. Looks cheap. If the camo top would have been a tunic, she would have had a bra or at minimum, n****e shields, and the skirt would have been pewter with silver shoes, maybe. Pair that with a cool silver necklace and bracelets. Her black hair is appropriate with the casual feel of the camo pattern.
This reminds me of a children's medical book that explains torso anatomy. Is the horizontal black bar part of the BP censorship or is it meant to be there?
Taylour Paige
Taylour Paige showed up at the event wearing a lace. The bodice part took on the appearance of a Cold War era bikini, but it may have been a separate garment from the outfit's bra—its all very confusing.
Then around the Zola actresses neck was a floral thing, matching in color, that may or may not have been intended as a bow. Or necklace.
The outfit has what appeared to be bolts of black lace redundant in their function (as a supposed garment) of covering the body, and leaves little at the mercy of the imagination.
Sources say the garment was from Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2008 ready-to-wear collection.
Ugh! All the lace and fru-fru stuff looks silly. And is that feathers along her hips as well? She's not a petite or super feminine gal, and that stuff doesn't flatter her at all. Why does she needs a neck gaiter? Nothing private is really showing, but lace has the connotation now of nakedness, and it seems suggestive. That's not a good look for her upper thighs and the peep hole in the chest area looks silly. I like her earrings, makeup and hair. She's a beautiful woman, and the dress doesn't do her justice.
When you have heavy legs, why show them off in a see through skirt?
Elle Fanning
Elle Fanning went classy with her power bun and plain, swanky pastel pink dress-type-thingy.
We believe it was a full dress until James Patrick “Sulley” Sullivan’s little crimson-colored cousin, whom she may or may not have taken with her as a date to the event that night, got hungry and ate the front of her dress.
The photo shows the little “scarer” still cowering between her legs, likely camera shy.
An alternative explanation is that the red fluffy thing adorning her front is actually part of her outfit, and if one were to strain one’s imagination really hard, one could think that it was something designed by a fashion house like Balenciaga.
But fact is sometimes stranger than fiction, and so, to go with the jewelry from Cartier, the dress is actually a Balenciaga contrivance.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian was present, dressed by Maison Margiela. She opted for the skin-colored gown with a very strange-looking corset.
She topped it off with a heavy-looking spinel gemstone necklace and rings to match.
And then she gave her face the brown paper bag treatment.
So we’re here wondering: did she forget to do her makeup or get fashion tips from Ye?
Was it even her, or are we just going to have to take Getty at their word?
Also, the Louvre in Paris was just robbed and jewels went missing…
We are not accusing anyone, but there she was at a(nother) museum, with (a lot of) jewelry and a mask covering her face.
Remember when she wore that black t-shirt that covered her face at the met? She's run out of creative ideas.
Load More Replies...Whoever it it the way the dress is cutting into her it's given her another set of boobbs.
Best picture of that face I have EVER seen! And you can see her tacky tattoos through the dress
Fashion Status ... as in Terrible. Wow! Many of them seriously need #sane Image Consultants
If I can see your pants and t**s through the dress, it isn't a f*****g dress - it's 'tell me I'm pretty'! Are celebs seriously THAT thirsty, that they can have global fame, huge careers, millions of dollars, and still feel the need to walk around with everything hanging out just for attention? Get some self worth, Jesus... 🙄
So self-worth is defined by how much you can hide your body ?
Load More Replies...If you gotta let your nips or t1ts hang out, you aren't dressing for style, you are seeking terrible attention. Enough with the ugly see through garments and the undergarments showing
Nothing is ever "Must-See" or "Must-Have". My life is quite complete without them, thanks.
All of those so-called designers need to ho back to school and learn something.
