Are you a globetrotter? Do you like when your blood runs cold and the hair on the back of your neck stands up? If so, then you may be one of those tourists who get a certain kick out of exploring allegedly haunted places, like spooky castles in Europe or abandoned asylums in the US.
But that’s not all. You may have visited some locations linked to tragedies (like Chornobyl, to make an example) and enjoyed learning more about the related events. Don’t let that guilt settle in your stomach, though — humans naturally crave knowledge. It gives us a deeper understanding of the world and the history we (luckily) didn’t witness, even if these stories can be too much to digest for some.
When it comes to traveling, we’re drawn to the uncommon and unusual things that give our destinations character and purpose — although they may be a little more than we bargained for. But this type of tourism isn’t always associated with tragedy or disaster. Sometimes it can just be a creepy place that gets your adrenaline going. And trust us, there are plenty of those out there!
Whether you’re into urban legends and haunted houses, spooky museums, ghost-filled graveyards, or more sensitive locations that are cemented in our minds for their tragic past — rest assured, you’ll find what you seek right here.

Gates Of Hell, Turkmenistan
A crater deep in a natural gas field is just the kind of place we’d expect to find Satan himself hanging out. It was set alight in 1971 to prevent the emissions of poisonous gases. The gases were estimated to burn out in a few weeks, but the crater is still on fire after 50 years.
I found this extremely wastful while people are paying high energy bills....
i know where we will find the next Dark Soul Boss in real life now.
It's not so much this as Turkmenistan is currently under rule of a brutal tyrant who rivals Kim jong un in narcissism, brutality, paranoia, and separatism. Traveling to Turkmenistan as an outsider is dangerous in general
There's a Dark Tourist episode where they visited Ashgabat. Enormous marble buildings and statues, but it's eerily empty.

Ready for the deadliest hike in the world? Located in Shaanxi Province, this terrifying route is famed for being the most dangerous hike. Though no official statistics are kept, it’s been estimated that around 100 people have found death on the walk.
No they moved it to the bottom of the hill so people can buy in advance :)

It was packed with (mostly Chinese) tourists in early June, took a while to even get to the start... very steep descent to get there (see pic). The planks were sturdy, and the safety harnesses clipped to the chain worked well. The tricky part was going around someone. Looked like a very long drop! 41A677DB-1...b-jpeg.jpg
This is how my dad went to school every day (According to him). We lived in Philadelphia Pa. USA
Yes. I've done it. It's absolutely terrifying. You have to buy your own safety rope. Then there are three sections- the upper section has guard rails, the middle section is the one pictured, and the lower section, which is frankly beyond crazy- there are no planks at all in places and you have to inch along some footholds cut out the rock. And to cap it all off the path doesn't go anywhere, so you have to come back the same way you went out. The other paths up Huashan are much more friendly, but nearly as steep as ladders in places. Thing is THOUSANDS of people use these paths each day. Nobody seems particularly bothered by them- you'll see tourists scaling the steps in ordinary street clothes and trainers. I actually felt a bit over-dressed in hiking gear!

If you’re looking for a place that will make your blood freeze, the Catacombs of Paris might be just the spot. The catacombs are a vast underground ossuary that holds the remains of 6 million people, created to fix the problem of Paris’ overflowing cemeteries. As you walk through the catacombs, you’ll see a sign that reads “Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort” (“Stop! This is the empire of Death”).
I think the bigger problem is that the Paris Catacombs are a massive labyrinth, and people have gotten lost and have never been found. Though people stealing human skulls and bones is pretty terrible as well, in a different way.
Load More Replies...It's actually a pretty cool place to visit, albeit bloody difficult to find. The entrance is the an unidentified kiosk. We almost gave up looking for it.
What about The Killing Fields in Cambodia. You literally walk on human bones sticking out of the round. It is absolutely horrific! There is also the spire made of skulls and the tree where babies were hurled against to kill them. That place still haunts me. I just hope a place like that (and there are too many all across the world) teaches one lesson: that it must never happen again.
Oh my goodness! Don’t look it up everyone, it’s horrifying. It can’t happen again.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, West Virginia, USA
Originally designed to hold 250 people, this asylum ended up housing over 2,400 patients. Back in those days, patients could be admitted for even the most trivial reasons. These included asthma, laziness, and even greediness, which led to an overwhelming number of accepted patients and a shortage of staff members and beds. Now, tours in the facility give visitors a chance to see how people lived — or better, tried to survive — in this creepy building.
Excellent view, but remember to ask for a room with no screaming.

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
Edinburgh Castle’s history as a royal residence, military garrison, prison, and fortress is so rich that it is literally bursting with tales of the past — some particularly grisly. We’re not gonna spoil much, just know that most of them involve ghosts, brutal executions, a gruesome underground city, and a haunted graveyard.
Edinburgh is one of the greatest places on Earth. I absolutely love it there. Scotland is just gorgeous, and the people are simply the greatest human beings, with a fantastic sense of humor. My only complaint about the whole country is that I don't live there. Also, the weather is a bit nuts.

The view of the castle from pretty much anywhere in the city never fails to take my breath away
I always wanted to know why paintings are placed so high? I have trouble seeing detail that far.
I’ve been there a lot. My grandfather lives in England. Really fun place to visit. Not really haunted in the daytime, but I’ve never been there at night
The only scary thing about this place is how flipping expensive it is to visit :)
Get a historic Scotland membership - it makes going really cheap. We have the family card and it's under a tenner a month - its been great for getting kids out the house on random weekends

When notorious criminals such as Al Capone and Willie Sutton were held there, you know you have a historic landmark in front of you. Operational until 1971, it was famous for its solitary confinement system: inmates lived alone, ate alone, and were even hooded whenever they had to leave their cell. As with most abandoned places, it has been transformed into a haunted house, and its authentic environment makes for an instantly immersive experience.
I've worked in Philly for over 30 years, the penitentiary is pretty awesome historical landmark. Here's an aerial view. EASTERN-ST...940890.jpg
I miss the storming of the penitentiary we used to do on Bastille Day. Merrymakers from around the city would gather at Eastern State and there would be music and drinking along with a drag cabaret re-enactment of the French Revolution. Then Marie Antoinette would yell "Let them eat Tastykake" and we would get showered with the official junk food of Philadelphia. I would wear my best Parisian peasant rags, and get very drunk shouting "Vive la révolution et vive les français!" and my friends and I would sing "La Marseillaise" or at least as much as we could remember in our condition. Good times had by all. July 14th just hasn't been the same since. We still have the Mummers, although you have to be up early and often in freezing weather for that one.

Winchester Mystery House, California, USA
Often cited as one of the most haunted places in the world, Winchester Mystery House actually had a pretty normal past. Owned by Sarah Winchester, widow of magnate William Wirt Winchester, the house became a tourist spot following the woman’s death. We cannot confirm whether it’s a real haunted house, but the countless rumors and myths, added to the Victorian and Gothic architecture style, make the mansion a must-see for any horror fan.
Sarah was obsessed with the occult. Most of the things are multiples of 13s she was told if she ever stopped building that she would die. And that she was being haunted by the spirits of all the American Indians that the Winchester rifle murdered. She was also very short and all the steps feel really weird when you're walking on them because they were designed for her stature. I don't find it creepy at all it's a beautiful place and really cool to visit.
All the stuff about her being obsessed with the occult is urban legend created to make it seem more interesting to tourists. In reality, she kept adding on as a way to give people work during hard times. There is a Skeptoid episode that explains in pretty well--look it up and hear for yourself before you downvote me.

Its an interesting place. A combination of money, guilt, pseudoscience, and mental illness.
The sad part is, Sarah wasn't the crazy old bird people thought she was. Watch the video on the Winchester House by Kaz Rowe!
I was just going to recommend that video-- thank you for sharing. People like to depict Sarah as this crazy occultist who was haunted by the spirits of the dead when she was really a highly educated society woman who was dealing with incredible grief and loss.

Island Of Dolls, Mexico
People usually have their own “bucket list” destinations. And then there are the “I’m not sure if I want to go there” destinations. The Island of Dolls in Mexico is definitely an example of the latter. Here, Julian Santana Barrera, the owner of the island who passed away in 2001, scattered dolls everywhere — he believed they would chase away the spirit of a young girl who drowned years ago.
I don't know why the OP has said they're supposed to scare the spirit of the young girl away... they're supposed to APPEASE her. That's what the guy's own... nephew? said on several shows I've seen that covered it.

Things like this always makes me think. - how much time is a proper amount for turning crime into entertainment? I’m no judgy here, genuinely wondering (gotta admit I’m a true crime-fan, but sometimes it just feels… wrong…)
Particularly considering how much those women suffered. If the mystery were ever truly solved, the interest would fade away quickly.

I’d lived a few months in Germany, about 40 years ago, and it was incredibly clean even in the cities - for that matter, my ex took me to the red light district (thinking to shock me, I think. Didn’t work, hard to shock, except how bad the stage show was). But even that was clean with no graffiti. 5 years later I moved to England. My first sight of the Martyrs Memorial made me want to go home and get a scrub brush.
I’ll make a shameless plug for the London Walks Jack the Ripper tour. We did it a couple years ago and our guide was fantastic.

Brighton Asylum, New Jersey, USA
Now an industrial warehouse hosting haunted house attractions on Halloween, it was once an asylum with a history of disappearing people, harsh conditions, medical experiments, and brutal violence. No wonder the facility closed down in 1952 following an investigation. After years of decadence, this utterly scary place reopened in 2011 as a haunted attraction.
Agree, decadence is totally the wrong word in this context. Decay, decrepitude, deterioration, disrepair, neglect, and abandonment would all make far more sense.

Port Arthur, Australia
Port Arthur is the location of the worst massacre in modern Australian history. In 1996, Martin Bryant killed 35 people and wounded 23 others in a brutal mass shooting — which led to significant changes in Australia’s gun laws and extensive restrictions on all firearms. The place, now a UNESCO site, also served as one of the penal sites built during the British Empire.
Let me get this straight- they had a mass shooting and then the gun laws were changed to make it harder for numbnuts to get guns? Weird, right? (Guess where I am, win a prize!)
What no clearly mental illness is the only thing to blame. /s *proceeds to do nothing about mental health*

Lizzie Borden House, Massachusetts, USA
This 19th-century home was the site of one of America’s most famous unsolved murders. In 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally killed in their home. Their daughter Lizzie was the prime suspect but was acquitted at trial due to a lack of evidence. Today, visitors can tour the house where it all happened — and even sleep there! According to Martha McGinn, one of the previous owners of this renewed bed-and-breakfast, the room where Abby Borden was found dead is the most requested room.
Lizzie Borden took an axe, And gave her mother forty whacks, When she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one.

Tower Of London, England
Located on the north bank of the River Thames, the Tower has a reputation for its grim atmosphere and as a place of torture and death. Night-shift workers at the Tower of London have reported seeing ghosts belonging to nobles from the past, including Anne Boleyn, Henry VI, Lady Jane Grey, and Margaret Pole.
I've been all over that place in the day and at night; even walked through the halls not open to visitors (for academic research and then at an academic conference). I can report with absolute certainty there isn't a single haunted corner in the Tower. I was even in a prison cell late at night all alone. Gettysburg Battlefield, Pennsylvania, USA
Gettysburg is the site of the Civil War’s bloodiest battle, with more than 50,000 estimated casualties, and a turning point for the conflict. Visitors are left with a sense of dread as they walk through its grounds and learn more about its history.
The civil war was dreadful, period. The aftermath was, in many ways, worse.
Was Gettysburg a turning point for the war? Perhaps politically it was, and it did prevent Lee's army from continuing its march into Union territory. But militarily? IDK. The bloodiest period of the war was after Gettysburg, not before it. I would argue that the fall of Vicksburg and the fall of Atlanta the following summer, were bigger turning points militarily. Vicksburg gave the Union full control of the Mississippi River, and split the Confederacy in half. The Union suffered similar casualties, but had larger population bases to recruit from. It was definitely an important battle though, and the first clear victory over Lee's army. It was though the bloodiest battle the United States ever fought as well, with nearly as many casualties over the 3 days of fighting than in the whole Vietnam conflict (not including the Vietnamese who died). I'm no civil war buff though, so others may have a stronger opinion than me.
It was literally the turning point, the point at which the South went from offense to defense because they had been defeated.

Just checked the rates. Cheapest room is around 522 a night. 2 two bedroom lux suite with living room is 3500 a night. Would you pay that for a once in a lifetime opportunity? One of those, "I know it's a lot but I am going to do it cause you only live once" kinda thing?
Banff itself is breathtaking too. A must see if your in Alberta. It's such a beautiful province.
I will look these up, as this looks like a place in which I would like to honeymoon,
Didn't stay there ($$$$$), but had lunch & enjoyed the grounds & building for a day. Positively breathtaking!!!
Akershus Fortress, Norway
Take a medieval castle, and make it spooky. That’s Akershus Fortress for you! It’s considered one of the scary places in Norway with the highest level of ghost activity, and this is more than enough reason for us to want to visit it.
The Norway pavilion at Epcot/WDW in Florida named it's restaurant Akershus.
The Queen Mary, Long Beach, California, USA
The Queen Mary is a stately ship-turned-hotel in Long Beach, California. The ship was first christened in 1934 by Queen Mary herself and was retired in 1967. Following the Queen Mary’s permanent docking in California, people started to spread stories about the ship being haunted. Unfortunately, the hotel and its attractions are temporarily closed for repairs to keep it from sinking, so you’ll have to wait some more before visiting this creepy travel destination!
She’s just like: y’all legit think I’m haunted? Smh. You should be worried about me sinking if these repairs aren’t done in time-
I've been here a number of times back in the 1990's. Don't know about now, but then it was a destination venue that people rented for big weddings, bar mitzvahs, and corporate events. I stayed in one of the rooms for one event; got kinda crazy late at night with the crowd that was there, but no one saw any of the famous ghosts.
It's rather neglected. I believe the swimming pool not long collapsed.
Load More Replies...Not that creepy. Just fly over it and land at Lond Beach Airport, then take a tour. It just looks like an old ship.
Nah, this one I believe. I’ve followed these two YouTubers Sam and Colby for years and here’s where they really started to believe in the paranormal. And something was answering them when they attempted to make contact.
Load More Replies...I've been there - it didn't feel creepy at all. It was just run-down and sad.
I stayed there years ago and was greatly annoyed by the knocking noises coming from inside the closet of my room at night. The knocks were like someone lightly knocking with a closed fist. The TV in the room was always on when I came back to the room after I was out of it for a while, but that could have been careless maids, too.
I visited with my mother for a War Brides convention - managed to sneak down into the depths and photographed much of the wonderful decadence (most people do not know that the Queen Mary made most of its money in steerage where the poor people traveled)
Raynham Hall, Norfolk, England
This location provided possibly the most viral ghost photo of all time, the “Brown Lady” descending the staircase. For centuries, there have been unsettling suggestions of this ghostly figure in a brown dress wandering through the hallways of Raynham Hall. The haunting became famous when photographers from Country Life magazine claimed to have captured it on film.
The Brown Lady was photographed in 1936. Here's the picture. Raynham-Ha...558ea8.jpg
First the white lady (aka Karen) and now the brown lady? I’m beginning to see a pattern…
One If By Land, Two If By Sea, New York, USA
What is now a chic Manhattan restaurant housed in a landmark building was once Aaron Burr’s carriage house, a creepy location with a dark past of prostitution, unsolved disappearances, and death. It’s said there are more than 20 spirits in the building today — the most famous being those of its former owner, Aaron Burr, and his daughter Theodosia.

It can’t get creepier than this. Built in the 1800s, Sallie House is said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl named Sallie, who died there during an excruciating surgery for appendicitis. According to the story, Sallie’s mother brought her there because of severe abdominal pain. Dr. Charles Finney believed it was appendicitis and cut into her before the anesthetic took effect, killing her. The story hit the national spotlight after being featured on several paranormal TV shows.
Oh my gosh! I live close to the Sallie House! I’ve been wanting to go!!! Sam and Colby (who used to live in area) recently went there! They were sitting right at that table when… well I won’t spoil it for people who haven’t seen the video :). It’s pretty creepy!
I guess I need to know more before I would think it was scary now. Her "operation" sounds dreadful - but I would come back too and be furious if it happened to me.
Casa Loma, Toronto, Canada
Toronto has its own really majestic castle that legends say could actually be haunted. We can’t confirm the claims, but we know for sure that Casa Loma is a spectacular spot for visitors — and a favorite filming location for movies and TV shows as its Gothic architecture provides a unique backdrop.
Yeah no it's not haunted :/ most of the time it's a bunch of 13 year old boys being stupid
Every school within 100 miles, even over the border.

Bhangarh, one of Rajasthan’s most famous forts, is a magnet for ghostbusters and curious tourists who visit with one question in mind: Is it really haunted? There are several stories behind why this city turned into ruins overnight. Still, employees and locals say there’s nothing too spooky about the fort — the place gets unsafe for visitors after sunset only because of the wild animals. Still, the fort’s eerie aura attracts millions of tourists every year.
oh totally. I was there in 2017 and it's just got a weird, cold, bad vibe.
Ohio State Reformatory, Ohio, USA
Made famous by the movie The Shawshank Redemption, the reformatory was closed in 1990 after a federal court decided to shut it down due to the inhumane conditions inmates were subjected to. During its long history, it’s estimated that more than 200 people died here. Despite demolishing most buildings, the ex-reformatory offers ghost-hunting tours and special events hosted by famous ghost hunters, celebrities, and historians. Around Halloween season, the building hosts a haunted house.
One of the few times that the movie was far better.

Marquette Harbor Lighthouse, Michigan, USA
“What is that girl looking at over there in the lighthouse?” That’s what many people wondered while looking towards the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse. The problem is, this child is not… real. The number of reported sightings is endless, all talking about the ghost of a young girl whom the myth says was abandoned by her parents. Active since 1853, the lighthouse is rumored to have a history of keepers resigning abruptly after a short time.
I've always loved lighthouses, but I daresay I could give this one a pass.
Talbott Tavern, Kentucky, USA
The Old Talbott Tavern is impressive for more than one reason. Renowned for being the oldest building in Kentucky to still stand tall and proud, it has never closed down since its inauguration in 1779 and has been a staple of the community ever since. It’s rumored to have guests that never checked out, and every room is named after a famous (or infamous) person who’s still haunting it. If you’re looking to stay in a haunted hotel, Talbott Tavern has got you covered.
Dock Street Theatre, Charleston, South Carolina
Rumored to be haunted, the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, South Carolina, once played home to a very different tragedy. It’s said that Nettie, a former prostitute who longed for love, died here after being struck by a lightning bolt, and her spirit has haunted the theater since then.
Castle Of Good Hope, Cape Town, South Africa
Straight from the 17th century, this castle — built by enslaved people — is known as the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa. Workers and visitors have reported hearing voices, footsteps, and ringing bells in the windowless dungeon and the building’s narrow corridors.
Hotel Del Coronado, California, USA
Built in 1888, the Hotel Del Coronado is thought to be one of the few still-standing wooden Victorian beach resorts in the world. On the outside, it may look like any other hotel on the beach, but some rumors and legends claim the place is haunted by the ghost of Kate Morgan, whose body was found with a bullet in the head on the hotel’s exterior staircase in 1892. The circumstances of her death are unclear.
It's also where Some Like it Hot was filmed in 1958. Here's Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemon on the beach. marilyn-an...7-jpeg.jpg
Sica Hollow State Park, South Dakota, USA
Sica (pronounced “shee-chah”) is a Dakota word for “bad” or “evil”, seemingly because of the iron-tinted water of its river streams, which makes it look like water turned into blood. This should be enough to make it a pretty creepy travel destination, but the place also holds a series of eerie legends.
Calcasieu Courthouse, Louisiana, USA
The spirit of Toni Jo Henry, the first and only woman executed by electric chair in Louisiana, is said to linger in this courthouse. She was sentenced to death after trying to help her husband escape jail, killing a man in the process. Some have reported they could still smell her burning hair. Her case gave rise to several popular books and movies, including A Savage Wisdom and Stone Justice.
That's where they electrocuted her. I live here. There's stories about another courthouse around here that are waaay worse. Yes, they are both haunted.

Out of all the spooky locations you may have seen, the Armour-Stiner Octagon House in New York could become your new favorite. Known for its octagonal shape, the place is as creepy as it is beautiful, with a wonderful color palette and a unique interior that really stands out. Legend says the area is haunted by a “lady in white” who once inhabited the house — however, she’s known as a friendly ghost. Who knows, maybe the building’s beauty had a positive effect on her.
Don't ever go near Halloween time because all tours book up well in advance and traffic in the general area gets frustrating. This is located near Sleepy Hollow so Halloween is a big deal pulling in extra tourists
Kehoe House, Savannah, Georgia
Awarded the “most romantic hotel” in the United States, Kehoe House used to be home to Annie and William Kehoe and their kids. Following their death, the house acted as a funeral home, providing a perfect resting place for ghosts who, some say, follow you around during your stay.
Lake Placid, New York, USA
Few places are as peaceful looking as Lake Placid, but a mysterious death changed the world’s perception of this location. In 1933, Mabel Smith Douglass rowed on the lake and never returned. The police never found her, leaving the case unsolved. At least until 1963, when a group of scuba divers found her corpse in the lake with an anchor tied to her neck, her body almost perfectly preserved thanks to the freezing temperatures. Over the years, people reported seeing a ghost around the area, making Lake Placid a renowned “haunted place.”
I was wondering if anyone else remembered that movie!

Like many castles around the world, the Château de Brissac is said to have its own resident ghost. “La Dame Verte” or “Green Lady” is said to be the spirit of Charlotte de Brézé, the illegitimate daughter of King Charles VII and his mistress.
It has been mentioned before, but i love how in Europe it is "insert color here" Lady waiting for her sailor husband and in the States, the ghosts are people who suffered untold amount of pain and are now looking for revenge.
The Duc de Brissac and his family still live in the Castle so I guess there's always someone to talk with !
The château is open to the public for tours and overnight stays in its guest rooms.
Lawang Sewu, Semarang, Indonesia
Abandoned places never fail to creep you out, and Lawang Sewu makes no exception. Decades of neglect resulted in the building becoming the subject of otherworldly rumors. The Indonesian horror flick Lawang Sewu: Dendam Kuntilanak, released in 2007, cemented these urban legends into the national consciousness.
The Driskill, Texas, USA
The Driskill, named the most haunted place in Texas, has welcomed many noteworthy guests, such as Louis Armstrong and President Lyndon B. Johnson. The hotel is said to house several restless spirits, including its founder and a child who fell from the staircase while chasing her ball and died in 1887.
Hopefully some of the other ghosts play catch with her, is she still likes it.
So haunted they changed the spelling? I don't know about this place, and I'm plenty willing to believe the OP spelled it correctly, but "Driscoll" is a very common placename in the U.S., and a very common surname throughout the English-speaking world.
St. Augustine Lighthouse, St. Augustine, Florida, USA
It’s no secret that Florida is a hotbed of interesting travel destinations, and St. Augustine Lighthouse is among them. Some visitors come here to satisfy their curiosity for unearthly creatures, to discover if the stories they’ve heard are legit, and if the lighthouse is actually as spooky as they say.
Tao Dan Park, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Vietnam has something for everyone — including the supernatural. Marked as one of the most haunted places in the world, Tao Dan Park comes with an eerie backstory, shared by a UK travel guidebook. But locals swear they’ve never heard the story.

King’s Tavern is not particularly creepy compared to other submissions on this list, but it totally compensates for this with its tragic past. In the 1930s, the skeletons of three people were found in the wall behind the fireplace. One of them was believed to be that of Madeline, a woman killed by the tavern owner’s wife after she discovered her husband’s affair with Madeline. The place is now closed.
I went there while it was still a restaurant. I’m not surprised it closed. The food was pretty awful, the beer flat and warm and the staff was downright nasty. Definitely one of the five worst dining experiences of my life.
Madeline probably didn't enjoy her experience there, either.

Could Providence City Hall, built in 1878, be haunted? Some people think so. There have been reports of strange footsteps and other paranormal activities here. There’s also a rumor that 12 men died during the construction of this creepy location. And that fact helps spread stories from people who claim it’s infested with ghosts.
Yup. Grew up in E. Providence and been to here a few times. I and I've always felt uneasy in this building, like someone was creeping behind me, even when I was the only one in a room.

Not even these idyllic places are saved from eerie stories and myths. Three ghostly presences are said to wander the grounds of the Camp Helen State Park — Rose, a young woman killed after her ship ran aground during a storm; a young boy who drowned in Lake Powell; and a grumpy captain who intimidates people to get away from his house.
Well, I wouldn't want a bunch of people hanging about my property, either.
Cheyenne Depot Museum, Wyoming, USA
The Cheyenne Depot Museum in Wyoming has been around since 1993, located inside the historic Union Pacific Railroad depot. As you walk through it, you can feel the history of this major western example of the Richardsonian Romanesque architecture style. But if that’s not enough, some extra-special touches make this museum extra spooky — like the fact that there are supposed to be three entities roaming around!

Houska Castle on Wikipedia: Houska Castle, and most specifically the chapel, was constructed over a large hole in the ground that is a "gateway to Hell", which is allegedly so deep that no one could see the bottom of it.[6] Animal-human hybrids were reported to have crawled out of it, and dark-winged, otherworldly creatures flew in its vicinity. Legend has it that when construction began in the castle, all of the prisoners that were sentenced to death were offered a pardon if they consented to be lowered by rope into the hole, and report back on what they saw. When the first person was lowered, he began screaming after a few seconds, and when pulled back to the surface, he looked as if he had aged 30 years. He had grown wrinkles and his hair had turned white.[7] According to the Prague Tourism web site, the castle is reputed to have various types of ghosts, "a bullfrog/human creature, a headless horse, and an old woman" as well as the remains of "demonic beasts who escaped the pit".[7
