It’s no secret that health and safety precautions are crucial at work. However, often employers and their employees tend to overlook it, showing complete disregard for personal safety. We’re talking about worn tires, unsecured loads on vehicles, clutter blocking fire exits, incorrect placement of ladders; the list goes on. There’s a place on the Internet that brings attention to such hazards with a touch of humor.

The subreddit r/OSHA is named after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and their community description reminds you: “Safety first!”. More than 762K members are sharing photos of people who are walking on thin ice and pushing their luck while doing everyday tasks at work.

Bored Panda collected some of the best images from this online group that will make you laugh and roll your eyes. After you’re done enjoying this, make sure to have a look through our previous posts about the legendary subreddit right here, here, and here.

Problem here is, they actually refer to common sense and that's a rarity now.

r/OSHA has been showing off the ridiculous side of work safety hazards since its creation in 2013. Whether it’s putting a cardboard cover on an electrical panel or locking the emergency switch so no one could use it, the images members post really show what flirting with danger looks like.

The subreddit borrowed its name from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration which is a part of the United States Department of Labor. It was created to ensure safe working environments by setting standards and providing training and assistance according to them.

As stated on their website, it’s a small agency with almost two thousand inspectors responsible for the safety of 130 million workers. Although there’s quite a number of serious work injuries happening every year, they are down from 10.9 incidents per 100 workers in 1972 to 2.8 in 2019.

But even though this subreddit is sharing lighthearted photos that are not supposed to be considered too seriously, they do represent a larger problem. There are countless ways of getting yourself injured at work and the National Safety Council found that there are seven common safety hazards that are spotted over and over again.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that working at height is at the top of the list. Issues related to scaffolding and ladders are among the most frequently cited violations. It seems that the problem behind such hazards is simply a lack of understanding. Workers might not wear the fall protection gear properly or might not know about it at all. It’s the duty of the employer to identify locations where fall protection is a must and provide the workers with proper training.

Another common issue is poor housekeeping. Imagine there’s a pile of things blocking the emergency exits or crumbling ceilings and leaking water that no one takes care of; all of this can contribute to slips and falls. Things like that just invite trouble and increase the risk for injury.

Not to mention other threat factors like allergens, biological agents, and chemicals. According to Rachel Harrington, an NSC senior consultant, when an organization purchases and uses chemicals, it needs to have a control system and know why they were ordered and when to use them.

It depends on the speed of the truck when it fails. It's more likely that it will simply go flat. The other tire will continue to support the load.

The most important thing would be preventing slips, trips, and falls by making sure that the flooring is intact, spills are cleaned and blind spots are covered with warning signs or mirrors. Also, there’s always the issue with fire hazards. Employees should make sure that flammable materials do not end up in the work area or should always be kept in designated locations.

... that's totally me. And, believe it or not - some people never hurt themselves during dangerous things. I certainly never have ... last motorcycle accident was 2010, a roundabout that rises towards the center, and I had forgot to make the rear end high enough again, so the central stand's lever got to hit the ground and lift off the rear wheel. Whenn the suspension's axle broke in a fast curve, at almost 100 mph ... well, I couldn't continue the ride then, but nothing happened.

Even such a simple thing as dust can be a safety risk and can pose a serious explosion hazard. "You want to use wet methods or have high-efficiency vacuum systems," said Steve Ahrenholz, a senior industrial hygienist at NIOSH. "You don’t want to use just a shop vac or dry-sweep it—definitely not using compressed air to blow it. [Then] you’re just re-suspending the dust and distributing it all over."

Efficient housekeeping is an ongoing process, not a hit-and-miss occasional cleanup. The most important thing is that workers should be motivated to participate in maintaining the workplace. "Every worker does have a role. If they see that something is becoming a problem, they need to report it," Ahrenholz said. When you notice the safety risks that are most common to your environment, you should also put them in writing. Creating rules and policies makes it formal and precise. That way, workers are aware of the protocols and can follow the procedures consistently.

I had a friend who kept bottles of alcohol in his pantry, but some of the bottles contained avgas (aviation fuel), but I didn't know that the first time he told me to pour myself a drink. Fortunately I smelled it before I drank it.

There is a notorious 8-foot-high underpass in our rural county. And people still, despite it all, will drive into that thing with a rental box truck, or a load of hay. Then, to top it all off, it floods every time we have a hard rain, b/c some genius decided that digging down to make a dip was easier than redoing the railroad up top. (Fair is fair: it is.)

We have a railroad bridge that has claimed the 'life' of many trucks whose drivers don't pay attention to all the warnings. There's even a sign that says "NO TRUCKS ALLOWED". Still, they come and, still, the bridge takes another 'life'. My siblings and I have lots of fun when we hear another truck has lost to the bridge.

Remind me of oven rooms at my previous job. Old ones were safe, but then they "upgraded" . New oven rooms were sound insulated, heat was around 60 - 70 °C and it was impossible to open door from inside. Also, our boss immediately closed door, when he saw it open, ofter didn't bother to check room thoroughly. So we always had coworker as "door guard" when we were inside..

I bet I know why this happened and I’m embarrassed to say how I know but hey I’m honest. I screwed up a pair of straps one day because I couldn’t get the ratchet to work and it became all jumbled up. Long story short they ended up in two pieces due to my lack of knowledge and I straight up tied those things together 😂 It worked for what I was doing but I doubt it would for long on bigger jobs 🤷🏼

Had one less displaced than this at a place I worked. The racks were also screwed to the wall and had way less weight on them than this one. Less than a year later, all the screws finally took all they could take and sheered of all at once. Shelf fell against some other things which kept if from going down completely and of course locked in the equipment it fell against. When I left about 2 years later it was still in that position/condition.

That is not that bad. We had something called "ice dildo" and we believed that the heatsink is somewhere inside. Once I was told to remove the ice with steam/hot water and I was surprised how small the heatsink was after I removed it all. There was about 30 centimeters of ice in all directions.

If you think this amount of ice is impressive, you should see the LOX towers at the fish hatchery next to where my some works. I don't care if it's 100 and the sun is blazing, those towers are covered, in some places a foot or more thick.

It's just ice. Liquid nitrogen has a temperature of-196 Celsius (-320 F) When it's released and can expand it cools down it's surrounding. In a lot of nitrogen installations you can see a shower of some sort the melt away the ice. Doesn't have to be a hot shower, ordinary tap water will just do the trick

It looks like someone is running water through a series of electric kettles, that are actually plugged in. So I assume they each heat the water just enough, before it flows over to the next, so that at the end, the spa is filled with hot water.

Considering the ultra-sketchy cable is the ground, they would be clamping it to exposed metalwork anyway, as that is its purpose.

If that frame falls, a hard hat isn't going to make any difference. As for OSHA, Last place I worked that had OSHA inspections would receive a call 1 week in advance telling us when the inspectors would be there. That was the only time everyone had full safety gear.

In school, in the 70's, the maintenance guy used a wooden A frame ladder taller than this one that also had a vertical extension in the center. It would reach the top of the gym. Saw him at the top of it several times. I've never seen another ladder like it, wood, aluminum or fiberglass, since.

    Demi Zwaan
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

No, it's a type E plug connected to type B sockets. B sockets are 100-127 volt / 15 A and the E plug is for 220-240 volt / 16 A. You shouldn't be combining that without some sort of transformer.

I'm thinking that the plug that goes into the wall is a completely different type of plug than the extension cord uses. So somebody is going to use this to plug in a bunch of American plug items into an electricity supply that is completely different, and probably a lot more powerful. Chances are, everything will short out immediately. Very silly. Very dangerous.
