If you don’t have a neighbor horror story, you might consider yourself a lucky one, as quite a few of us have likely encountered an aggravating one or two. Some stomp around as if they roam from room to room doing cartwheels, others sing louder than they should—the volume often seems to be positively linked with lack of musical training,—a few start picking fights over matters that don’t even matter; the list goes on and on.

If one of these situations already evoked a sigh or flashbacks—we’re sorry; if not, scroll down to find one that likely will. Today, we have listed some of the most patience-testing, anger-inducing, plain-annoying neighbors out there, as shared by the ‘Mildly Infuriating’ subreddit. Covering everything from shoveling snow—or poop—into others’ territories to shooting firearms inside apartments, and so much more, these sure are some colorful examples of just how unhinged some neighbors can be.

One doesn’t necessarily have to be friends with those living around them; but a good rule of thumb would be not to make their life any worse either. Yet some people don’t abide by such rules, this way likely encouraging their neighbors to consider moving away.

In Britain, for instance, as much as 60% of people seemingly don’t get along with their neighbors, according to a Daily Mail survey; nearly 30% of them say they would never socialize with the people living nearby.

When it comes to the US, the situation might seem worse, as nearly three-in-four (73%, to be exact) of them dislike a neighbor, LendingTree reports. However, on the upside, roughly as many of them like at least one person in the neighborhood.

The pictures on the list are just some examples showing what makes certain neighbors difficult to bear, but the reasons are nearly limitless. Some of the most common ones, though—for Americans, at least—include neighbors giving off a “weird vibe”, as well as being loud, rude, or nosy; their pets causing trouble is also in the top five.

Another reason some people are far from fond of those living nearby is the latter not upkeeping the exterior of their property; apparently, this annoys as much as 16% of Americans.

LendingTree revealed that the antipathy Americans feel towards their neighbors is not only based on what the latter do—or don’t do, for that matter—but also on competitiveness. It pointed out that as much as 17% of them feel financially pressured to keep up with those living around them; among those with a homeowners association, the number rises to 36%.

Despite the competition, a similar number of people—37%, to be exact—would rather have neighbors with the same views regarding a certain important matter: you guessed it right, political beliefs.

The reasons for Britons hating their neighbor seem to be similar to those living in the States; from troublesome pets to unattended gardens, they seem to hate it with a passion equally as strong. However, the things that annoy them more than anything else are not the same as those of their American counterparts, as people in Britain seem to be aggravated by annoying driving habits the most. According to the Daily Mail, there’s nothing worse for them than someone blocking their driveway or parking in their space.

Another thing Britons detest—number seven among the 20 reasons they hate their neighbor—is the latter hosting too many late-night parties. Ironically, reason number 19 is neighbors getting annoyed when the Britons themselves have a party.

Despite the numerous ways they can get on our nerves, neighbors can reportedly have a positive effect on our well-being (well, at least the less annoying ones can). A Rutgers study revealed that low levels of contact with people living nearby are linked to lower levels of satisfaction and psychological well-being in middle and later life.

Spanning over 10 years, the research found out that even though neighbors might not prevent an individual from facing certain hardships, they are an important part of one’s social landscape, whether it’s providing assistance that they do or ensuring daily communication.

For some, the importance of having friendly neighbors became evident during the pandemic. Due to the lockdown, restrictions, and health-related matters, some people had to rely on the kindness of others, some of whom often lived right next door.

A study on individuals supporting their neighbors during the early stage of the COVID-19 lockdown revealed that they used different means of communication to reach out to those living nearby who needed some sort of help, making even greater effort to contact vulnerable groups.

Their ways of supporting others included everything from delivering food and medical prescriptions, to providing information, advice or even sharing of experiences. Quite a few of such individuals reportedly felt more involved in the neighborhood life after the pandemic and showed interest in committing to it even more in the future.

While some people hate their neighbors—a few might love them—there are also individuals who don’t know their neighbors to begin with. Pew Research Center revealed that 57% of Americans say they know some of them and roughly one-in-four believe they know most of them. It also pointed out that it’s the older generations that seem to have a larger circle of acquaintances living nearby.

Pew Research Center also found that even in the age of digital technology, neighbors tend to communicate more face-to-face (20%) rather than using the phone or email (7%).

Another interesting thing the survey revealed was that despite not knowing a lot of them, people tend to trust the neighbors they do know; roughly 66% of Americans—who know at least some of their neighbors—would feel comfortable trusting them with a spare set of their keys in case there’s an emergency.

So, we specifically don't touch our garden at all for the first 15 weeks, from the start of Spring. Some of our neighbors complained a bit, until we explained our rationale. While it may look a little unkept and untidy by most standards, our garden blossoms with the most incredible wild flowers for those few weeks, and with that comes an abundance of pollinators and small birds, it is like an oasis compared to our neighbors who only have manicured lawns. We then keep it nice and trimmed for the rest of the year, but you best be sure that for the whole of Spring, my garden is going to look a little wild and I love it!

I also love it! But I also think there is a difference between having a garden that's a little wild for a bit to encourage pollination vs someone having a lawn that makes their house look like Freddy Krueger lives there.

Short mowed lawns are an ecological disaster. Those 'pests' that the comments are complaining about are native animals desperately clinging on to what tiny fragments of habitat remain available in built up areas. Without the bees, bugs and caterpillars, the whole food chain starts to crash and burn. Small birds need live food for their babies, and weed seeds as food to sustain them through the winter.

Those 'pests' are the native species surviving and thriving in a habitat that has been all but destroyed by the stupid fashion for lawns. Without them, no birds, no small animals, no hawks, just sterile dystopian horror.

I guess they’ve never heard of elderly/disabled people?? Otherwise, it’s reasonable to assume they won’t be mowing the lawn every single week, when they can hardly take a few steps with their walking aid (or perhaps not be able to walk at all) … SMH. I feel like entitled people are kinda disabled sometimes, though. 🤦‍♀️🙄

Elderly/disabled people are required to follow the laws and codes just as the rest. If they are unable to maintain the property according to laws and building codes, it is up to them to arrange for it to be done. If they are unable to do that, they might not be safe and well living alone.

If the grass tickles your knees when walking up to your door, then get a mower or get gone. I have bad enough allergies without living next to a weedy, buggy mini-jungle.

Living in the Southwest, I grew tired of my grass and the water bill to maintain it so I opted to have it scraped clear and 3 inches of 3/4 crushed stone put down. The neighbor across the street has a gravel lawn and likes to point out how much nicer his yard always looks compared to the rest of us. The landscaper after finishing the job informed me in a voice loud enough to be heard by the neighbor that compared to our yard, his gravel yard looks like s**t.

Fun Fact: Most US cities, and many outside the US, have standards and regulations regarding lawns. Specifically, if a property's lawn is badly overgrown, then the property owner can be fined for it. What's more, if the overgrowth is such that a property could be mistaken for being abandoned, cities won't hesitate to condemn the property. Once condemned, a property owner typically has a few weeks to correct this issue and pass an inspection, before the property (and all property/furniture inside it) are demolished.

Fun fact: In the US, in most cities, if you fail to mow your lawn on a regular basis, and the grass gets over a certain height, the cities CAN and WILL fine you for it. What's more, if the grass gets to a height that the property could be mistaken for being abandoned, cities can even condemn the property.

My ex did the mowing, but there were times when work scheduling got in the way. The "Hank Hill" neighbor brought it to my attention in a gruff way that set me off. I told him if he was so bothered, he could do it himself.

I have neighbours who allow their grass to grow well over knee height all the time unless I ask their landlord to get it mowed. At least 8 times we’ve had snakes emerging from the grass, and neighbourhood pets regularly go missing. So I relate to this particular frustration though the sarcasm is childish.

I live in the hood and some of the rental houses can get REALLY bad at times. I'm talking grass up to your knees and then we have to worry about fleas, ticks, snakes and mice, especially when it's the houses next door to us. Code enforcement has started coming through our neighborhood on a regular basis now and leaving "nasty grams" on front doors. I'm guessing the city got several complaints because they rarely came into my neighborhood before now. They only care about the front yard and rarely go and look into the back, unless again it's something horrendously bad and they've received multiple complaints from different people. They will leave a notice on the front door giving you 10 days to mow the front yard, after that it's a $500.00 fine. Then it goes up to $1000.00 after another 10 days if you still haven't dealt with it.

snarky, but i feel for the sender....all of the homes owned by older bachelors in my hood look abandoned b/c they refuse to mow or weed or do anything to maintain the outside of their homes...at least keep up the front yard...it does affect home values in the area....and, if you live next door to it, the resale value of your home in particular.

Get a very loud petrol lawnmower and mow your lawn daily at the earliest or latest legal time. And wave at your neighbours as you do it.

This one lacks enough context for me to understand who the bad neighbor here. If it's in someplace that rains a lot a lawn can get really tall really fast and attract pests. If you're only mowing your lawn once a year then it makes sense in this context for the neighbors to be concerned.

OMG this is such a sensitive subject in my house. We have a lawnmower that we use when the grass gets high enough, but our neighbor has taken it upon himself to mow our grass for us, despite not being asked to, and always scalps the grass so its now dying.....

A dump in the neighborhood is recognized as reducing surrounding property values and in many/most places an official complaint can be placed in accordance with bylaws and you are forced to maintain your property. I'd much rather get a note at least giving me a heads up.

If I lived in a nice subdivision and somebody never mowed their lawn I would be pissed to. Same is when people park cars on their lawns. If they have an HOA he or she has to mow to keep their house looking nice.

Actually, I agree with the letter writer. Many municipalities would fine you for your lawn.
