We humans have invented loads of things throughout our history. Some inventions are absolutely amazing and we cannot imagine our lives without them. That includes medicine, technology, transportation and many more things.

However, not all the things we invented are that good; some are even devastating.

Redditor NPT1506 asked internet users: "What is the worst human invention ever made?" and many chimed in to answer. From bombs to ads, people prove that lots of things we came up with are really not that great. What do you think is the worst invention? Share your thoughts in the comments down below!

For-profit healthcare system. There is no reason people should suffer financial burden seeking the right to live a healthy life.

My father had to have emergency surgery two days ago. He is currently in the ICU in a medically induced coma, so that he can heal. Yesterday, when I was in the elevator after leaving his room, I got a call from the HOSPITAL BILLING LADY. She wanted me to sign off, in case his medicaid didn't cover his treatment, because she had tried to get him to do it, but he was RESTING!!!! Yes. I AM shouting. For f*ck sake! Couldn't even wait until he woke up to start worrying about payment.

Until most nations made laws that created a tax payer funded system, healthcare was always a client paid for system. The American system is broken, but so are many areas where it is government funded (Canada for example)

The same redditor that asked the question gave us an amazing interview. First we asked them what they think is the worst invention ever: "I have thought a lot about it, and I would say it probably is single-use plastic, because many tons of it are now breaking down into toxic compounds that are lurking in every corner of the Earth and these compounds will stay there for a very long time unless future generations know how to deal with it."

I feel sad for the little girls who end up 'broken' because they grow up being told how beautiful and special they are (compared to peers) and then one day they hit puberty and find out they are just average without wigs, lashes, costumes and tons of makeup. "Average" it totally fine. By definition most people are. But the reality check can be jarring. I know such a girl. The mom has 10 kids but for years all we hear about is (her name) this and (her name) that. And now she is a teenager, 'okay' but not as super cute, presumably trying to adjust to just being a normal child.

The thing is it normalizes putting make up on very young children. My daughter was 5 and taking ballet at her daycare. They had a performance for the parents. When I got there another parent had taken it upon herself to fully make up my daughter. I was not happy. Livid. She had no idea that pedos use make up to sexualize children.

In their opinion: "I think that inventions are now more and more modern and can be applied in many cases, but there is a problem that the creators focus on the profits that they bring them rather than improving and upgrading so that it can be used to maximum capacity and suitable for everyone!"

Tobacco served it's purpose at one point just like caffeine does now. It's only a crime against humanity now because we've discovered how bad it is and didn't stop making it. Asbestos is still one of the best insulators in the world but we stopped putting it in buildings when we realized it killed people.

How awesome is that, he's never seen anyone smoke indoors, and the look of shock and disgust on his face when I told him I can remember reataurants having smoking sections, priceless! But everyone, please stop conflating "tobacco" and "cigarettes." Tobacco is sacred medicine in my Indigenous culture, but we also know that cigarettes are poison. I don't participate in pipe ceremonies because I have asthma, but I occasionally use (pure) tobacco in other ceremonial ways, and I respect it.

For all the 'evil' of cigarettes, it's not like the cigarette manufacturers invented them. People have been smoking tobacco for pretty much all of history. The positive effects of nicotine as a drug were observed long before science knew about the health issues. IMO the true evil here is not that cigarettes were invented, but the lies told years later to keep the profits up.

Religion is not the problem. It is the way people abuse it. It is used as a facade for powerful people, but when it is used in a right way, it can massively impact others for good. I believe, for instance, that the Bible was never intended as a weapon, but as the ultimate self-help book that people can use to be humble and read ALL of it instead of ignoring the parts that you don't want to hear about.

I say this as a Christian... I agree. Humans can be so hateful towards each other, and religion seems to get used as an excuse to attack each other and take the 'holier than thou' attitude. I don't believe that that's what God wants for us, and it makes me so sad. Whatever your beliefs are, we are all in the same boat, and we should love and respect each other. Whatever your gender, sexuality, or ethnicity; we are equals.

"For example, in the past, when there was no smartphone, people could only get in touch with each other through the telephone and it took ages to reach one person, but now, with only one smartphone, we can use it for various purposes. Not only can we call others, but we can also see their face, keep updated with their daily activities, or do other kinds of entertainment; for example, listen to music or surf the net. Moreover, there are available applications such as Grab which help us catch a taxi or motorbike much more easily. With this smart device, there seems to be a little barrier in communication among people."

I hate these things. EDIT: It was a short post for sure so here goes: They maim and kill so many innocents. Children playing and whomp, they are killed or terribly scarred and crippled for life. It also pollutes and kills wildlife. It costs millions to clear areas.

I had a friend from Vietnam who refused to walk through open fields because she was convinced there were landmines. We were in the U.S. and of course there were none, but she was so programmed to believe this since birth that it became an irrational fear. In hindsight, I really feel bad that this was a childhood reality for her. However, the younger me had not developed that level of empathy yet so I once tried to convince her to cut through a vacant fair ground on the way home from school. She refused so I left her and she begged me to come back. I mockingly started to run around and tell her it was fine when suddenly BOOM! I stepped in a gopher hole and badly sprained my ankle.

Aha, have heard stories of cities/communities whose "fight against crime" rates were lowered, as promised, due to increasing the traffic stops and such, inflating so many numbers to buy the illusion..... However for profit prisons make their PRIVATE funds KEEPING inmates. More stops, more reason to arrest, more racism, judicial system etc etc work in favor of keeping some crusty rich white dude making profit from the private prisons they own. No rehabilitation, just lining their pockets. They find politicians, other corporations, it snowballs from there and is inhumane. So you're paying the excessive amounts of traffic fines and taxes to line all of their pockets under the promises of "cracking down on crime" "results" or whatever propaganda

Ok, ok, I’m gonna get killed by downvotes here, but i do not agree about the last sentence. The rest of this statement I agree with 110%, but I hate it when boomers turn on young adults with the old, why don’t you just communicate instead of being antisocial and on your phone all day b******t. Just because we don’t communicate the way other generations did doesn’t mean we aren’t communicating. But in this world, social media is the only way left to get our voices heard. I mean, this may just be me, but I can have an actual, easy, understanding conversation with some rando on the internet than with my own family, and that is f****d up. The fact that boomers caused part of this problem by having only mouths and no ears, and then still bitching about it is starting to p**s me off. The world has *changed*. Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t give you a right to try and change other peoples views. Social skills have different standards, not necessarily bad ones.

Amazingly enough social skills is so much more than communication. Another big aspect of social skills is making plans, agreeing to those plans and then following through with those plans. The following through part is where a lot of peoples social skills suck today. What makes it even worse is when those who can't bring themselves to follow through also choose to not use their communication skills to simply reach out and let people know they won't be able to make it for the agreed upon plans. They simply don't show up.

I don't think that social media itself is the issue though. The media has become much more partisan and polarised so even if you didn't have the crazies in social media, the mainstream media is bad enough. Both misinformation and the decline of social skills are both things that need more attention both at school and at home. Our society has drastically changed over the last decade or two and I do feel our education system hasn't caught up.

"Why Does This Even Exist?" 35 Inventions That People In This Online Thread Find Strange And Useless Chemical Warfare While nukes are horrible beyond imagination, humanity learned to avoid them as a way to ensure their own survival, it's wise, but egoistical nonetheless. Chemical weapons on the other hand traumatized the f**k out of the survirvors and the ones who called the attacks and got to see the aftermath. They were so horrible that many soldiers deserted after using it and many went mad. I wish never having to see the skin melting off in the face of a barely alive toddler. Throughout the last century we successfully banned almost all of those - the 1925 geneva protocol, the 1980 chemical weapons convention, among others, but I'm afraid when the next generations start to forget the horrors of chemical warfare, it will resurface in the likes of whats happening with fascism.

A norwegian artist (stagename:Ole I'Dole) released a song in 1983 called "framtidsskrekk", which literally means "Future Fright". This entire song is about worries around the news and war and how the future might be. And the texts for the chorus goes like this: "scared of what they're thinking of. The only thing that's missing now, is a crazy man with the power and a button to push." (As in a president or leader that's crazy enough to use nuclear weapons.) And for some years now, THAT chorus comes sneaking in and gets stuck in my head for a while. Usually after watching the world news.

I think despite the weapons being horrible themselves, they secured peace between major factions in the last decades, without the MAD principle nothing would have stopped another massive war in Europe after WW2. They are the perfect example for the saying "the best weapon is the one you never have to use"

**Corporations.** - Legal entities in that they can own property. - Immortal. - Fines of millions of dollars have little effect when their profits are in the billions. - Able to shift their revenues from nation to nation to avoid paying taxes. - Zero ethics...if you won't evict Grandma, then we'll fire you and put someone in your chair that will. - Able to donate a pittance of their profits to politicians who now reside in their pockets, and legislate to serve the corps and not the people. - Anyone who defies a corporation will be ground to dust by their legal team.

Unless all the virologists in the world conspired together, no one has shown that there is any likelihood covid 19 started in a lab. There aren't many different ways to edit viruses so it would have been clear to experts. Unless China developed a revolutionary way to edit viruses and didn't want to get global recognition for it and there haven't been any leaks in 3 years, it's very doubtful

You are not old enough. Kraft push in opening USED to work just fine in the 60s, 70s, I think 80s. At some point they went to thinner cardboard and I think also stopped perforating the tear point as much. Not sure exactly when it changed but at some point that press to open spot became worthless.

I don't mind glitter, as long as it's environmentally friendly. I find sand everywhere anyway. And always get flour or dust on my clothes even if I've done nothing related to either of those two things. Might as well sparkle while me and my house look like a mess. But, again, environmentally friendly. No more mikroplastic.

No-one wants chemical toxins. They are what are created when you want to make computers, or electricity, or internet routers. So OP is paying people to create chemical toxins. That said, that's a nuclear power plant. Opponents of chemical toxins should like nuclear power plants (except when built by totalitarian regimes or on fault lines).

Buy a laser printer. Most of you do not need a color printer. Dry toner powder lasts forever plus is cheaper per page even if you print so much your ink doesn't dry out. HP is trash. Which makes me sad because I used to work in tech and really revered HP products as being top notch and solid. (that used to be true).

Person A spends $100 on tokens for their online game. Person B buys a $100 cookbook to get that killer recipe to win the county fair. Person C hires an agent to land that prime role on Yellowstone. They all spent money to get an advantage. You can enter the amateur portion of a marathon and you can play phone games that don't require money to win. It's unreasonable to expect others to sacrifice spending money on their hobby because you don't want to.

I still don't understand, how it became so popular in the past. I mean, sure, sometimes lobotomy actually had desired effect, but how people came to believe that cutting through brain tissue will fix everything from mental illnesses to mood swings and hyperactivity.

I get why it happened - the problems were seen as ones of the brain, so the fix had to be to that organ. The history of neurosurgery even goes back to the ancient Egyptians and Maya: The Basic Steps of Evolution of Brain Surgery https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5879592/ The surgeries without consent are the really horrifying ones, especially considering how little was understood about what they were doing.

You have to see it in the context of it's time. Lobotomies were popular in an age before the invention of any kind of psychiatric medication. When a patient with e.g. severe schizophrenia was violent and a danger to themselves and others, the only available treatment back then was to put them in an asylum and more often then not restrain them for most of the time. A lobotmized patient was calm and manageable and could be taken care of by their own family. It is easy to see how in the eyes of many people it was seen as the lesser of two evils. Most of the horror stories we hear today came from an age when the procedure became "fashionable" and was used on more and more conditions that were simply considered unwanted by the patient's family, such as depression

Yes, though when I was trying to buy the non-sweetener version of a fizzy drink and spoke with the Sainsbury's Store Manager he did admit, as we looked down the aisle together, that it was much harder to find ones without sweeteners these days. I avoid them as many sweeteners are known in cancer research as 'pre-disposers'.

In the future your favorite series may not be cancelled just because the main actor is board with the role or god forbid gets injured off screen.

"Why Does This Even Exist?" 35 Inventions That People In This Online Thread Find Strange And Useless This will be a hot take, but hear me out- cars. They kill 40,000 people in the US every year, They are the reason most cities here are unwalkable, which is a huge factor leading to obesity and heart disease (so add many more thousands to the death toll indirectly), They are the least efficient, least safe, most expensive way for people to commute, They chew through fossil fuels and other valuable resources in droves, They raise the price of engaging with society by thousands of dollars between the initial cost, fuel costs and repair costs, And they turn otherwise reasonable people into raging, belligerent a******s.

They chew through valuable, FINITE fossil fuels. That won’t be replenished even close to fast enough to be applicable. Oil. Is. Going. To. Run. Out. We’ve already passed the peak, so one way or another cars will sort themselves out in a not too distant future. Let’s hope somebody started to think about different solutions in fifty years or so at the latest, or we’re in deep, deep shìt.

As a teenager I began thinking about cars etc. My conclusion was that on weekdays (mon-fri) from ca 6am to 4pm private cars should not be allowed anywhere. Busses and work cars would be fine but private cars should be banned. In my mind it would decrease the need for wider and longer roads by a lot. Because I think most of the need for wider and longer roads is because ppl will drive to/from work 1 person per car. The money not used on roads should be put into making public transportation cheaper and better organised. But all of this is just my messed up mind not seeing all the problems there probably would be by doing this.

I was born in 1960, when leaded gas was all that was sold. I was in my twenties when unleaded was first offered, catalytic converters were required in all new cars, and they stopped selling leaded gas (older cars could run on both unleaded and leaded, but newer cars with catalytic converters could only run on unleaded). What pisses me off the most is that I didn’t learn until about twenty years later that everyone of us who was alive before they stopped selling leaded gas has trace amounts of lead—-a heavy metal—-in our lungs, simply because we breathed before lead was removed from gasoline, because the lead in the gas was expelled into the air in a car’s exhaust. No one mentioned that at the time. We were poisoned without even being given a warning or heads up about it. Big f*****g secret to keep profits rolling in. Big Oil, big business. M***********s.

I'm fuzzy on this, forgive me, it's been a while since I've heard the story. What I heard is they were having trouble with engine knocking. They found two substances that would cause the engine to perform better. One was I think kerosene (the part I'm fuzzy on), and the other was adding lead to the gasoline. The problem was that one of the substances was free, and people could just add it to the gasoline themselves. But they wanted to make a profit, so they started telling people that the only way to avoid engine knocking was to buy their *special leaded gasoline*. I forget the guy's name, but he was seriously one of the most evil people who ever lived. He literally poisoned everyone on the entire planet for money when it was easily avoidable.

By the time it was because of a technical issue on engines: valves weren't strong enough and leaded additive protected them from breaking. But a nonsense nowadays

Only barely, the real benefit of tetraethyl lead was that it was a detonation inhibitor, allowing higher compression engines. It's biggest (perceptible at the time) downside was fouling spark plugs. Cars used to have a little rack under the hood to put a spare set of plugs in because you were definitely going to have to change them on the side of the road at some point.

It was easier to advance petrol engine technology than it was to advance storage battery technology. The astronomic leaps in battery and control-circuitry technology required to enable electric cars to surpass petrol ones took a hundred years.

Fun fact: mustard gas was intended to immobilize but not kill. That way it takes two soldiers out of the game--the victim and the rescuer. I worked as an environmental clean up contractor at an army base so this is what we were told. On the bright side, a bacteria was discovered that would consume and neutralize mustard. Haven't heard of any mutant, mustard devouring monsters in my region-yet.

You know, we already had achieved 35- and even 32-hour work week in some countries for short periods of time, but sadly went back to between 38 and 41 hours in most places. It's not all evil capitalist dystopia out there.

Better than the old 80-hour work week... And getting paid in company money that could only be spent in company stores...

The 40 hour work week was such a blessing to the world. And there are still so many who wish for it! Before this idea existed, laborers worked 7 days a week, 10-14 hours a day. And in many third world countries this is still the case. Count your gifts!

It's whatever you want at this point...just remember you only get paid for the time you work. So...no complaints.

I get paid an annual salary. Over the past few years, and working at the same pay grade but with three different institutions, I’ve worked a 35, 37 and 40 hour week. My annual salary did not change…. only the hours I was expected to work for it. I know which one I preferred. I also got more annual leave on the lowest hour one too! UK, if that’s relevant.

I started on a 52 hour week (all for £347 per year) working 5 and a half days, and split shifts - start at 7am, off at 12 for 4 hours (too far to go back home, so walked around central London till time to go back) and then back till 9pm. 40 hours was a luxury. Was on 37 hrs/week just before I retired.

I've heard of some companies testing 32 hour weeks that pay the same as 40 hour week. Essentially everyone gets a raise, plus an extra day off. Best part: profits have increased and turnover has dropped. https://www.computerworld.com/article/3674829/four-day-workweek-pilot-shows-wide-support-for-a-32-hour-week.amp.html

The unions that were sick of having 60 hour work weeks and decided that there must be 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours of free time in a day.

There aren't enough sensational stories to fill 30 minutes, let alone 24 hours - so **everything** becomes sensationalized destroying what is important and what is fluff.

Taxes. Imagine wetting yourself in the middle of a city centre because you don't have the right change. They should be a basic human right.

People aren't abusing it because they want to, right? Many thousands of people became addicted to opioids after doctors, misled by Pharma, prescribed Oxy. Once addicted, without adequate resources or support for recovery, many turned to street drugs, many of which are laced with Fentanyl, because it's cheap and potent, as you probably know. Many of these people ended up addicted while attempting to recover from legitimate injuries, and because they followed medical advice

We have started using it in our hospitals here in the UK, they give it to you in labour, I can tell you it is good stuff, if used right. I can see why people would get addicted so I'm glad that it's not that common over here, The area that I live we have a lot of drug/alcohol addicts, I have lost family members to drink and/or drugs. Most of my old friend circle from my teens are gone now, I'm not even 40 yet, when we started a family we decided that drink and drugs we no longer an option. Eventually the people we used to go out and party with turned to harder drugs and started dropping like flies. I do hope that fentanyl does not become more widely used in the UK because it would become a real problem.

My partner is using fentanyl patches for pain control; if I were in the kind of pain he's currently in, I would probably have ended my life.

My mom and grandma both used fentanyl patches to control chronic pain. It is really helpful if used correctly. Unfortunately, the USA has a habit of over prescribing pain pills that lead to spiraling addictions. Fentanyl has also been fearmongered in the media. You are not going to pass out or OD from touching fentanyl but you can very possibly have a panic attack if you believe the rampant rumors

Outside of a medical setting, the influx of illicit fentanyl into the US and Canada can be legit considered a chemical weapons attack poisoning so many unsuspecting people :(.
