Artists don't need money, right? Their work of line fills their souls, and that's enough for any human being, right? And after all, drawing or having a photography career is more like a hobby and nobody gets paid for their hobbies...right?
Well, no, obviously. It's not right. But that still seems to be the attitude of a lot of people who expect unpaid work form artists, unfortunately. A Twitter account called For Exposure is bringing this to the world's attention by tweeting the most ridiculous responses that young artists have received when they've had the downright nerve to ask for money for doing a job for somebody! From being offered to be paid in exposure, of course, to be asked to do their absolute best working for free just because; the attitude of the commissioners is just appalling at best.
Now, if you are an artist who often hears the phrase 'free work,' these tweets will be painfully relatable. If you sympathize with those with unpaid internship careers lasting their whole lives, these stories are a great example of the cause. So scroll down below to check the unpaid laborers' struggles for yourself.

How dare you expect money in exchange for goods and services, the most basic and status quo economic principle in history!
Well this is exactly what thousands of people just like you are doing right now. They are called ‘Social Media Managers’ and they are getting paid great money to work online doing simple tasks on Twitter such as: Sending out ‘tweets’ for businesses Following customers and other related businesses Uploading photos and videos to Twitter Generating more followers Most of these jobs don’t require any prior experience and the only skills you need are a good knowledge of how to use Twitter. But artists should get paid at least a little bit
Load More Replies...Irony: when someone who expects free labor calls anyone else entitled.
By definition a job is a service for pay, B***H.
I'm a graphic artist and I actually had someone try this....{not just claim it was his, but trying to sell copies cause it was made "for him" and that meant he could do wut he wanted with it} So I sued him, got my prints back and he is not allowed to use them, also with a nice settlement of $2,600 bucks {the picture was only $10 to begin with too}
I could understand not linking it back to the artist, but . . . editing out the signature? Not cool.
Sometimes the art does belong to the buyer like how your boss owns everything you create during working hours because he pays you. He can also sell the things you made. Although in the case of custom designs made by an independent artist, it depends on his terms and conditions.
There's nothing really wrong with this one. If we're going to stand our ground on being paid every time (as we should), we can't then turn around and also demand free exposure and advertising.
It's not exposure and advertising. It's a credit to other's work. In academics, s**t like that is a sure way to get kicked out from university. But I understand, client just can't bother not being an entitled f*****g a*****e to the one that does the work for him. And people that see no problem are the reason why working culture is in such s****y condition.
Load More Replies...This asshat's profile must be known. No artist should have to work with someone like this, avoid at all costs
Yes, because it’s not like so much as 20 seconds of animation can take weeks.
Does that person think that a one hour animated film will be made in $75?!
Its a joke hes acting like artists customers
Load More Replies...Yeah and all those years where I could have worked in a supermarket, but dedicated my time to reaching a level where I could be commissioned.
Load More Replies...It is nice if art is affordable for everyone . . . but artists need to make money, too
I tried once an artist sold me a commision for 2 dollars. and I kept asking if she was sure she did not want more. like 2 dollars. she could at least have taken 20 for this she made.
Unfortunately there are working artist for extremely ridiculous low rates and/or exposure. Go to Upwork for example and you will see
This guy thinks that hes so important, but he should think. If he worked as lets say, an architect, he wouldnt expect to just design a building for some1, and not be paid. Its the same with an artist
Load More Replies...me: so I need an artist for an idea to a pc game I am working on friend: you are an artist. me: I dont wanna work free
Are you sure it's a movie? Maybe they're actually looking for someone to abduct.
If you expect someone to perform / act they should get paid with or without clothing. The term 'starving artist' is complete b******t.
This sounds more like shady criminal syndicate tactic -suspicious looks-
This guy's idea is great though... It WOULD be awesome to have a game like that.. But it's not in the right forum I s'pose.
DayZ beat him to it... you have to use disinfectant on bandages before using them or you die
Load More Replies......does nobody else think its odd that his "game" is really more of a suicide/self harm simulator, than ...*giggle* ...a "survival" game. o___o Might need to talk to somebody, that one.
The concept of being able to do “anything” is not a genius idea, it’s the aspirational goal of any and every open world game in the history of video games. However in reality there are constants because nothing is Infinite - not memory, not storage, not level designers or graphic designers or developers. So the real art and creativity is in the choices and the tradeoffs that are made. Which makes this guy sound like a whiny 5 year old
So just the red dead redemption games if it wasn’t in the west
That game would not be plausible to make.
Walk away from this job because this arsehole won't pay you anything? Go ahead!
Maybe change the scope of the project? You can get lots of d**k pics for free.
10£ is actually a great deal if you consider the time and materials put into making art.
What this people think?! That artists don't need water, food, don't pay bills?!
these kind of people generally do not think... they call us selfish however they are they are selfish one... they do not respect your work
Load More Replies...Supporters? Don't you mean opportunists who are going to take advantage on you by forcing you to work for them for free? It's never a Win-Win situation.
Why is this so familiar to me...? I swear somebody messaged me this once on my instagram..
This is why I moved away from cartoon/anime art. The client base tended to be younger, and messages like this were a common experience for me. When I started painting portraits, I got more commissions from people who were in their late twenties and above, and so far they've had much better etiquette. Most of the people I got these messages from were either young artists, or not artists but closely connected to a circle of anime/manga artists.
I hope you realize how ridiculously hard it is to not email you a threat right now. You quite clearly have never made even a doodle if you think it is that easy to make art.
Yes, I’m selfish for needing to pay billls....
I'd send the the doodles one does during a lecture or while on the phone.
Cause paper and pencils pens markers paint is apparently free now , I must not have received that memo , is food free now too ? Ahh the future we're living in ,barely living in ...
Wait, so do bills no longer exist? I can live for free?
How exactly would one film/photograph during a workout and spot at the same time?!
Load More Replies...Omg, is this for real? This has to be a joke. I cant believe a douchebag like this exists... Unless it was written by Kanye West
Please tell me this post was a practical joke.... Cuz someone like this actually existing is something I'm not prepared to accept.
What a douche canoe, this dude has a legitimate personality disorder.
I personally would feel bad do it. Then realize if he didn't have any money why would he come to me in the first place and agree be mad at him whenever I think about it >:(
My favourite ist the line 'you don't do this for a living and if you do that is really sad.'
It's not only skill and supplies that one has to think of when pricing a piece but also the time that goes into it. The longest I've worked on something is 20 hrs. At minimum wage that's 220 bucks. The bigger the piece the harder it is, for me at least. Asking for 50-100 is a good deal in my opinion. I could have been at my job earning rent instead of taking hrs to draw something for 10 bucks.
Their hotel analogy is really bad. They say "you wouldn't be able to because you can't build a hotel"? Well, no duh. You'd need money to do it, just like you'd need money to make art, plus you'd also need money to do other stuff, like pay bills and buy food and water. And I suppose they could argue you could get a real job to pay for that, but come on, if you have a full-time job, there's no way you'd have enough time to create art and stuff. Sorry for the mini-rant, just really hate people like this
you get what you pay for, its stupid to generalise like you do, 20$ is nothing when it comes to art, some paintings goes for hundreds of thousands of dollars, yet the paper its drawn on barely costs anything compared to the price, if i pay an artist 10-20$ ofcourse you get mostly bad art with barely any effort, but go to a good artist say "i will pay you 2000$ to draw my character" and if the artist is serious about their work you will get an amazing drawing with tons of detail just like you wanted it
The best thing about this is, EVERYONE with two hands and eyes can get an artist if they just work hard enough. „talent“ is just a buff that accelerates your progress a little bit. That said, each and every one of that dipshits could do Art themselves, if they were just willing to draw 5 hours min every day for let’s say 3 years. But you have to be willing. There is no shortcut. So another person took their free time and put it into getting better while you spend your miserable life working at Walmart and jerking off to tentacle porn and then you’ll get mad because other person actually have the will and dedication to make something out of their life unlike you worthless piece of s**t!? Not even kidding, f*****g kill yourself. You are the worst. This makes me so mad.
Sorry for the weird typos, cant seem to edit my comment (late night bored panda iPad in bed session)

None of this f*****g bitches would be willing to work their miserable job for free ಠ_ಠ just because others worked hard towards doing a profession they love, the yshould be punished!? F*****G KILL YOURSELVES IF YOU THINK LIKE THAT -.-
Ugh, the irony is just baffling... Their selfishness and greed is clear to see and they call the one trying to make an honest buck 'greedy'. -_-
Bet there were nude women queuing around the block for this opportunity!
Um, I’m no woman but if I had to be nude in a video I’d expect a morgage’s worth of pay.
Admittedly, being a creative writer with a degree I have had this problem. I have fleshed out storylines that I want quality artwork for and have been willing to PAY for, but because so many people are gun-shy due to a shitload of people hounding mangaka to do it 'for exposure', it has gotten exponentially more difficult.
Aww - but please!! It's for art - sexy sexy art! :D So grateful I was never stupid or sleazy enough to try this in my youth.

really with the plagiarizing?? My advice to this douche would be: go do your friends weddings, bar mitzvas, recitals etc for free (while doing your best possible work). Build your portfolio the way the rest of us had to.
GIRL BYE. Unless you’ll pay me twice the amount of debt America is in, then F**K off.
So tempted to copy and send this to every author I like reading. :D
Do you know how PAINFUL it is to write books? I’M writing a book right now, that s**t’s hard. I expect a f**k ton of money!
I tend to ball my hand into a fist and swing when people yell for no reason so don't be a little b***h and start crying.
I can brag this in front of my mum and even she won't be that impressed. So forget it.
"we can't afford to pay anybody since we haven't done anything." Pitch your idea on kickstarter - problem solved! /satire (please don't hurt me *fleeeeeee!* )
Well, yeah! You ask for a service, you pay for that service...mate!
I’d do it just so I can have an excuse to ask the rest of the employees what happened.
I voted for Trump and even I find this stupid. ANYONE would find this stupid.
Sorry, it just lost the fight to some of my other base desires, like food, shelter, back rubs...
I just can't believe that anyone expects/demands people/artists/etc work for free . I mean when I got a 11X17 portrait of my favorite D&D Spell caster 40 + years ago I paid $35.00 and thought it was a great deal and a Fantastic Artist.I was very happ Does everyone on here think that Artists and Musicians and other skilled people just live on air and castles in the sky ?

if racists are accused of being racist...isn't that just being called out?
In this case I support the exposure. A******s need to be exposed.
If you’re racist isn’t exposure the one thing you DON’T want?
just once in my life, I wish someone would say I will be paid in exposure. so I can say I already have that cd
My response would be "You have a choice. You pay me a flat rate for the work, or you pay me on a 'per-sale', royalty basis. Which hurts less?
Well at least this one offered to split the profits. That's better than those who've said they weren't going to pay anything.
Yeah, this is different, this guy is asking for a partner - someone to be the other half of the team for the same risk reward he's getting.

Yeah... the $5 Logo sites have done a GREAT job of underscoring peoples' already-lopsided view of artists.
This one has such a common and distinctive odor, I can sense it at "hello"
How much happier a world it would be if the numerous examples of sterling employ such as this actually skipped the time-wasting and went right to their sources who do great work for free!
All things considered that's one of the more reasonable things on this list
If they paid me in Asahi or Sapporo beer, I'd be happy to consider it.
Is it bad that the first thing that went through my mind was "What brand of beer?"
Ohhhhhh, ok. Now I get why Banksy doesn't ever get money for his stuff: it's FUN!
How come you never see gig posts seeking s****y, talentless artist-wannabes for no pay?
I don't need exposure if you found me, and my resume is good enough if you want me.
So this lunch thing, are we talking prime rib or the dollar menu? Cause there is a scale here
I can personally attest that a minimum of a half hour to a maximum of six hours can be required for even the simplest photo editing job. 30 minutes x 100 = 2.08333333 days for 25 bucks? kiss my a*s

Yup. They think because you can crochet, you will make stuff for them for free... I just give a ridiculously high quote hoping they will bugger off.... So far - none of them have... Maybe I should go higher...?
"This week, I'm reviewing this awesome custom blanket crocheted by _____. She's REALLY GOOD, and she might do it for YOU for FREE!"
Well, if he can't draw his own, and he surely can't write.... Good luck to him...
I completely back this quote because of it's context. I've disagreed with so many of them and with what the people have been saying about artists, but this one in particular, I side with. What Doreen Costa is actually disagreeing with is a Rhode Island Tourism Campaign that had unnecessary expenses regarding hiring a designer. She is simply stating her opinion, which I find quite reasonable and relevant, about the fact that the leader of the campaign paid a graphic designer $1 million to design a logo for the campaign. Doreen is saying that it was a completely unnecessary expense when the state has access to design avenues they can utilise that WON't add extra cost to the public through tax. She is basically sticking up for the tax paying citizens as well as trying to right by artists. So, this should not be on here because it's got nothing to do with what this post is about. Please remove it. Find more info here: http://www.golocalprov.com/news/ri-tourism-campaign-in-chaos
This is cool. They could have given a cash prize to a much deserving student and saved the tax payers money. Corruption is rife...
I'd be like "So you 're paying for my food, travel and accommodations at the very least right?"
I've apparently grossly-misunderstood how Christianity worked. Thanks for the inform!
That's so sad! People think that because you are "gifted" it's easy for you it must be free.
Here are three things I do. One of them is my paid job, the others are things I wish I could get paid for. Attorney: 4 years of college so I could go to law school, 3 years of law school, intense studying so I could pass the bar exam, and continuing education and on-the-job training. Singer: A lifetime of singing, several years of voice lessons, and hours upon hours of practice for every solo and/or choir concert. Photographer: 3 years of high school photography classes, 4 years of college photography classes, and continually improving my skills by trying different things with my camera and manipulating exposure in the "lab" (which is now Photoshop but I used to work in a darkroom). I don't see any difference in the amount of dedication it took to acquire the necessary skills for any of the three things I do. So if I get paid for being an attorney because I worked hard at it, hell yes artists should get paid too.
Unfortunately I've accepted a job like this once and got scammed into another one. I didn't mind at the time since I was just starting and got almost full creative freedom to make the cover art for a bands album. They of course would start paying me later on once they start selling their music and booking gigs. Never heard from them again and it was a lesson learned. Never had clients since asking me to work for free, even friends expect they would have to pay some if they ask me for some designs and I just charge them a reduced rate.
Art is a beautiful thing - if someone doesn't want to pay for it then they don't get the luxury of enjoying it. It's called even exchange...
Without the rich patrons of the Middle ages and up to the present we would have no art in all our museums around the world So why do people think that Artists and other talented people would or could or should work for free Or ever have As the old expression goes "The workman is worth of His Hire"
Load More Replies...Why would anyone think it's a good idea to not pay hard-working artists?
Well, it is rather simple. Being cheeky in combination with not understanding supply an demand means that you do not get your work done by skilled people. Unless you are in a true situation of power. Unpayed long-term interships would be an example for the latter. In that case "do it for your CV" is pretty similar to "do it for exposure"...
I should not be surprised, I've had a creative job for over a decade, but the sheer degree of derision and rudeness ist just astonishing.
