While gis accomplishments are still very impressive, he didn't really change his career as it's implied here. He enlisted in the navy at the age of 16 and because of his outstanding grades and dedication was funded by them and went through their educational programs to become a medical officer and pilot, due to his excellent work he qualified for the space program. All his seemingly different career steps are connected to each other and parts of his navy career. It's still very impressive and he's a very smart guy, but it's not as outlandish as it seems from an outside point of view. He had lots of support and profited from military programs. Without that he'd most likely not be able to get where he is. I'm not saying that to shame him, but to encourage people who do their best without that help and to put his accomplishments into perspective. He IS talented, but he also had a good potion of good luck. You really need both to succeed.

I have often thought this when I have seen his story, thinking each career spring-boarded him in to the next. He is an extremely accomplished guy, and can be an inspiration for many. If you are in the military for more than wanting combat you should take any offer they can give you. Many lives have been made great by the military, but more lives have been ruined. This dude had the brain and the brawn.

If I talked to anyone the way that customers talked to me in a call center, and my boss heard it, I would be fired. I think businesses should start firing customers that are abusive to staff and then maybe customer service wouldn't be the s**t job it is today

I've actually been late because I had a bad case of blistered feet last summer, which had slowed down my pedestrian's pace by about 2/3. A coworker, known to be a lot later than me (other department, they start later because it doesn't make sense to sit at a telephone from 6 o'clock on, that won't ring before 9 anyway...), picked me up when he drove by. Actually, he was the best coworker I had in that ... uh, place.

Are you someone that ends up working long hours and/or on weekends? Mei Phing revealed that it happens to a lot of people because they lack clarity on their performance goals, and spend hours dealing with unimportant small tasks. “Set up an alignment meeting with your boss to confirm you're focused on the right priorities and a monthly session to ensure you're progressing in the right direction.”

Over the years I have gone through at least 4 laptops. Each time I got a new one they backed up the information from the previous one and reloaded it onto the new one. Now my documents folder has a documents subfolder which has a documents subfolder which has a documents subfolder etc, etc, etc... Recently IT moved us over to the cloud. Guess what I just got? Yep, a new master documents folder. The madness never ends.

The CEO of the company I work for looks FREAKISHLY like this guy. I Googled him to see them side by side and I swear if this show was being filmed now instead of like 10 years ago you would not be able to convince me they aren't the same person.

My company just got bought by a bigger company about 6months ago, so far about 8 people gave their notices, just an example- we would get summer/holiday bonuses, last Xmas we got $1400, we might just get a $20 gift card , just an example, the people that left had been there at least 15 or more years

Pretty much me when we got a new store director. I'd been there longer than he's been out of high school. Everybody was nervous. I gave zero f***s. I was like "Let him fire me. I don't give a $#!+. He'd be doing me a favor." No such luck. He turned out to be a complete douchebag, and I left a year later. I hear it's gotten much worse there.

Me teaching the other tech how to operate the slit lamp so they will stop scheduling me on Monday to cover telemed and because they person who is supposed to train her seems to have more important things to do than their job description. When I was trained by them, I got 40 mins of their time. Was told they would be back to train the new tech in a few weeks and would give me more training then as well. It's been months. There are doctors that needed years to master slit lamp but sure I'll figure it out in 40 mins and pass my vast well of knowledge on to others.

Had a new hire show up and no management was there and I didn't know she was coming. Didn't know she applied until they said her drug test came back and she was good to work. I walked in said welcome. She didn't show the next day. Found out she stepped down into her original position but failed to show up there as well. It's been a week. They come in bright eyed and bushy tailed then realize management sucks. Then management wonders why no one stays. Luckily I was there before management got there and have had to show then how things go.

Coworker stole my good torch lighter the other day. Borrowed it to light a blunt and wandered off by the time I got outside to get it back. He'd been hanging around the store for hours, drunk, on his day off. I figured it was a small price to pay for his absence. The good pens I keep clipped in specific places, makes them harder (though not impossible) to accidentally steal.

My current position there is no phone anywhere near me and I love it. Phones were removed because my manager didn't want us being bothered by nonsense; she has a desk phone and so does the supervisor but noone else does. Her theory is if it's that important they can email or walk the 30 seconds over to our building (we don't interact with customers so it's only coworkers) . Our work is too important to be constantly interrupted by impatience and nonsense by salesmen.

The public sector organisation I work for has this. After 5 years service you can apply for sabattical, fully paid to conduct research, take a volunteer placement or anything that you can prove to the company will enhance your continuous professional development or diversify your experience. I took 6 months last year to complete a building conservation course on full pay.

I recently retired after 30 years teaching. I consistently burned through every sick and personal day I was given annually (18 total per year) I worked with people who retired with 200-300 accumulated paid time off at retirement and every one of them said they regret not using the time when they were working. I took that advice at a very young age and went with it and I don't regret a minute I ever took off work. When I retired I had 1.8 PTO and they wouldn't pay me for them lol. The rule is they will pay you 25% of your accumulated PTO at retirement. I got all of them, basically. Winning!!

I once asked a female co-worker to go hang out (not a date) at a restaurant/bar downstairs. I had asked other people as well, male and female, just trying to make friends at a new job. I then somehow got a "reputation" for hitting on all the women at work. WTF? That escalated quickly. I have since not tried to make friends with co-workers.

Recently, my boss pitched the idea of the team brunching together. The others seemed on board with the idea, but to me, it's just horrifying. I spend most of my week around them (I love my team), but honestly, aside from the very sparse occasional drink after work, I don't want to spend my free time with them as well. Or like, only if the brunch counts as paid time ;P

Gets interesting when you largely do make the rules, and have just screwed up, and are hoping they don't put that together. (Did I severely overcharge someone on some canned cocktails? Yes. Was it because I was still processing his previous question, which was "are these the same canned cocktails my buddy bought?" Also yes. I genuinely felt bad and was very glad when he came back to return them and get the ones he wanted, at the correct price.)

A manager I had called me a nickname only my family ever used and it was wierd. Like no, that's not what I ever go by outside of my house so it's other full name or this shortened variation not that nickname ever.

1981 I'm 27 live in canada lots of management experiance great references Moved to a new province starting wage at my new job 2.65 an hour, after 3 months got .5 cent raise woohoo worked there 25 years until I retired, was top level manager making 4900. a month no benifits no retirement plan. but loved my job.

My first job was $4.25 an hour at a grocery store. After nearly 10 years I made it all the way to almost $12 (state wage increases and it was unionized). Then I became a waitress for $3.25 and hour
