Let’s face it, science is a complicated matter. When it comes to subjects like physics, chemistry, or biology, you often feel confused by the mass of the topics. Flipping through textbooks makes the velocity of your thoughts as rapid as light. Hearing terms you can’t even begin to comprehend — you can almost feel the electricity in the air, can't you? Well, fear not! Even if the scientific world can seem like very serious business, there’s plenty of entertainment, too.

If you think science can't be hilarious, then take a look at this 436k-member-strong group over on Facebook. Aptly titled 'Science Memes', this community is dedicated to cheering your inner nerd by sharing jokes that are scientifically proven to leave everyone in stitches.

We at Bored Panda have gone through their feed and gathered some of the most hilarious posts to brighten your day, especially if you’re fluent in geek. So find your lab coat, grab your glasses, and get ready to test your smarts by laughing throughout this list. Be sure to upvote your favorite memes and let us know what you think about them in the comments!

Psst! You can find even more science-related goodness in our earlier posts right here and here.

Science and humor go surprisingly well together; this Facebook group is a perfect example. Since its creation in January 2020, it has aimed to entertain science lovers with some quality memes and establish a unique community of like-minded people.

With thousands of members eagerly waiting for new hilarious jokes to grace their feeds, they have succeeded.

Although the group’s whole purpose may seem daunting to some, many imagine the scientific world as a bunch of extra-brainy people chaotically writing equations on the whiteboard and shouting “aha!” occasionally.

But as you’re scrolling through this list, you’ll notice that you don’t need a Ph.D. to get the science jokes people share! Although some entries may require some extra research to get what they mean, you get an A just for effort.

Not "all" sunlight frequencies are reflected as some are absorbed. It's those absorbed frequencies that cause damage to vampires. This is why direct sunlight kills but reflected "moonlight" does not.

In addition to the fact that security cameras are low resolution, those deep space pictures are composites. They take the same picture over and over and then overlay them. They also add the colors with computers (they assign different elements different colors for easier scientific analysis). So while what we see is clear and beautifully colorful, it isn't the original picture.

According to Chelsea Parlett-Pelleriti, a professor of statistics at Chapman University, blending science with humor and presenting difficult scientific terms in a witty way sparks a desire to learn more. "When I was learning, [making memes] was a good way to digest things," Parlett-Pelleriti said, explaining she started out using humor as a teaching tool for herself. "I tried to make things that I wished that I had as a person learning statistics."

The professor started posting entertaining content on Twitter and TikTok and soon realized that she can share aspects of her highly technical field in a more accessible way, inspiring broader masses to delve deeper into the subject. "The most flattering feedback I've gotten so far is that people will say, 'my goal in life is to learn enough statistics to understand this TikTok or to understand this meme. To me, that says that I'm doing something that allows them to still feel included in the community," Parlett-Pelleriti added.

In a 2020 study, Dr. Sara Yeo, an associate professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Utah found that lighthearted humor can be a useful strategy for scientists to engage audiences in topics they may know little or nothing about. "Laughter works," she told SciCommBites. "If we find something funny, we find it more engaging. If we find a scientist funny, we find them to be more likable."

Somewhat related (somewhat) - Does anyone know that if you pour a bunch of a fine, floating substance, (powdered cinnamon, for example) on top of water, to the point it covers the surface, you can then stick your hand in and pull it out.... and it will be dry. Try it with a cup and a finger. And when it works, thank Mr. Wizard, a science show from the 80s.

Apparently this is how it is for tadpoles. They aren’t big enough or strong enough to break the surface tension, so instead, they create a little bubble at the top of the water and then breathe in the bubble.

This is a vine snake, it is in fact venomous, but the fangs that deliver the venom are in the back of their mouth making it harder to bite something as large as a human limb. They are usually pretty docile and just slither away.

It's like pygmy rattlesnakes, they're highly venomous but they're fangs are so tiny it's difficult for them to get through the skin unless they bite you in certain areas and they're more venomous than most other rattlesnakes. We had them in southern Florida. I knew all the snake's down there.

In the study, researchers randomly appointed students to watch two different versions of one clip. The video was of a physicist doing stand-up comedy and telling benign science jokes that don’t have any target at all. "We either had the laughter embedded in the video or removed the laughter," Dr. Yeo explained. "[Students] were randomly assigned to a laughter condition or a no-laughter condition. So laughter is a social cue — when we hear laughter around us, we think that something is funny. This is why sitcoms, for example, have piped in laughter, it's to indicate a joke to us."

"Sure enough, respondents who saw the video that had laughter thought the video was funnier." The professor added that this increased the amount of amusement participants felt from it. They then continued to ask students a series of questions: "Do you like this scientist? Do you think that the scientist is an expert? Do you think they are credible? And in all cases, the sort of more laughter or more mirth, more experienced humor is associated with higher perceptions of credibility, higher perceptions of likability," she said, adding that the main idea is that laughter can humanize you.

"Incorrect; scientists have found clumps of hair in coprolites that date back to the existance WAY EVEN BEFORE dinosaurs. If they had hair, and they groomed themselves, we would probably find it in their poo from time to time. That being said, feathers preserve just fine and we ARE finding plenty of fossilized impressions of those with many dinosaurs in recent years. So is there a better way to add some zing to your studies than creating a few funny memes about it? Well, it definitely makes it more entertaining. Memes can be used in a variety of ways, after all, and they always grab our attention due to their contagious nature. As Bradley E. Wiggins, Ph.D., author of The Discursive Power of Memes in Digital Culture and department head of Media Communications at Webster Vienna Private University, told us in a previous interview, these humorous images have been a part of digital culture for nearly 20 or more years now, and they are becoming more and more popular.

"The difference in awareness is due to the proliferation of a massive amount of content created, consumed and shared widely nearly all the time especially since cellular networks have increased the capacity for bandwidth," he told Bored Panda. "Their apparent increase in popularity stems from the truncated form of communication they allow. In other words, memes help you to keep it simple and short, but not without a possibly huge impact in terms of humor, but most interestingly because of resonance with an issue, a person or group, etc. at a given point in time," Wiggins added.

Whether it’s a way to share easily digestible information with the world or something that helps us unwind from our everyday troubles, the list of why memes are so appealing to us is seemingly never-ending. "Within an image and possibly also text on the image, it becomes possible to recontextualize the image, the moment, the event, etc.," Wiggins said, adding that memes become something we can digitally handle and transfer to others.

"It's ultimately an aspect of social ties to one another deteriorating over time causing the need for connecting with others to take the form of sharing memes, at least in one way of seeing this overall picture," the professor noted.

When it comes to science and using memes as a tool for teaching, the professor advised you to proceed with caution since there’s a fine line between truth and fiction. Wiggins stated that "with the preponderance of fake news but also the inability of people to 'trust' facts," he would be quite skeptical of the current political atmosphere to use memes as a way to learn new subjects and better understand the world around us.

"However, in terms of using memes in the classroom to make a point about something, say, for example, how certain social movements communicate their identity, then absolutely," he concluded.

Gold, an even better conductor than copper. And Uranium does not produce clean energy. It does produce energy, but U-238 has a half life of 4 and a half billion years.

Actually, the electrical conductivity of copper is higher at 5.96 x10^7 S/m than gold which is 4.11×10^7 S/m. Gold is used for connectors not so much for its conductivity as it's chemical inertness. Same goes for bonding wires in ICs, I believe.

While i get the feeling you dont actually want to talk about it because it doesnt fit your narrative... For us (Canada): "A typical 600-megawatt CANDU nuclear reactor produces approximately 90 tonnes of heavy metal nuclear fuel waste annually. " How many tonnes of ash does a typical 600-megawatt coal plant produce a year? How many tonnes of CO2 does a typical natural gas plant produce in a year? No power production is "clean" - Solar produces a lot of toxic waste chemicals, wind kills birds... choose your poison? PS. I live close to a very large nuclear power plant (3,100 MW), lived here for 22 years, no concerns.

I had a sociology professor back in college, who passed out a bunch of those tiny cups you put pills in to dispense them. He asked us to start spitting in them… collect our saliva. After we had a bunch of saliva in them… he told us to drink it. We were like… “Ewww. No! Gross!” And he pointed out, “Why? You swallow it all day long.” Hmmm… true. His point was that… once it leaves our bodies, society has conditioned us to believe it’s gross. So what other things has society conditioned us to believe is unacceptable when, in fact, it’s quite normal? There’s your philosophical sociological question for the day! ;)

I'm so disheartened by the 11.6 thousand likes this got... plagiarism is not citing your source and/or not coming up with anything new to add. The amount of sources are completely irrelevant. Sorry but this is one of those jokes that's only funny if you can go "hahaha so true" which you cannot.

Does he have any "strength" as giant-man? He's just big and heavy. His strength as Giant-man just comes from his sheer mass.

Ooooook, so the Pim Particle is supposed to shrink the space between atoms, right? So there are two possibilties when Scott went "subatomic". One, the atoms are forced together causing nuclear fusion and an enormous release of energy, or two he becomes so dense he collapses into a black hole, which immediately evaporates to Hawking radiation causing an enormous release of energy. Either way, when Ant Man went subatomic it should have caused a massive explosion.

Not only how you cook it, but also how the beef is raised. Grass fed beef is as lean as chicken. One reason why our meat is unhealthy is because they are feeding them things that are not a natural part of their diet.

In what universe are white bread, cheese and red meat healthy instead of mostly empty calories, artery-clogging hard fat and carcinogens? Sure, meat and cheese have some good nutrients, but white bread is just c**p that tastes nice.

well the trouble is, in USA, that "cheese" is not in fact cheese and the patty is mostly blood and leftovers ground up into goop and fried (google pink goo macdonalds if you do not believe). Also, I believe that's a burgerking but same criticism applies. OTOH, here are real burgers - handmade patties from actual ground beef, with actual cheese: https://www.tripadvisor.co.za/Restaurant_Review-g312673-d10196476-Reviews-RocoMamas_Stellenbosch-Stellenbosch_Western_Cape.html

I can sort of see it. If I were sitting around thinking about Galileo's measurements of inertia and then I watched a few apples fall I could understand having the thought "how are they moving if they start with no inertia?" and then you realize you are surrounded by pretty similar roundish objects that you can probably drop or throw a few of without anyone really caring so you drop one and toss one to the side and see they kind of do the same thing, and then you think "huh, if tossed one far enough would it go around the world and hit me?" and then you go inside and start plotting out Kepler's measurements until your obsessive mildly autistic brain is satisfied by which point you have figured it out enough to write a book. It also helps that you have a solution to the problem of division by almost zero in the back of your head from when you made a sizable pass at figuring out that hot topic in math and that some of those ideas make it so you are already more interested in changes.

This is exactly how pseudoscience works! Coming up with an explanation that makes sense on the surface doesn’t mean you’ve proven a fact. It means you’ve generated a hypothesis and now need to test it rigorously. When people stop at the first step you know they’re just blowing smoke (ie: 99.9% of pop psychology)

You poor little soul never watched baby coconuts roll upwards searching for the milk of momma coconut? They make little sniffing noises. A coconut can have up to 5 baby nuts at once

The question is: do you want a sphere or a cube at your destination AND is it efficent to make the sphere cubic at the destination, or not. If you need spheres anyway this is another matter entirely. I need more context. Maybe the pyramid needs spheres as doors or for indiana jones traps?

But it's not necessary to suffer from the fever symptoms and the body has other methods to fight bacteria as well. And we must be aware that the body is capable of raising the temperature to such high level that can kill us. Well, bacteria will get killed as well but MAYBE it would be a good a idea to survive, right??

Difference between fever and temperature I think. I hold that an otherwise healthy adult is better off having a temperature to help kill a virus or other infection, but I would not suffer a fever without taking anything - if the temperature is edging towards fever, take the pill

But it doesn't work all square roots, just that one. (All products involving nine up to its square have digits that add to nine: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81). But the square root of 25 is not 7, for instance or 36 9. It's a coincidence, not a methodology.

Deep breath everyone because here is some math: for any number that is divisible by nine, when you add all the digits together it becomes a multiple of nine. That's why I know that 7245 is a multiple of nine without dividing.

    Now do it with 16! 9 is unique though in math 9x2 = 18. Take 2-1=1, 9-1=8, answers put together 18. 9x3 = 27. 3-1=2. 9-2=7. Answers put together 27. and so on up to 9x9=81

write from top to bottom, 0 to 9, then write next to those numbers from top to bottom 9 to 0. You get the nine times table from 0 to 9...

I had to Google this one. PV=nRT. The ideal gas Law PV = nRT. Robert Boyle found PV = a constant. That is, the product of the pressure of a gas times the volume of a gas is a constant for a given sample of gas. In Boyle's experiments the Temperature (T) did not change, nor did the number of moles (n) of gas present.
