There are some truly terrible things happening in the world right now. Every day, a different disaster. And no matter how far-removed you are from them, many have the ability to affect us on a very deep level. We are humans after all. We should have some level of empathy.
That word was first coined in 1909 by a psychologist called Edward B. Titchener. It's a translation of the German term einfühlung, aptly meaning "feeling into."
When children are swept away in floods, others die as bombs fall, or people go to bed hungry, how can we not have some kind of "feeling into" what they're going through?
Perseverance Is Key
A whole day!? That's too much. 10 seconds, if I can get through these 10 seconds, then I can get through the next 10 seconds. A whole day...you are asking too much.
Load More Replies...It takes incredible strength to do what you're doing. It would have been so much easier to pour yourself a drink, but instead you opted for something healthier. Anyone reading your post will be insanely proud of you just like I am.
but you did it that day, and you can do it again tomorrow dear. Good luck
Yippee! That was very hard to accumulate so many hours all strung together like that. It flies by on good days, right? I'd like to say how happy this makes me, it reminds me and gives me hope too.
Six years sober for me this coming August. I learned that if we drink to fight the stress, we wind up with two problems...the original stress, plus a hangover. I have chosen to deal with the stress only. You made that choice, too. Congratulations! Remember this victory the next time you are challenged. You can keep doing it! Hugs!
This Made Smile And Then Go Pet My 15 Year Old Cat
I have two lovely kitties, both 3 years old. When they inevitably pass on, I’m going to start doing this - taking elderly cats home from shelters and giving them love 🥰
I've always adopted older cats when I can. They all seem to have a sense of when they've been given a second chance. They turned out to be lovely pets, and I get to give them the best life until they go over the rainbow bridge…
Load More Replies...Why the heck would people turn over any animal, let alone an old one. It's so awful and I can't fathom this. I'm glad he got a good home for the end of his life.
This often happens when the owners die or go into a care home
Load More Replies...VeryWellMind defines empathy as "the ability to emotionally understand what other people feel, see things from their point of view, and imagine yourself in their place." Essentially, say the experts, it's putting yourself in someone else's position and feeling what they are feeling. Walking a mile in their shoes, so to speak.
It might hurt—but it's actually a good trait to have. And here's why...
Good Fences Make Good Neighbours!
Humans helping humans and animals! this is how it should be. instead of hating
Load More Replies...I grew up in farmland surrounded by forest, and we couldn’t even see our nearest neighbours’ houses at all. Very remote. Never really knew our neighbours. It’s been delightful as an adult getting to know my apartment neighbours :) Suzanne downstairs plays violin beautifully, every afternoon (she’s playing as I type and she sounds amazing). Maureen across the hall and I trade propagated plants, homemade food and cat-sitting services with each other. The family on my other side have the two sweetest little girls who play outside and love chatting to anyone who walks by. I watched another neighbour I’d never met hobbling weakly through the parking lot, and asked if she was okay - she was trying to walk to the hospital 20 mins away so I grabbed my keys and just drove her, gave her my number to call if she needed a ride home. I’ve never had this sense of community before and it honestly feels so good 😊 almost in a primal way, like this is how we’re supposed to live.
This! I live in the flat that belonged to S's grandparents. Thinking about what to get the couple downstairs for their wedding. Hope to be invited to cat sitting for the upstairs neighbour across the road again soon. Oh, look, there's E with her dogs walking past on the street. If I ever end in hospital, J knows where I keep my spare key, she will take care of my cat. And so on and so on. It's just so lovely!
Load More Replies...My sentiment exactly. Bloody immigrants living in my neighborhood doing kind things for those less fortunate. Maybe we should keep them instead of deporting them, huh?
Have only ever met one Romanian person who was working temporarily at the same hospital as me, and they still send Easter and Christmas cards every year, with little hand made friendship bracelets.
The First Number On My Scale Has Been A ’2’ For The Past 21 Years, But Not Today
I was 330 at my lowest, now I'm <250 and heading in the right direction.
Me too! I was 180lbs at my heaviest and my most recent trip to the scale said 148lbs. We both got this!! ::fist-bumps::
Load More Replies...I totally understand this feeling. Was 253 lbs at my highest. Seeing that first number on the scale back in the “1s” is an awesome feeling. Down to 127 lbs today. Keep up the good work!!! ❤️❤️❤️
My brain was thinking that "2" at the start might be normal if you were a kid 21 years ago. Then I realised we weren't talking metric ;-) Well done, you! Keep moving towards a healthier life!

He always wanted to play sports growing up, but he couldn't, so their state championship winning football program rewarded him with a championship ring.
I like to believe that most people are basically good, but it's the few bad apples that make the news.
Load More Replies...Just look at how happy it's made him! It's amazing that such a large population of people are okay with making people sad cry instead of happy cry.
Empathy shouldn't be confused with sympathy and compassion. While all three are related, the latter two are more of a passive connection. "Empathy generally involves a much more active attempt to understand another person," explains the VeryWellMind site.
While many people do feel a level of empathy for others, it's not a universal response. Some human beings are able to meet another's suffering with a stone cold reaction, or none at all. And on the other end of the spectrum are the empaths, who feel so much for others that they end up suffering themselves.

That was a wonderful gift from her. And what a boost to your confidence.
We handed our Ukrainian guest a kippa when he joined us for Shabbat dinner and he was very happy about it :)

Load More Replies...I had a friend of about 10 years and had never seen him without a ballcap. I walked passed him in CostCo twice before he tagged me. Turns out he has a full head of hair, he just likes ballcaps.
It takes so little effort to be this welcoming. Honestly. More people should try it. It’s so much better than being afraid of anyone different.
Go Grandpa
"My dad, a racist hillbilly, told me he didn't want anything to do with my biracial daughter when I was pregnant. Here he is painting her toenails on her 3rd birthday. Proof people can change."
This is a beautiful picture, and hopefully he has changed, but...Sadly, that's not how it works. So many will just like those one or two they know who are "different", but they will still be racist towards others. Hypocrisy is a powerful thing.
Load More Replies...When people actually meet people who are different than them, they realize they aren't actually very different at all. People are just people. No matter what type of people they are.
I’ve been listening to a podcast about WW2 Germany. It’s so interesting that a lot of Nazis had what they considered “good” Jewish people, and did what they could to save them. Hitler, for example, saved his family doctor, who happened to be Jewish. It’s because those were the Jewish folks that the Nazis knew personally, and once you get to know someone different, you realize they’re just as human as you. Horrific that every other Jewish person was affected. Makes me want to take all those racist MAGAs shrieking about immigrants and make them actually go spend a day with an immigrant family and see how they’re genuinely just people, not the scary evil monsters MAGA tries to make them out to be.
Load More Replies...When people learn that you take people at face value rather than race, things might change. You will always have those who only see the colour of their skin and their culture rather than who they are personally. There's good and bad people in every culture. You can't paint every race with the same brush.
Just Saw This On My Timeline, Rocky Is Headed Home
A happy ending for an animal in distress always makes my day. Thanks for caring enough to help.
At least once a week, I read a story about this animal or another falling into a hole they can't get out of. It's time stupid humans put grating or caps over these openings bc they are death traps. Horrible, hideous, slow death traps. BTW, put a d@mn cap on your chimneys!!
I did as well, a couple of weeks ago - wondered why my dog was so excited about the area underneath the outdoor table near his exercise pen one night when I let him out to pee. I was going to just dismiss it and bring him back inside - it was 3am and I was tired. But I was curious XD Now there are two (more) tiny kittens in my family of pets XD (Dog was raised with my adult cats and thus LOVES cats, which is why he was so excited - he smelled new friends under the table!) joseph_and...b433d7.jpg
"Having a great deal of empathy makes you concerned for the well-being and happiness of others. It also means, however, that you can sometimes get overwhelmed, burned out, or even overstimulated from always thinking about other people's emotions." It's a state experts describe as empathy fatigue.
Have you ever felt completely emotionally and physically exhausted, worn out, even depressed after reading/hearing about or seeing the struggles of others? That's empathy fatigue kicking in. It can also leave you feeling numb or powerless, and quite literally fatigued. You may even want to isolate yourself, in order to regain your strength and reboot your energy.
You Are Never Too Old To Learn
My uncle didn't go to school so I am teaching him how to write and he wrote the names of his grandkids for the first time
This is a wonderful story! Thank you for giving him the gift of reading
It is so deeply sad that there are still people in the world who cannot read or write. Good on you for teaching your Uncle.
Man Makes Sure Elderly Neighbor Is Not Alone In Her Last Days!
KUDOS TO HIS MOM AND DAD, FOR RAISING SUCH A WONDERFUL MAN !!!! IT HAD TO start from early on in his life......I see my youngest grandson who is 7 now to be like this...his heart is wayyy bigger than he is already....GOD BLESS THEM....ALL
Winning Isn’t Everything
Kudos to the parents or parent who taught that boy empathy and kindness. 👏🏼👏🏼
The kid in blue was upset because he was in last place, until his opponent in yellow sacrificed his 2nd place to comfort him. They walked to the finish line together. Whoever raised this kid should be awfully proud.
Makes me think of the Brownlee brothers in the World Triathlon Final.
If you have ever been to a Special Olympics event, you will see this all of the time. This young man is the embodiment of kindness and I hope this continues into adulthood.
That young man will be a success in his life! He already knows about kindness!
But as we said before, even though it hurts, empathy is a good thing.
For one, it can help strengthen your relationships. "Empathy allows you to build social connections with others," explain VeryWellMind's experts. "By understanding what people are thinking and feeling, you are able to respond appropriately in social situations."
A Redditor Who Saw My Post About Insurance Turning Me Down For A Prosthetic Finger Messaged Me A Few Weeks Ago Saying He Would Try To Make One
I got the prototype in the mail today. He asked nothing in return.
I got a kid a new thumb after a band saw accident removed his original one. $25,000!! High end prosthetics are super pricey.
It's a shame things like this are so expensive I get the research etc but surely there must come a time when thats paid up as such so then its cost of materials and logistics? Mind u my severly autistic son is have tried for years to get rhe right support for and im failing im exhausted hos dad has brain injury and I look after my 93yo father in law who has munchousens thats fun lol.. but im a MH support worker have been for decades and I think if I cant access rhe resources we desp need what chance do others ! Or maybe im just too worn out to fight hard anymore 😕 xxx
Load More Replies...Believe it or not, charities are blocked from giving out prosthetics or parts for them. I worked for a charity that gave out medical equipment for the disabled, as well as modified houses, etc. Now that the statute of limitations are up, I'll admit I had a secret stash of donated items, and took care of as many people as I could. Such was my life of crime.... :)
There is literally no need for insurance companies. They are nothing but middle men who suck up profits in between patients and medical care facilities and doctors. They are purely parasitic.
Insurance companies are ........sorry I just cannot find the words to describe their nastiness..
I love that people do these things... but I hate that american corporate greed makes this the only hope some people have.
My prosthetic lower leg cost close to $9,000. If my private insurance hadn’t covered all of it, the War Amps would have chipped in the rest. Please, donate to them. They don’t just help children.

Dad Went Out In The Snow To Feed The Birds, And Made A New Friend! It's Official, He's A Disney Princess Now
How much was it to feed the birds, I really hope it was only tuppence
They're more desperate for food then. In the warmer months, they can find insects, grub, etc., and seem to prefer that. In the colder months they're down to grab seeds from your hand.
Load More Replies...There's a woman on Facebook I follow who hand feeds all kinds of birds like this and takes pictures/videos. It requires a lot of patience!
Even though it might not always feel like it, empathy also helps you regulate your emotions. It allows you to manage what you are feeling, even in times of great stress, without becoming overwhelmed, the site notes.
When we can regulate our own emotions, we are better able to respond to the emotions of others.
This Is Like Four Different Levels Of Adorable
I think this is the sweetest story I've ever heard. The fact you still have the tinsel tiara says so much! ❤️
The Most Wholesome Thing
My neighbor's black cat had kittens and they found a baby possum on their deck that must have fallen off of its mom. The mama cat took it in as one of her kittens, but she doesn't understand why this little funny kitten hangs on her all the time
He's also really good at playing dead whenever I yell at him.

A couple of my long-haired cats would come in with slugs clinging to their fur. Does that count?
That’s So Cute
It was my first anniversary and my new spouse was working 6-levels underground in a lab for days. My co-workers ordered flowers to be delivered. I was quite touched by their kindness.
It goes without saying that those who have empathy are more likely to want to help others. But it goes both ways. People are also more likely to help you during your dark moments when they experience empathy.
"Empathy helps us notice other people's needs, understand their distress, and inspire us to alleviate their suffering," reads the site.

Stephen Knight lost everything to m**h: Job, family, home, almost his life. HIV positive and living out of his car, he felt hopeless.
Now clean, he's helped foster 1,200 dogs for recovering d**g addicts-he's the most recent recipient of the HERO award.
Can you please stop censoring words that contain essential information? It seriously destroys the message in so many posts.

gimme all of dem I need to research the ink issue very thoroughly ;P
I love that each puppy is very similar, yet slightly different with their "ink" pattern until you get to the very white one.
I wonder what they are going to look like as they get older? Are they going to get there color back as they get older. I would like to see them in 6 months than a another six months later.
Not sure about huskies, but here's my beloved German Shepherd, Ember, at about 5 months old (on the left) and 12 years old (on the right.) She was even darker-furred as a puppy (will attach photo in another comment, as I can only put one photo per comment, lol.) So basically she started out really solidly dark-furred and lightened through the course of her life until her markings were pretty much gone by the time she was an old lady XD She was pretty much just entirely cream-colored by the end - one of my friends visited and was like "WTF you have a pet DINGO???" XD (She was basically dilute black-and-tan and was registered as "cream and silver") ember_pup_...bc0bd5.jpg

I have a soft spot for people with Down's Syndrome due to an unusual friendship I had with a DS boy who I was warned to stay away from. So, when I saw how cruel the wait staff was to our DS dishwasher, I lost it. I tore into them so hard in the middle of the kitchen the dining patrons could hear me. The manager ran in saying my outburst would get me fired (big deal), but I let that PoS know that I knew he was allowing this sick behavior, and that I was more than willing to report this to the authorities. I cannot tolerate bullies in any setting.
Well done. Downs Syndrome people are the most beautiful people. They have the most loving personalities. They are the people I would most like to get to know.
Load More Replies...I know exactly how that many feels. Been an outcast my whole life. Its rare to find anyone willing to even talk to me, let alone be my friend.
Just got a job request to visit my old neighbour and take her out for some fun. She was a bitter, vengeful person, treated her elderly MIL horrible, and did everything to make my parent's lives harder. But I think everybody deserves to be treated as human being, even if it's hard,. Someone has to be the bigger person in this decades-long-saga. I will visit her and take her on a walk. Then we'll see.
Good on you. Make your own opinion. If she treats you badly, that may be different. But thank you either way for trying.
Load More Replies...Same thing happened to me when I befriended a fellow slimmer at the local gym.
One of the best ways for us to build our empathy is to stop talking and start listening. You won't know what someone is feeling unless you truly hear them out. It's not always easy to be silent when the sound of their suffering is palpable.
That's because your own emotions can pose a significant barrier when noticing what others are feeling, explains VeryWellMind.
"When you are having a conversation and are looking only at your feelings and how you can communicate them, you might not be leaving enough attention available to take in what’s going on at the other end," adds the site. "Making an effort to actively listen can help strengthen your emotional understanding and empathy."

A Coworker Noticed My Boots Needed Replacing, I'm Casual And New Boots Are At My Cost. These Were Waiting For Me At My Workstation
He covertly acquired my size and everything. $179 I just could not afford atm.
At first I read it as coworker noticed my boss needed replacing. Haha.
My now husband did something like that before we were even dating. We worked at a big box store, and I was blowing through a pair of sneakers every six months because I couldn't afford a really good pair. Found the new ones in my locker after lunch one afternoon, and he didn't fess up to it until a couple months later.
After reading most of the posts here, I realized good coworkers are important
Don't beat yourself up if you want to cry yourself to sleep after another day of terrible news. The empathy you feel is a good thing. But we understand that it can be too much at times. And when that happens, remember you can come back to this list—to reboot, and remind yourself that all is not lost in the world.
I Asked My Coworkers To Not Do Huge Decorations On My Desk
My work place is the kind to bubble wrap your whole desk and fill the cubicle with balloons for your birthday. I asked them to keep it low key. The picture is a shelf of my desk.
Everytime i see this 😁 just awesome. Co workers took assignment and ran with it. Homerun, out the ballpark!
LOL. Cute One time years ago where I used to work when I got there my chair was completely wrapped in rolls of diff colored streamers. My keyboard, mouse, monitor and phone were wrapped as gift. I was still unwrapping them when we opened the door and patients started coming in.
Bless your co-worker. Many people don't like a big fuss (or any fuss at all.)
Happy Retirement To My Coworker That Always Brought Us Candy. Thanks For Always Being Awesome, Mark!

BRAVO you guys and gals made his day and mine too So funny I was the guy with all of the candy and I am diabetic. anyone needed something they just got into my desk drawers to get the candy the only one they could not have was the original 100 grand bar as when my sugar was low this was my go to to get my bs up. one day no 100grand bars and in a few mins apologies and a big box of them showed up now in a lock box...for y use only. Thanks guys and gals.
My Grandparents Recreated Their Wedding Photos 70 Years Later
I hear people claim the affection high dies out after a while of marriage. Pictures like this are why I don't believe them.
That they can still fit into the same clothes is amazing. Also from their expressions they are still in love after all these years. Congratulations!
Blessed Buddies
One of my cats brought home a stray cat. Since I had a houseful of cats, one more wasn't going to make or break the situation. But I warned him not to just w!lly-nilly bring strays home. (Screw you, BP)
I feel your pain. I adopted three kittens a while back (two siblings in December and a singleton in January.) That put me at four cats (I have my 9-year-old void girl as well - my beloved tux boy lives with my ex.) That seemed a good number. Then my cat-loving Belgian Malinois found two orphaned 7-week-old kittens in my backyard. .....now I have SIX cats.... XD

You howl all you want Charleston, honey
Awwww. I would 100% buy Charleston a welcome to the neighbourhood present.
My husky would get the zoomies and I went down to apologize to the elderly couple underneath of me. "That's alright honey, we have a little old man down here and its nice to see a new puppy running around. Besides, she doesn't make too much noise.". They then gave me a few treats for my Gracie. Lovely people!
A friend's elderly cat who had gone blind and deaf also had Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS or cat dementia), and she would yowl day and night. Broke my heart bc otherwise she was healthy for her age and very sweet.
i would intro & ask if Charleston would like a puppy playdate with my doggo!

Happy Pride Month, Everyone!
Grandmas are the real, yet often forgotten, heroes of every society. Mine gave me warmth, laughter and love while nobody cared about me. She left 25 years ago, but I think of her every day of my life 💖❤️
Her name was Marianna ❤️ WWI broke out when she was 2 years old (she remembered that all the churchbells were announcing the declaration of war). Her dad had to go into war for some years and when he came back he build them a primitive house. The house burnt down shortly after and her dad died young. When she was 13 she had to leave school and take care of the house and her 4 siblings. When she was 14 her mom died and all the siblings had to go to different farmers to work as maids or fieldworkers. She married my grandpa at 25, while he was 45. Had 9 living children and some misscarriages along the way. Hard work. Yet her heart was always full of sunshine and laughter. Tbh, I don't know how she did that. She could be happy like a little kid when something good happened. She died with so much grace and humour. She was nothing but love, strenght and optimism. My shining bright star ⭐

I had my first birthday party when I was 38. It was just chef’s kiss!
My mom never had a real birthday party growing up, what with the depression and war and all that. For her 90th she said she wanted a party with cake and balloons and singing. You can be we gave it to her.
My Dad came from a large family and had never had a cake til I was old enough to bake him one. His birthday treat would be a bowl of strawberries (June birthday).

I once got a job by giving my potential employer a low risk compromise. I didn't have much experience, but I also knew I could do the job well, and I really needed it. I could feel her hesitation in my interview. So, I told her to hire me as an independent contractor for 1 month, and if she wasn't completely convinced, she'd be no worse off than where she started. It worked.

My Grandpa’s 88th Birthday Was A Few Weeks Ago
My sister got him a coloring book and crayons. He says he’s never colored before, but he seems to enjoy it. He shows all his visitors the pages he’s finished. He’s colorblind, so some of the puppies are pink, but he’s so happy. He melts my heart.
As a lefty myself, I noticed that first off, before anything else XD

Ah yes but according to Republicans California is a dystopian mess all the the wile red states are poor as hell with starving people
Us California liberals get bashed by MAGA, but a synonym of liberal is "a little extra" and "abundant".
Meanwhile it contributes tens of billions more to the federal government than it receives (more than any other state, most of which take more than they give).

In some school districts, if your parents have forgotten, or can't afford, to load more money onto your lunch account, and the account is zero, they must offer you a plain peanut butter sandwich with a carton of milk, but nothing else. Its food, but its humiliating
Oh really! What about kids who are allergic to peanuts and lactose intolerant? 🥲

My 97-Year-Old Grandma Doesn’t Use Computers, But I Found A Meme Years Ago That I Thought She’d Like So I Sent It In The Mail. Turns Out She’s Kept It At Her Bedside Ever Since
My two adult sons stayed with me for a couple of months last fall. They each put on about 20 pounds. I was so happy to have someone to cook for again! And they were happy to have all their childhood favorites, even though most evenings they were groaning like after Thanksgiving dinner.

Sometimes I think of how different my life would be if I hadn’t been able to easily access a (free) abortion 11 years ago. I’d be much worse off. My child would have suffered. I was in the middle of the worst part of my a*******n, beyond broke, and that’s no environment for a child. Plus I have health issues that would have complicated the pregnancy. Instead of 2 people suffering, I chose 0 people suffering. Absolutely horrifies me what’s happening in the US right now. Please stay safe, American panda ladies ❤️
Meanwhile here in the UK, abortion has been completely decriminalised and birth control pills are easily available and usually free.
Let's hold off the celebration until we see what a Reform government (that we seem to be inexplicably hurtling towards) does in 2029.

Cheaper and easier in case of future laws to get regular contraception pills. They can be used (2 or 3 doses depending on which pill) as emergency contraception. Doctors are only too happy to help with a legal prescription and some theoretical advice on how to use it in an emergency.
Not in some states. Some states it's difficult to even get contraception now, especially for minors.
Load More Replies...Women in red states should go on s*x strike until they get their right to reproductive health care back. Even if you are actively trying to get pregnant, the current laws in some states put your life at risk in the case of ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. 30% of pregnancies miscarry, and right now, in red states women miscarrying are being denied essential healthcare. Patients in Texas have been denied necessary D&Cs because the doctors could not conclusively show that the fetus was dead, resulting in sepsis, patients requiring blood transfusions, and even in some cases dying. There's a misconception that miscarrying is safe for women, but without D&C it can be fatal.
A séx strike sounds nice and all, but did you forget that things like rápe, incést, and séxual ássault exist? Not to mention that women can be dosed with drúgs or plied with alcohol until they're blackout drunk and unable to give consent. What good will a "séx strike" do for those women?

A Photo Of My Mother, Locking The Door To A Place Of Her Own, For The First Time In 40 Years
My mother hasn’t had a place of her own in over 40 years. She had my big brother out of wedlock when she was 20 years old, and moved back in with my grandparents after he was born. She briefly lived with my dad after I came along, but we all moved back in with grandma and grandpa very shortly after they had divorced. This happened again with my little sister’s father and when my grandpa passed away, my mother took care of my grandma in exchange for a place to continuously stay without having to pay rent. After my grandma passed, she was not able to get back on her feet for another decade, staying with an old friend who needed care as well; but he eventually began to mistreat her. Just recently, I was able to help her move from Florida to Tennessee, closer to my husband and I, where she could transfer with the job she had successfully kept for two years and also received a promotion prior to the move. She has always had either children or a man who mistreated her around, and this is the first time in 40 years she had been able to pay rent on her own funds as well as free and able to kick back and relax with no one to take care of but herself, her bird Coco, and her kitty Toby. She was ecstatic and overwhelmed with joy as we moved her belongings in and she arranged them, as she could choose their placement through her own judgment. I’m extremely proud of my mom for making it this far and overcoming so much. She absolutely deserves this and is entering a brand new era of life. No matter how old you may think you are and how it may seem like it’s too late, things can get better, friends!
The every day horrors women go through and have to survive and legislators still think we don't have brains to make our own choices.
Neighbor Knocked On Our Door And Gave Us This Beautiful Plate
When I was a teenager we lived (suburbs of Toronto) across the street from an Iranian family. The family included a man who did all the cooking and cleaning for the family. That gentleman used to bring our family a dish of Iranian food at least a few times a week. It was amazing and is probably what began my love of trying food from every culture!
A hen night thrown for me by work colleagues was in an Iranian restaurant. Love trying foods from around the world.
Load More Replies...I love this. I used to have a Turkish neighbour who would bring food over constantly. I don’t care for the spices and my wife is celiac. We tried so hard to tell her that we can’t eat the food but we thought she didn’t understand. When I finally spoke to her son I hoped he could translate for us. He laughed and told me that he’d try but “you can’t really make my mum stop giving food to her neighbours. I’ve tried all my life.” Ha ha. Awesome lady. Awesome neighbours.
I had a Chinese couple living next door to me in Melbourne...if I was out in the garden he would call out and pass a bowl of food over the fence for me. My elderly neighbour, John over the back fence, would hand a bag with veges he had grown in his garden, he was nearly 90 years old. When I made meals with his veges I'd hand the bag back with a container of food for his dinner. Both wonderful neighbours...made a huge city feel ok for a while.
Being A Good Neighbor
I'm wondering if the OP is from Massachusetts or the New England area? I was born and raised in MA, but I've lived in quite a few different places during my time in the military and I would get confused looks, if I referred to the mini bottles of booze as nips. They have always been called nips here, but I'm curious about what my fellow Pandas call them?
I live in Southern California and I'm not sure we have a specific word for them other than "mini bottles", but I've heard "take a nip of booze"/"have a nip" as a phrase my whole life, so it wouldn't seem strange to me if someone called the small bottles that.

Our Neighbor Just Gifted Us $200
It was our next door neighbor since my wife saw one of them knocking on our front door while we were cleaning. We obviously went over and thanked them, introducing ourselves since we hadn't talked to them before. Apparently they're relatively new to the neighborhood and wanted to give us a holiday gift.
Back in 2018 I was living with my son and his 4 small children. Stupid wife had run off. I moved in to help. It was busy, exhausting, sad, and beautiful all at the same time. I vented to a neighbor one morning about how we missed her paycheck and Christmas was going to be tight but we'd do the best we could. Christmas Eve she showed up with cookies, a gift for each child, and $500 in an envelope. I was so touched, I would have collapsed if my son hadn't been there to catch me. There are beautiful and generous souls in the world.
