Our Earth can be a rough place. But you don't need me to remind you of it. The media is already full of stories about anger, deceit, and wreckage. And while we can't ignore our problems, hoping they might just go away, we do sometimes need a break from them.

To remind you that there's still plenty of goodness in this world, Bored Panda put together a new list of feel-good posts from all across the internet. Personal growth, empathetic relationships, we included everything. But if you scroll through the publication and your heart still needs more warmth, fire up our earlier renditions of wholesomeness here, here, and here.

Well, damn. All the best to you. I have a couple of friends that are, respectively, paraplegic and quadriplegic. I know what it would be like for either of them to be able to walk, or even just stand up. It's something most of us take for granted, but it's life changing. Truly. When it gets hard and tiring, know that we are pulling for you.

COVID has posed a threat not just to our bodies but our minds as well. But it's quite difficult to determine increases in cases of depression and anxiety because of a lack of data. However, despite these gaps, a team largely based at the University of Queensland in Australia has tried to come up with an estimate for 2020, and the numbers are devastating.

If the pandemic had not happened, the model used by the researchers suggested there would have been 193 million cases of major depressive disorder worldwide, whereas an estimated 246 million cases actually occurred, a 28 percent increase, or an added 53 million cases. For anxiety disorders, the number of cases was anticipated at 298 million, but there may have been as many as 374 million cases—a 26 percent jump, representing an additional 76 million cases.

According to clinical psychologist Seth J. Gillihan, Ph.D., anxiety can come from any situation we care about when the outcome is uncertain. "Common sources include our health, relationships, finances, work, time pressure, and social situations, among others," the creator of The CBT Deck for Anxiety, Rumination, & Worry, a set of cards that helps people to find equilibrium and focus on what they love, told Bored Panda.

"Anxiety is our mind and body's way of getting our attention and telling us to pay attention to something important. Unfortunately, anxiety is often an unwelcome and unpleasant experience because it can be so uncomfortable and even overwhelming."

We fostered a puppy to become a service dog. After he left us for his training, we were told that he was rejected because he had "too much life', but found a new role he loves as an avalanche rescue dog.

Sheryl Paul, who has an MA in Jungian Counseling and has guided thousands of people worldwide through her books, courses, private sessions, and blog, reassured Bored Panda that everyone has anxiety. "It's built-in to our biology and is part of our evolutionary survival mechanism," the author of The Wisdom of Anxiety said.

"But the most common causes of anxiety I see in modern life are among highly sensitive people who struggle with the fear of loss or death and the need for certainty. This can be triggered around parenting, money, relationships, identity, the planet — in short, the things that matter most to us. Anxiety is the psyche’s way of letting us know that we’re in danger, so it serves an essential evolutionary function. We run into trouble, however, when we misinterpret symptoms of anxiety — racing heart, shortness of breath, tight chest — as true, physical danger instead of understanding that most likely the danger is internal."

"For example, people who find their way to my work often struggle with relationship anxiety ... which causes them to spiral down a rabbit hole of trying to figure out if they're with the 'right' person. It's the wrong question and can lead to mental torture. Is there danger in intimate relationships? Absolute. But if you're with a safe partner the 'danger' is pointing to unhealed beliefs and wounds around love and intimacy which are then projected onto the current, loving partner."

According to Paul, anxiety manifests itself in other areas in a pretty similar way: "we project our inner sense of unsafety and vulnerability onto health or kids or work or money or the earth. Everything changes when we understand the concept of projection and can start to take true responsibility for what needs attention inside."

I experienced such animal. She was left by her owner at vet and they kept her around as she was obese and needed daily medication. She started doing this by herself and when my dog was in anesthesia after surgery she just checked and walked further. 15 mins later she came back, sit next to my dog (on heating blanket) and sure enough minute later my dog started waking up. Every animal is stressed by anesthesia and this obese Labrador laid next to my dog being calm and letting me pet her too, looking at my dog waking up and sniffing her. It wasn't first surgery but this time she was calmest and clearly comfortable. It was awesome. When my dog was ready to leave with me, this absolutely fantastic soul gave us tail wiggle and sniff and went further on her round to other patients. I wouldn't believe if I didn't see how powerful that is.

From the original post: Thank you everyone for all of the kind words and positivity!!! It seriously means so much! Finding out that my PT scan showed no evidence of disease was the best news and made for the best day of my life!!! For those of you who would like to read my whole story, here is my blog that I’ve kept up the whole time since my diagnosis: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kylerfischer This will answer a lot of the questions that everyone has been asking, this will also give you the whole story. I plan to write a book about my whole journey and all of this blog will be included in the book. I also have six more months of what they call “maintenance chemo” because the cancer I had was super aggressive. Over my whole healing journey it spread all over my colon, small intestine, liver, kidneys, spine, bladder, stomach, r****m, secum, omentum, and some tumors grew between the muscle and fat layer on my lower stomach.

From Reddit: "Background info. This happened in Firenze, Italy. The woman has a person who cares for her generally but she didn't show up a couple days ago, and she didn't ask for help from her son. She tried to make herself dinner but couldn't, she said she had pain in her arm and she was tired, so she called 113 (police emergency number). The police understood the situation and sent a car with two cops called Antonio and Giuseppe, who cooked ravioli with tomato sauce for the lady and helped her eat."

Italy could earn millions by sending some their wonderful officers (like these guys) to the U.S. to teach some of our horrible ones how to actually serve and protect, rather than murder and traumatize. There, I said it.

Sheryl Paul said that modern anxiety often manifests as a misguided attempt to find solid ground. An attempt to answer fundamentally unanswerable questions. "The anxious mind believes that if it can land on the 'correct' answer it can find certainty, and that certainty equals safety. The truth is that there's very little that's certain in our day-to-day lives, and certainly, the future is always uncertain," she explained.

"Everything feels even more uncertain right now because of the pandemic and the other systemic issues that have been brought to light these past couple of years, but life has always been uncertain because loss and illness and death exist. The highly sensitive person, who is the person most prone to anxiety, has known this from an early age (the most common early sign of anxiety in highly sensitive children is the fear that their parents will die)."

The good news is that these methods work. The Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA) claims that anxiety disorders are highly treatable. But the bad news is that only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment. The approaches that have proved to be effective are therapy, medication, complementary and alternative treatment, and transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Paul, for example, teaches both on-the-spot tools and deep-dive practices for working with anxiety. "On-the-spot tools are things like Tonglen, which is the Buddhist practice of breathing into the pain or fear and breathing out the opposite. Over time, this helps us re-wire the mind’s habit of pushing away things that are uncomfortable. A significant part of breaking free from anxiety’s stronghold is learning to tolerate discomfort, which means making room for the uncomfortable thoughts and feelings as they arise."

The deep dive practices, on the other hand, hinge on growing what the counselor calls a solid and reliable inner parent or wise self "who can choose which thoughts to respond to and learn how to meet big feelings with compassion."

"Growing spiritual practices that help tap into a sense of trusting life can also be life-changing when struggling with anxiety, for anxiety’s most salient message is that life isn’t safe," Paul said.

"One of the strongest tenets of my work is that anxiety is a protector and a messenger. If we try to get rid of the symptoms too quickly, we miss the message, which is often pointing us in the direction of unhealed places inside that need attention and also an invitation to grow trust. As I often say in my work, the opposite of uncertainty isn’t certainty; it’s trust. And that’s self-trust, trust in others, and trusting in something bigger than you."

I'm glad they found each other. It's amazing how they both have those horns growing out of their heads.

Gillihan said that anxiety's power lies in its ability to affect our whole being—our body, mind, and spirit. "Our bodies will feel the tension and stress that anxiety creates, as our sympathetic nervous system turns on to prepare us for action and our hormone system releases chemicals like cortisol. Our minds feel the strain of anxious thoughts and worries about everything that could go wrong. And our spirits feel the weight of anxiety, which can be a crushing experience when it's really high," the clinical psychologist explained.

So it's important to actively fight it.

Gillihan summarizes his approach to anxiety in three stages which he collectively calls 'Think Act Be.'

"THINK means tend to anxious thoughts, and question the ones that tell us bad things are going to happen. Usually, those thoughts aren't grounded in reality. While bad things do happen at times, our fears don't come true the vast majority of the time. Notice the stories your mind is telling you, and ask yourself if there's another possibility for how things might go—including that things turn out pretty much okay."

Then there's ACT. This includes gradually facing our fears without any actual danger and stopping anxiety from controlling our actions. "Any time we avoid something that causes anxiety, we strengthen our fear [response] and make it more likely that we'll avoid it in the future. Facing our fears makes them shrink," Gillihan highlighted.

"And finally, BE means focus on the present and open to your experience exactly as it is. Anxiety is about the future, so being in the present and noticing your senses tends to decrease anxiety. Opening to your experience can also help to calm the nervous system, since you're no longer fighting to make sure things turn out okay. Just let things be as they are and be willing to give up the control that was never really yours to begin with."

There is a squirrel in my neighbourhood who only has half a tail, he was very scraggly and skinny, with a dull coat, me and my siblings fed him walnuts and peanuts over the course of a few weeks, and now he is a healthy size with very plush fur, all ready for the cold winter ahead! :D He is a little shy but is more comfortable with us now than before, he very often shows up at our back door peeking into the house and hoping for a nut, often with a few other squirrels in tow, lol!

My neighbors dogs were the same way. I'm afraid of them, but I love them, so I give them treats through the chain link fence while I gossiped with their owner. Lol. When I moved away she sent me pics of them looking for me at our meeting spot. My heart broke.

A dog from another street over the hill broke loose one night and wondered over to my street. My wife and I talked to him (an English Springer Spaniel) and he came up onto the porch (1:30 AM). My wife gave him a few of our granddog's treats. Now whenever he breaks loose he comes up and scratches at our door and gives a "woof!" (I'm laughing just thinking of him.) One afternoon he showed up with "a friend." Both had a few treats and cool water on that hot afternoon. We also feed the grey squirrels peanuts and sunflower seeds. When we were away for a week, no nuts or seeds for them. Upon returning we found they had ripped open the seats of two chairs on the porch and pulled all the stuffing out. We went ahead and set out peanuts and seeds for them. The following morning we found a butternut (white walnut) right in front of our kitchen door. A peace offering I guess.

DON'T DO THIS unless the neighbor is ok with it. My neighbor did this, the food thing, and my dog stopped coming when she was called and rushed to the fence every time the neighbor came out. Took weeks to break her after having a discussion with the neighbor.

That's how most museums get their groove. Some guy named Gugenheim decides to share the art he bought (named after him), a physician named Sloane donates thousands of things he collected to create the first public museum (British Museum), or a Turkish potter with 16,000 different hair samples to show the diversity around the world (Avanos Hair Museum). Museums are all about sharing the things we love. Donate stuff or time to make the ones you like better. I have a friend who works as an interpreter whose hobby is collecting the oral history of functionally illiterate Americans (coal miners, indigenous, immigrants, learning disorders, 19th century pioneers, etc). He makes a copy for his own collection and sends the original to the Smithsonian to make sure their stories are included in our history. Some he finds and buys and some he records himself.

When I was living with a friend in his apartment on the 8th floor, I’d leave out leftover seed sometimes from my bird’s cage. It ended up attracting a large number of sparrows, pigeons and the occasional dove, and sometimes a sparrow would get extra bold if we left the door open and come inside looking for more!

Heh, I had this happen the other way around - I went gray in my 20s and with a full beard I look a lot older and my wife looks younger than her age, so a few times people assumed she's my daughter, when in fact she's only 7 years younger and we're both in our 30s...

Dementia takes away memories, but not feelings. He doesn't remember who his grandson is, but he remembers that this kid makes him happy.

When my daughter was born she was the first great grandchild on my side of the family. My Popa already had quite advanced Alzheimer's at that point and didn't even remember me most days (I was the first grandchild) but he would hold her, sing to her, and tell my Nana 'I'm not sure who's baby that is but I sure do love her!'

Feelings remain after memories have gone. People with dementia know when they feel safe and when they don't, even if they don't know why. And they know when they feel love.

What's amazing about this story is they were just pets. Happened near me, the mountain rescue said it was incredible as this is what they train dogs to do but it takes them years for them to do it reliably, these two doggos just did it off their own backs. Such good bois!

This may have been on BP a few months ago. The man collapsed on a hike and one dog stayed with him and the other ran to a hiker who had just walked by them a few moments ago. The dog signaled to the other hiker to follow him back. Amazing they knew how to work together.

There are too many heartwarming things in this post and it makes my heart want to burst. She survived. The dad recognized the significance of a small detail in an already momentous event of her starting her own life. The fact it made it to the nurse without a hashtag or @xxx when its obvious they have no twitter connection. Charlie's saving of one little girl is now used to teach others. They named a kid after their true hero. The hero finding out 17 years later. Maggie grew up in a camper van. It just keeps giving.

When I was in a hospital for surgery on one of my hands, a 2nd cousin was my nurse! My roommate was an old man, George, who just had double cataract surgery. He told Annie (nurse) that he always had a shot of scotch before he went to bed and he couldn't sleep in the hospital because he wasn't allowed his scotch. Annie told him she'd see what she could do. After talking with his doctor, Annie reported to George that since he hasn't been asking for any pain meds at all, his doctor said he could have one shot each night. Goerge told Annie "you're my angel," and told me I had the best cousin one could ask for. I think the other 3 dozen+ cousins would have something to say about that. lol! Nurses are the best!

It's a shame that no one talks about young people with dentures. Young people are so afraid of it and feel so lonely in this that they hide dental problems instead of treating it. We need to normalise the use of dentures!

Put a dab of honey on something outdoors and watch the bees work close-up (they 'recycle' honey from damaged hives as natural behavior). They won't pay you any attention at all.

We'd be better off getting rid of lawns all together. Imagine how many more flowers would be there if we didn't want to maintain a monoculture of plants we cut as short as possible so we don't have to look at them. What if the water used on them was used for a vegetable garden or a whole bunch of petunias, or maybe just some pretty rocks? Transfer all of those 10x20 front yards to an empty plot converted to a park on every block that kids can walk 2 minutes and its big enough to really play.

Erm, gardens and public areas do need at least trimming. We would have just shrubs, bushes, gnarly weeds. I'm all for natural gardening, but biodiversity is a good thing too.

I ask the man who mows my grass to leave the large patch of bluets and wild violets until they die in the spring. They are so beautiful and the bees like them, too.

Though I agree, it may not have been completely intentional. Lots of people don't consider toxicity when they try to exterminate mice and rats. The predator (cat, fox, eagle) that eats that poisoned mouse is the next to die.

Standing frames are so important for many people with disabilities for so many reasons, including muscle tone and the feeling of being at a similar height to those around them to participate in social and specialised situations. My brothers loved spending time in their standing frames when their health allowed for it (though admittedly they were much cruder and earlier versions).

Reminds me of my neighbor. We moved to a new house, the yard is lower than all the surrounding yards and sounds echo. My sons love playing outside, but they could get loud. I would go out and ask them to please mind the neighbors. Then my neighbor comes around and tells me she has a noise complaint. There are these kids playing and having fun, but some woman keeps telling them to tone it down... Could she please just let the kids play.

I had to look this one up. Apparently, "Schools are eligible to use [federal] Title I funds to operate school-wide programs that serve all children in the school if at least 40% of the student population comes from low-income families)

    Two_rolling_black_eyes
    Community Member
4 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

This is in response to the way most of the US funds their schools. We do it with local property taxes. A school in a poor neighborhood continues to get worse because it has less money to spend on everything versus a neighborhood with $1 million homes. The Title 1 money are grants from the Federal government to help those schools that need the most help and allows more latitude in how the money is spent to meet their goals. A $5 meal 1)a well fed/clothed child learns better - need nutrients and warmth for those brain cells to work and 2)has a bigger impact because mom is helping junior with homework instead of a 2 hour bus-ride to pick up a box of Mac and Cheese for 1 day because that's what she can afford. The biggest difference between the poor and non-poor is time.

Finally Able To Start Walking Again

Finally Able To Start Walking Again

Active duty military. I was taking part in an airborne operation when I had a horrible night landing.
Simultaneously damaged both shoulders (labrum, rotator, and biceps), and both hips (labrum, femur heads). I have been suffering from constant chronic pain and have been having a harder and harder time walking.
I’ve spent the last five years on the surgeons table. The hips continued to get worse no matter what we tried, and I’ve been unable to walk more than a block due to the pain.
I finally gave in and agreed to a hip replacement. Surgery was on Monday. Here I am two days later. On day 6 I did a block and a half for the first time in a very long time.
The other hip will be replaced in February. I woke up today without the chronic pain for the first time in five years. I cried because I had forgotten what it felt like not to be in pain.
My wife has never let me give up. And here I am smiling for the first time in a long time.
There is hope. Hang in there!

If you are in severe joint pain, talk to your doctor about replacement. They've gotten ridiculously better in the last couple years. His story of walking 2 days later is not unique. There are already knees with a 30 year warranty. A new one out there has a 75 year warranty, is wifi compatible for adjustments (wrong amount of bounce vs other leg), and is powered by you actually walking. The same technology that allows your cell-phone screen to register your finger can create power from being compressed by a step. Best part - knee can't hurt because its not there to tell the body anything is wrong and the rest of the leg says life is groovy.

Looks like my friends situation. She had long haired black cats coming around. She calls them the Munch Clan. She adopted them and set up a Catbana attached to her house so they can go outside as they please but are safe from predators. She has just recently gotten them to the point where they curl up on her lap.

I pay every month to the principle. My mortgage company recently surprised me. After I'd made five full years of on time payments, they took $5000 off my principle. Needless to say, I was shocked, as my mortgage company is Wells Fargo.

They got busted for overcharging versus the actual mortgage. They were charging .1-1.5% more interest than what the mortgage document was supposed to be. Most people won't/can't do the complicated math of loan payments so they trusted Wells Fargo that the payment amount was right. They were ordered to put the overpayments towards the principle since any overpayment by the lendee is supposed to go there to lower the overall amount owed. KPMG discovered the "mistake" when they were doing a follow-up audit from the 2018 acquisition of Wachovia.

Birds can become 'stunned' after flying into something. It's probably not unlike a concussion. After it recovered for a while it was able to fly away. This happens to mourning doves at my house now and then.

With experience, suicide attempts are calls for help. Identify what it is you're unhappy about that you think is insoluble and get a reality check from someone else. Most depressed people tell themselves things that arent true, e.g. no one will ever love me, I am a failure, etc etc. It's all lies. Check the facts with someone else.

Cats know how to ... sees broken humans going in there ... has broken kitten ... the human-repairshop might be able to adapt to a slightly different model ... as long as they don't mix up the spare parts and thinks like hydraulic fluid, they should be able to repair this machine, too ... just like those they do on the regular, ... after all, a cat's body works pretty similar to a human's.

The sad thing is she's probably watched almost all of her kids pass away. If she had her first one at 18, they'd be 96 now. At the oldest person alive, she's definitely lost every friend or lover. You can see the sadness in her eyes as her family is celebrating something she seems to regret.

I can't disagree. My great-grandmother used to say that she would need to have a talk with St Peter because he forgot her... She lived another 30 some years after her husband passed, which allowed her to meet us and even her great-great-grandaugther, but she always said she wished nothing more than to go peacefully in her sleep. She passed at 96. She was quite active until she had hip fractures, but still, she seemed to say she'd had enough.

I love doing little things like this! I work at Michael's crafts in Arizona, and I love to help out art students, and teachers, and stuff like that! On my last shift I paid for a panicked mother's pile of gifts for her 5 year old after every card she had got declined. Little acts of kindness are the best way to have a good day, and it can help uplift the world! ❤

I'm always a bit mixed about so-called problem-children being trained in martial arts and similar ... first, "problem children" are often not that problematic, but just fed up at an early age, because the BS won't wait until you can take it, but start right away. Second, if they truly have anger issues, are violent, engaging in gangs and stuff ... maybe the majority gets out of this in the process of training, thinking and all that, but some won't, but just acquire new abilities to be even more powerful bullies, even worse criminals, and by being that, bring themselves into a higher level of danger by people who fight back also leveling up - eventually maybe even shooting them. I don't know, how do you prevent this? If it happens, does the good still outweigh the bad?

This really should be higher. So many adults lash out at kids who are acting out because they've never been taught better. Neither have the adults, honestly, but as adults it's our job to figure out our messes and help younger people figure theirs out sooner.

This probably started because cats were found in cribs next to babies that succumbed to SIDS. Because the parents didn't know better, they blamed the cat.

I am not worried about the cat but letting an infant sleep in a car seat can lead to their demise (from really low O2 levels). Please take that baby out and hold them or place in a flat bed without blankets.https://www.consumerreports.org/child-safety/okay-for-babies-to-sleep-in-car-seats-a1715398377/

Cats/Dogs smell your breath and see if you are healthy. Many times, dogs have saved their owners lives because of this. One in particular went to the doctors because his dog kept smelling his breath. Owner had Cancer.

As a fortunate owner of a cabin in the woods. Clear that firepit! Bare dirt may not look as good on your instagram feed, but if you want to keep your little bit of forest paradise in one peice, tend to fire safety first!

I’m curious what makes you think intermittent fasting is unhealthy? One still eats daily - hopefully with a focus on nutrient dense foods - and the digestive system gets a chance to rest and repair during the fasting time.

I'm not sure what you're looking at, but the chairs are not rigged up to anything. The cable goes up the back of the fencing jacket and down the sleeve into the sword. There's a button at the end of the sword that indicates a hit or not. The chairs are not valid targets.

I hope mom is high enough in her company now to get other women like her hired. It was unicorns like her in the 90s that cracked the door in IT that's just now starting to be opened for real. When Doom was released in 1993, they made 30 minute news specials about how it was satanism destroying kids and a real mother banned her child from playing games. She had the courage and love to know the truth.

In early/ mid 2016, my life was total chaos, and I was very sick, but by December, it had finally started falling into place. I would tell my 2021 self that I've come a long way.

She would be! She took the jump and it turned out perfectly.

If the version of me, 5 years ago, could see me, he'd be ... neither proud nor disappointed, but maybe, more than any else, surprised about a few things. Like, at first sight, he might be wondering if it is still Mika, or another cat? He'd be 23 now ... he made it to 20, but not that much further. Then, after 1.5 years without cat ... wasted time ... a friend's friend had two cats hating each other, and weren't treated that well, so ... one of them moved in with me, and is now leading a happy life.

    No, they most definitely wouldn't.

If the version of me from five years ago could see me now, he'd throw away his cigarettes and never touch another one. Five years ago at 63, I could easily walk ten miles. Today I get winded taking out the trash.
