50 Times Grandparents Were So Wholesome, They Restored People’s Faith In Humanity
About 1 billion people in the world today are grandparents. Because humans are living longer, we are spending more time in the grandparenting role compared to past generations. As a result, more and more people are embracing the silver age of wisdom and the perks that come with it.
So as a tribute to all those perfectly fluffy apple pies only grandmas know how to make, and to these seriously useful handy skills you can only thank your grandpa for, Bored Panda has compiled this joyful list of wholesome grandparents.
From grandparents meeting their newborn grandchild for the first time and crying their eyes out from happiness, to grandma knitting a rainbow sweater after her granddaughter came out as bi, this is the grandlove we all deserve in life.

Cool Grandpa
For the first time in history, there are more elderly people in the world than young children, according to the United Nations. Their figures reveal that the number of over-65s surpassed that of under-fives at the end of 2018. There are now around 705 million people over 65 on the planet, while those aged 0-4 number about 680 million.
Paradoxically, even though more people than ever are turning into grandparents, aging is still largely considered taboo in Western society. The anti-aging market is soaring with P&S Intelligence calculating its revenue will be worth $421.4 Billion by 2030. Numbers are staggering, but they reveal so much more than that. What if the fear of getting old is so widespread it has become a sort of fuel for the consumer market of our century?

After Not Seeing My Grandparents For Months, They Finally Figured Out How “To Work Facetime.” This Was My Grandpa’s Face When He Saw Me
To find out more about why our society is so obsessed with youth, and what implications it has on ourselves, Bored Panda reached out to Meg Selig, a counselor, writer and book author who recently released a book “Silver Sparks: Thoughts on Growing Older, Wiser, and Happier.”
“The fear of getting old is so common that it even has its own acronym—FOGO, the Fear of Getting Old,” Meg said and continued: “A survey of Americans by the drug company Pfizer found that 87% of people have at least one fear about getting old. (I was surprised to find that 13% of people don’t have any anxiety about getting old.) 23% of Americans worry about decline in their physical ability, 15% worry about memory loss, 12% fear running out of money, and 12% are concerned about chronic illness. Only 10% of those surveyed say they fear dying.”

However, Meg also shared some reassuring information which is that “Worldwide surveys consistently show that the stereotypes of grumpy, unhappy, or decrepit older people are false.” She also added that numerous surveys and studies reveal that in fact, older people are happier people, despite the challenges that aging brings.
“One of my goals in writing my book on healthy aging, Silver Sparks: Thoughts on Growing Older, Wiser, and Happier, was to ease fears that younger people may have about aging,” she said and added that: “For the record, I am an incredibly happy older person at age 76—happier, in fact, than I have ever been. And most older people are healthy, too. Only 1-2% of 'olders' over 65 live in nursing homes.”

The book author believes that no one of any age ought to let their age define who they are. “At the same time, I do think there are unique qualities about being older. Some of those qualities: the desire to leave a legacy; an emphasis on personal growth; the willingness to mentor and nurture the 'youngers'; the ability to appreciate the small moments of pleasure that life provides,” she explained.
“A few more words about pleasure: In Okinawa, Japan, people live longer than anywhere else in the world. They have cultivated the ability to find joy in the small things and have even given this ability a name—ikigai.” It turns out that researchers believe it is “ikigai” that accounts for the Okinawans’ longevity.

When asked how aging affects or doesn't affect our personalities, Meg said that there is one factor that can affect a person’s satisfaction with aging, their daily happiness, and their longevity. “That factor is whether a person has a purpose in life. That purpose can be a so-called 'higher purpose' like helping others, volunteering, writing, creating a work of art, or contributing to the welfare of one’s family or community.”
The purpose can also be just enjoying the moment and having fun. “A former colleague said after he retired, 'If it isn’t fun, I don’t do it.' That was his purpose. It doesn’t matter what your purpose is as long as it gives you something to look forward to when you get up in the morning,” the author explained.

Meg also said that her work purpose is sharing information on healthy aging, happiness, and habits. “I do this through my 'Changepower' blog at psychologytoday.com, my books, and social media. Thanks to this mission, my personality has changed,” she revealed and added that “I am more confident, more focused, and a better communicator than when I was younger.”
Meg concluded that “personality changes are linked with your own decisions about how you want to spend your 'bonus years' of life. There's no one right answer—just the answer that works best for you.”

Grandmas are one of the most precious and wonderful things in the world. They lived through some tough times and know their s**t. He is 95 years old, and is the sweetest, most caring person I've ever met. Though his wife has passed, and his kids and grandkids are grown, he never stops making an effort to love people. Andrew and I have gone out to dinner with him a number of times, and Earl always tells us he can be our "next door grandpa." I've never had a better neighbor. I hope to be half as giving, caring and amazing as him in my lifetime

I had the best grandparents. The last one passed away in 2004. I think I miss them more as I get older.
I lost all four of mine with a two year period. It still bothers me. I could only attend one of the four funerals and it eats away at me sometimes that I didn't say goodbye (I never talk about them even writing this comment has been very hard)
Load More Replies...No I can't handle this 😭 I'm lucky enough to still have a set of grandparents (just chatted with my oma on skype) but I haven't been able to see them in person since 2019. I just can't wait to get on a plane for 10 hours just so I can hug them again🧡.
Hug them extra tight for those of us who can't see ours any more, when you see them again ❤
Load More Replies...Wholesome and bittersweet for me. I lost my first grandparent aged 5, the next at age 9, then 19, and the last one passed when I was 35 (on the day we moved into our new house). My dad turns 71 this year - no grandchildren for him - and I hope he can still look as good as some of these amazing people.
My husband's grandparents had the opportunity to meet their first great grandson when we came to the East Coast. Granddad couldn't walk without a cane and my son was fascinated with it. Granddad would giggle every time my son (the 3yo) would take the cane and pretend to be him walking with it. When Granddad passed, some of his last words to my MIL was to give the cane to my son. We still have it.

Load More Replies...Both my sets of grandparents are no longer with us but my mum is an absolute hoot. My sister and I don't have kids and likely never will due to our ages but my mum treats my cats like they're her grandkids. I live next door to mum and due to a physical disability and Alzheimer's I am her carer. My cats follow me to her house and my mum cares for them while I'm at work. She has the stay over night when I'm working night shifts and she feeds them and lets them play in her garden. This is the woman who said she'd never look after any kids we had whilst we went to work lol
Priorities. I'd rather watch someone's cats than kids. 😜

I am so lucky that I have both of my Grandmothers still with me. In their late 90's but still going strong. They are smart, beautiful, funny and full of wisdom. I want to be just like them if I ever grow up.
I lost 3 of my grandparents before the age of 16 (I’m 42). Seeing these posts always makes me wistful about what kind of relationship I could’ve had with them as an adult. Also, Dad’s mom died when I was 5 and my parents didn’t let me go to the funeral - I will always be a bit bitter about that. I don’t feel like I got to say goodbye.
I'm 78 and just lost my sister (she was 84). I vaguely remember my grandparents, but I'm relishing my "advancing age" more tthan any other, and this is my favorite Bored Panda post. Reading all of these beautiful stories and memories made me think about how much I miss my grandparents and
This makes me want to be an old lady still madly in love, who kept the letters my lover and I wrote to each other, that our grandchildren or great-grandchildren will someday find and read
My maternal grandfather always left our house saying 'see you next time, God willing' well, one day God wasn't willing to let him see us anymore and I told my dad, 'I guess God wasn't willing anymore'. I was 8. I loved that man dearly. He took me the 5 blocks to school in his car because he would have me practice spelling. Something very important to him and myself. He was a great guy!
I miss my grandparents so much. They all went too early and there's so much I never got to ask them or do with them. Posts like this are very bittersweet!
I remember a conversation I had with my grandmother about tattoos. I was 16 and I was going to get one to celebrate my parent's divorce, my father was against tattoos so it was my middle finger. And instead of my grandmother being against getting a tattoo, she encouraged me and then laughed. Because I shouldn't get something like a boat tattooed on my ass, when I get old and wrinkled, it would sink. Very cheeky of her since I didn't even mention getting one on my behind, I was going to get one on my arm! She passed away too soon and I now have a tattoo of a small butterfly as well for her since she loved butterflies.
This makes me miss my grandparents so much but it's nice to see how great grandparents can be.
this was a beautiful article :-) its so nice to read about happy things. my favourite story has to be the boy with the eye shadow and his grandpa's reaction. i like purple too :-)
Does anyone know why some US Americans call their Grandfather Papa? Is there a story behind it or something? I am so curios about this. It is a German word for Dad. I know you have lots of German decedents and words, but this one is used so wrong and right at the same time....
My haraboji (grandpa) is a former Korean War soldier. He got captured by the North, and managed to escape prison. He hid in a ditch under a pile of leaves. When he smelled bacon, he knew it was safe, since the US was allied with the South. After that, he moved to California, met my grandma, and had my dad and his 3 sisters. I can't wait to visit them once I'm fully vaccinated!
My heart is touched by every one of these. Tears of gratitude to share these special moments with the contributors and BP.
