The tradition of honoring Father’s Day might feel as timeless as dad jokes, but it actually has a pretty heartwarming origin story. In 1909, Sonora Dodd, inspired by Mother’s Day, wanted to celebrate her dad, William Jackson Smart, who raised her and her siblings on his own. Thanks to her efforts, the first Father’s Day took place the following year in Washington State.

However, it only became a nationwide celebration in 1972, when President Richard Nixon declared the third Sunday of June a federal holiday for dads. It took Dodd 62 years of lobbying everyone from presidents to retailers to make this day happen.

For this occasion, Bored Panda got in touch with Ian Dinwiddy, founder of Inspiring Dads, which offers coaching to help fathers balance work and family life. Ian himself has two children and was a stay-at-home dad for both of them.

He told us his greatest joy as a parent comes from “creating the time, space and opportunity for [our] children to develop into great humans.” He also loves seeing the world through his kids’ eyes and appreciating their fresh perspective.

My (late) dad was as conservative as they come (Silent Gen). But he fully embraced my trans-gender son for who he is. Because he cared more about his kids and grandkids for WHO they were than what the rest of the world thought about them. And he was damn. proud. of all of us.

My dad is 76 and has helped me move every time I've lived somewhere new. He doesn't have to help - I always hire movers. But he feels like it's his job to help his daughter. :) He uses a cane to walk now so I don't think I'm going to let him actually do anything the next time I move (which will be in a few months), but I'm sure he'll still want to supervise. He's a wonderful man.

“We get life very wrong when we only focus on big set pieces,” Ian believes. The dad coach highlights that being present and paying attention to small details, like putting away your phone, makes a real difference.

For instance, Ian recalls one of his kids' favorite memories when they were around 6 and 3 years old. They all went to a coffee shop together, and it was raining on one side of the street but not the other. Almost a decade later, they still treasure this experience. “Special moments are all around us,” Ian insists.

Somewhere I have the last birthday card I received from my grandfather. He was 76 when he passed, and in his final years he used to use a typewriter to send us letters, always apologising because his handwriting had gone bad. This card was handwritten. I haven't seen it in years, it's back at my parents place, but I can still see it in my minds eye and it always makes me well up

Ian now perceives the world as much broader and recognizes the responsibility of nurturing his kids’ individual personalities. “You have to see your children as independent people, and you are their first and potentially most important guide,” he explains.

Oh my god, that is a really good line.

Of course, the dad coach understands the challenges fathers face, especially when adjusting to life after their child is born. A study in the UK revealed that fathers often experience stress and guilt about returning to their jobs after paternal leave, feeling torn between their responsibilities at home and work. They also worry about leaving their partners to handle the care alone.

When we bought our house 23 years ago, there was a single glow-in-the-dark star on the ceiling of the second bedroom. We don't know if it was the only one that got put up there, or if the family removed them all when preparing to sell the house and missed it, but it made us smile and is still there today.

I had to do that too when my cat started to get old. I think she was offended at first because she kept clawing her way up my comforter to get on the bed. Then she realized how much easier it was to use the stairs. :) I had her for 17 years - best cat ever!

They are quick to catch on, I feed squirrels at my house. Then a raccoon who must have been watching this , sauntered over at night and sat on her hind heels (like the squirrels) " I am a squirrel. Feed me." NOPE. Feeding raccoons gets - intense. Not recommended.

One day, a friend heard his tractor meowing. after a moment of doubt, he looked under the hood and saw a kitten between the pieces, impossible to reach. 2 hours after he started to dismantle everything and still too far away from the kitten, his wife arrived, she took a look, told her husband "don’t move, I’ll be back", came home, came back with a dish in her hand, put a piece of meat not far from the kitten that came out at once to eat it. She’s always laughing when she tells that story.

My Dad is the most intelligent man I know, and one of the sweetest, but sometimes when you're being sweet you miss details: I was 18 and commuted 30 minutes for my senior year of high school. One a snowy day my Dad stopped by to say he'd put three 50 pound bags of sand in the bed of my truck to help with traction. I gave him a big hug in thanks, and the bags, snow-covered by the end of the day, definitely helped. When the snow finally melted, weeks later, I found he had bought bags of sand-mix CONCRETE! I had three cement blocks, perfectly shaped to the contours of my truck bed. Still tease him about it 30 years later, but it was done out of love and care, so it is a friendly teasing.

Ian Dinwiddy shared a technique to help fathers improve their lives. He recommends connecting with your personal 'Be, Do, Have'—writing down everything you want to be, do, and have, and then narrowing it down to the top five priorities. “If you have a partner, get them to do the same,” he suggests. Comparing lists can help create core principles for the family unit, providing clarity of focus and direction for making decisions.

My Dad Passed Away Two Weeks Ago. I Found A Letter That He Wrote To Me

My Dad Passed Away Two Weeks Ago. I Found A Letter That He Wrote To Me

"You are more precious than diamonds, more pure than gold. I love you and am so proud that you are my daughter.
    I love you.
    P.S. It’s all I had."

He used to leave me cash when I was younger (I'm 23 now), so "It’s all I had" refers to the money he left me with the note.
I had a baby 4 months ago and had my baby shower last October. He was extremely broke and couldn’t get me anything. All I wanted was a handwritten letter from him, one written to me and one written to my baby. I felt I was in a place a couple of nights ago to be able to read it, and it was the hardest thing ever. These are the things I’ll carry with me forever.

My great grandpa held his arm out and my grandpa was standing on his palm. Then my grandpa did it with my dad, but he was sitting. I did it, but my daughter is lying down. Less daring with each generation. Also all 3 pics have the kid naked, but mine has her position so you don't see anything untoward.

I have, what I considered a cute photograph of my daughter, probably around 3 or 4. And she's drinking actual grape juice from a wine glass. Apparently it's poor parenting. Like ffs, it's juice and it's just a glass. She's not going to have an alcohol problem in life from just that.

My sister has a picture of my father holding me when I was a baby, standing beside his father and grandfather. My grandfather and great-grandfather died before my son was born, and my father died before my grandson was born, so there hasn't been a picture of four generations since I was a small child. I'm hoping I can last long enough to not break the chain. When I'm 80 he'll be 24, so I've got a chance.

Also depends on location. Around here if you let your housecat outdoors you're just feeding the coyotes, hawks, falcons or bobcats. I have zero worries that a litterbox trained cat will even be within 10 miles of my yard.

You should try a cat water fountain, cat's prefer drinking from running water so a lot will refuse to drink stagnant water that's just sitting In a bowl. You can get fountains online for very reasonable prices and will likely notice a huge difference in the amount they drink straight away.

Cat's prefer drinking running water, most will not drink from bowls unless they have no other choice. If you want your cat to drink more water then you should invest in a cat water fountain, you'll never have to worry about them drinking enough again. I got one for my cat and the difference is amazing, I've recommended them to loads of people and it always works out great. They come in a variety of sizes and prices and include filters to keep the water clean, you can get a pretty decent one for £20-£30 on amazon.

Thick, triple-corrugated cardboard might as well be plywood, given how strong it is. I installed one of those battery-operated PIR motion-activated lights inside, so she has interior lighting when she crawls inside. It's her favorite place to hang out, and it costs a whopping $0. Bonus: It's white and colorable for her own decorative flair.

Jumped in the car after work for a 14hr drive from MI to NC. Used to be able to tough it through, but that 1/2 hr nap in WV made all the difference.

This works for me, 100% of the time. There's something about the brain and it's buddy tryptophan just needing a 10-15 minute recharge. Without it and you're dragging a*s the rest of the day. Best bang for the buck life hack of all time.

My dad will do this. He'll announce a nap, choose a room, lay on the floor, and 15 minutes later he's back & 100% refreshed. It takes me at least 15 minutes to relax enough to try & sleep!

nearly every Christmas, a few hours after dinner, I end up lying face down in front of the fire and falling asleep. I don't intend to fall asleep. just, the cosy calls me, and I just think, oh I'll have a little lie down. hence there are countless photos of me asleep face down, covered in things everyone thinks it's funny to balance on me when I'm zonked out on food, booze and warmth.

As my husband said to me once "Do you want me to be a part of their lives? Or just a man who lives in the house? If it's the former, you need to back off and let me learn to have a relationship with them. I didn't learn to love you in one day." 30 years later and our (now adult) kids all just came to visit from different countries for father's day tomorrow. ☺️

Now he's got 2 boys and the stuff they get up to is brilliant. They've had a few Christmas number 1 songs about his favourite food, sausage rolls and all money they make goes to a food bank charity. Check them out they're hilarious.

To those wondering: Egg, as many animals laid eggs before chickens were around. To those wondering about chicken eggs versus chickens: Also eggs; the first chicken, if we're drawing an arbitrary line, was birthed from an egg laid by a nonchicken. It doesn't matter where you draw the line, at some point there will be a nonchicken laying an egg that gives birth to a chicken.

Except humans usually label eggs based on what they came from, not what they contain. Why a non-fertile egg is still a chicken egg. So a non-chicken egg gave birth to a chicken, by surprise!

Geeez Laura...don't be so damn judgey! It's very funny, especially dad's expression.

Clever! The girls have 'dolla bills' hair ties, the mom's purse, and the son's hat. The commitment to detail!

Dad Fargo. Hahahaha! I love the look on his face. 😂 and Laura, the costume was likely his idea. Either way, it's not that serious. Go touch some grass, lady.

No this isn't genius at all. Or funny. It's disturbing & disappointing to see that a man is being treated like a money machine in this day & age. Seriously, we try to move on & ahead but then pics like this just throw us as human beings back into the dark ages again.

If they find humor in it, it's great. Just because they don't necessarily a line with your opinion, please don't discredit them.

Lord of the Rings Online had a separate playpen section. When I played, I chatted with a woman who gamed. Her two sons, 2 and 4, each had a character in the playground. She said mostly they just jumped up and down and ran around the map.

For years I didn't play games until after the kids were asleep. That often meant I didn't play at all because sometimes I put myself to sleep too.

Okay, not really wholesome... It would actually be awesome seeing a dad with this toddler, letting his son "help" play a game with a dummy controller.

Maybe the toddler gets bored and starts pulling cords.
