i remenber i once looked at the richest self made billionaires. the richest I found was Larry Ellison ( 88.4 billion dollars) who founded oracle. he supposedly was born to an unwed mother who gave him up for adoption. his adoptive father became broke in the Great Depression. Larry had to drop out of college after his mother died. in other words, Ellison grew up in a working-class Chicago family of Jewish immigrants.

Could you hold on to billions of dollars if you knew that you and the other billionaires could save millions of lives and increase the longevity of the planet and still be billionaires?

Where I live the top 10%, which starts at only $135k pay 53% of taxes while earning 33% of total income. The bottom 50% earn 20% of total income and pay 6% of taxes. Of course the low end receive multiple subsidies which are not included in their income.

Those numbers have nothing to do with what i said. You're reporting the tax rate, i stated the SHARE OF TOTAL TAX PAID, as in how much of the overall tax money collected. In 2016, the top 1% paid 560 billion =40% the next highest 9% 400 billion 28%, the bottom 90% accounted for 440 billion. While the bottom 30 something percent paid NOTHING. In 2022, the bottom 52% paid NOTHING. In 2020, collected income taxes were $1.7 trillion, of which the top 1% accounted for 42%, while the top 50% of earners accounted for 97.7% of collected taxes. Should the rich being paying a higher tax rate? ABSOLUTELY! Does that address the issue of HALF the country contributing NOTHING? A lot of people like to hold up the $22/hr that denmark McDonalds pays, without any acknowledgement of the fact that the actual take home pay comes out to $12.26, In romania, minimum wage jobs result in handing 45% of your pay over to the government. That's why they have free university, UHC and YEARS of PAID maternity.

Health care costs in the US amounted to $3.3 trillion before covid, To make every public and private university in the country "free" would require another $700 billion in funding. You want 9-36 months of maternity leave at 80% pay like most countries in the EU? Presuming a pay out of $25,000 a year, that adds another $100 billion. The government spent $4,900,000,000,000 on COVID. $1 trillion of that was from those "stimulus" checks that everyone was so grateful for. The median tax rate in the US? 13.4%. Go to any country in the EU, and you're handing over 35-58% of your income to the government. Federal income taxes collect LESS than 1.5 trillion a year, and as i said 70% of that comes from the top 10% of earners. That people like you disagree about the root cause, is the primary reason that the US doesn't have the "nice" things that the rest of the world views as standard.

Probably because the people who actually support socialized programs like this are the same ones that only support tax increases that apply to "the rich" because the average person is under the impression that "the rich" don't contribute to the tax system at all. It's the same people that think that UHC can be funded entirely by "taxing the rich" and only the rich. Despite the fact that the combined wealth of all 700 odd billionaires in the US totals less than $5 trillion, (most of which comes from stock value, and the SEC rules don't allow most of those people to just dump all their shares....because it would destroy companies, and put millions of people out of work) while yearly health care spending was around $3.3 trillion even before covid. We already have functioning models for how to achieve UHC, free university, months or years of maternity and all the other things Americans say they want. They just aren't willing to actually do anything about it.
