What’s the best way to soak up knowledge? Some may argue that this requires spending your days in the library, reading countless books on a wide range of topics. The story is actually written from Sam's perspective. He is definitely the main character in it, despite the first impression. He certainly is the most heroic, even being able to resist the pull of the Ring, which even Frodo can't. A true hero, without whom the plot would have failed several times.

When he is tempted with the Ring, Sam sees Mordor as a huge fertile garden, the garden of his dreams. But he realises that he would need slaves for it and easily dismisses it.

Surely anyone who's ever read the books would be of the same opinion. The Frodo character doesn't really do anything except act as a means to Sam's heroism.

This story was published before and I asked exactly the same question. Apparently they were in the forest and nobody knew there was a hole there. I can't remember if there was a mine, or some kind of underground b**b shelter from WWII. The teacher had been there several times and the place had been perfectly safe until the hole appeared.

One of the biggest complaints I remember my classmates making in school was that we were always forced to memorize endless facts. Rather than getting hands-on lessons with real-world applications, we were expected to remember dates, names and places without enough context to understand their significance. To this day, I can tell you that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. But can I explain what that actually means? Absolutely not.

Nowadays, however, it’s easy for adults to go months without learning anything new. Sure, you’ll read what’s going on in the news. But you might not be learning any new skills or information that’s actually useful. In this case, fun facts can be a wonderful way to get some new knowledge into your routine. They’re digestible, don’t take much time, and they can be used as wonderful conversation starters!

Learning facts may not be as engaging as learning a new skill, such as how to play an instrument or how to speak another language. But it still has benefits! According to Kaplan, we must remember that knowledge really is power. The more you know, the better your problem solving and reasoning skills will become.

Knowledge is also cumulative. So once you get that snowball of learning rolling, it’ll become even easier to pick up more information. Plus, when you have more context for the information you learn, you’ll be able to make connections more easily. For example, if you know what was going on in one part of the world during the 1850s, finding out what was happening in another country might make even more sense.

It dates from when the property was built and so applies to the vast majority of UK homes. It stems from easement right laws, which work on the assumption that if something has been done openly for 20 years and no-one objected, it’s probably reasonable and should be legally protected.

Not as cut and dry as that unfortunately. It is a right to a minimum level of light and not necessarily direct sunlight. Ie if you have direct sunlight into your kitchen or garden from 9am to 6pm there is nothing stopping a development being built that reduces that to one or two hours a day. As long as your home is not in complete shadow all day every day unfortunately you just have to suck it up

Acquiring more knowledge is also a great way to keep your brain active. Americans currently spend an average of five hours and 16 minutes on their phones every single day. And unfortunately, most of that time probably isn’t spent learning new skills and improving cognitive function. So it’s great to break the routine and make an effort to spend some time each day learning fun facts. This information will actually make you think, and it’s a much better way to spend your time than scrolling through brain rot content.

That is because the surgery had to be done in the USA. USA continues to deliver far more medical breakthroughs than any other country in the world and it's disproportionate high health care costs (especially in R&D) essentially subsidizes health care innovation and costs around the world. Also - Even if Polish or EU surgeons could have performed this surgery, EU healthcare would not have paid for it anyway since most countries that offer universal health care restrict experimental or unproven procedures (and sometimes even restrict extremely expensive d***s or procedures on old patients if they deem that the procedure would not significantly improve quality or time of life).

You do realize that when they say men, they specifically mean men who weren't slaves. Slaves, on the other hand, far from being able to take time off from work, were made to work by being literally being whipped until they died from working. So maybe we shouldn't look to ancient Egypt for worker's rights.

Several classical composers died during or shortly after their ninth symphony, including Beethoven. This led to the belief by some of the curse of the ninth, and that a composer's ninth symphony would be their last. Inside number 9 (British anthology TV show) had an episode based on the superstition..

Another tip Vox shared is capitalizing on the skills you already have. You don’t have to start from scratch just to prove to yourself that you can. If you already know how to play one instrument, it might be easier to pick up another than learning a foreign language from square one. In the same vein, if you grew up playing tennis, it might be easier to learn how to play padel than basketball. You’ll still be learning something new, but you might find the experience more enjoyable than starting at 0.

Er, well. It's honestly more of a situation like "REALLY, Maxwell? YOU picked C sharp to howl on? You KNOW that's my favorite note! How DARE you! I shall howl louder than you on a G flat note to drown out your foul THEFT of C sharp!" and then a wolf like me is off to the side thinking "Okay, if I howl on an F sharp, it's going to clash horribly with Uncle Max AND Cousin Flouncy, so I'll do that..." The Athenian democratic process of Ostracism could be used on any citizen of the city state, for up to 10 years. It was a two stage process, open to any citizen, had external oversight so tyrants couldn't aㅤbuse it (yet it was aㅤbused), required specific quorum to succeed (most sources state 6000), and had a penalty if they broke exile. None of the exiled one's possessions were taken away, they didn't lose their status or position, there is no stigma on return. It was mostly used by politicians to prevent rivalry to their seat of power, so was quite susceptible to propagandisation and corruption.

Now, if you really want to retain the information that you’ve acquired, you’re going to have to use it. Vox suggests practicing retrieval exercises, which allow you to recall and reflect on information that you’ve learned. “Sometimes we focus on getting information into our heads, like watching videos, going to lectures,” cognitive scientist Pooja Agarwal told Vox. “Where the magic happens with learning is getting information out of our heads."

If you're the sort that gets fat in the middle you're much more at risk for all kinds of illnesses. The scientists have actually suggested that a better number to monitor a person's health than the deeply flawed BMI is the roundness index (BRI) which compares persons height to their waist.

The US Air Force (probably the other branches too) has a waist measurement as part of their fitness testing. If I recall correctly, acceptable waist measurement varies with age. If one does not pass, they have a certain amount of time to show progress towards the standard. If one does not show progress, they may be forced out of the service.

I have just watched the video. Having decades of experience putting costumes, clothing, and hats onto cats, I can confirm that the two cats don't really look all that disturbed/upset/traumatized by wearing tiny boxing gloves XD The tuxedo's ears aren't even flattened. I think the tabby and white (on the left) was more disturbed that some random human kept lifting it up by its harness to "stand" on its hind legs XD

This actually makes a lot of sense, as if other animals were venomous or poisonous other animals would have formed defenses, maybe stuff that makes them NOT get poisoned, or just venom of their own, thus all of the dangerous stuff is concentrated in one area. Animals tend not to develop defenses if they don't especially need it.

    LakotaWolf (she/her)
    Community Member
2 days ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Not every case of chimerism in humans (or animals) results from an absorbed twin. Mosaicism is actually far more common in human chimerism than the form that arises from absorption of a zygote. It's likely Lydia Fairchild (the woman referenced in this post) has mosaicism, since the DNA from her skin and hair did not match the DNA of her children, but the DNA from her cervical smear did. This points to somatic mutation, not allogenic fusion.

A bit misleading. It was ONE particular beluga whale, named Noc, who lived at a marine research facility, who did this. There are no documented cases of it happening in wild belugas or in any other beluga besides Noc. Noc also wasn't really "mimicking" in the way we would consider a parrot would - it just sounded like a voice/words and wasn't actually words at all.

XD I didn't dislike it, per se, but it confused me immensely at the time and I apparently didn't "get it". I've read the book (and quite a few of Chuck Palahniuk's novels) since, and the book is a lot better. I honestly haven't seen Fight Club since I was in my 20s, so I'm not sure how I'd feel about it now in my 40s and if it would still baffle me XD

The sound was 317 decibels according to physicists who used measurements to calculate the sound wave. It was the loudest sound ever "recorded" on earth. It reverberated around the globe 7 times during 5 days, which means it was detected on sismographs all around the world multiple times. The eruption caused tens of thousands of casualties. Edit: I made a mistake in my description. Even though seismographs existed yet, the thing that was measured all over the world was the atmospheric pressure that increased dramatically, then dropped.

They had seismographs in 1883? Honest question.

From what I remember, what made the explosion so powerful was the fact that water surrounding the island had leaked into the caldera after a smaller initial explosion which created steam that built up under great pressure which when it finally burst created a powerful shockwave

Not knowing it was a volcano people probably attributed it to God and used bad information to support their dubious claims.

That statement needs to be more honest. They do that because of a society with an oppressive social structure. The honor is made up by humans and we do this to each other.

I'm honored that my children have been able to learn from my mistakes. I mean, when they see it happening and don't repeat it when they are adults. That's the best. (Smoking for instance)

I was always told it was to ease the vomit through the oesophagus and prevent that from getting hurt (as it is when you get reflux). That makes much more sense.

It's not like it's a process than somebody sat down to design though. Such slightly beneficial effects are not the 'reason' the body behaves as it does.

Your entire GI tract fills with mucus prior to evacuation. It works at the other end, too.

I've seen dogs drool like crazy just before they puke. Can't say I've notice a lot of saliva in my own mouth though. I usually have other feelings to worry about I guess.

I definitely have. You can feel your saliva glands activating. Only with involuntary puking though

Wait 30 minutes to brush, too, so you don't just scrub all the acids onto your teeth. Use mouthwash first if you want.

Leigh Whannell and James Wan. Every horror movie fan knows who they are. Whannell also played Adam in the first movie. You can also find their Saw short film on YouTube, which is what they used when they were trying to find a studio to fund it. They also wrote and directed Dead Silence and the first two Insidious movies together. They've both also done a lot of movies separately.

That movie wasn't in just one room. Not even close. Does that mean they failed? The movie Room unironically nailed it except for the very ending.
