In 1895, German physics professor Wilhelm Röntgen produced and discovered X-rays while experimenting with Lenard tubes and Crookes tubes and began studying them. In his initial report, the first paper written on X-rays, Röntgen referred to the radiation as "X", to indicate that it was an unknown type of radiation.

The name stuck, although many of his colleagues suggested calling them Röntgen rays (over his great objections). Interestingly, they are still referred to as such in many languages. In 1901, Röntgen received the first Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery.

Today, X-rays are essential in various sectors such as health care and transportation security. People even use them to detect art forgeries!

To show you just how deeply they have penetrated our lives, Bored Panda put together a list of some of the most interesting X-ray images we could find on the Internet. From an Egyptian sarcophagus to a metal arm, let's take a closer look, shall we?

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, similar to visible light. But X-rays have higher energy than light and can pass through most objects, including the body. Medical X-rays are used to generate images of tissues and structures inside the body. If X-rays traveling through the body also pass through an x-ray detector on the other side of the patient, an image will be formed that represents the “shadows” formed by the objects inside the body.

I've had viral pnumonia in 2009. I was in hospital on high volume oxygen for almost a week before they started weaning me off it, and took almost 2 months to recover. Later, all my hair fell out because I was so ill (it grew back). My lungs looked pretty much like this.

General practitioner, medical researcher, and founder of PrimeHealth Clinical Research, Iris Gorfinkel, M.D., told Bored Panda that probably the most common X-ray of all is the chest X-ray, simply because it's often done when people are coughing, especially longer than a couple of weeks. "Other common X-rays that are fairly routine are mammography (looking for breast cancer in women) and CAT scans (we'll do CAT scans of the chest, the abdomen, and that's often to look for various cancers as well)."

Yes and no. It is often done after the 51. day to count the puppies (which is dumb imo). Before is really bad, after is probably problematic in the long run. There are not enough studies, but it likely correlates with an increased risk for cancer just like in humans. But if there is a medical reason I don’t see a way around.

Even though X-rays have saved countless lives and helped in a range of important discoveries, scientists have shown concern over the health implications of getting one. "No radiation is considered particularly healthy because ionizing radiation can interfere with the way cells divide and cause normal cells to become cancerous cells," Gorfinkel explained. "But the reality of the amount of radiation with various studies is that it's actually very low, and does not tend to do that unless they are constantly repeated."

Experts estimate that 0.4 percent of cancers in the U.S. are caused by CT scans and that an average CT scan might raise the chance of fatal cancer by 1 in 2,000. However, this figure pales in comparison to the natural incidence of fatal cancer in the US of 1 in 5.

"For the most part, for the vast majority of people getting X-rays, that's not a concern," Gorfinkel said. In other words, the risks are very little compared to the benefits of medical imaging.

When I was a child, my uncle worked as a nurse at the local nut house (Stockton House, Newcastle Australia) Late 1980s. One of the patients was constantly hitting his face - so the nurses requested a dental checkup. They discovered the patient had several undescended teeth in the roof of his mouth, some pressing on important nerves. After surgery to remove all of the extra teeth, he started 'recovering', and after about 6 months, was deemed fit to enter society... which prompted the management to check all the patients. In all, somewhere about a third of the patients had undescended teeth - which were removed - and eventually all recovered enough to go home to their families. In turn, they checked all patients in the system nationwide. According to my uncle, was then made standard procedure to check dental records off all patients going into the mental health system.

To give you some context, the Earth is constantly bombarded by cosmic radiation, including X-rays. These rays are not harmless but they are unavoidable, and the radiation is at such low levels that its effects are virtually unnoticed. "There was always an ambient amount of radiation, in other words, just walking around on planet Earth, we have exposure," Gorfinkel said.

A chest X-ray is equivalent to a just few days of the amount of natural background radiation and a mammogram is three months worth. But a CAT scan of the abdomen, for example, is worth years of natural background radiation. Gorfinkel said it's important for people to realize that CAT scans, in general, are much higher in radiation than X-rays.

This is a horrible illness that is invisible until it is at this point. The pain that these patients deal with every day is heartbreaking. My childhood piano teacher had severe arthritis, and her fingers really were just that twisted - they were at about a 40 degree angle from the knuckles, which were swollen to twice their original size. She had been an accomplished pianist but now could barely play at all, and it probably hurt like hell. We didn't get along very well, but even as a stupid self-centred kid I felt really sorry for her.

This can break the toes and the toenails if done incorrectly and/or repetitively, even with the padding in the shoes.

The only reason you'd have to remove glasses is if they were specifically imaging the head/face or having an MRI.

Well, I can tell you that you can live perfectly normal after this operation. I had it when I touched 18 (50+ now). The operation took 4 hours, I've been in hospital for three weeks. Then you are put in a plaster upper body shell for 4 months, and then you get a new shell for another 4 months. You may leave the bed for 30 min a day, and every week you'll add 30 min more. After 4 months you'll be able to be up as long as you like. In effect, you'll lose 9 months, but my mandatory army service was waved, so that equals out. Now I can live normal, lift reasonable weights, play fight my son, and work. No wild contact sports, obviously, but everything else is ok. Only problem is looking backwards, cause only the lower part of the spine will turn. And no heavy lifting jobs.

Are xrays of pregnant creatures safe for the animal?

    ZooMom
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

They are! The radiation exposure is significantly lower than than one for humans. Also when these X-rays are performed the gestational age is far enough along to avoid developmental stages where radiation could damage certain systems such as the nervous systems. Lastly when it comes to pregnant animals you have to weigh the risk vs benefit. With ultrasound you can only view small sections of the uterus at a time and it makes it incredibly difficult to get an accurate count of the babies. This is crucial so during birth you can ensure all are delivered and non are retained.

I have a Spinal Cord Stimulator, have a photo like this. Though mine is in my lower left back, just above my bottom (not using a word that will be censored) For anyone that is curious, I have 16 leads, they are evenly spread through vertebrae L4, L5, S1 & S2. It is fascinating to see the device and leads. I love medical stuff, so it is cool to have a picture of the SCS in my own body. The reason why, is everything but cool though..

They would have been slightly more difficult to detect if they had been packaged in exactly the same way as the other stuff, or if they had simply been stacked as cargo. The fact that they are obviously hiding something is the dead giveaway.

Forensic x-ray techniques for examining the inside of metal objects have been around for a long time, they're also vital for inspecting for fatigue in aircraft parts. Here's an example of xrays through soild steel padlocks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66LzyOcFvTM

This is an oversimplified analogy but imagine injecting stainless steel if it was liquid at room temperature. Pure mercury is still toxic but less reactive than mercury compounds. The main challenge is removing the physical mercury before it reacts or causes a physical blockage somewhere.

Yes. And it is HEAVY. This person now has a super heavy liquid flowing alongside the blood in their veins - and really _alongside_ because it won't dissolve or mix like other substances might. I wonder if it's possible to feel the flow of the mercury... though I shudder at the thought.

Mercury salts are quite hazardous as they readily react with biology. Most exposure to metallic mercury is dangerous if untreated, and since most people don't know they've ingested some, it remains untreated until other symptoms develop. Chelation therapy binds heavy metals to EDTA to allow the liver and kidneys to remove it from the bloodstream. As a side-note, there are various 'supplements' and 'diets' claiming this function, all of them are bullshit. This process can only be performed as an inpatient at a specialized hospital.

It's kind of similar to acupuncture with needles. The needles go to certain points to "turn off" the pain. The little gold threads are supposed to do the same but long term since they stay at those points. But what was done here was just ... I have no words. There should be a few gold threads at certain points and it isn't supposed to look like someone shot the knee with buckshot. If done properly the person will have less to no pain what makes them use the knee the way it should be used (no relieving posture), strenghten the muscles etc.

Like any therapy, alternative or otherwise, it works only if done properly. From this X-Ray, yeah, they were likely treated by their aunts next door neighbor's daughter's friend who read paragraph on Pinterest or an article in Mother Earth News, and decided they knew everything they needed to know. I'm a huge believer in alternative therapies in conjunction with "modern" medicine, but this kind of thing just frustrates me. There really needs to be consequences for this

Gold is absolutely neutral inserted in some way in our body; what kind of "positive action" may have so casually distributed under the skin? I believe in traditional Chinese medicine about Acupuncture, and it's an effective help without chemicals, but this is a charlatan money steal.

My son was shot by another kid when he was 9yrs old. The bb entered his heart sac, barely missing a major artery. They kept him in urgent care unit for almost a week to see if he was going to have any complications, he didn't, so the left it in. He's 47 now & can still feel the bb moving around in there.

When my son was two years old, he fell down a couple flights of stairs and said his wrist hurt. He could open and close his hand and wasn't screaming, so we thought little of it at the time. The next morning, he would turn his hand over when washing it. We figured it was just a little sprain and took him to his regular doctor to have it looked at. The doctor agreed that it was probably a sprain, but his practice had just gotten their own x-ray unit and wanted to try it out, so kiddo got his wrist imaged. Turns out it was broken across both bones just like in this image, it just hadn't shifted apart yet. Even his doctor was very surprised to find out. It might be that this person had no idea the arm was broken until the bones shifted apart days later.

When it's mirrored like this its referred to as a 'claw.' Medically, your digits are numbered 1-5, in a situation like this, the numbering scheme doesn't work because their digit 2 is abnormal, 3, 4, and 5 are normal, despite their being an extra set of 3, 4 and 5 on the other side!

I took this X-ray. It’s on my Instagram xraysofthings. All lipsticks weigh the same. If it feels heavy, they’ve added weight to it.

Expensive lipsticks have an extra weight for balancing. One can hold a balanced stick easier, when used. So, yes expensive lipsticks are made heavier.

No, that's just the massive husk forming the avocado-like shape. The round part in the middle is the coconut itself. A lot of people only ever see that part because they hack off the husk before the coconuts are sent to the supermarket. I had no idea coconuts didn't look like that straight off the tree until I went to Queensland.

The photos are appropriately credited at the bottom left corner of the pic and the link takes you directly to your Instagram page. I think you can stop crediting yourself on every image they used of yours.

I play the alto sax (I'm not very good though) and it is hard at first but not so hard with practice.

A Friend Of Mine Asked Me To X-Ray Products To See If We Were Getting Ripped Off. So Far The Biggest Rip Off Has Been This Extinguisher

Somebody is probably going to chime in and say it’s filled only 75% for a reason, but they’re likely just a shill for big fire extinguisher

The "empty space" is the pressurized gas that propels the fire retardant!

If you get too much retardant you get no pressure to put out your fire.

They aren't "filled" they're pressurized, and they're a mix of both solid and gas. Also, you're supposed to flip them upside-down every year or so to keep that solid stuff from compacting.

Interesting that they claim only a shill for big fire extinguisher would say it is that level for a reason. I will be the one to say it is because it is under pressure. If it were not, you would not have it shoot out when you squeeze the handle.
