My favourite fact about elephants is that looking at humans triggers the same response in elephants as is triggered in humans when we look at cute animals. The next time you're having a bad day, just remember that elephants think you are adorable!

Elephants are known in the wild for their mourning procedures, including visiting graves to the day on the solar calendar the other had died (they must have a natural way of telling), etc. When Botswana had to cull a few specific herds for enviromental reasons they had to use huge teams to take out a whole heard in 2 seconds so spare any elephants the mental pain (the head ranger who had to lead the culling took his own life after it, he worked in protecting elephants for years, loved them, etc. He had to do it, but couldnt handle it)

Researchers even discovered that when a mother elephant dies, her child will revisit her bones and place their trunks where the mother's mouth was. Every year, and these are adult elephants

Knowing obscure facts isn't just fun. It's also good for our mental health. For example, experts say that playing trivia games can provide a dopamine rush much like gambling, but without the negative effects.

Even if our trivia games differ, the benefits are there. Whether we're playing Trivial Pursuit at home or attending a pub trivia night, the basic premise remains the same: we experience the thrill of providing correct answers to questions about lesser-known facts.

I understand she also paused a couple times to lend comfort to hysterical people who were slowing down the descent. By letting them pet and hug her for just a short amount of time, they were calmed enough to continue down the stairs. Roselle should be canonized, because she truly was a saint.

Not too dissimilar: Julia Roberts’ parents used to run an acting class which Martin Luther King’s children used to attend as it was one of the first integrated acting classes. When Julia was born, MLK and his wife, Coretta, paid the hospital bills when Julia was born to thank the couple.

As I sit working in the ColoRectal Surgeon's office and browsing Bored Panda, I am once more reminded EXACTLY WHY regular screening colonoscopies are vitally important. Chadwick lost his life to Colon Cancer. A young man but not the youngest I have seen fall to that horrific disease. Had it been found sooner, he might have had a better outcome and been here to share his talent much longer than he was. PLEASE know your family history and follow recommendations to get early and regular colonoscopies and other diagnostic tests. Doing so is truly the difference between life and death.

    H Edwards

It's not that easy. Not everyone can afford to get regular screening for every possible disease. Here in the UK they won't give screenings for certain things unless there is a 'good' reason to do so. I have never had a colonoscopy or in fact any other diagnostic test, and unless I am getting some kind of symptom I don't suppose I will.

A girl at a party had accused Adams and his two friends of rape. Despite a witness statement that contradicted the accuser's story, Adams and his friends were arrested and charged with sexual assault. But they were all black and accused by a white girl of rape, so no matter what they said they weren't believed. After a mistrail because the girl kept changing her story, there was a retrail. And although you legally can't be trailed twice for the same offence Adams got wrongfully convicted to 28 years in prison.

Actually, that didn’t violate the fifth amendment (double jeopardy). The purpose of that is to prevent people who got off from being convicted later for the same crime. The mistrial doesn’t count as a first trial, and a retrial was entered into in order to have closure on the accusations. People are regularly retried in order to prove their innocence, by their permission. You can’t be forced to stand trial multiple times in order to prove your guilt (you cannot be placed in double jeopardy of life, property, etc).

This is a lovely story, but it sheds light on a structural problem in the world. We only share our wealth when we see the difference. In our normal lives we would never vote for a political leader saying we should spend significantly more of the government's money on helping other countries.

nearly every military in the world have this today, Geneva accords require militaries to allow it. After ww2 with all the German soldiers saying "Just following orders", they put this into international law. All signatories to the Geneva Accords have this

Also in America, soldiers are required to refuse an illegal order. Do they? But in theory, they can say "no I will not kill that civilian sir."

As far as I know (from my time in the Bundeswehr) the rules are a bit more complicated: A soldier may refuse to obey an order if he thinks it violates human dignity. But if the order is repeated he has to obey. This covers the fact that sometimes crawling through garbage may be essential for completing yout mission even if it hurts your personal dignity. But if an order is violating the law a german soldier is required to disobey.

It's even a bit more complicated than that; a German soldier is not only allowed to disobey orders, he is obligated to disobey any order that violate human dignity. It's a result from ww2, where many soldiers said they were just following orders. This has held up many times in civil court (Germany has no military court). Altho you can't if it just hurts your personal dignity like crawling through garbage to complete a mission, because that's another matter.

Laws do not matter when they're not enforced. Technically even the American military is supposed to refuse unlawful orders but they don't. Millions of innocent Iraqis, Afghans, Libyans and others are evidence of that but just like the Germans supported Nazism and their military committing war crimes, the Americans do as well albeit under the pretext of human rights.

The Grundgesetz, the German constitution, even grants every citizen the right to disobey anyone who attempts to overthrow the constitutional order: "Against anyone who undertakes to abolish this order, all Germans have the right to resistance, if another remedy is not possible"

In fact, they are not only allowed but *obliged* to disobey if their obedience would mean committing a crime. The dignity of man is enshrined as inviolable by §1 of the German constitution. Thus anything that would violate it is a crime according to German law.

Hi! Dutchie here! This seems like a fairytale and all, and is partly true.. but the true reason is that the judge usually gives the criminals community service or closed treatment instead of jail time. Some Dutch people think this is too low a punishment, some promote this treatment. Also, life sentence is usually about 25 years, or shorter for good behavior. Just thought you should know!

    roepi

Bullshit. A life sentence in the Netherlands means you stay locked up untill you die unless you get a pardon by the king (through the minister of justice but the king has every right to refuse this even if the minister of justice is in favour of the pardon). Not many life sentences have ended in a pardon. The next longest sentence is 30 years imprisonment and that one rarely makes the full term as early parole at 2/3 of served time is standard procedure unless a prisoner realy f***s up. Such long sentences are rare though but so are crimes that warrant them.

Especially when IQ isn't necessarily a link to being smart. It doesn't measure practical intelligence, creativity, curiosity, or anything else. IQ is a measure of HOW you use your intelligence to solve problems and answer questions, so it's really not always a good measure of how much intelligence one may actually have.

I visited some of these underground cities and they are impressive. They were used when the mongol hordes raided the above city and kept them safe. Ventilation was taken care of, as well as security with self sealing rock doors that could only be opened from inside at the main entrances for each floor. Each floor could be closed off independently. They also has churches, food & water stores for a long period of time.

Desperately trying to keep her boys well grounded in real life, and avoid having them turn into snotty elitist little shits like some others in the aristocracy. I think it helped a lot, since the two of them seem to have a much better understanding of the lives of non-aristocrats than their elders. Especially Harry.

According to Stokes, learning large bodies of knowledge can often start with trivia. And people who are interested in trivia can be brainy, have a high IQ, and be smart on a lot of levels.

However, Kounios said that people aren’t necessarily better at trivia games just because they’re more educated.

"Some people soak up facts,” Kounios added. "Plenty of people with a lot more education may not remember what they had for breakfast yesterday morning."

"In typical people, my observation, not backed up by any research, is that their interest in trivia is confined to topics that they are generally interested in. So if a person is very interested in history, then they may either seek out history trivia, or they might just naturally pick it up in the course of learning about nontrivial aspects of history."

He did this because he was insecure about his song wiriting abilities and constantly compared himself to Kurt Cobain. He wanted the record label's honest opinion of his work without the notoriety of being "the drummer from Nirvana" being attached to the work.

He had lost his friend to drugs and didn't think he would ever play music professionally again. The fact that he was able to do this as a young adult while still grieving for a friend is what is amazing about the first albulm of Foo Fighters)

Not exactly, the thickness and materials of the filament were very expensive at the time (Adjusted for inflation would be paying $50 for a bulb), further the gave off very little light and wasnt practical. The cheaper brighter filaments were better for both economy purchasing as well as light. This was an expensive novelty item that wasnt practical. The only people who think what the description says are those who dont actually know anything about or understand how manufacturing works

Of course, it's completely understandable if the pandemic has drained your brain of the desire to learn and flooded it with boredom and tiredness instead. In an earlier Bored Panda interview, Lenore Skenazy, the president of Let Grow and the founder of the Free-Range-Kids movement, said that before we can become curious again, we have to do the hard part: get off the couch. Force yourself out the door. Why? Because beyond your four walls, things are never exactly the same. Weather, animals, people, sounds, smells, clouds—they’re all swirling about."

Not true unfortunately. Their wandering as you would imagine is far from aimless. Like any wild animal they do get themselves in some strange places, but generally boys find themselves a home range (which can cover several kilometres sometimes) and "patrol" for partners and to keep away rivals. Girls tend to either stick around close (enough) by to chosen mates (perhaps males they have mated with before) or they stay the hell away from boys as best they can. No such thing as love and romance for koalas, sex is loud, often aggressive and without pleasure.

Lenore continued: "Ask yourself to start noticing new things. I did that this morning with a friend. We took a walk around our neighborhood and started looking for interesting details in the homes and buildings we passed. It went from a walk down streets we’d seen a million times to a sort of treasure hunt. And the big thing we were really hunting for? Curiosity! When you’re curious you’re alive again—noticing, thinking, making connections. You can’t do that if there’s no new information coming in. So your first step is to force yourself out of a rut by leaving the house (harder during the pandemic, but not impossible)."

It's so atrocious in a war, it might just be better to be killed than live on. Back then (WWI, WWII) , they didn't talk about it. Now, with media, we know how truly awful it is on those who have survived. And not just the soldiers but also on the inhabitants.

It's funny how many ancient roadways, buildings, bridges still exist today but the way we build things now and pave our roads its lucky to last a few years. In 1700 years nearly nothing we built will survive. And it surely won't look like this road.

Correct. Some parts were covered with tarmac, and are open for all traffic. Especially the part from the (medieval) Porta San Stefano to the Catacombs of St Callisto are full of cars, mopeds and Tourist Coaches. The tarmac is so worn out that the original 2000+ years old paving stones are again exposed. It makes for a very bumpy ride. About a thousand feet outside the gate is the first "milestone" marking the distance of exactly one Roman mile.

Prostituition is not illegal in the Netherlands and prostitutes are (mostly) self-employed business owners. Handicapped people have/can apply for a gouvernemental budget from which they pay all the care they need. A visit from a legal sex worker is just one of the approved things they may spend it on.

Was just about to comment the same thing when I saw your post. That woman is about to get some frantic phone calls from her parents if not. Though to be fair, even if I was one myself, pretty sure I wouldn't necessarily want the whole world knowing. Not trying to shame people who do, or act like I'm better than them, just know how much stigma is attached to it, possibly leading to a lot of harassment, scorn.

When I was a nurse I worked in a ventilator dependent ward which had permanent residents living there due to the high specialist care they needed. We had one young guy there early 20's with muscular dystrophy and his parents would have a "sex therapist" visit once a month. Since the sleep study area was not in use on the weekends I used to make it up nice for them with flowers and soft lighting ( couldn't use candles as it would have likely blown the place up) he was always in a positive mood after those visits which was good for a guy knew he wouldn't make it past his mid 20's

It's exploitation and studies have shown that there are high levels of mental health issues for sex workers having to do this type of work. Also prostitutes are often victims of child abuse and therefore see their bodies as a objects to be used and abused.

Or we have completely different demographics which includes gangs that force prostitution. It’s a very dangerous profession here and promotes human trafficking. But I’m sure you just wanted to make a hateful one-off comment and not be an informed individual.

I once had a discussion with a a friend who runs an adult care centre and he was all for this. He reckoned it would vastly improve the lives and outlook of his residents. But he knew he could never get it past the trustees. To find out there is a country where it is accepted gives me hope we may one day break off the shackles of prudishness and accept that sex is part of being human.

I have mixed feelings about this. I don‘t mind them doing that per se and I find it great that they’re so open about this topic, but it sort of implies that handicapped people can‘t find a person to love them. I acknowledge some people are that shallow, but among the (admittedly few) disabled people I know, all of them have a loving partner. Plus, what about other people prone to depression? Jobless or homeless people are the first ones coming to my mind, or widows and widowers.

It doesn't imply they can't find anyone to love them. It implies that it's a lot more difficult for them to find someone to simply sleep with them.

Rapists don't rape everyone they meet and who in their right mind, even prior to the paedophile panic thing Jackson helped spark lets their kids sleep naked with a stranger? I don't mean kids climbing into bed with you for cuddles or sleep or normal s**t or just casual social nudity. I mean...we are going to bed, wee Johnny ( never janey ) is going to spend the night naked with 35 year old man behind a locked door at the end of a corridor with alarms and security cameras covering the approach to the room. When the creepy guy at the end of my road offered sweets and invited kids into the house, we were clued up enough to give it a miss without the warnings offered by our parents. C'mon now...

As an Italian (but this is my personal belief, everyone is entitled to it's own) this is exactly something Mafia would do. It's something I know occurs in Italy on a daily basis. You see a quite common modus operandi is mobster would do something nice for the community or for specific people, so that the community in the area feels dependable. One well known method of recruiting in the mafia is: you have a problem, we send to you someone you know (and you don't know he works for us). Maybe a friend of a friend. He'll fix your problem for you. After time is passed this person asks for a little innocent thing like let's say "I'm sick can you bring this box to this adress? I can't move". After that he asks for more pressuring you on the favor he did awhile back and tells you that box you delivered was full of drugs/handguns so you're an accomplice. And that's it you're in a system you can't escape without hurting family and friends.

    QuokkaVibes

Another well known trick is that they do good things, like in this photo, for the community. Little things like (this is something it was said in the past "We slept without locking the doors of the house because there was 0 criminal activity in our town") protecting towns, organizing parties for all to come and enjoy, or helping family in need bringing them food. That is because people would be less inclined to talk to authorities about fishy things that went down. Keep in mind authorities in some areas are seen as the problem, as the one who can't keep you safe so you have to rely on someone else. So yeah this is not a WTF MOMENT, more like a THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE MOMENT

In The Netherlands there was a similar kind of things, many years ago, before cell phones were a common thing. A pager is called "pieper". Potatoes are also often called "piepers". A guy ran an ad in the paper, selling "piepers" for 25 bucks a piece (I think that would have been similar to 25 usd at the time). A steal for anyone expecting a pager lol. Some people tried to sue him, but he did send out the potatoes, so they got exactly what was advertised

I count six, possibly seven where the picture cuts off on the right. If they all offered their own hit man half of what they received, it would’ve gone from $282000.00 to $141000.00 to $70500.00 to $35250.00 to $17625.00 to $8812.50 if only six, and to $4406.25 if seven. Imagine how pissed off the last guy was when he heard what everyone else was going to keep, while he would be the one to actually commit murder. For $8812.50 or $4406.25, as opposed to the original guy keeping $141000.00.

Following the discovery of Kato's body, two of his relatives were arrested in August 2010, and subsequently charged with fraud.[10] Prosecutors alleged that Michiko Kato, 81, Kato's daughter, and Tokimi Kato, 53, his granddaughter, fraudulently received about ¥9,500,000 ($117,939; £72,030) of pension money.[4][6] In addition, after Kato's wife died in 2004 at the age of 101, ¥9,450,000 ($117,318; £71,651) from a survivor's mutual pension was deposited into Kato's bank account between October 2004 and June 2010. Approximately ¥6,050,000 ($75,108; £45,872) was withdrawn before his body was discovered. Kato was likely paid a senior welfare benefit from the time he turned 70, which the family may also have used to their advantage.[5] Investigators said that the pair defrauded the Japan Mutual Aid Association of Public School Teachers, who transferred the money into Kato's account.[7] In November 2010, the Tokyo District Court sentenced Tokimi Kato to a 2½ year sentence for fraud, suspended

She speaks five languages but this post focuses on how well she's aging. Seriously? It's only short of saying "good girl"! FFS! And before someone says "she posed for the photo", yes, she did. So what? She didn't choose to use it for this post.

Marley was also shot that night when masked gunmen came into his home. One bullet grazed his chest and another went into his forearm. He still performed on stage 2 days later in an attempt to quell rising political tensions in Jamaica with his message of peace, love and unity. The man was a legend

This pic is looking from Harlem at the north of the park (The bottom of the pic) towards midtown, as you can see Roosevelt Island on the left, and the reason why so many tall buildings because of Midtown and the luxury Apts buildings on the West Side and Upper East. As far as i know there are kids living in vatican city. For example if the dad us a swiss guard. Additionally it is not like they are confined to the vatican. That said, every case of pederasty should be examined by a neutral party and sanctioned accordingly. "The church" as a whole is not neutral but has a interest in not recognizing child abuse in their own sphere.

Start their dependence early and look at their rate of alcoholism and alcohol related deaths. This may be funny ha ha for a quick factoid and make you wish you lived there when you were 16, but alcoholism is an absolute waking nightmare for everyone involved.

She's mentioned mostly in three Meccan Surahas (earlier chapters in the Qu'ran) and four Medinan Surahs (later chapters in the Qu'ran). The 19th Surah is Maryam, named after her. So a chapter of the Qu'ran rather than a book. Isa is a very important person in the Qu'ran, and is considered the penultimate Prophet and al-Massih - his role differs in that he is not considered the Son of God, nor did he get crucified in Islam. Mary, by being the pure virgin mother of Isa blessed to her by Allah, is considered as the greatest of all women.

It is unknown which of the four Marys it's about, and it not considered a gospel because it is not focused on Jesus - a gospel has be. It was written in the 5th century AD, after the early canon of the Bible was developed, so couldn't have been included if it didn't yet exist. It is believed to be a Gnostic text, who were the first group classed as heretics.

Actually, he wasn't. According to the Bible, Jesus was born during the census. No ruler would ever hold a census and demand their people travel during the coldest time of the year -- at least no ruler who prefers their citizens living. I'm not even particularly religious. Everyone I know who is familiar with the Bible though doesn't actually believe Jesus was born in December.

Many holidays, like Christmas, were stolen or copied from other religious groups in an effort to get people to convert to Christianity. The show "Adam Ruins Everything" does a great explanation.

Rumour has it that He was born in the summer but the celebrations did not catch on and so the church moved the celebrations to coincide with the far more popular Pagan festivities in December.

I love how people are like, 'oh no, these are not dildos, they're fertility symbols...' How do you know? What is the evidence? You gotta figure, at some point in human evolution, a prehistoric woman discovered the joy of masturbation with a dildo-like object. This probably happened more than once, independently, like agriculture. I know male chimpanzees masturbate and I'm pretty sure female ones do as well. So, humans are clever inventive animals, and women are just as clever and inventive as men, so why not? Why couldn't some clever "cavewoman" have invented the dildo?

Hence why female anacondas are bigger than males. Though I wonder if they run into the problem of the smaller males being too intimidated to mate with the larger females. It's been observed in Lobster populations.

My people, we're Chechens, will never be able to really get over this trauma. And when we finally could return from deportation after almost 30 years, all our possessions were taken by the Russians. And they still continue to murder and torture anyone who opposes them, 2 more wars are the sad proof. They have taken our culture, our heritage, our land, they've indoctrinated many and still, it's not enough for them. I hope the world will be a better place for the future generations.

If flying cars are ever to be a reality they have to autonomus (to get rid of unskilled operators and the problems they cause). Luckily it is much easier to make a plane fly itself (has practically been done for years) than it is to make a car drive itself. This is due to far less obstacles in the air, leading to a much simpler enviroment making the programming simpler. E.i. there are no pedestrians who suddenly walks in front of you, no roadsigns to be read, and you can always add an extra lane for overtaking since there is way more room in three dimensions than there is in two.

I won't ever feel safe in a place with flying cars. If there's traffic, it's hard to stay aloft, which means your gonna fly downward, hitting something

This would be an amazing option for police, ambulance, firetrucks etc, to be able to get to the place needed, no traffic, no delay on getting someone to hospital, getting to a crime etc, far less money I would hope than a helicopter etc.

Hmmm. In 1990, a kilogram of cocaine had a street value of $67k, and he supposedly imported 70-80tons per month. If 50% of the money stayed with middlemen, and each bundle of 100 $100 bills received a rubber band, based on a price of 31250pcs/$110 today adjusted to 1990 dollars ($0.001749/ea), that only comes to $468.76/month on rubber bands, unless he was buying them from his local office supplies store instead of in bulk.

To everyone arguing the price he spent on rubber bands, can we all agree that any amount EVERY month is too much? It's RUBBER BANDS!!! Who the hell buys rubber bands every month (and I'm not talking about business owners) lol so even if it were say, 100 a month on rubber bands, this tells me you have wayyyy too much money lol

The wealthy man wondered how he could thank the farmer for saving his sons life, and the farmer asked for help to pay for his sons education. The farmers son was Alexander Flemming, the father of the Penicillin

The average American does not make 60,000 USD. More like 52,000 USD. And this is misleading because of how people like Jeff Bezos skew it higher. Better to go by the average median wage, which is like 35,000 USD a year.

the value of Amazon as a corporation divided by the perctage he owns rises by that. That is increase in net worth, but not earnings in any way as the only way he can convert that to cash would take 5 years and 6 federal agency approvals. There is a different between earnings and increase is value of assets

For those that want to know... Lisa was a BBW porn actress who wanted to smash the record. There was a large group of men, some fluffers, an obscene amount of condoms & lube, and an official referee. The fluffers were to bring the men to the point of finishing, they would then quickly enter Lisa and a few thrusts later, withdraw. The men were cycled through as quickly as possible. The whole thing was captured on video and was later released as a documentary.
