Their posts, covering everything from natural phenomena to famous people, animal behavior and so much more, ensure that there’s a little bit of everything for everybody.
Sharing interesting information is what encouraged the founder of the page to start it. They told Bored Panda: “I love reading facts and interesting stories about people or things and I like to share these facts or stories with others. So for fun, I started this page, and now over 5m people follow us on Facebook and other social media sites.”

Us Swedes pay for it with taxes. I absolutely LOVE paying taxes. No joke. It’s like the ultimate, most unbelievable super-bargain in the whole history of bargains. It’s like finding a signed and forgotten Rembrandt in the attic. It makes EVERYTHING available, to EVERYONE - school, childcare, healthcare, mental healthcare, organizational support, roads, trains, eldercare, school lunches… the list goes on and on an on and on. Also you can rest easy in the knowledge that if someone can’t fend for themselves, you’re helping to pay for what they need. Taxes are AWESOME. So taxes is a good way of paying for healthcare and education - since it works fine here I guess that would be my first suggestion.

The hospital called her and told her to get there because he didn't have much longer. I picked her up at the airport and took her to the hospital. When we got there, there was an older gentleman holding her son's hand and reading to him. He had been there for a few hours and was ready to stay until the end if his mom couldn't make it. Luckily she did make it to say goodbye and donated his organs. That gentleman stayed with mom all the way through the honor walk through the hospital It was so sad and so brave.

I've thought of various volunteer work but programs like meals on wheels seem to be some special club that requires more than wanting to help out in some way. Yes, I'll check VA and such. Thanks for this post. I'm excellent at reading out loud. Maybe that would be a comfort.

“We like to share mostly fun facts because they bring smiles to the reader,” the founder pointed out. However, they said that there’s other types of “useful and useless info” on their page as well. And indeed, some random facts might seem more useful when it comes to the day to day; however, that doesn’t make the rest of them any less interesting.
The creator believes that such information can benefit followers in numerous ways, as you never know when it might come in handy in real life. “These are also conversation starters between people,” they added.

Ohhhh, there are a few politicians here in the US that would be perfect for this process.
I would like the entire republican party recognized as one individual group of people. Also, this should apply to Supreme Court Judges, too. Apparently, they can't be trusted to be impartial, fair and ethical. They, unlike every other judge int he country, do not have a code of conduct they need to abide by. That's why Thomas could accept the bribes he did for so many years. It's not right.

You might be wondering, what drives our interest in such random facts? Or in seeking new information in general? The answers lie in the way our brain is wired.
Brain World Magazine pointed out that it’s the novelty of it all that makes us happy. Research on brain health and longevity revealed that facing new things, be it experiences, skills, knowledge, or anything else, is followed by a rush of dopamine—a chemical that’s known for making you feel good.
He delivered such an amazing performance, it's wonderful to know it was on so many levels ❤
He did fantastic in that! (All of his movies were great!) Its so sad tho that now he has no voice :( he is one of the best actors i had the honor of watching as i grew up <3
First time I watched that movie it left me feeling high without taking anything what so ever.
They could tell by looking at him, but they were confused once Val was singing behind closed doors.
Top film/movie and top actor. He played Jim to perfection. I went to Jim's grave way back in the early 90's and it wasn't like the film and the gendarmes were all around it. We were backpacking around Europe and had no money plus no smartphones then but i was there. But we did have wine. !!!! Break on thru.x
It didn't happen quite like that. Danny Boyle, who directed the opening ceremony had the idea about featuring Bond, and he pitched it to the organising committee. Lord Sebastian Coe, former athlete and Olympic champion, was a member of the committee, and he was asked to find out whether the queen would be interested. He is a friend of Princess Anne (she's also former Olympic athlete and on the IOC) and she asked what helicopter they planned to use, because her mother knew all about helicopters. Initially, when they went to film the Palace scenes, they were going to use an actress and needed Angela Kelly, the queen's wardrobe dresser, to give them access to the outfit the queen would be wearing. It was at this point the queen asked if she could be in it, and then she demanded a line to speak. Her only condition was that none of her family was told beforehand. They knew about the filming at Buckingham palace but they all assumed it was going to be an actress.
You can just see her suppressing a smile as she says that.

And it wasn't a train in service that derailed, it ran on a test track that day
It's more the case that Japan is equipped with a network of earthquake sensing equipment, which use the earthquake's P-waves to estimate likely intensity of the earthquake at given locations; this information is then used to generate alerts (television, radio and mobile phones) and other purposes such as stopping trains (not just the high-speed trains).
Yes, but the system was specifically developed for the trains.

According to Brain World Magazine, humans, like most mammals, instinctively prefer novelty as long as it doesn’t pose a threat of some sort. (And unless your computer is guarded by dragons, browsing random facts online sounds like a pretty safe thing to do.)
But over time, instinct alone became not enough; as our brain developed, we started analyzing the experiences and learning from them. And since new experiences made us feel good, so did learning about them.
Therefore, whether it’s reading a book with unexpected plot twists, learning about an interesting topic at school, or familiarizing yourself with random facts—it’s all novelty to our brain, which makes us somewhat happy.

I was super sick last week, and my puppo bright all of his most favorite toys to my bedside so I would feel better. He's as handsome as he is sweet!
I have ME. On a day when I can’t get out of bed, one of my cats taps on me with a paw to check in. He cuddles in closer than usual and is much calmer. We don’t deserve animals.
So annoying when you get the companies saying how wonderfully 'environmental' they are and how 'green' they are and care about this that and the other and all the time there they are with product after product having planned obsolescence.
How is it not illegal everywhere !?! It’s not like those companies are penniless

On the other hand the only way to upgrade a recent MacBook Pro is to sell it and buy another one. Absolutely disgusting
my previous washer/dryer combo lasted 15 years. when i bought a new set this year, the salesman said they would only last 3-5 years. i googled it and he is correct. !!??
Yeah the materials they use are cheaper I think, + their guarantee is limited in time (but you can PAY if you want an extension of it) thus you find yourself with a broken machine 2 weeks past the guarantee … No need to repair it they then say, it will be cheaper to buy a new one …what a waste

If this statement ended with "... And Apple was proven guilty and it's no longer allowed to conduct business in France" I would have been impressed. But no.
This seems difficult to prove their intent. My understanding is they claim the software slows the processor based on battery integrity. As the battery starts to fail, the processor runs slower in order to extend battery life. So they're slowing the phone while extending the battery life.
It really should be the user's choice of whether he prefers a quick phone at the cost of shortening the battery life or the oposite. But Apple being Apple they always think that they know what is best for the customer, even better than he/she does. When they "saved my battery" by making my phone so slow that it said "turn right in the next crossing" AFTER I had passed the crossing when I tried to use it for navigation, my phone became pretty useless and I would have prefered if things had just stayed as they were.

The Brain World Magazine article also pointed out that the way new experiences and information stimulate the brain affects our memory as well. While the ordinary days from your past might get lost in the haze, those that presented unexpected events seem clearer on memory lane.
According to Science Daily, it takes both the familiar and the unexpected to form the most memorable events. Based on psychology professor Dr. Sederberg’s insight, they arise when something rather unpredictable happens in a familiar context.
I love rewatching Harry Potter movies and sci-fi movies
I've always done this. It really is comforting, plus you can play a game on your tablet while not missing what's going on. I can't even count the number of times I've seen Criminal Minds, GoT, Justified, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, True Blood, Dexter, Jessica Jones, IASIP, Silicon Valley, The Good Place, Outlander, Rick & Morty and a few others. I've also been watching 3-4 eps of The Simpsons every single night as I fall asleep since around '96. They're all comfort shows. I just wish I could occasionally forget I know them so well and watch them all again for the first time.
Every time I'm at someone else's house, before bed I watch Little Rascals. I don't know why but it always gives me a sense of safety.

Load More Replies...I am so serious right now. Almost all cats love getting high. I know there's going to be some of you that have cats that don't, but I worked at a vet hospital and most all cats love their post surgical or hospice meds. Dogs not so much. In an article for Psychology Today, Shahram Heshmat, an emeritus professor at the University of Illinois Springfield, emphasized that emotions play an important role here as well. He stated that emotionally charged events are remembered better than neutral ones and pointed out that “nothing focuses the mind like surprise”, coming back to the importance of novelty.
Both of these might add to the fact that we often remember a shocking thing we saw online last week better than what we had for lunch yesterday. And unsurprisingly, the internet is full of such astonishing, inspiring, heartbreaking, and in other ways emotionally charged news.

The ‘Weird Facts’ Facebook page is just a teeny tiny fraction of all the random information online. According to Statista, back in 2020, the total amount of created, captured, copied, and consumed data globally reached 64.2 zettabytes.
If you’re interested in how much a zettabyte actually is, it’s a thousand exabytes. If that’s of no help, it’s also equal to a billion terabytes, which equates to a trillion gigabytes.
No matter which way you look at it, it’s a humongous amount of data, which means you ought to find the information you’re looking for. Plus, something completely unrelated, yet likely not less interesting; maybe even shocking enough to stick in your long-term memory.
Dolphins are simultaneously some of the most wholesome and most horrifying creatures.

I've never heard of a study that didn't show positive results of a 4-day work week, but employers still don't want to do it.

Load More Replies...Justifying the office space & build-out is an excuse some companies use, which just seems ridiculous. There are some factors dependent on the type of business. For example, my hubby is a medical provider, doing clinic, lab and hospital. It’s not just the providers or allied professionals, but even the custodial, dietary, valet, and other support jobs that are needed on-site to maintain all their certifications. Particularly their trauma status. All the clerical and admin jobs that could be done from home or on na shorted workweek actually count in the staff to patient ratio as far as fire & other emergencies are concerned. With 30% of admin working from home, they no longer meet their trauma level. Which just seems weird given clerical work isn’t direct patient care. I suppose the idea is that they’d help evacuate or spring into action given an outside disaster or fire or whatever.
Employers are influenced by management concepts that focus on the observable production of an individual. "How much hay did you gather? How many reports did you generate?" And, of course employers seek to observe and measure these values through direct observation if possible. My sense is these values are far better measured through looking at the contribution to the mission. Contrary to popular belief, many or even most of the entrepreneurs at a given time are inadequately trained in management and often make abhorrent decisions. They need help.
Sanskrit also has not changed since ancient times. If you can read Sanskrit, you could read text written 2500 years ago.
Does it work the other way around though? I'd imagine there's not 2500 year old sanskrit for 'fax', 'automobile' or 'offside rule'
Load More Replies...This is partly because of there has been widespread literacy in Iceland for a long time. Reading old texts for generations has preserved familiarity with the form of the language used in them. The same things happens in English with very popular texts such as the King James Bible or Shakespeare's plays. Words and phrases that would have disappeared from the language have been retained because they are familiar to so many English speakers.
I can still read text written millions of years ago from anywhere in the world. I don't know what it says or means, but I can read it!
Scientists have gone as far as analyzing how much of the 64.2 zettabytes a person’s brain processes on the day to day. The answer is roughly 74 GB per diem; and to make matters worse, the number is believed to grow by 5% each year.

Load More Replies...Because anything proudly displayed is "art". My personal favorite was at a modern art museum in France in the 80s. Go to IKEA and buy a basic tall wooden stool. Paint it gloss black. Go to the grocery store and buy a chicken egg and paint it gloss yellow. Place the egg on top of the stool and proclaim it is "ART". Me and my friend laughed when we saw that.
If I ran this exhibit and found this pineapple I might do this too. It is also art to do something like this.
I had a Sammy when I was in college. We were walking late at night near the campus one time when someone started following me. I ran up to a house, but she tugged her leash free. The amount of data we process each day includes social media as well, which has the power to, over time, affect the structure of our brain. Houston Business Journal pointed out that it influences people’s social and emotional response, the capacity for attention and processing information, and, you guessed it right, memory. In addition to that, similarly to novelty, social media notifications also release dopamine, which makes people feel good and seek the feeling again.

Just remember that in the early 20th century, we had figured out so much over a short period of time. It was easy to assume we'd explored it all. (But frankly I think that's a dumbass thought even for that time.)
This reminds me that someone back in the early 1900s saying they should probably close the Patent Office as everything that was going to be invented already had been.

Fast forward to last year when my mom did a deep dive into our family tree and discovered that we are not related to Edith Cavell at all... My life is a lie 😭 Obviously she's someone to look up to regardless, but it was really, really sad to find that out. There IS an Edith Cavell in our family, but she's not THIS Edith Cavell ☹️

Beethoven was such an assh*le, I love him. His brother, after buying some land, was so proud of himself he made himself business cards with his name and "Landowner" printed on them. Beethoven thought it was so stupid, he had business cards made for himself that said "brainowner."
The real assholey thing he pulled was writing the a good portion of the vocal lines outside the respective voices' ranges, especially in the Missa Solemnis, and especially the Tenor solo parts in the Agnus Dei. It's a real bear to sing.

Many love stories were destroyed, kids never got a chance to grow up, people never had a chance to start a family, get a better job or improve themselves. May all victims of the war rest in peace.
The most horrifying thing is: these were not even victims of war. They were victims of a sick ideology or whatever you might want to call it. I like to think of myself as a pacifist, but then again all these people ( probably more) would still have been killed if WWII had never happened, perhaps it would have been less if it had happened earlier. I say that as a German who is horrified that there are again politicians (elected into parliament!) in this country who consider "Hitler and the Nazis [...] just a speck of bird poop in more than 1,000 years of successful German history" (Alexander Gauland, June 2018)

When you visit the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, you start at the top floor and work your way down. It becomes increasingly more dark and depressing as you descend. On either the third or the second floor (I don't remember which) there is a display with a very large bin full of used black shoes, all collected at the camps. I've been there twice, and that is the spot where I mentally have had enough. Both times my brain has said, "Enough." It is devastating to see what horrors humans can inflict on one another.
על החיים שאבדנו למעשים רעים - to the lives we have lost to evil deeds. As a person with (direct i.e grand uncle's parents )family that has been killed by the holocaust, and with a lot of knowledge about the atrocity, I have to say that it was the worst humanitarian autracity in the world before the cold war.
I know some will disagree, or try and say that "violence begets violence", but my grandparents on my non-biological dad's side lost most of their relatives to the Holocaust while both of the served in the United States Navy during WWII, so my opinion has always been "The only good Nazi, is a dead Nazi." This also applies to Neo-Nazis and anyone else who espouses support for White Supremacy, in any form.
I didn't lose anyone in the Holocaust and I feel the same way. ESPECIALLY those who try to deny it happened. I like to think there's a special place in Hell for them.

There is a guy (I don't remember his name) in Australia researching pain in the hopes of finding better ways to treat it. He is letting himself be stung/bitten etc by a number of plants and insects as part of the research. He said the tarantula hawk wasp and gympie gympie tree were the worst.

Tostones, no, the SW tarantula hawks are definitely NOT gentle. I was stung by one and couldn't move my arm for 40 minutes. The pain was intense and then my arm turned numb. They are beautiful but horrible insects. They inject their venom into a tarantula, lay their eggs in the tarantula's abdomen while the poor tarantula is still alive. The larvae then hatch and feed on the alive tarantula. Sorry, I don't think that is a docile insect.

We waste WAY too much food in this country, while millions go hungry. No excuse for this!
They have to donate the food to an organization of some kind, like a food bank. MILs church received food from a local Panera Bread for their Sunday dinners and/or parishioners in need. Usually, IF you can find a restaurant willing to donate food, a designated employee/volunteer must pick it up at a certain time (normally after closing) on certain days and they must be able to load it themselves. Even then, those that donate rarely give anything that needs constant refrigeration (like dairy) or raw meat. Raw vegetables aren't unheard of, but usually they need to be used w/in 24-48 hours or it's unused vegetables. Soup kitchens feeding large amounts of people are usually the first to get these.
To be clear: “donated” has a legal definition in this case. To non-profits or food banks and the like. NOT donated to homeless on the street or employees. There have indeed been lawsuits for restaurants leaving donated foods at homeless encampments or set out in area with high homeless foot traffic. Restaurants have lost these specific types of cases. There is no legal precedent for a restaurant being held liable for formally donating their leftover inventory. Also, what they can and cannot donate has been debated.

This story keeps popping up as true from time to time, but it stems from a satirical article from the NY Times from the 1870's.
This was also true for (British) Mars bars. If the stacker at the end of the production line needs a bathroom break, rather than bringing in a replacement or stopping the line, the bars are left to just pile onto the floor, which is kept sterile, and they are then shovelled into a hopper at the start of the line to produce the nougat layer. (May have changed in detail now, this was back in the 1980s).

I heard about a woman who hid her boyfriend in the attic of the house she shared with her husband where he lived for 7 years and even managed to move into her new attic when she moved house and her husband had no idea the whole time that his wife was cheating. Eventually the husband became abusive to his wife and the boyfriend ran out of the attic to save her. He shot her husband and they made it look like someone had broken in by locking her in a wardrobe and taking a few valuables. He was eventually caught by the police.
Ex-boyfriends sometimes come out of the attic, but many more come out of the closet.
The sentence is misleading. The ex hadn't lived in the attic for 12 years. They broke up 12 years ago, they lived their lives on their side, but he always wanted to get her back. Just after being released from prison (where he had spent several years for drug and theft related crimes), he broke in and moved into the attic, where he was discovered after 2 weeks. It's still creepy, but 2 weeks, not 12 years.
An ex-con going straight from prison to breaking into your house is fairly creepy itself.

Second, female voices activated the right anterior superior temporal gyrus (language processing/social cognition), while male voices activated the mesio-parietal precuneus (visuospatial processing) in addition to the right anterior superior temporal gyrus. Third, couldn't be associated with pitch or behaviour. Fourth, this study is nearly 20 years old and studied only 33 men, that isn't even past a margin of error. All in all, it can be summed up with the meme quote "Your sample sizes are small, your standard deviations are high, your conclusion means nothing, and you should feel bad".

meh, when I pass by a public pool with lots of chlorine in it, my eyes already start tearing up, itching...
Chlorine in water does not have an odor until it kills some bacteria. The aquatics center I swim daily at has a policy of showering before swimming and I have never smelled chlorine there.
Fun Fact: If you enter an area with a pool, and can smell chlorine, don't get in the water. Pool water should not smell of chlorine, it should smell of water. Chlorine is used to reverse some sort of incident...usually a person peeing or pooing in the pool. The stronger the smell of chlorine, the worst the incident. So, when you go to the hotel pool and the chlorine smell hits you in the face, there's something in the water you don't want to swim with.

They're eyespots. Not true eyes, but they do detect light.

Kevlar being used as insertable plates for body armour came about a year earlier, and kevlar spent the five years prior to Richard's company creating an incorporated vest being tested for use as body armour in the military and police, with kevlar plate armour already being approved for police use.

Yeah the marine developed it because of his time delivering pizzas, not his time in the marines.

Load More Replies...The astronomer was Cliff Stoll. He wrote a terrific book about it called "The Cuckoo's Egg". It's still available.
Read the book, "The Cuckoo's Egg" by Cliff Stoll. It's a good read about this.
EEEWWWWWW, omg, will Australia please stop being the home of nightmares?? I want to go and see all the cute and furry things but there are soooo many scary death things!!!
Would millipedes look and taste like a big shrimp if you cooked then ate them?
Fascinating. Kind of like how plants and water respond to positive/negative music or human interaction. Living in France, I've learned that cheese is an entity unto itself as it is composed of binômes that are affected by the environment it is cultured in. A brie de Meaux tastes different from a brie de Nangis. It is the same with sourdough bread-it tastes different across the globe because the natural airborne yeasts are different and impart a different flavor, even a few miles apart.
I've been working on a story about an assassin who has the ability to travel to parallel universes. I love learning about interesting new ways to kill people.
The ice bullets don't work. Mythbusters tried it and it shatters when shot.

That way you just needed to put them on a wheelchair and off-Board them to an ambulance. That way the rest of the passengers would just think that is is somebody who had fallen ill...Just dropping that little nugget of information.

Her name was Alice Roth. The balls were hit by Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, who was known to be able to foul off pitches he didn't like. I don't think he had a grudge against Ms. Roth.
Sounds like me with frisbees. Every single practice I get hit by at least one stray frisbee that I didn't see coming
this is a problematic claim, while there is little doubt he is strong, very few people and events will combine the totals of weightlifting & powerlifting. If few others compete in the format, then he's just technically one of the the strongest men to have lived, because the cometitive pool is just that small.
Or it's just such an impossible feat that the pool of even capable participants is that small.

Today's elevators are designed to be fail safe in the sense that if the caple breake and the pull from it therefore vanish from the cabin, brakes will automatically pop out and make it stuck in the shaft. This mechanism should prevent people from plumeting to their death should a similar situation occur today.
It would have been a huge surprise if she hadn't survived. The elevator cab reaches terminal velocity rather quickly due to the air it has to displace and/or compress (think of a clogged syringe). Any remaining speed is quickly bled off when the cab hits the birds-nest made by the counter-balance's steel cable that won to race to the bottom of the shaft, that's several stories high, cushioning the fall.

The information on how to was given to Crash Bandicoot developer Naughty Dog, because they couldn't get the cartoony effects they wanted even though the system was capable. They contacted Sony, ad a person there ended up explaining the throttle and how to bypass it. The information was shared with other game developers, ad the rest is history. There is a video about it on youtube I think.
Another source tells it differently. Obviously she had been treated for [breast] cancer so she knew, but "they knew she had cancer for some time but in the final month Paul kept the approximate time she had left to himself so Linda would not have the burden of running out of time." That paints an ever so slightly different picture.

These things gross me put. If I see that's the only option, I load up on TP before washing my hands. 🤢
What happens if you start with the electric dryer, then dry your hands the rest of the way by blotting them on your pants because the dryer is so d@@@@@ ineffective??
You might as well have a plague-infested gibbon sneeze your hands dry.
This is why there aren't any hand dryers in restaurant kitchens because they are so unhygienic

Started before that. I worked on a national talk show (USA) , and we received at least four invitations to weddings where the woman was marrying herself. This was in 1996.
I recommend "The Bridge on the River Kwai." Guinness well deserved his Oscar for that movie!
So, I lol at Nestlé because they sell all kinds of chocolate products in France (and Europe) EXCEPT their infamous chocolate chips (available only in the USA or for a murderous price via Amazon). Instead, to make Tollhouse cc cookies, I've got to use the also incredibly expensive Vahiné petites de chocolat, which are tiny, and not as tasty as Nestlé 's chocolate chips. I'm also irritated by French "brown sugar"- cassonade-which lacks the' je ne sais quoi' of American brown sugar. ( the "quoi" part being that French brown sugar is made from sugar beets and artificially flavored while American brown sugar is ultimately the by-product of rhum manufacturing, hence the "quoi"). I'm not fond of French patisserie at all. It looks pretty, but that's about it. No cinnamon, no other flavors but chocolat or fruit rouge. Even my teens ignore the cookie aisle at the supermarché because it's sablé, sablé, cheap cc cookie, chocolat coated sablé, Oreo, sablé... Recently I made oatmeal cookies and my teens thought I had invented some really awesome treat. I could only find oatmeal in the vegan section of the store.
i didn't even read what you said, but upvote for wasting your time writing so much, since no one's gonna read it.🫠

I was looking to read about the story of the woman's ex-boyfriend living in her attic for 12 years, but it was only in the headline. If you are too... It happened in South Carolina, USA. She thought she had a poltergeist. Her adult sons and nephew searched the attic and found her ex from 12 years ago asleep in the back of the attic. They found cups filled with feces and urine. He also has adjusted the vents to watch her in her bedroom. The ex ran out and escaped before the police arrived and hasn't been seen since. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/woman-finds-ex-boyfriend-living-attic-12-years-after-break-up_n_1876759
Well that just sounds awful. At that point I'd move. Find somewhere without an attic... but I bet sleeping is difficult and she's always looking over her shoulder and into her vents still.
