Time keeps marching on, and we're powerless to stop it. However, people have been doing a good job of capturing fleeting moments through photographs, allowing us to relive memorable events or experience ones we might have missed.

The Instagram account 'New Old Photos' is a great example of this. From auto mechanics in the 1920s to a Dutch open-air school in the 1950s, it shares interesting pictures that transport us to bygone eras and build a connection to the past.

Talking to Bored Panda about historical pictures, professor, writer, and amateur homesteader Joshua Wilkey said "I think photography can be an essential and powerful tool for understanding history, but I [also] think it is also necessary to view all photographs with a critical eye."

"While we might be accustomed to skepticism of photos in the age of Photoshop, photo editing isn't the only thing that should give us pause."

The historian provided a few very helpful questions we can ask ourselves when analyzing such images. The first one: is the photo lacking context? Or what is happening outside of the frame?

"There's always the chance that the viewer is seeing an intentionally skewed perspective," Wilkey highlighted. "A picture might be worth a thousand words, but sometimes it takes a thousand words to explain the context of a single photo.

As avid Bored Panda readers probably know, pictures can be very strange without context.

So many diseases that had been eradicated in the USA because of reliable vaccinations are now creeping back in. Let's hope polio isn't one of those to make a comeback. It would be great if only the ignorant were infected and these diseases were not be inflicted on innocent children.

Wish anti vaxxers could see movies from back then of real actual kids and adults with polio, during and after. Back then things couldn't be faked so it'd be real honest to god polio. (did polio cause some to be in an iron lung also or am I thinking of something else that was just as bad/deadly as polio?)

Obviously staged - the hydrant dude! Checking confirms; a pro photo shoot (another pic has the same car as above "crashed" into a lamppost). I can't find the why, though. Novelty postcards? Some kind of morality campaign? Shorts were in the news that year: an anti-shorts ordinance in Yonkers, NY was overturned after protests and multiple arrests, and women marked through the town in shorts as a kind of victory parade. All gaining lots of media attention.

The picture taken was in Toronto, Canada... the article you posted was from Los Angeles, USA. So while technically the case, the law your article talks about wouldn't apply to women in Toronto. Two different countries, two different legal systems.

Not back then. Women were required to wear long dresses/skirts either right at the kneecap and longer (aka it was the norm). Even the length of bathing suits for women were measured and had to be a maximum of x inches above the knee. Any shorter and they'd be arrested for public indecency. I'm glad times changed. Though some outfits are best suited inside the home (Kanye's wife, for one huge example).

How times and fashions change. Once very low-cut gowns went with not DARING to show an ankle or even refer to said ankle by name. Even pianos once didn't have "legs" because THAT was a naughty word. And no lady sat down in a chair just left by a man and still "warm" from his presence. Ah, the human body and sex make customs, laws, and human beings stark staring mad.

In The 1800s , Pit Bulls Were Often Called "Nanny Dogs" Because Of The Protective Behavior They Exhibit Around Children

Pitbulls are great. Even though many people believe that the dogs are hellacious fighters, however in the 19th century these little pups were believed to be the perfect babysitters because of how clingy they get when they’re around children. Not only are the dogs protective over the children in their charge, but they’re very loyal and stable if they’re raised well.

“Nanny dogs” were placed with children once they were old enough to be comfortable around dogs, which had to be great for any victorian boy or girl, who doesn’t want a dog? The two dogs in this photo look like good boys, they deserve a treat.

Problem is idiot criminals have kept breeding them to be more aggressive to use in dogfighting or to have a "macho" dog. So nowadays there are some Pitbulls that are to unstable to even train properly

You should do some research before you continue to spread uninformed opinions online. Look into what happened to the dogs that were rescued from Michael Vick and get back to us. These dogs are able to be used for fighting specifically because their inherent loyalty is abused. Those "unstable" pitbulls you are taking about are just more examples of abused and poorly raised dogs that not only have to overcome the trauma of years of abuse to have a normal life, but stigma and bigotry from folks like you. Shame on you.

The problem isn't them being aggressive it's just that if they DO bite they will cause a lot of damage. The most aggressive dog I can think of is the Chihuahua, but if they were to bite it would be relatively harmless..

Breeding does affect temperament. Not all pits are bad. But many were bred for dog fighting by irresponsible owners. Responsible breeders don't breed aggressive animals. But not everyone is responsible.

Same description talks about how sweet their are AND how protective they are. If they protect your kid that's sweet. If they do so by maiming the neighbor kid who shoved your kid and sends him to the ER - not so sweet. I don't hate pitbulls. A relative had one and it was pretty sweet. But they are very strong for their size so when one DOES attack it is difficult to hold them back. TLDR: You can't bang on about how protective a breed is and pretend it never "protects"

I have one, and you hit the nail on the head. It can be a great dog, but you also have to be realistic about the dog you have. It’s not a golden retriever, so when it plays or protects a pitbull can do a ton of damage. My girls jaw and neck are incredibly strong, and I would not want to be on her protective end. She protects my wife and kids, and my wife won’t walk her anymore because she can’t control her when she decides there’s a threat.

Calling pits of any breed nanny dogs only encourages bad owners. The ones that will say "my kids can do anything to our pit and he(she) is just fine." No dog can take everything kids dish out. Pits just have a response that can be much worse than most.

There is nothing worse about a pit bull attack, it is just like any other large dog attack. GSD and Rottweilers actually have stronger bite force than a Pit. Also, Pit Bulls absolutely CANNOT lock their jaws (another random pile of BS about Pits). Part of training a dog is also training the human. Notice how the OP said "'nanny dogs' were placed with children once they were old enough to be comfortable around dogs"

My pit/lab mix Boone, will be 6 this year, adores children! He always gets so happy when we’re out walking and a child stops to pet him. When I babysit my friend’s son, he loves to sit and watch him. Boone is the sweetest, happiest boy who has never met a stranger. It’s a shame they still get such a bad reputation due to irresponsible breeders/owners.

We were at the lake one summer and my niece (2/3yrs old) was wading in the very shallow water and my dog walked up and down that dock and wouldn't take his eyes off of her. She fell onto her bum (not deep water!) and he launched into the water to her immediately. It was amazing to watch, really. RIP Dreyfus.

The second question: is the photo representative? In other words, can the photo indicate something bigger than itself?

"For example, the internet has, for years, made fun of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un for marveling at seemingly cool but likely fake things like modern and well-stocked grocery stores," Wilkey added. "These photos are meant to be representative images portraying for Kim's people and for foreigners that North Korea is a modern and well-nourished society. [But] the reality is a bit different."

An Open Air School In 1957, Netherlands

The photograph was taken in 1957 in the Netherlands where open air schools were quite popular at the time. The idea of an al fresco classroom should be a very obvious one if the weather permits it, but unfortunately, most traditional western schools these days don’t put much emphasis on the benefits of learning outside of four walls.

When I was growing up, we did have a few classes outdoors. So refreshing and a nice break from sometimes stuffy classrooms. There weren't enough instances of teachers doing this, though.

Yeah, nice concept. No doubt. I had the pleasure to experience this in the late nineties (visiting the European equivalent of an high school). Some teachers out, out of the blue, suddenly got the brilliant idea to held there class in the school yard in late spring. It was all fun and games... well, if you wouldn't suffer from hay-fever. Those lessons were hell on earth for me and also one quater of my classmates! (Luckily, I'm one of those persons where hay-fever was only puberty related, so I have only suffered through 3-4 springs/summers).

While these concepts can apply to virtually any photograph, they become vital when we're viewing one as evidence.

"They are important for historical photographs because of the power and usefulness of photography in political propaganda."

North Korea is a great example of a regime that uses photography for propaganda, but Wilkey said that the Soviet Union and the US were well versed in the subject too, particularly during the Cold War and the Space Race.

Unfortunately, this is still true basically. At least in Arizona. When I first started teaching high school in 1968, my pay was $5499 annual. I had $10,000 in government loan debt to pay. My monthly salary was $300. From this I paid for my two bedroom unfurnished apartment and my utilities. Arizona was 47th out of the 50 states in teacher pay then. I am long since retired but teacher salary in Arizona is 49 out of 50 states now.

Weird how memories are. Except for the people - I can "feel" every item in that photo. I still own that desk. I've worked / sat in that chair, that rolodex, that flip calendar, that desk pad. Not the exact same ones of course but the same models. At some point there were 10 Gazillion of those things around. I think in large part because the military used them. For me - navy - but from photos I think other branches too. And they are built like tanks. I bought my current metal desk from Boing surplus near Seattle about 30 years ago. I also have a second one out in my shop that was left by the previous owner. Heavy - but puts those particle board desks to shame.

One of my cousins married a Haitian; they met at the university. My late aunt, her late grandmother cut off his face on all the pictures she put on her mantel. They live in Ste-Foy (Quebec, Canada). He has a doctorate in biology and could never find a job equaling his brains; no one wants to take the chance of being ostracized. It's ridiculous. We inherited my childhood home. Going thru drawers we made a funny discovery. My oldest sister dated a guy for 9 years. He told her he had a surprise for her. It was not an engagement ring, it was a rocking chair. She dumped him. My mother cut his image out of every photo my sister & he took together. In an envelope, we found all of the photograph fragments with his image on them.

Old or new - I always thought this was super petty. It also seems counterintuitive because it draws attention to whatever the rift is/was. Anyone who sees the photo instantly knows there was some serious drama involved and it is going to make the average person curious.

Race comments aside, when I see photos like this I think, "poor people trying to scrape by". This says 40s Harlem but I've personally seen it in 80s Mexico and 80s and 2000s Philippines. Except instead of Beechnut it is usually little packets of Chicklets gum. Often a little kid or an old person but sometimes not. The common denominator for my experience was areas with a lot of poverty and people doing what they can to survive.

I think this was her job and not so much as means to scrape by. Also, Harlem was not as much a ghetto as people would like to claim. There is always this stereotype about all black neighbourhoods being ghettos. I have lived in two predominately black neighbourhoods, and they were not ghettos.

A lot of commentary here from people with little actual knowledge. An excellent example of how complex the situation was "The Cotton Club" - 100% black performers- best jazz musicians in existence - white customers only, blacks not allowed. In Harlem. Crazy, and hard - and good money. But Harlem was also a refuge as well as a prison- you could be Black there, and not worry about it. Hard. Bad. Stupid. NOT over.

Why is it so hard for white people to admit racism exists. I'm white I grew up in a racist rural area. I internalized and acted racist. I'll listened and and learned from people who experienced racism and try to do better. As far as I can tell the folks that complain about the discussion about racism are pissed because they had only their skin color and the implied privilege afforded and zero skills intelligence or worth beyond that.

    Libstak

I haven't met anyone who denies racism exists. What is going on is that not every thing every where is racist. Both of these are women of colour, at the time alot of things were sold by women white, black or other out of these types of boxes on sidewalks. Lots of examples, especially of white women in skimpy outfits selling cigarettes and matches, in fact it's the iconic image of the times more so than this one. Mysoginy and devaluing of women's labour, sexualising women as a marketing tool all enter the chat.

Aerial View Of Over 400,000 People At Woodstock , 1969

The Woodstock Music Festival began on August 15, 1969, as half a million people waited on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York, for the three-day music festival to start. Billed as “An Aquarian Experience: 3 Days of Peace and Music,” the epic event would later be known simply as Woodstock and become synonymous with the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Woodstock was a success, but the massive concert didn’t come off without a hitch: Last-minute venue changes, bad weather and the hordes of attendees caused major headaches. Still, despite—or because of—a lot of sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll and rain, Woodstock was a peaceful celebration and earned its hallowed place in pop culture history

What a great picture! I remember reading that there were tents only for people who were having a bad "trip". Others would guide the person into the tent and then another would stay with him or her until the episode was over or he or she needed more help. I thought that that was really cool for its time.

I sub for Carmine Appice with the legendary Vanilla Fudge (hit: "You Keep Me Hanging On" from 1967) and they were actually offered the Woodstock gig. They turned it down cause it didn't seem to be run very well and they decided to do other gigs. Ended up on the Ed Sullivan show a couple times so they were fine in the end but crazy they turned down the gig.

I knew a chap whose journey home to Australia took years. As a merchant seaman in Britain, he was low on the priority list, so he signed on to a ship going to Argentina, hoping his chances would be better there. He jumped ship in Buenos Aires, was arrested as an illegal entrant to the country, and put in jail. There was no Australian diplomatic presence, the British were busy with all their own people, so he was in jail, in limbo. After six months, the Argentinians solved the problem. They made him an Argentinian citizen, and told him to get lost.

When they began removing shoes and stockings, my great aunt never went swimming again. She was born with polydactyl hands and feet. Six fingers and toes each. Parents couldn't afford to have the extra toes cut off; only the fingers. She was very sweet, never married, and also suffered from St. Vitas Dance. Miss you, Aunt Carly.

They were usually wool too. Kept people warm once they got out. Fairly heavy but shed the water well unlike cotton. Men wore tops covering their tops until the 1930s in many places. The Victorians abhorred nudity and it took years to change these cultural views.

George Burns and Gracie Allen: In later years, Burns admitted that he had a very brief affair. Stricken by guilt, he phoned Jack Benny and told him about the indiscretion. However, Allen overheard the conversation and Burns quietly bought an expensive center piece. Nothing more was said. Years later, he discovered that Allen had subsequently told one of her friends about the episode, finishing with, "You know, I really wish George would cheat on me again. I could use a new centerpiece."

Interesting. There was a spike in divorces in 1946 when all the men came home from the war. Women were allowed to divorce after 1937, but adultery, cruelty, or desertion had to be demonstrated. Guess we know why she's got that expression. Good for her.

Clearly a Dutch vehicle but I don't know if this picture was taken in the Netherlands. The letters HX means this car came from the province South-Holland. Seeing those house up high this could be along the coast upon the dunes. Then again maybe its someone on a winter holiday abroad but that was a pretty luxury just after the war. Edit. Found it! You can see Retaurant Seinpost. This was in the coastal town of Scheveningen near The Hague. It was a real shame the city tore this 1886 building down in 1976. The neighboring kürhaus almost met the same fate but this was prevented due to public outcry who said enough is enough.

Much of the Netherlands is so flat that people will "ski" and "snowboard" on the bridges that cross canals. Saw this in a city. Perhaps a 2'-4' drop over maybe 30' if there's a couple inches of snow. Was watching as a mixed group of 20-40 year olds would take turns "skiing" for 5-10 seconds with breaks at the corner bar.

Lada was license of Fiat 124, even though originated from 1969, in 80's it's still wasn't that old technology. Every Eastern block manufacturer exported cars to West, mainly because of need of currency. These cars were dirt cheap, so they had their target buyers.

One of my fondest memories is of riding in a plastic milk crate bolted down to the back of a honda moped. Mom cut out a square in the back for my feet to stick out; I can still remember the rough feel of the cut plastic on the back of my legs. I was maybe 3 or 4.

Quite a headache those days for cops to read licence plates. Thankfully somewhere in the sixties they made people flip the plates so they were readable from a distance. In Swden they went even further by forcing people drive on the right (correct) side of the road instead of left as was custom back then. Fact.

Title is Dutch ("gemotoriseerd" is Dutch, Kinderwagen is the same in Dutch and German, with a capital K in German). Picture is in UK and appears in the opening credits of "Call the Midwive".

Strange. The numbers on the plate are backwards so the image is reversed. In that case the bike and 'sidecar' are right hand drive (yes this applies to bikes too) In that case it would be more likely to be in UK rather than, as the name would lead you to beieve, Germany. Looking across the street the writing is in English (reversed)

Anyone who now wants to see beach dress codes again are undoubtedly afraid of the human body. Somewhere along the line I fear that they've learned that some human parts are dirty and it's their job to negatively police everyone's beach body in which they come into eyesight. Of course you also realize that this also transfers to everyone's body and dress and life for everyday. It's always extremely, horrifically negative, of course. Because the viewer's idea of human acceptance is nil, he or she only accepts others exactly , profoundly like themselves. If it differs, it's evil and should be destroyed, eradicated. Wiped from memory. Thank you Conservatives for perpetuating this soul sucking, human crushing myth.

Just 4 weeks later she gave birth to healthy twins, a boy and a girl. They learned to walk and speak in mere 3 months and could read in the dark in a year. When the girl, Jenefer, sang people stopped in their tracks. There's a famous picture of mice and a cat at her feet listening. The boy, Jasper, could finish any crossword puzzle when 3 years old. By the age of 5 Jenefer had sold out concerts and Jasper was constantly featured in televised quiz shows and soap operas. But a few years later their parents suddenly disappeared while exploring the Amazonas rainforest and the twins completely withdraw from the limelight. Last time they were heard of they were listed as executive producers of the "2001: A space Odessey". Allegedly they still live in complete seclusion somewhere in Lower Manhattan managing a private equity firm and fashion house respectively.

I like to add, that at least for the Isetta (in Germany) you need/ed a standard driving licence. It is tiny (nowadays even more) but it was cheap. My parents had one. And there have been other cars like that, just google "Messerschmitt Kabinenroller" (aka the Schnewittchen Sarg /Schnewittchen's coffin).

A college aged married couple attended our church in the mid 1960s, who drove in their comfortable Isetta. They came early and always parked in front along with the beyond large, finned Caddys, Olds, and Chryslers of the deacons. We kids were amazed with the large entry door and it's steering wheel and at the time gave no thought to the passagers ability to survive a crash.

There were still operating lifts like this when I worked in downtown Chicago 20 years ago to take cars to upper or lower levels of a garage. They didn't store the cars in the lift itself. No idea if they're still in use, but it was a great way to conserve space, since there's no need to have wide looping driving paths up and down between floors. A car hop would use an inside elevator like this, take your car up or down to another floor and drive it out and park it. Next!

Well, at least two of them are cheating... I don't believe there is ever an honest game if people play for money. Once, when playing cards with a friend he asked me, "are you cheating?" and I said: "of course, aren't you?"

When I was a teenager in Spain I used to have to buy condoms for my mates because I was studying away in a bigger city, where I was anonymous. If we went to the pharmacy in our home town the chances are that the word would get out. i.e Johnny is dating Mary so, if Johnny is buying condoms, everyone would know that they are sleeping together. The amount of teen pregnancies was ridiculous.

People destroying things they never would be able to understand ... all that nice analog electronic, mechanic, levers and tracks and pushrods - a pinball machine is crammed with all of these, and it's a pretty cool device anyway. Also, as usually, you pay and play and never win any, it's not really adding up to consider it gambling.
