Time keeps marching on, and we're powerless to stop it. However, people have been doing a good job of capturing fleeting moments through photographs, allowing us to relive memorable events or experience ones we might have missed.
The Instagram account 'New Old Photos' is a great example of this. From auto mechanics in the 1920s to a Dutch open-air school in the 1950s, it shares interesting pictures that transport us to bygone eras and build a connection to the past.

Talking to Bored Panda about historical pictures, professor, writer, and amateur homesteader Joshua Wilkey said "I think photography can be an essential and powerful tool for understanding history, but I [also] think it is also necessary to view all photographs with a critical eye."
"While we might be accustomed to skepticism of photos in the age of Photoshop, photo editing isn't the only thing that should give us pause."

The historian provided a few very helpful questions we can ask ourselves when analyzing such images. The first one: is the photo lacking context? Or what is happening outside of the frame?
"There's always the chance that the viewer is seeing an intentionally skewed perspective," Wilkey highlighted. "A picture might be worth a thousand words, but sometimes it takes a thousand words to explain the context of a single photo.
As avid Bored Panda readers probably know, pictures can be very strange without context.

Load More Replies...Obviously staged - the hydrant dude! Checking confirms; a pro photo shoot (another pic has the same car as above "crashed" into a lamppost). I can't find the why, though. Novelty postcards? Some kind of morality campaign? Shorts were in the news that year: an anti-shorts ordinance in Yonkers, NY was overturned after protests and multiple arrests, and women marked through the town in shorts as a kind of victory parade. All gaining lots of media attention.
As I said in another comment, this was taken in Canada, not in the USA. So while the Yonkers thing happened, it happened in an entirely different country from where this picture was taken.

The picture taken was in Toronto, Canada... the article you posted was from Los Angeles, USA. So while technically the case, the law your article talks about wouldn't apply to women in Toronto. Two different countries, two different legal systems.
Load More Replies...Not back then. Women were required to wear long dresses/skirts either right at the kneecap and longer (aka it was the norm). Even the length of bathing suits for women were measured and had to be a maximum of x inches above the knee. Any shorter and they'd be arrested for public indecency. I'm glad times changed. Though some outfits are best suited inside the home (Kanye's wife, for one huge example).

In The 1800s , Pit Bulls Were Often Called "Nanny Dogs" Because Of The Protective Behavior They Exhibit Around Children
Pitbulls are great. Even though many people believe that the dogs are hellacious fighters, however in the 19th century these little pups were believed to be the perfect babysitters because of how clingy they get when they’re around children. Not only are the dogs protective over the children in their charge, but they’re very loyal and stable if they’re raised well.
“Nanny dogs” were placed with children once they were old enough to be comfortable around dogs, which had to be great for any victorian boy or girl, who doesn’t want a dog? The two dogs in this photo look like good boys, they deserve a treat.
Problem is idiot criminals have kept breeding them to be more aggressive to use in dogfighting or to have a "macho" dog. So nowadays there are some Pitbulls that are to unstable to even train properly
You should do some research before you continue to spread uninformed opinions online. Look into what happened to the dogs that were rescued from Michael Vick and get back to us. These dogs are able to be used for fighting specifically because their inherent loyalty is abused. Those "unstable" pitbulls you are taking about are just more examples of abused and poorly raised dogs that not only have to overcome the trauma of years of abuse to have a normal life, but stigma and bigotry from folks like you. Shame on you.
Load More Replies...The problem isn't them being aggressive it's just that if they DO bite they will cause a lot of damage. The most aggressive dog I can think of is the Chihuahua, but if they were to bite it would be relatively harmless..
I have many chihuahuas. Their bites hurt like a sonofabeech! And mine are not trying to hurt me but are angry because they don't like getting nail trims or baths! If they wanted to hurt you believe me they can!
Load More Replies...These dogs are wonderful. Dumb people (who shouldn't own any breed of dog), have messed up the breed's image.
Same description talks about how sweet their are AND how protective they are. If they protect your kid that's sweet. If they do so by maiming the neighbor kid who shoved your kid and sends him to the ER - not so sweet. I don't hate pitbulls. A relative had one and it was pretty sweet. But they are very strong for their size so when one DOES attack it is difficult to hold them back. TLDR: You can't bang on about how protective a breed is and pretend it never "protects"
I have one, and you hit the nail on the head. It can be a great dog, but you also have to be realistic about the dog you have. It’s not a golden retriever, so when it plays or protects a pitbull can do a ton of damage. My girls jaw and neck are incredibly strong, and I would not want to be on her protective end. She protects my wife and kids, and my wife won’t walk her anymore because she can’t control her when she decides there’s a threat.
Load More Replies...My daughter's beautiful pit is growing up with her son. I've never seen a more protective dog.
That's always how the story goes.. "Amazing pet", "He's my best friend", "I don't know what happened". "He's never done anything like this before."
Load More Replies...I really wish more people would realize this. It takes an evil person to make a bad dog through abuse and torture. But that same bad dog can be rehabilitated into a good dog by a good person.
Load More Replies...Calling pits of any breed nanny dogs only encourages bad owners. The ones that will say "my kids can do anything to our pit and he(she) is just fine." No dog can take everything kids dish out. Pits just have a response that can be much worse than most.
There is nothing worse about a pit bull attack, it is just like any other large dog attack. GSD and Rottweilers actually have stronger bite force than a Pit. Also, Pit Bulls absolutely CANNOT lock their jaws (another random pile of BS about Pits). Part of training a dog is also training the human. Notice how the OP said "'nanny dogs' were placed with children once they were old enough to be comfortable around dogs"
Load More Replies...My pit/lab mix Boone, will be 6 this year, adores children! He always gets so happy when we’re out walking and a child stops to pet him. When I babysit my friend’s son, he loves to sit and watch him. Boone is the sweetest, happiest boy who has never met a stranger. It’s a shame they still get such a bad reputation due to irresponsible breeders/owners.
We had a pitbull named Dreyfus. He was the most gentle dog. We were at the lake one summer and my niece (2/3yrs old) was wading in the very shallow water and my dog walked up and down that dock and wouldn't take his eyes off of her. She fell onto her bum (not deep water!) and he launched into the water to her immediately. It was amazing to watch, really. RIP Dreyfus.
The second question: is the photo representative? In other words, can the photo indicate something bigger than itself?
"For example, the internet has, for years, made fun of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un for marveling at seemingly cool but likely fake things like modern and well-stocked grocery stores," Wilkey added. "These photos are meant to be representative images portraying for Kim's people and for foreigners that North Korea is a modern and well-nourished society. [But] the reality is a bit different."

An Open Air School In 1957, Netherlands
The photograph was taken in 1957 in the Netherlands where open air schools were quite popular at the time. The idea of an al fresco classroom should be a very obvious one if the weather permits it, but unfortunately, most traditional western schools these days don’t put much emphasis on the benefits of learning outside of four walls.
IMO this should be mandatory for at least few times a week. I loved being outside in the woods and learning something at the same time. Art class by the lake was my favorite memory!
yeah, but pity the poor janitors when it starts to rain on those wooden desks...

Yeah, nice concept. No doubt. I had the pleasure to experience this in the late nineties (visiting the European equivalent of an high school). Some teachers out, out of the blue, suddenly got the brilliant idea to held there class in the school yard in late spring. It was all fun and games... well, if you wouldn't suffer from hay-fever. Those lessons were hell on earth for me and also one quater of my classmates! (Luckily, I'm one of those persons where hay-fever was only puberty related, so I have only suffered through 3-4 springs/summers).
Had a college outdoor ed class that met at a park first few weeks of the semester, weather was awesome.

While these concepts can apply to virtually any photograph, they become vital when we're viewing one as evidence.
"They are important for historical photographs because of the power and usefulness of photography in political propaganda."
North Korea is a great example of a regime that uses photography for propaganda, but Wilkey said that the Soviet Union and the US were well versed in the subject too, particularly during the Cold War and the Space Race.

A Young Man Demonstrating Against Low Pay For Teachers, Ca. 1930. “I Left School To Earn $21 A Week. My Teacher’s Pay Is $17.78 A Week.” Photographer Paul Thompson
Unfortunately, this is still true basically. At least in Arizona. When I first started teaching high school in 1968, my pay was $5499 annual. I had $10,000 in government loan debt to pay. My monthly salary was $300. From this I paid for my two bedroom unfurnished apartment and my utilities. Arizona was 47th out of the 50 states in teacher pay then. I am long since retired but teacher salary in Arizona is 49 out of 50 states now.
With penmanship like that, you should have been making more than $21.00. . .!
Still hasn't changed any. Yet sports team owners pay exorbitant sums into the millions, yet the average person can't afford to go to the games. And more than doctors, medical professionals, police, etc. get paid. Absolutely shameful.

Race comments aside, when I see photos like this I think, "poor people trying to scrape by". This says 40s Harlem but I've personally seen it in 80s Mexico and 80s and 2000s Philippines. Except instead of Beechnut it is usually little packets of Chicklets gum. Often a little kid or an old person but sometimes not. The common denominator for my experience was areas with a lot of poverty and people doing what they can to survive.
I think this was her job and not so much as means to scrape by. Also, Harlem was not as much a ghetto as people would like to claim. There is always this stereotype about all black neighbourhoods being ghettos. I have lived in two predominately black neighbourhoods, and they were not ghettos.

Aerial View Of Over 400,000 People At Woodstock , 1969
The Woodstock Music Festival began on August 15, 1969, as half a million people waited on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York, for the three-day music festival to start. Billed as “An Aquarian Experience: 3 Days of Peace and Music,” the epic event would later be known simply as Woodstock and become synonymous with the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Woodstock was a success, but the massive concert didn’t come off without a hitch: Last-minute venue changes, bad weather and the hordes of attendees caused major headaches. Still, despite—or because of—a lot of sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll and rain, Woodstock was a peaceful celebration and earned its hallowed place in pop culture history

Clearly a Dutch vehicle but I don't know if this picture was taken in the Netherlands. The letters HX means this car came from the province South-Holland. Seeing those house up high this could be along the coast upon the dunes. Then again maybe its someone on a winter holiday abroad but that was a pretty luxury just after the war. Edit. Found it! You can see Retaurant Seinpost. This was in the coastal town of Scheveningen near The Hague. It was a real shame the city tore this 1886 building down in 1976. The neighboring kürhaus almost met the same fate but this was prevented due to public outcry who said enough is enough.

Quite a headache those days for cops to read licence plates. Thankfully somewhere in the sixties they made people flip the plates so they were readable from a distance. In Swden they went even further by forcing people drive on the right (correct) side of the road instead of left as was custom back then. Fact.
How did we even grow up to this age? This was just a normal thing back in the day
Strange. The numbers on the plate are backwards so the image is reversed. In that case the bike and 'sidecar' are right hand drive (yes this applies to bikes too) In that case it would be more likely to be in UK rather than, as the name would lead you to beieve, Germany. Looking across the street the writing is in English (reversed)
Woman Arrested In The United States Due To The Fact That It Is The Wrong Swimsuit ( Too Short ) - The United States In The 1920s
Anyone who now wants to see beach dress codes again are undoubtedly afraid of the human body. Somewhere along the line I fear that they've learned that some human parts are dirty and it's their job to negatively police everyone's beach body in which they come into eyesight. Of course you also realize that this also transfers to everyone's body and dress and life for everyday. It's always extremely, horrifically negative, of course. Because the viewer's idea of human acceptance is nil, he or she only accepts others exactly , profoundly like themselves. If it differs, it's evil and should be destroyed, eradicated. Wiped from memory. Thank you Conservatives for perpetuating this soul sucking, human crushing myth.
So, you think women covering their bodies is an idea vested solely in US conservative voters? This is a genuine question.

Vertical Parking In Chicago , 1936 ( Car Elevator )
There were still operating lifts like this when I worked in downtown Chicago 20 years ago to take cars to upper or lower levels of a garage. They didn't store the cars in the lift itself. No idea if they're still in use, but it was a great way to conserve space, since there's no need to have wide looping driving paths up and down between floors. A car hop would use an inside elevator like this, take your car up or down to another floor and drive it out and park it. Next!
