Except daytime running lights only turn on the headlights, not the ones in the back... bad design team, no cookie

Some have them in the US, but it doesn't really matter. It's been a law in every state I've lived in. You must turn your lights on if it's raining, snowing, foggy, or dark. It should be common sense. If you're turning your wipers on, turn your lights on.

We have daytime running lights in the US, but people don't always turn them on.

AND, people think 'oh, lights are on' - so in their fog colored car in the fog they do not turn on any lights at all.. Smart cars - Stupid people.

That's increasingly common in America, but far, far from universal.

they do, but some people like to turn it off for some reason. the amount of times i dont see the DRL, or even at night without the rear lights on... too many times.

Well my 13 year old UK car has an option for "auto" lights, but half the time it doesn't think it needs them on, and the problem with automatic lights is some cars only turn sidelights on in rain, instead of your normal headlights, so even if you drive a brand spanking new car, its always worth checking your lights are on enough to be see

As I recall they don't have them in Germany. I recall being surprised by the "dark" cars since it's law to have lights on here all the time. It makes cars easier to see even in daylight.

The majority of cars in the US require you to manually turn on the lights and a large percentage don't even have running lights. The average age of a car on the road in the US now is 12.5 years so we have many vehicles that existed before the the auto-light technology did. We also have no laws requiring automatic running lights in new vehicles. Most states don't even require any running lights to be installed in new vehicles so even new cars sometimes don't have them. Most of the US requires you to own a car to be functional. When you can only afford a $2000 2001 Ford Taurus, automatic lights aren't even an option.

My 2006 has daytime running lights but my new car doesn't. Odd.

11 years isn't very old though, and even newer cars don't ALL have them. We have a 2016 that doesn't have auto lights.

I'd never own a car with daytime running lights for the same reason I'd never own a car where I couldn't turn off the interior light. When I'd go with my astronomy group to look at the night sky with telescopes, there were people who occasionally came in late because they couldn't get off work or something similar. If these guys came in with their lights on, it would have ruined everyone's night vision and disturbed anyone trying to do astrophotography. When I came in late once in a while, it was ridiculously easy to turn the lights off, keep the parking lights on, and let our eyes dark adapt for a moment before driving in. You could never do that with daytime running lights.

I've wondered how much of the no headlights in the rain is this. People think the headlights automatically come on and it's not dark enough to trigger the sensor. So they have no idea they're invisible.
