Science fiction has done a great job at making the concept of genetic mutation so frightening that even thinking of it happening in real life following a nuclear disaster might send chills down one's spine.
Well, genetic mutations do happen in real life without it being an apocalyptic Fallout scenario. The results might vary, but it can just be an aesthetic change making you look unique and cool.
Animals are no different in that regard. Folks all over the internet are sharing the one-of-a-kind genetic mutations their pets were born with, and Bored Panda has gathered them all into this neat little list, so enjoy!

Injury At Birth Left Rae With Only The Right Ear. As She Grew, It Migrated To The Top Of Her Head, Making Her A Unicorn
Yes, she can! I wondered the same thing, so I investigated. Apparently this pup's name is Rae ("ear" spelled backwards) and her mom was too rough trying to remove her placenta when she was born, so her mom accidentally injured her and one ear had to be removed. No one expected the ear to move to the top of her head! But the "ear migration" did not affect her hearing, nor does it discomfort her in any way, according to her owners. So, she is the goodest magical golden unicorn girl who can hear just fine!
Load More Replies...What a cutie! It looks like Rae is wearing her ear in a little bun.
YES! She CAN hear! And I read that the vet she was taken to is in my hometown of Grand Rapids, MI! https://fox59.com/news/unicorn-puppy-with-one-ear-on-top-of-her-head-is-a-social-media-star/

So, a genetic mutation is when DNA—that thing that determines who we are as organisms and how we go about being organisms—is replicated and something wrong happens. An error.
In simple terms, DNA is made up of parts that, when put together, determine one thing or another about our bodies. However, sometimes, the parts can get mixed up, additional parts might be added, or subtracted, this leading to mutations.
Frankenkitten The Four-Eared, One-Eyed Cat From Victoria, Australia
So cute though! 😍 I wonder if all 4 ears would work or if the extra ears are just external bits?
He can't hear out of the smaller pair of ears. They don't have canals or anything - I guess they're just decorative. :)
Load More Replies...So I had to find out more about this little guy. His eye was removed due to being deformed and infected. He got his name from the stitches after surgery. The extra 2 ears are "pinna" and have no internal parts, so he can't hear extra out of them. He has dental problems and will need surgery when he gets older. Poor little guy. So much pain, but living the life now!

The Suffolk Chocolate has a dog like character, and is devoted to its owner and family. It is extremely talkative, brave, and very happy to accompany its owner on their travels, even wearing a harness.
I grew up with 2 cats that same color. They were sable (fur color) Burmese.

There are a handful of types of genetic mutations in animals. Without getting super nerdy, the DNA code (or parts thereof) can get mixed up in multiple ways: it can get deleted or inserted, duplicated, inverted, frame-shifted, among other ways. These can affect individual cells or entire chromosomes depending on the circumstances, thus leading to varying degrees of mutation.

I Met A 14-Year-Old Dog With Vitiligo This Morning
That might be freaky if you woke up in the dark and found him staring at you! :) It would look like a pair of floating eyes.
So, how do animals get their mutations in the first place?
These can happen throughout the life of an animal or can be inherited from a parent. If a cell is affected by a mutation during life, it’s likely that derivative cells from it will also carry the mutation. In this case, it often only affects a small amount of cells, but inherited mutations, however, will affect all of the offspring cells.

Mutations are spontaneous. They happen during the process of replicating DNA. And since the body goes through quite a bit of these throughout the day, errors are bound to happen.
Now, the body does have mechanisms to deal with these errors. The biological mechanism that creates DNA also checks it for errors and if something is wrong, it attempts to fix it. I say attempts because it’s not always successful.

Load More Replies...If you’re wondering how the body does repairs, there are essentially 3 ways to go about it: [1] direct reversal, whereby enzymes directly undo the damage done by the DNA-creation chemical reaction; [2] excision repair, whereby the enzymes quite literally remove the wrong part to be replaced by the right one; and [3] double-stranded break repair, which is when a whole chromosome breaks into two, essentially, and the body fixed that.

Mom is a black Siamese (assuming mixed). Sometimes Siamese genes result in all black. If you check, she probably has a little kink at the top of her tail, too. Siamese kittens are born white and develop their color points as they grow.
Probably more likely that the kittens are taking after the dad, be he white or color point.

My Cat Olaf Has Heterochromia (One Green Eye, One Blue Eye) And When Photographed With A Flash On He Only Gets Red Eye In His Blue Eye
I had a cat like that once with one brown eye and one blue eye. Deaf as a rock. Dumb as a stump. I miss that little booger.
I always heard that all white cats with blue eyes are deaf. If they only have one blue eye, they’re deaf in the ear on the same side as the blue eye. Wonder if Olaf is deaf in his left ear?
Not all, but abt 40% for 1 blue eye, jumps to 65-80% if both eyes are blue.
Load More Replies...A friend of mine really wanted a white cat with blue eyes. (We were teenagers at the time) But when she found out about the odds of them being deaf she ended up with a white cat with a blue and a green eye. The cat had full hearing.

If the effect is neutral, this means that the mutation affected the DNA that has no function or the part that doesn’t affect amino acid sequences.
In serious cases, mutations can limit or completely destroy an animal’s ability to survive or reproduce. Marfan syndrome, for example, can affect cattle, specifically their heart and blood vessels, the skeleton and muscle tissue, and even cause ocular diseases.

Load More Replies...Breeding an animal like this deliberately is repugnant. Why do people feel the need to do this sort of thing?
The English Lop is one of the oldest recognized rabbit breeds. They're credited with being created in England in I think the 1800s, but they likely go back much farther than that, possibly from somewhere in Africa. Rabbits regulate their body temperature by pumping blood through their ears, so the large ears help them stay cool in hot climates. They sometimes trip over their ears while learning to get around as babies, but once more coordinated they aren't at any health disadvantage. They tend to be quite friendly and inquisitive and make good pets.

Chocolate Brown Tuxedo Kitten
This was posted by a Northern Colorado TNR organization, shared with them by a trapper in Denver where this cutie was apprehended. They said that brown is a rare genetic mutation of the gene for black fur, and that they trapped another brown cat in the area. He’s already spoken for, so wish him a happy life off the streets!
This isn't genetic related, but the same black cat can look slightly tawny brown at the end of summer and be dark black at the end of winter from an effect called rusting. Cats replace their coats twice a year and the summer coat on black cats living in sunny locations can get a bit sunbleached until their thick new black coat grows in. Human hair gets bleached from the sun too (for people with long brown hair, compare the color of your end to your roots), the only difference is that cats replace theirs much faster than we do.
I pet sat this kitten!! He was so sweet! My friend also trapped his (presumptive) dad, also a big sweet chocolate boy, and the people who adopted the dad also adopted this little bean with another sibling!

But there are also mutations that benefit the body. Insects can develop an immunity to pesticides that cover certain crops. Not really good for humans, but, hey, the animal found a way to survive, so it benefits it.
Another example is nylon-eating bacteria. Now, it might not necessarily benefit the bacteria itself, but it does solve the problem of degrading nylon-based waste.

My Friend's Cat Bianca Has Thumbs
Cats with opposable thumbs will take over the world pretty soon now. I'm looking forward to it.
For context at the time I was 16 and he was 17 and this was only a year ago, My ex boyfriend had two cats with thumbs, both girls, one of them got pregnant after going around the neighborhood and all he kittens had thumbs, one of them had two thumbs on each paw and then they(ex boyfriend and family) adopted a stray with thumbs who they didn’t know was pregnant and half of her litter had thumbs, so his family ended up with like 17 cats with thumbs 21 cats total and they all survived and were giving away the kittens once they were old enough, sadly my dad and brothers are allergic to cats so I couldn’t adopt any. We’re still friends and I love his cats and it’s really cute to see his little sisters (5 and 6) play with the kittens and now the kittens with thumbs were given away, there will most likely be more cats with thumbs coming. I thought you’d enjoy this, and yeah they’re probably going to take over the world.

Load More Replies...Roo Was Born With A Condition Called Radial Hypoplasia Which Means That His Front Forelegs Are Abnormally Short And Twisted
This is where it all began, well one of his new beginnings anyway. As a tiny kitten (prior to this pic) someone witnessed someone else throwing something into a lake in a plastic bag and heard meowing. The person saved Roo and brought him to animal control where Florida Humane Society took him to treat him and find him a home.
Apparently, someone didn't think he deserved to live because he was different. He doesn't use his right front leg to put weight on so he is more or less a tripod cat when he walks and he stands in the position you see here. We think there is less bone in that right leg than the left leg since it never touches the ground. He was otherwise healthy and required no special treatment as cats born with this adapt very well to getting around having known life no other way. He was adopted out not long after this photo was taken.
Yes, but on the flip side, someone noticed and took action to save Roo.

I got a cat with that condition when I was 5 and actually wanted to name it Polly after my Polly Pocket toy, my parents said no but then found out about the condition and chose the name.
Just as an aside, I've recently fostered 2 litters of kittens, one weaned at 9 weeks and one weaned at 13 weeks, and both groups liked to stuck on random things (generally fuzzy blankets, but one actually sucked her own nipple). It's a comfort thing, not necessarily a sign of early weaning.

Dwarfism In Chickens? + Crazy Polydactyly
This is my sweet lady, Matilda. She is a naked neck, frizzle, silkie mutt, who I believe is inbred and also has dwarfism. I adopted her from Craigslist. She got terribly attacked by another hen of mine, so I’ve been keeping her inside until her feathers grow back. During this time I noticed a plethora of ridiculous things with her: her skin and toes were so pale, she had barely any energy, and she’s got poly-polydactyly (there are toes on her extra toes!). No matter what, she is always freezing or overheating, her feathers are always falling out and super dry or growing incorrectly. Despite being a similar age to my other silkies, Matilda is so tiny (3rd pic is her next to a 6-month-old silkie rooster).

I thought I knew everything about my boy but only noticed tonight that he has an extra toe on one of his back feet! He is in the middle of finishing a shed on his legs so that’s why the coloration is off but I was so excited when I saw this! He is 2 years old.
HOW DO YOU HAVE A DRAGON [Edit: forgot about Komodo dragons.]
LOL, a Komodo dragon is not a pet. It would kill and eat you. This is a bearded dragon.

Dwarfism In Chickens
I never knew dwarfism was a thing in chickens. All three of these hens are from the same hatching.
I don't know about dwarfism in chickens, but I used to have bantam chickens. They are tiny chickens with feathers on their feet. Mine had strong maternal instincts but sadly werent to bright. Theyd keep managing to accidently shove the chicks out of the nest in the night! Frozen chicks not good.
My Dog Salem Has Persistent Pupillary Membrane
That's what happens when you follow too closely behind a dump track hauling gravel.
Albino Ball Python
That looks like a colouring spcifically bred for among snake pet breeders. Not unusual these days.

Tailless Kitty
It's a birth defect I think, her front legs are shorter than the back, runs like a rabbit hopping.
Is she manx? Our part manx kittens had weird birth defects. Clubbed tail, could see ones brain through their ear ect.

My Friend's Illegally Small Cat Has Dwarfism (Small Suitcase And Hand For Scale)
She's a sick little lady due to her health conditions, but she's still living her best life! She's 5 lbs, smaller than your average toaster and pictures will never do her smollness justice.
My Autistic Cat With Some Extra Features
Its not. People keep trying to make it a think but it's not
Load More Replies...I Googled autism in cats and it said that whilst there's no scientific evidence to support a diagnosis that cats are known to display symptoms like repetitive pacing or spinning, excessive vocalisation and difficulty adapting to change..
My cat, Winter, had a similar thing. We rescued her from a grass farmer next door in the midst of winter. She had somehow got past their fence and came over to our side. She was vastly underweight and was very skittish. For the rest of her life she was afraid of most men, the outside. She would sit on my stairway and cry for hours without end. She had days where she was super sweet and others where even the slightest freak of wood would make her go running. She was the sweetest thing even but sadly she died recently. I miss her a lot.

A Puppy With One Eye, 2 Tongues, And No Nose
This makes me sad because this isn't going to be a pet that is going to live a wonderful life despite the odds. We're looking at an animal that can't survive.
You’re right, the vast majority of animals born with this condition don’t survive more than a few hours or days :( although there is one goat on TikTok with cyclopia who is actually living a long happy life, so we can only hope for the same luck for this lil pup!
Load More Replies...This doesn’t really fit with the others, all the other pets are living their best life despite their disabilities but sadly this poor little guy passed away shortly after being born :(
Poor baby! Makes me want to cry at the improbability of any quality of life.

I have mixed feelings about posts like this. I want to upvote every animal and say how beautiful they are in their own unique way, but I just know that there are bad people out there who will look at internet popularity as a reason to purposely breed animals with mutations. Some of the mutations aren't harmful, but some really are (like dwarfism).
That was my thought. All these animals are adorable, but that's how we ended up with dogs like corgis and pugs. With myriad health problems all because humans had to have something cute!
Load More Replies...I find it ironic that we treasure the superficial differences in animals but in humans looking different can make you an outcast.
We are getting better. Comedians with cerebral palsy, models with vitiligo, slow progress, but better than the old days with freak shows.
Load More Replies...All that matters is that they're healthy, happy, and not suffering.
